From Rathlin in the north to Cape Clear in the south, the islands off the coast of Ireland have long been a source of inspiration and of myth. But they're home to a rich diversity of wildlife too - and a wide range of people. In Inis na nIontas, actor and comedian Ardal O'Hanlon takes us on a fascinating journey, unearthing the history, observing the wildlife and meeting the islanders trying to live sustainably within their extraordinary environment. Inis na nIontas is Ardal O'Hanlon's first Irish-language show. His mother, Teresa, is a native Irish-speaker and, in this series, Ardal fulfils a longstanding ambition to practise and improve his Irish and promote its use to a wider public. Ardal O'Hanlon's first Irish-language show The first episode will be broadcast on TG4 on 10th January at 9.30pm. It focusses on the north, beginning on Rathlin Island, famous for its countless seabirds and, unique to the island, the golden hare. Here, Ardal learns how an astonishing archaeological find has rewritten Irish history, and he tastes some noodles made from kelp, sustainably farmed on the island. From Rathlin, Ardal travels to remote Tory Island off Donegal, where he learns of its musical tradition and its mystical past, and we see how farming practices are being fashioned to encourage the endangered corncrake. Next, Ardal heads to Arranmore, the largest island of the north. Here, he learns how the islanders are encouraging new residents, while on a beautiful, small islet the threatened little tern has found a welcome sanctuary. In the second episode, Ardal continues down the west coast to the Aran islands, where he learns from a practising monk of their ancient Christian heritage while, all around, a remarkable range of flora blooms, encouraged by traditional farming methods. Heading south, Ardal visits the abandoned Great Blasket Island, former home to Irish author Peig Sayers, now home to a thriving seal colony and two young caretakers. On nearby Valentia, Ardal is shown fossilised evidence of early life emerging from the sea. Along the island's coast, Ireland's only vermouth producers forage for ingredients, while in the surrounding waters oyster conservationists are hard at work. The episode ends with a visit to spectacular Skellig Michael, a UNESCO world heritage site made internationally famous in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With Luke Skywalker long gone, the island is home to numerous puffins and the world's most dramatic ancient monastery. In the final episode, Ardal is in the far south, where he discovers beautiful Garnish Island. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Garnish is a paradise filled with gorgeous, lush gardens. It's also a breeding ground for the rare and majestic white-tailed eagle. By kayak, Ardal sees its thriving seal colony, before heading further south to Sherkin Island, where he's at sea once more, being introduced to a playful pod of dolphins. A local historian tells us of the island's piratical past and a resident artist explains why Sherkin has become a painters' paradise. Ardal visits Cape Clear A short hop takes Ardal to Cape Clear, Ireland's southernmost island, where he's taken on a tour in one of the island's electric buses - the only in Ireland. We meet the island's resident ornithologist, who explains the huge importance of the island for migratory birds, and visit a gin distillery that uses foraged kelp. A climactic clifftop view, out across the Atlantic, marks the end to an unforgettable journey. From mighty, windswept cliffs to sub-tropical Edens, the islands of Ireland are extraordinary in their diversity and, for Ardal, the filming has been a revelatory experience. ARDAL O'HANLON - 'It was remarkable for me to witness the extraordinary diversity of our islands and to meet such a range of astonishing people. As an Irishman, I'd obviously heard of a lot of these places, but I was quite taken aback by visiting and seeing for myself. I was genuinely moved. We have some of the most breathtaking scene...

Today we welcome Indiana Stones himself, the one and only David Keohan. Hailing from Ireland, David is a Stone lifter, a kettlebell world champion, an artist and a musician. He's been on a mission to recover Ireland's lost stone lifting culture and has done so through our literature and folklore. We spoke all about his stone lifting journey from his lifting of the fianna stone in Scotland which inspired his own search in Ireland. Culminating in the rediscovery of the stone described by the famous Galway writer Liam O'Flaherty in his short story ‘The Stone'. He has rediscovered 30 testing stones, a remarkable act of reclamation and celebration of this lost tradition. Through this act David has created a remarkable and unique magical act of healing of the multi-generational trauma of Ireland's colonisation. These great testing stones, now rediscovered form a chain back into our ancient past, before colonisation, before christianity and in lifting these stones once more the chain is renewed, in a feat of strength and deep ancestral healing. His work is a brilliant and inspiring intersection of folklore, magic, mythology, and strength. In the Plus show we get into ancestral work, and animism. We talk about Peig Sayers and Ghosts leading us to tell their stories. The death stone of Cú Chulainn, the Irish Hercules and to close out the show I read Liam O'Flaherty's short story ‘The Stone'. Welcome to this week's episode of Low Season Traveller Insider Guides brought to you in partnership with our good friends at Tourism Ireland Today we head back over to Dublin one last time, where I spent a wonderful 3 days in the low season of January earlier this year.  With clear blue skies, low crowds and plenty of things to experience and do, Dublin rarely disappoints in the winter months.  And what better way to pass the time than meeting up with some wonderful people like today's guest, Simon O'Connor who is the Director of the Museum of Literature Ireland or MoLI as it's better known. MoLI is a museum of literature for the world's greatest storytellers.  A tranquil oasis on St Stephen's Green in the heart of Dublin, MoLI is where visitors from all over the world come to discover Ireland's rich literary heritage from past to present via it's immersive exhibitions and rare treasures from the National Library of Ireland. And it is an utterly inspiring place which I had the pleasure of passing a few hours in before meeting up with Simon in his curator's office when we met up to find out more about Ireland's literary past. And if you're interested in learning more about the Museum or indeed would like to plan a visit during your next trip to Dublin, you can learn more by visiting moli.ie. For listeners of a certain age, the name of Peig Sayers could be enough to trigger Leaving Cert sweats - and even though she's been gone from the syllabus for over 25 years, her name is still synonymous with the whole Leaving Cert process. But is it time to rethink Peig Sayers? A new exhibition at the Museum of Literature Ireland, MOLI, seeks to reintroduce her to us, placing this writer in her proper international context, and finds the warmth and humour within one of the all-time great memoirs. This episode of Blúiríní Béaloidis was recorded in the beautiful surrounds of the Museum of Literature Ireland, in the historic UCD Newman House on St Stephen's Green in the heart of Dublin - and, I might add - for the first time, in front of a live studio audience. This was a great pleasure for me personally, so thanks to Ian, Benedict, Katie and Simon at MoLI for their kindness and hospitality in having us along. This aim of this podcast is to present listeners with the richness, artistry and depth of vision to be found in our folk traditions, and to this end, each episode to date has taken a singular fragment of that tradition as its primary focus; holy wells, sacred trees, rites of passage, calendar observances, the house, and so on. This format, while useful for our purposes, is necessarily somewhat artificial as an approach, for in our own lives, tradition rarely compartmentalises itself so neatly, instead manifesting as a tapestry of many threads, and a chorus of many voices which serve to keep to the past present. For this episode however, instead of focusing on one aspect of tradition, we for the first time dedicate our explorations to one individual; Mairéad ‘Peig' Sayers who, by her artistry and mastery as a storyteller in the oral tradition, skilfully managed to express the ‘wisdom of the many in the wit of the few', and yet whose printed autobiographies, as Irene Lucchitti notes in an article in Folklore and Modern Irish writing: ‘experienced a decline in reputation, suffering critical disdain and schoolyard ridicule in equal measure'. Now, nearly sixty-five years after her death, we hope to provide a platform through which her tales might find a new audience, one which, it is hoped, may find in her a source of inspiration and insight. It is a pleasure then, to announce that quite apart from this podcast, our friends and colleagues at MoLI, having worked in collaboration with ourselves at the NFC, will host a nine month exhibition on Peig Sayers called 'Thar Bealach Isteach' / 'Into the Island', on the Blasket Island storytelling tradition, and the context in which priceless fieldwork collections of oral literature held today in the archives of the National Folklore Collection at UCD, were recorded from that community by the Irish Folklore Commission. With me to explore Peig's stories for this episode, I am hugely honoured to have been joined by Dr. Pádraig Ó Héalaí and Dr. Éilís Ní Dhuibhne. Pádraig is a retired Senior Lecturer in Modern Irish at NUI, Galway. His area of specialisation is Irish folklore and he has published on many aspects of this topic, including religious tradition, Blasket heritage and beliefs and practices associated with the supernatural. He is a former editor of the journal Béaloideas and with Bo Almqvist, he edited with Peig Sayers: Labharfad le Cách / I Will Speak To You All and Níl Deireadh Ráite (both of which were recently republished by New Island). Recently, he edited An Blascaod Trí Fhuinneog na Scoile (2015), a young teacher's account of her experience of life on the Great Blasket when it was still home to a vibrant community. Éilís Ní Dhuibhne was born in Dublin. Author of more than thirty books, her works include The Dancers Dancing, The Shelter of Neighbours, Cailíní Beaga Ghleann na mBláth and Hurlamaboc, among others. Her most recent books are Twelve Thousand Days: A Memoir, Little Red and Other Stories (Blackstaff 2020), and Look! It's a Woman Writer; Irish Literary Feminisms 1970-2020 (ed.) (Arlen House, 2021) As well as being a writer, she is a folklore scholar and has written extensively on aspects of traditional narrative. She has been the recipient of many literary awards, most recently the Pen Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Irish Literature. In Autumn 2020 she held the Burns Scholarship at Boston College. She is a member of Aosdána, and President of the Folklore of Ireland Society.

Peig Sayers (1873 - 1958) is one of the most remarkable figures in twentieth century Ireland. Her journey to publication is a story of beating the odds. An outsider from the Dublin literary scene by geography, language, gender, education and even literacy (she could write in English but not Irish), she gives a glimpse at the multitude of stories that never got told in a rapidly changing Ireland. It is a story of hardship and personal tragedy, but tells of an extraordinary community and their stories in elegant, blossoming prose. This isn’t how Peig is typically thought of or referred to in Ireland, however, and for the past thirty or more years she has become a mascot of sorts for critics of the Irish education system, and of policies to protect, support and advance the Irish language or Gaeltacht areas. Why is this so?  In today’s episode, Darach, Peadar and Gearóidín look at Peig’s life and legacy. They listen to a contemporary account of her book being removed as a compulsory text for the Leaving Cert from 1995 onwards - a quarter of a century ago - and wonder why this scar hasn’t healed for certain commentators. They consider the process of the book’s dictation and how this may have influenced the final product. And they ask if criticism of this woman and her book (which passes the Bechdel test) can sometimes have an undercurrent of toxic masculinity. We also hear from Irish women who are touched by Peig’s life and work and who feel it is as relevant as ever.  --- Support Motherfocloir on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/darach  Get Kirsten Shiel art prints here: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/kirstenshiel/  --- Contact the show: whatsapp - +353894784713 (https://wa.me/353894784713) twitter - @motherfocloir and @theirishfor email - motherfocloir@headstuff.org (mailto:motherfocloir@headstuff.org) --- Want to record your own podcast? We're really sorry, but sure look, it was bound to happen at some stage. Darach is still on leave and the gang has finally gone off the rails. They start out innocent enough, sure. Peadar and Gearóidín and Eimear and Osgur talk about the perils of machine translation, bad tattoos and lazy Government departments. We don't know exactly when it goes bananas, but they read a porno. An honest-to-goodness porno as Gaeilge. Live on stage in Maynooth! This is not the Ireland of Peig Sayers and Brian Ború. Needless to say, because of the graphic content of this podcast, it should not be listened to by anyone. We're so sorry. "Peig passes the Bechdel Test". Sparklingly witty, unfailingly honest, sometimes misunderstood and with a grá for the Gaeilge, Tara Flynn and Peig Sayers are two women who have been unfairly criticised a lot in recent years. Although Peig is sadly unavailable, Tara was kind enough to visit Darach this week for a chat. Tara tells Darach about her iconic work on the Morbegs (and the attention to detail put into the Irish language content), reevaluating Peig as an adult and the simple joys of the offline life. Tara's book "Rage In" published by Headstuff is available in bookshops now and her new podcast "Taranoia" is out now, go find it. * * * Contact the show at https://twitter.com/motherfocloir or email us at motherfocloir@headstuff.org.
