Heart Eyes isn't your typical horror film or romantic comedy. It's a genre-bending fusion of sweet romance and chilling slasher horror. Cinematographer Stephen Murphy, BSC, ISC has crafted a film that authentically captures the tone of both genres. This ambitious goal required a nuanced approach to lighting and color, a visual language that could seamlessly transition between heartwarming romance and heart-pounding terror. Director Josh Ruben “was very clear from the beginning that he wanted to make a very earnest love letter to rom-coms AND to slasher movies- particularly rom-coms and slasher movies from the 80s and 90s,” says Stephen. “He didn't want us to shortchange either one. He wanted to make a genuine rom-com and a genuine slasher movie, but in the same film.” Stephen found it challenging mixing the two genres to find the right balance. The film begins with the warm, inviting tones of a classic rom-com, bathed in warmer colors that create a sense of comfort and affection. As the sinister presence of the Heart Eyes Killer emerges, the palette begins to shift into blue, moonlight shade that signal the arrival of horror. It was important to Stephen that the horror elements wouldn't succumb to gloomy, underexposed visuals. He aimed for clarity, using harder backlights and harder shadows to maintain a sense of definition and keep the actors looking their best, even amidst the chaos. This approach ensured that the rom-com aesthetic persisted, even as the slasher elements intensified. Both Ruben and Stephen were influenced by the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer and Jaws. They used storyboards for key moments in certain scenes, then built the rest of the scenes around the boards. Filmed in New Zealand, Heart Eyes was a fast-paced production, moving from greenlight to release in just twelve months. The film's horror sequences relied on a blend of practical and visual effects, with the Heart Eyes Killer's mask being a prime example of practical effects. Made in Los Angeles, Stephen had time to practice lighting it and testing the light-up eyes. During preproduction, Stephen discovered that keeping constantly moving lights on the killer in the mask kept it looking sinister. Stephen's previous experience working on horror films proved invaluable on Heart Eyes. He also was a cinematographer on the TV series Atlanta and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, for episodes shot in Europe. On these projects, he enjoyed the creative freedom to explore different styles and shoot those episodes a bit differently than the rest of the series. Heart Eyes is currently available for purchase on VOD. The resignation of Ireland's Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has come as a shock. He suffered defeats in two referendums earlier this month, where the public voted against the government's plans to remove "sexist" language from the constitution. On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson is joined by Ireland correspondent Stephen Murphy to look at Varadkar's legacy as both the youngest and openly gay Taoiseach.Plus, in Wales, history has also been made as Vaughan Gething was sworn in as first minister - the first black leader of a European country. He narrowly won the Welsh Labour leadership election against Jeremy Miles, with 51.7% of the vote. Questions over some of his campaign donations from a company run by a man twice convicted for environmental offences, and Conservative criticism over Welsh Labour's budget spending, give Gething plenty to defend and tackle in his first weeks in office. Niall explores what's in the new Welsh first minister's in-tray with Tomos Evans, our Wales reporter. Richard Wyn Jones, director of the Wales Governance Centre and dean of public affairs at Cardiff University, also talks about Mr Gething.Producer: Rosie Gillott Assistant producer: Iona Brunker Interviews producer: Melissa Tutesigensi-Charles Editor: Wendy Parker
"I remember my dad, he sent me an apologetic video -- initially I was like 'dad I don't want to listen to this pseudo scholarship, this mental gymnastics the church isn't what it claims to be, come on give it a rest.' He was like just watch it. I sort of recognized that I'm not being very open-minded, I'm not willing to listen. I'd already come to a firm conclusion so I was like fine I'll watch it. It was by a guy called Bruce Porter and it was about the connections and correspondences and parallels between our temple endowment and ancient Egyptian temple rituals. If I'm being intellectually honest and consistent, just as I couldn't deny that there are things which are similar - if not identical, between a Masonic ritual and the temple endowment, there were things which correspond quite well. So I was like, 'okay, I can understand why a true believer they might think that the temple endowment is like a restoration of an ancient temple ritual.' So that sort of sparked some curiosity and I started to explore more evidence for things like this." Join Luz Cabrales on a special episode of Scranton Talks, featuring Tierney Violet Joyce, Zach Sprowls & Maureen Mcguigan, all performing at the Scranton Fringe Festival 2023.Tierney Violet Joyce posted her first episode of 52 Mondays on January 2, 2023 - and hasn't missed a Monday yet! Tierney started this project to share her passion for Musical Theatre: the songs she loves, the shows that inspire her, and her respect for all of the elements that come together to create live theater. She will be joined on stage with the incredibly talented Stephen Murphy as Music Director and Accompanist. Tierney is excited to bring 52 Mondays The Cabaret to the Scranton Fringe Festival.Scranton-based pianist and composer, Zach Sprowls, presents the world premier of an instrumental telling of what it's like to start over. Featuring the piano and a live string trio, Zach uses elements of neoclassical minimalism, melody, and aching harmony to translate his own life experiences into a deeply-felt journey for listeners. His music has already been featured on highly-acclaimed KEXP radio and performed by members of the US Army Strings and the National Symphony Orchestra. For fans of Max Richter, Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm - or really anyone who knows the ups and downs of growing up - this is an experience you don't want to miss. This event is part of the Scranton Fringe Festival.Maureen McGuigan-Death is probably the most taboo subject in our society and rarely discussed enough, but the only certain thing in life is that we will die. We know this intellectually but facing and coping with the loss of loved ones and our own ultimate death in a real and visceral way can be scary and overwhelming. In this one-woman show, Maureen McGuigan shares her own struggle with dealing with this topic through humor, personal stories, history, and science. Directed by Alicia Grega featuring projection and music by Jason Smeltzer, the performance encourages us to reflect on and discuss death more to help us live a more authentic and meaningful life.

If you're struggling to work out how to feel after the game at the weekend then you're not alone. We lost but... did we really win when you consider the performance exceeded all expectations? The answer, of course, is no. Your outlook on the game will depend on whether you're a glass-half-empty or glass-half-full type of person. Half of Ulster's fan-base has chosen to focus on the glass being partly full with several impressive individual performances, an early lead and a spirited effort from a heavily rotated Ulster side. The other half of Ulster's fan base is choosing to focus on what is missing from the glass: namely, the ability to hold a 17 point lead and the fact that we lost to a Connacht side who were there for the taking. Whatever your view of the game, we hope you enjoy listening to the podcast as we attempt to make sense of Ulster. Are the 'glass-half-full brigade' delusional? Are the 'glass-half-empty crew' simply world-weary keyboard warriors? There's only one way to find out and that's by discussing it with our panel and, hopefully, in the next 45 minute to an hour we will figure out what's going right or wrong with Ulster. I'm joined by regular panelists: Jack, Ian, Fergus and making a special guest appearance this week is Connacht fan and host of the excellent Master of None podcast Stephen Murphy. We also hope to be joined by Munster fan, Caolan Scully from the Caolan S Rugby podcast and Red Army Pod to give us an insight ahead of the Ulster Munster game on Friday night.

When Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles become one of the most successful cartoons / toy lines / brands of the late 1980s, the creators' own Mirage Studios decided to put out a cartoon-inspired spinoff comic targeted at a more all-ages audience than the original gritty black & white series was. The monthly TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ADVENTURES -- spearheaded by Mirage artists Ryan Brown and Stephen Murphy -- wound up running for 72 issues over the next 7 years, and featured a phenomenal amount of lore and worldbuilding rarely seen in tie-in comics of the era. When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon erupted in popularity, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird required a comic book that kids could flock toward, which could not be their original hyper-violent Mirage Studios series. In 1988, they partnered with the industry's most wholesome brand, Archie Comics, launching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures. The second TMNT comic series began with strict adaptations of the cartoon but quickly swerved down far weirder avenues. Under the guidance of Ryan Brown and Stephen Murphy (aka Dean Clarrain), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures tackled prescient environmental issues while testing the boundaries of what's acceptable as "all-ages" entertainment. In this week's episode, we jump into the far future, where the four brothers are no longer teenagers but Cyber Samurai Ninja Turtles! The Shredder poses no threat. Instead, the brothers must face off against Verminator-X, Craniac, and the disembodied brain of history's most wretched dictator. The "Dreamland" storyline in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures reveals a family unit operating at peak form, but when danger reaches a crescendo, two brothers will be tested. Our heroes have aged, but they still fall into the same roles we've come to expect. The question becomes, are we forever shackled to the sibling roles we took on as children? Can our relationships with others break us free from deep-seated family tension? Helping us understand the TMNT familial dynamics is Dawn Huebner, Ph.D., and her book "The Sibling Survival Guide: Surefire Ways to Solve Conflicts, Reduce Rivalry, and Have More Fun with Your Brothers and Sisters, illustrated by Kara McHale. Comic issues covered in this episode: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures issues 62 - 66, published by Archie Comics between November 1994 and March 1995. These comics were written by Stephen Murphy and Chris Allan, penciled by Chris Allan and Gray Morrow, inked by Brian Thomas and Jon D'agostino, colored by Barry Grossman, and lettered by Gary Fields. Stephen Murphy worked his up way from his start as a police officer in a small West Virginia town to the Deputy Assistant Administrator of the DEA. During his 37 years in law enforcement Steve was stationed all around the world, most notably as one of the two Americans present and involved in the hunt for the largest cocaine distributor in the world, Pablo Escobar. Murphy was present during the chase and eventual shooting resulting in the death of Escobar, and took all the photographs seen in the media following the event. Instead of accepting that he would never again work a drug trafficking case the size and scope of Escobar's, Murphy continued to aggressively pursue local and international drug dealers just as he had pursued Escobar. His work ethic, conviction, integrity and charcater assisted him in climbing the ranks within DEA before his retirement in July 2013. Murphy continues to serve in law enforcement roles, and lectures around the country on drug trafficking trends, security-related challenges and what it was like to pursue a criminal the magnitude of Escobar. He has appeared on a variety of television specials on Escobar's death. Along with Javier Peña, he serves as a subject matter expert and senior consultant for the hit Netflix series Narcos. Now, looking forward, Steve is back again with his DEA Narcos partner Javier Peña to lead an investigation into a history making cold case. Just prior to World War II, the worlds most high-tech commercial airliner with secret military grade engines was on a seemingly routine mission - but was it? On board Pan Am Airways flight 229 Hawaii Clipper were fifteen passengers and crew bound for Hong Kong from San Francisco with three million dollars (46 million today) in goldbacked bank notes. Why? Allegedly ransom for missing aviatrix Amelia Earhart. The plane -missing. The crew - allegedly murdered by rogue Japanese agents and buried on a remote Pacific Island. If Steve and Javier can find the remains of these fifteen Americans - the start date of World War II may have to be changed in our history books.
The Golden-shouldered Parrot is rapidly disappearing from the landscape in northern Australia, where this species requires a very particular habitat - one that is disappearing due to changed land uses over the period of colonisation, especially as the patterns of burning and clearing have changed. Some landowners are trying to reverse this process, and the owners of Artemis Station, which occupies some historically prime habitat for the Golden-shouldered Parrot, have been supporting the research required to understand what is needed to secure the local population, and raise funds to continue the research and practical works required to protect these stunning parrots. With involvement from the local traditional owners, and researchers like Dr. Stephen Murphy from the University of Queensland, future looks a little brighter for these specialist parrots. Check out the Atemis Nature Fund website here, and please support the work they do, if you can! Currently trying to get some eyes and subscribers on The Bird Emergency on YouTube, so I can put a bit more effort into the video side of things, so if you would like more visual content, please subscribe, and I will watch with interest if that's what you want!
When it comes to regulating and producing medicalized cannabis products, different countries have a variety of approaches. The American field of medicalized cannabis has followed a very different path to Europe. In today's episode, we speak with Stephen Murphy, co-founder and CEO of Prohibition Partners, a cannabis-focused business intelligence and consultancy company. Prohibition Partners LIVE, its flagship conference, will be taking place later this month. In our conversation, we discuss the ways that Europe and North America differ when it comes to cannabis and what we can learn from those differences. In Europe, Murphy explains, cannabis products are held to the same standards of accountability and repeatability as other pharmaceuticals. While these high standards are certainly good practice, it doesn't adequately consider that cannabis is a plant, which means it does not have the same stability as chemical compounds. We discuss the lack of access this results in for patients, the differences between hemp and cannabis with higher levels of THC, and the tremendous proven environmental benefits of growing cannabis and producing hemp that could play a big role in the fight against global warming, which Stephen is eager to discuss in the upcoming Prohibition Partners LIVE conference.Executive producer, Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man. The Cannabis Enigma podcast is a co-production of The Cannigma and Americans for Safe Access. Music by Desca.

I talk with my cousin Stephen Murphy who just cycled around the whole coastline of Ireland, and raised 15,000 for a local mental health charity. It's a great chat.
