A Minister of State believes the death of a white-tailed eagle in Clare was the result of illegal activity. An investigation is underway following the death of Caimin, one of Ireland's oldest breeding white-tailed eagles, whose body was found in Mountshannon on Saturday May 24th. Caimin held territory at the Mountshannon nest site on Lough Derg for 17 years and was brought to Ireland from Norway as part of a programme aimed a re-establishing a population of the previously extinct species here. The misuse or illegal use of poisons accounts for nearly 50% of eagle deaths and Fianna Fáil Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O'Sullivan, says it's likely this is how Caimin died.
On this weeks podcast, John and Shane meet up with Marcus from the Lough Derg pastoral team to discuss with him the on-going work taking place at one of Ireland's holiest pilgrimage spots - St Patrick's Purgatory on Lough Derg in Co Donegal. We have our regular run through the up coming liturgical odds and ends including saints of the week. We check in with Rome to see what Papa Leo has been up to and of course today was the Mass for the Inauguration of his Petrine Ministry in Rome where he was invested with the pallium and the ring of the fisherman. In part three we have a brief reflection on the Sunday gospel which this weeks is taken from the Great Discourse in the Gospel of St John with the presentation of the Great Commandment to Love.Invitation to Lough DergFaithful to a tradition inspired by Patrick, who himself found hope and new purpose in his time among the mountains, Lough Derg is here to offer opportunities for deep encounter with self and with God in these changing timesSt Patrick's Purgatory is an ancient pilgrimage site on Station Island in Lough Derg, County Donegal, Ireland. According to legend, the site dates from the fifth century, when Christ showed Saint Patrick a cave, sometimes referred to as a pit or a well, on Station Island that was an entrance to Purgatory. It is historical importance as a place of pilgrimage comes down to us to the present day. In Triratna, learning to understand what is truly beautiful is seen as a path to Enlightenment itself. In this episode we find ourselves exploring this in an unexpected and extraordinary way at the seat of all Buddhist paths and myths, Bodh Gaya in India. Not far from the bodhi tree, where the Buddha's great achievement is said to have taken place, you'll find us deep in conversation with visitiing leaders from the Dublin Buddhist Centre about their vision of building a Buddhist retreat centre in Eire: a realm of beauty and a fitting home for distinctively Irish Dharma practice in the heart of County Clare. We hear about the retreat centre's name Shubha Vihara—The Place of Beauty—and how it sits alongside the legendary mythic names, spaces and stories of Ireland, before and after St. Patrick. We meet Brigid, Cuchulain (Setanta), and Fionn mac Cumhail as he catches the Salmon of Knowledge; and visit in our imagination Lough Derg, the ancient passage tomb of Newgrange, and the Hill of Tara—crowning place for the High Kings of Ireland. All while exploring aspects of Christianity's impact on the country's pagan spiritual history, and the role of positive warrior culture as it manifests and is transformed in both Buddhist and Irish contexts. It's hard work building magic spaces and the team give us a glimpse into what's involved on the ground trying to transmute spreadsheets and fundraising calls into the magic of genuine community, alive with deep possibilities, where practice is—somehow—palpably rooted in the native earth and energies of a specific land and a society ready for change. Join us for an inspiring episode for the ages about a distinctively Buddhist contirbution to Irish culture. As a bonus, we close this conversation with a recitation of the traditional Buddhist ethical precepts rendered into Gaelic. Beautiful indeed! I 2004 tháinig an droch nuacht amach go raibh níos mó daoine óga sa chontae ag déanamh dochar dóibh féin. Sin McFly le Five Colours In Her Hair – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2004. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1977 chuaigh ABBA chuig barr na cairteacha le Dancing Queen I Meiriceá. Bhí sé a seachtú singil a bhí sna cairteacha I Meiriceá agus sa Bhreatain. Ceithre mhí tar éis é sin chuaigh a amhrán 7 Days chuig barr na cairteacha. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh amhránaí Lil Nas X I Meiriceá I 1999 agus rugadh aisteoir Kristen Stewart I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1990 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sí. That was McFly with Five Colours In Her Hair – the biggest song on this day in 2004. Onto music news on this day In 1977, ABBA topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with “Dancing Queen.” The song, which marked the Swedish quartet's seventh Top 40 single in the US, hit No.1 in the UK and a dozen other countries. In 2000, with “Fill Me In,” British R&B star Craig David – who was a month shy of his 19th birthday – became the youngest UK male solo artist to write and perform a No.1 hit on the UK singles chart. Four months later, he scored another chart-topper with “7 Days.” And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – singer Lil Nas X was born in 1999 and actress Kristen Stewart was born in California in 1990 – and this is some of the stuff she has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

TolkienAt last out of the deep seas he passed, and mist rolled on the shore;under clouded moon the waves were loud,as the laden ship him boreto Ireland, back to wood and mire,to the tower tall and grey, where the knell of Cluian-ferta's belltolled in the green Galway.Where Shannon down to Lough Derg ranunder a rainclad skySaint Brendan came to his journey's endto await his hour to die.‘O! tell me, father, for I loved you well,if still you have words for me,of things strange in the rememberingin the long and lonely sea,of islands by deep spells beguiledwhere dwell the Elven-kind:in seven long years the road to Heavenor the Living Land did you find?'‘The things I have seen, the many things, have long now faded far;only three come clear now back to me:a Cloud, a Tree, a Star.We sailed for a year and a day and hailedno field nor coast of mean;no boat nor bird saw we ever afloatfor forty days and ten.We saw no sun at set or dawn, but a dun cloud lay ahead, and a drumming there was like thunder comingand a gleam of fiery red.Upreared from sea to cloud then sheera shoreless mountain stood;its sides were black from the sullen tideto the red lining of its hood.No cloak of cloud, no lowering smoke,no looming storm of thunderin the world of men saw I ever unfurledlike the pall that we passed under. We turned away, and we left asternthe rumbling and the gloom;then the smoking cloud asunder broke, and we saw the Tower of Doom:in its ashen head was a crown of red, where the fishes flamed and fell.Tall as a column in High Heaven's hall, its feet were deep as Hell;grounded in chasms the water drownedand buried long ago,it stands, I ween, in forgotten landswhere the kings of kings lie low.We sailed then on, till the wind had failed, and we toiled then with the oar,and hunger an thirst us sorely wrung, and we sang our psalms no more.A land at last with a silver strandat the end of strenght we found;the waves were singing in pillared cavesand pearls lay on the ground;and steep the shores went upward leapingto slopes of green and gold, and a stream out of rich and teemingthrough a coomb of shadow rolled.Thank you for journeying w/ the Saints with us!
It's hoped a new state of-the-art water sports facility coming to East Clare will be the crown jewel in the region's active tourism offering. Clare County Council has signed the contract with PS Carmody Contractors LTD to commence construction of the €1.2m amenity at Ballycuggaran on the shores of Lough Derg. The new development is expected to be open to the public next August and will offer hot showers, toilet facilities, changing areas, and equipment wash down rooms for scores of visitors and water enthusiasts to come. Mayor of Clare Councillor Alan O'Callaghan says it's a crucial step forward for the county.
One project being mentioned for the Apple tax windfall is the Shannon pipeline project to pump water from our longest river to Dublin and the eastern counties. Uisce Éireann has already spent nearly 70 million euro on preparing its planning application. However the plan has once again aroused concerns in the Tipperary and Lough Derg areas.

Large crowds descended on East Clare today to pay their respects to the late literary great, Edna O'Brien. The Tuamgraney native was remembered as a worsdmith, extraordinary women and fabulous mother at her funeral mass this afternoon. The voice of Edna O'Brien speaking in 2015 where outlined her fearless approach to her 1963 debut novel "Country Girls" which would epitomise her legendary career to come. The book was initially censored in Ireland and denounced by the Church for highlighting taboo social issues. Throughout the course of her over 60-year vocation, O'Brien penned over 30 texts and was described during her funeral mass as someone who gave courage and spoke for those who were rendered dumb. Chief Celebrant Fr Donagh O'Brien said she was a wordsmith and a truth teller who paid the price for her bravery. St.Joseph's Church in Tuamgraney was packed to capcity for the service, with many more paying their respects watching from screens outside. Those in attendance included President Michael D.Higgins and First Lady Sabina, while Commandant Colonel Claire Mortimer represented the office of Taoiseach and Tánaiste. Irish Actor Stephen Rea was among those who delivered a reading during the ceremony, A number of gifts were also brought to the altar to celebrate Edna's life, they included copy of Ulyesses by James Joyce, a portrait of Samuel Beckett and flowers from her childhood home at Drewsboro House, which she was said to have described as "her home of homes". The French Legion of Honour was also brought up to recognise a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, as well as the budda to recognise her spiritual exploration. The eulogy was read out by Novelist Andew O'Hagan who paid tribute to Edna for wonderfully sharing her world with others. In Accordance with her wishes, Edna O'Brien was laid to rest at the ancient monastic settlement of Holy Island on Lough Derg. Speaking during the mass, her son Marcos Gelber said that although she will rightly be remembered for her literary works, she was a fabulous mother who showered her family with love.

The Mayor of Clare says a "shadow has been cast" over Killaloe, following the death of a young man in Lough Derg. A young man, named locally as Wassiou Ayawe, a young footballer from Limerick city, died after a jet ski he was travelling on with two girls, overturned at "Between the Waters", south of Killaloe Bridge last evening. The two girls, believed to be from the area, managed to make it to shore safely with the help of bystanders, and an extensive multi-agency search and rescue operation got underway to locate the young man. The body of a man was discovered at around half seven and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. An Garda Síochána and the Marine Casualty Investigation Board are carrying out separate investigations to determine the cause of the incident and Gardaí say they are currently treating it as a tragic accident. Lough Derg RNLI - Interview with Jonathan Horgan by Tipp FM Radio
Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. This month, we're getting back to the Mythic Places of Ireland, and the stories they're connected to, with a new series on waterways. This is the story that links into this time of year, a story we've told a few times before in a few different ways, and which has the origin of the Shannon and an alternative to the naming of Lough Derg in it too. So it certainly ties into our waterways collection this year. Caorthannach is known as the mother of the devil himself, and the mother of all of the demons and spirits of Ireland. This is also the story of St. Patrick lighting the fires on Crough Patrick to ward off all the snakes and demons of Ireland and in one quick and remarkable way convince the entire island to put their faith in him and the new religion. But we focus a little more on the demon side in this telling as Aron gets into character… Head over to YouTube to see the video of this telling done in studio with thanks to Dublin City Council. Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. This month we're telling stories of the Mythic Places of Ireland and its many waterways. This one of a number of stories about how Lough Derg, on the Shannon, got its name. They all seem to come back to blood, one way or another. The poet Aithirne demanded high prices for all his performances, and liked to try to stir up trouble by asking for something he knew would be refused.
