Send us a textWas 1950s Dublin really a place of murder and intrigue? On today's show we travel to the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation  in Dublin's Fenian Street to talk to novelist John Banville about his latest novel, The Drowned, the fourth in a series featuring Detective Inspector St John Strafford and the pathologist Quirke familiar to many from the Benjamin Black novels. And we talk to Estonian poet Doris Kareva who visited the Centre recently about her own poetry, translation, and Estonia. Brew up a big pot of coffee and join us for a lively show! This episode is supported by a Project Award from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.Intro/outro music: Colm Mac Con Iomaire, ‘Thou Shalt Not Carry' from The Hare's Corner, 2008, with thanks to Colm for permission to use it. Logo designed by Freya Sirr.Reviews of The Drowned'Cold, compelling and seamlessly plotted, The Drowned also offers a fine portrait of that familiar and never likeable figure in Banville's fictions: the supercilious villain who has lost his moral compass.' ― Financial Times'A beautifully written and intriguing slowburn of a book, in which the various quandaries in the main characters' private lives are as absorbing as the central mystery'. ― Guardian'Brilliant . . . You need not have read the earlier novels to follow this one, but it will be a better read if you do . . . while various loose ends are left tantalisingly in the air, making it clear that a sequel will follow. It can't come too soon for this devoted fan. '― Irish Examiner'Richly atmospheric . . . It's a Dublin where you can smell the pubs, feel the drizzle, and taste the Bewley's coffee. [...]At the centre of it all is the strained relationship between Quirke and Strafford, a couple at odds who are right up there with Banville's greatest achievements.' ― Irish Independent'Tight-lipped humour thrums through the latest in the Booker winner's Strafford and Quirke crime series . . . The Drowned stands alone, too, suspenseful on its own terms . . . while it's ultimately evil, not good, that gives The Drowned its crackling denouement, the novel takes care to part on a more cheerful note - even if the logic of the series demands that Quirke can hardly be content for too long.' ― ObserverThe Drowned delivers an ultimately satisfying and immersive mystery in beautifully wrought prose. ― Irish Independent Books in BriefBravo! ― The TimesDoris Kareva is one of Estonia's leading poets. In part two of a two-part series, the Balchem technical team selected industry research of interest from the 2024 American Dairy Science Association meetings to feature on this episode of the Real Science Exchange. Smart Cows, Smart Farms: Unleashing the Potential of Artificial Intelligence in the Dairy Sector Guest: Dr. Jeffrey Bewley, Holstein Association USA (1:58)Dr. Bewley is the Dairy Analytics and Innovation Scientist at Holstein Association USA, where part of his role is collaborating with Western Kentucky University at the WKU Smart Holstein Lab. The group works with more than 30 technologies, including wearable, camera and machine vision, milk analysis, and automation technologies. At ADSA, Dr. Bewley's presentation was part of a symposium titled “Applications of AI to Dairy Systems.” His talk focused on cow- and farm-level technologies using artificial intelligence. He anticipates a continued massive increase in the availability of technologies for dairy farms to assist with automating processes that are often monotonous tasks. One example of this is the wearable accelerometer technologies that allow for the assessment of estrous behavior, as well as rumination and eating behavior. In the future, camera-based technologies may become more commonplace for things like body condition scoring. Cameras may also be able to monitor rumination and eating behavior, and even perhaps dry matter intake. Dr. Bewley also sees an opportunity on the milk analysis side to be able to measure even more biomarkers to better manage for improved health, reproduction, and well-being. He reminds listeners that animal husbandry will continue to be a critical piece of dairy farming even with advancing technology. He gives examples of current and cutting-edge technologies on the horizon for dairy farms. On his wish list of technologies for the future, he includes dry matter intake measurement and inline measurement of somatic cell count, hormones, and metabolites in the milk. In closing, Dr. Bewley encourages listeners to be excited yet cautious about artificial intelligence and gives examples of how technology can collect phenotypic data to use in genetic evaluation. Explaining the Five Domains and Using Behavioral Measures in Commercial Systems Guest: Dr. Temple Grandin, Colorado State University (26:48)Dr. Grandin's presentation was also part of a symposium, titled “The Animal Behavior and Wealthbeing Symposia: Evaluating Animal Comfort and Wellbeing Using the Five Domains.” The five domains approach is gaining popularity. Previous guidance documents emphasized preventing suffering, cruelty, and discomfort. The five domains are nutrition, environment, health, behavior interactions, and the emotional state of the animal. Much of the information available is very theoretical. Dr. Grandin's goal for this presentation was to gather easy-to-download scoring tools to assist in auditing the five domains in the field. She emphasizes the importance of good stockmanship for animal well-being and cautions that while artificial intelligence technologies can be used to assess the five domains, good stockmanship will always be necessary. Dr. Grandin recommends a three-legged audit: internal, independent third-party, and corporate representatives. She cautions against farming all audits out to a third party and anticipates that it has the potential to cause major supply chain disruptions. Lastly, Dr. Grandin recommends simple yet effective outcome measures for audits that can be taught in a short training session that includes practice audits.View her five domains paper here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36290216/Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to invite more people to join us at the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table.  If you want one of our Real Science Exchange t-shirts, screenshot your rating, review, or subscription, and email a picture to anh.marketing@balchem.com. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP This week Talking Luft's Top Six Most Influential is from one of my personal favourite races with one of my best mates from the peloton: it's the Vuelta España with Sam Bewley.  Sam had a great career on the road, riding all three Grand Tours in his thirteen-year pro career and is now a successful DS at Israel Premier Tech. We were teammates at Green Edge and rode a couple of our Vuelta's together back in the day, which made making this pod even better!  Each Grand Tour has its own characteristics, and the Vuelta would have to be the wildest of the three. We both raced there in the 2010s when the race was settling into its current format with the super tough finishes and more open racing than we were used to at the time.  As always, our selection of the most influential parts of the race includes some of the action from the stages, but also the stories, the climbs, crosswinds, routes, and riders that have made this race so special. There are even a few first-hand accounts of some of those key stages and some nice bits of detail that you would certainly never have seen on TV!  I loved having Sam back on the pod and being able to chat about some of those stages and moments, as well as one superb post-race beer session (post our race - if not the race…) which I have to say is my absolute favourite moment from any of my Grand Tour experiences; a special memory and a great story to tell.  This one is a blast, and on the eve of the race itself, I hope it leaves you thirsty for a bit more Vuelta action! I have teamed up with Elderton Wines to bring you the Life in the Peloton x Elderton Shiraz! It's full-bodied, rich and classic and I can't wait for you to try it! The Dirty Docker is almost here! Part 1  On this week's episode we talked to Stu Bewley of Alder Springs vineyard. In Part One, we talk about Stu's journey, from combining fruit juice, carbonation and wine in a garage with his high school friend to create a “wine cooler,” to selling his California Coolers brand for $200 million by the time he was 30. It's the legacy of his California Coolers that has, for better or worse, helped create today's growing craze for alcoholic seltzers.

On Part Two of our interview with Stu Bewley of Alder Springs vineyard, we learn how Stu was inspired to carve Alder Springs vineyard out of northern Mendocino wilderness after passing on a vineyard known as To Kalon (yes, THAT To Kalon). He shares what it is like to farm grapes in the wilds of Mendocino bear country with zero infrastructure and with environmental conservation in mind. Much like the Under The Wire project itself, Stu's undertaking on the ridges west of Laytonville has no domestic historic precedent and has been filled with learnings, challenges and, happily, some great successes

As Dixon, McLaughlan and Armstrong fly the flag well for New Zealand in IndyCar, we've also got van Gisbergen in winning form in NASCAR, and Liam Lawson waiting for his time in F1.   Closer to home we have the next big superstar, according to a number of analysts in the NZ racing scene.   His name is Tom Bewley and won this year's Toyota 86 Championship at only 16 years old.    This weekend he made his debut at the Porsche GT3, taking pole after being sick for the first practice session, and ended up finishing his debut in second place.  Bewley told Mike Hosking that seeing so many Kiwis succeeding in motorsports definitely encouraged him to chase his dream, but you have to stick to your own track and make it at your own pace.  He said that you can't compare yourself to other people and how fast they're going and where they're heading to and what they're racing.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nothing exists in a vacuum, Taplines listener, and beer certainly doesn't. When Stuart Bewley and his cofounder dreamed up the idea for California Cooler, single-serve fermented-fruit-based ready-to-drink in the mid-70s, they couldn't have known that it would inspire knockoffs from heavyweights in the wine industry (e.g., E. & J. Gallo's Bartles and Jaymes) and the beer industry, too (Miller's Matilda Bay, for example.) And get this: Bewley says the long-running boycott of a certain big-on-the-west-coast brewer was instrumental in getting California Cooler onto the trucks of distributors who otherwise might've not had anything to do with it. Nothing exists in a vacuum, after all. Don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Instead, it is a discrete and autonomous mental system that has an idiosyncratic range of emotion, style of expression, set of abilities, desires, and view of the world. In other words, it is as if we each contain a society of people, each of whom is at a different age and has different interests, talents, and temperaments." On this week's program, we discuss the economic impacts of professional and college sports on Louisville with Dr. Michael Bewley, a lecturer at Purdue University on Economic Analysis, Biometrics, and Supply Chains. Dr. Bewley has a PhD in Economics from the University of Kentucky. He also serves as President and CEO of the Louisville-based Enalysis company, providing survey research and economic analysis for many types of clients. Economic Impact is a weekly discussion and review of economic issues and topics at the national, state and local levels. There is a particular emphasis on items affecting the Louisville metro area and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The perspectives offered will be those from "heterodox economics." Heterodox economics, as opposed to orthodox or mainstream economics or "neoclassical" economics, is more eclectic in its approach to economics and allows pluralism of views and concepts. It also harkens back to when economics and political science were pretty much joined together in one discipline called political economy. Today's economists do not like the term "political economy", but Tom thinks they miss a lot by assuming that markets exist in a vacuum and that all consumers/people are either nearly perfectly rational or completely rational. Professor Lambert is in the Economics department at UofL and has recently been assigned to their equine industry programs as an applied economist. Prior to UofL, he taught full time for Northern Kentucky University in their Master of Public Administration program for several years. Before that he was with the economics department at IU Southeast for many years. Professor Lambert has a MS in economics from UK and a PhD in Urban and Public Affairs from UofL with a concentration in urban economics and economic development. Economic Impact airs on Forward Radio WFMP Louisville 106.5fm and forwardradio.org on Mondays at 6am, and Tuesdays at 11am and 7:30pm.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to work behind the scenes at some of the world's biggest bike races, what happens back there in the crazy, chaotic realm of the race convoy, and what the world of a Directeur Sportif is like?   Obviously, I've worked up close with DS's throughout my career, but I've never been behind the wheel, and when I was asked to support a couple of riders at this years' Aussie Road Nats, I realised I didn't really know that much about what goes into the job of being a Directeur Sportif.   So, before I made my big debut as a DS – in the car supporting Brendan Johnston, and Simon Clarke – I needed to learn the ropes, quickly. Fortunately, I've got a bunch of Directors at various stages of their careers that I could call on to help me get up to speed before the big day. For this episode, I chatted with seasoned DS's Brett Lancaster, Gregory Rast, Tom Southam and Zak Dempster, as well as newly minted DS, Sam Bewley.   As an ex-pro it was also a chance for me to ask some of the questions about being a DS that really bothered me during my career – like hey mate, don't you remember what it's like to be out here riding?! But also, it gave me a glimpsde into how much work goes on behind the scenes, from the race prep, team communication, and logistics, to managing personalities, rosters and team expectations, and I have to say (spoiler warning), it was a lot more than I expected.   I asked all the big questions – what kind of rider makes the best DS? Do you even have to have been a rider at all to become a DS? And crucially, do former pros turned DS's remember how hard it is out there?! Some of the answers surprised me, but it was fascinating to learn from experience, and get behind the wheel myself and road-test my new skills.   I hope you enjoy the listen and learning about one of the behind-the-scenes aspects of pro cycling.   Cheers,   Mitch
