We take to the road for this week's Young Stock Podcast as Sarah McIntosh attends the Teagasc/FBD student of the year award ceremony. The awards, sponsored by FBD, were presented to the top graduates of Teagasc Level 6 agriculture, horticulture, equine and forestry training programmes in 2024. With 4,000 students across the Teagasc college campuses, it was a great opportunity to meet the top of the crop students, who took home prizes on the day. Each finalist was nominated by their teacher and Teagasc college faculty and selected from a judging panel. On the day Kate Curran, who is no stranger to the Young Stock Podcast, was awarded the overall title of Teagasc/FBD student of the year for 2024. We get the first interview with Kate as the shock of winning the award sets in and she outlines what it means to her. We also hear from Danny Doyle, who took home the title last year as he fills us in on what he has been up to over the last year while giving advice to this year's winner. Thomas O'Connor from Tralee, Co Kerry, who took home the winning title for the full-time agriculture category speaks to us about his educational pathway and why he decided to attend a Teagasc course. Tipperary native Niamh Duggan, Carrick-on-Suir, took home the award for the full-time other land-based enterprises category. She speaks about progressing onto the Level 8 degree in South East Technological University and what her plans are for the summer months. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Rialacháin nua maidir leis an mbulaí ollmhór sínithe. Rural and Community Development Minister Heather Humphreys has signed new regulations that will ban XL bully (or giant bully) dogs in this State. Tá an tAire Forbartha Tuaithe agus Pobail Heather Humphreys tar éis rialacháin nua a shíniú a chuirfeas cosc ar mhadraí den phór bulaí XL (nó bulaí ollmhór) sa Stát seo. It will be a two stage process. Próiseas dhá chéim a bheas ann. From next Tuesday, October 1, it will not be allowed to import, breed, sell or give to another person a giant bull. Ón Máirt seo chugainn, 1 Deireadh Fómhair, ní bheidh cead bulaí ollmhór a iompórtáil, a phórú, a dhíol ná a thabhairt do dhuine eile. From 1 February 2025, a person without an exemption certificate would not be allowed to have a giant bully. Ón 1 Feabhra 2025, ní bheadh cead bulaí ollmhór a bheith ag duine gan teastas díolúine. If these regulations are not met, the dogs can be captured and killed. Mura gcomhlíonfar na rialacháin sin, is féidir na madraí a ghabháil agus a bhású. Local authorities are responsible for issuing exemption certificates but dogs must first be licensed and clipped and microchipped. Is iad na húdáráis áitiúla a bheas freagrach as teastais díolúine a lamháil ach ní mór do mhadraí a bheith ceadúnaithe agus gearrtha agus micrishlis a bheith iontu i dtosach. The XL bully is already completely banned in the North and Britain and Minister Humphreys believes that this State should join them. Tá cosc iomlán ar an mbulaí XL cheana féin sa Tuaisceart agus sa Bhreatain agus creideann an tAire Humphreys gur cheart don Stát seo a bheith ar aon bhuille leo. The safety of the public is her biggest concern, she said, especially in light of the recent attacks by massive bullies on people in this country. Sábháilteacht an phobail is mó is cás léi, a dúirt sí, go háirithe i bhfianaise ionsaithe a rinne bulaithe ollmhóra ar dhaoine sa tír seo le gairid. A 23-year-old woman, Nicole Morey, died after being attacked by a massive bully at her home in Fedamare in Co Limerick at the beginning of the summer. Bhásaigh bean 23 bliain d'aois, Nicole Morey, tar éis do bhulaí ollmhór í a ionsaí ina teach cónaithe i bhFeadamair i gCo Luimnigh i dtús an tsamhraidh. Eleven days ago, a man was injured when one of those dogs grabbed him in north Dublin. Aon lá dhéag ó shin, gortaíodh fear nuair a rug ceann de na madraí sin air i dtuaisceart Bhaile Átha Cliath. Last month, a one-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was attacked by a huge bully in Co Kerry. An mhí seo caite, gortaíodh go dona cailín beag bliain d'aois nuair a thug bulaí ollmhór fogha fúithi i gCo Chiarraí. In November 2022, a young boy, Alejandro Mizsan, was seriously injured when he was attacked by a huge bully while playing with his friends in a park in Enniscorthy in Co Wexford. I mí na Samhna 2022, bhain drochghortuithe do bhuachaill óg, Alejandro Mizsan, nuair a d'ionsaigh bulaí ollmhór é agus é ag súgradh lena chairde i bpáirc in Inis Córthaidh i gCo Loch Garman. The new law, however, is a bitter drink for people with massive bullies and for animal welfare organizations. Is searbh an deoch í an dlí nua, áfach, do dhaoine a bhfuil bulaithe ollmhóra acu agus d'eagraíochtaí cúraim ainmhithe leis. Yesterday, a group of them marched as far as Dáil Éireann demanding that the new regulations be amended. Inné, mháirseáil grúpa díobh chomh fada le Dáil Éireann agus iad ag éileamh na rialacháin nua a leasú. Supporting them are Chris Andrews from Sinn Féin and Neasa Hourigan from the Green Party. Ag tacú leo tá Chris Andrews ó Shinn Féin agus Neasa Hourigan ón gComhaontas Glas. RTÉ News and Current Affairs A two-stage ban on the XL bully (or huge bully) in this State

The fifth international John McCarthy AI Summer School event will take place on the 12th and 13th of September 2024. This year's theme is AI for Sport Minister Dara Calleary announced the launch of the fifth John McCarthy AI Summer School, themed 'AI for Sport' in the RDI hub on Friday 28th of June. Sport is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by technological advancements with data at its core. For professional athletes, data analytics offer critical insights that can significantly enhance performance metrics. For fitness enthusiasts, data provides a systematic approach to monitor progress and achieve personal fitness objectives. For spectators, data enriches the understanding of live action, whether in the stadium, on the field, or on the screen. John McCarthy AI Summer School in Kerry The premise is both straightforward and compelling: enhanced knowledge leads to improved performance and enjoyment. The sophisticated tools and data analytics that enable the attainment of personal bests are now widely accessible, benefiting not only elite sportspeople but also the general public. We are delighted to announce that the following partners - RDI hub, Microsoft Ireland, Munster Technological University, the SFI ADAPT Centre for AI Driven Digital Content Technology, AI Ireland, along with new partners Red Chair Recruitment, Skillnet Innovation Exchange, Connected Hubs and Western Development Commission, will joint host a hybrid Artificial Intelligence Summer School event on the 12th and 13th of September 2023. This year's summer school will take a deep dive into the area of AI for Sport with both core and applied research tracks. With a stellar international lineup over two half days, this will be an unmissable event, including keynotes and panel discussions along with networking opportunities. The core research elements of this summer school will appeal to professors, post docs, PhD students, researchers and graduate students in the fields of AI, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. The applied elements have a broader appeal and are accessible to anyone with an interest in Artificial intelligence and the various way it can be deployed. The RDI hub building is dedicated to John McCarthy as a tribute to the Stanford University computer scientist. McCarthy was one of the founders of the discipline of artificial intelligence and his father was born in Cromane, near Killorglin in Co Kerry. In the late 1950s McCarthy invented LISP which became the programming language of choice for AI applications. AI has had a truly transformative effect on our lives in recent years, particularly with the advent of Generative AI. AI technology has risen to prominence in personalising the content we consume daily, such as customised sports highlights and tailored fitness advice. However, AI's potential in sports extends far beyond this. From enhancing player performance through data analytics to revolutionising fan engagement with interactive experiences, AI is set to redefine the sporting landscape. We look forward to discussing these diverse applications with our speaker panel. Our aim is that the John McCarthy AI Summer School will become a calendar moment for the development of AI and the sharing of knowledge. Every year we bring you a stellar international lineup of the best and brightest minds working in Artificial Intelligence. The full speaker list will be announced shortly. Minister Dara Calleary had this to say at the event launch: 'I am delighted to be here today in the RDI hub in Killorglin to announce the launch of the fifth John McCarthy AI Summer school, which will take place on September 12th and 13th. A key event in the calendar for many people living in rural Ireland, is the Mr Personality Festival organised by Kilkenny Macra. This week, we have a special Young Stock Podcast as Sarah McIntosh and Martin Merrick take us behind the scenes as they judge this year's competition. Taking place in Clonmel, from the 5 to 7 April, a weekend full of events saw 25 contestants from Macra clubs across the country battle it out in order to be named Mr Personality 2024. From making the judges ham and cheese sandwiches, to milking a cow on stage, this year's contestants didn't make it an easy task to pick a winner with a high calibre of talent's displayed during the on-stage interviews.Last year's winner Andrew Dunne speaks to us about what he has been up to since winning the title in 2023, and the impact it has had on his life.We also managed to catch up with a few of the contestants during the weekend to find out why they wanted to enter the competition and how they found the experience. The event wouldn't be possible without the hard work of the organising committee, we spoke to Christine O'Neill chairperson on the work that goes on behind the scenes.Taking home the Mr Personality 2024 title was Mark Riordan from Kenmare, Co Kerry. Speaking to us the day after he won, Mark emphasises the importance of staying together during the tough challenges young farmers are currently facing. “We talk about silage; we talk about breeding and we talk about all the challenges with farming but there is a lot happening on farm and there is a lot happening in farmers heads that we don't talk about enough. Its not easy out there at the moment and if you look at the weather for the next week especially, it's probably disheartening but I think as a community, as Macra we have to be there for each other, were all in the same boat and this will pass,” says Mark. Tá bordaithe ar 100 dídeanaí breise ón Úcráin le dul chun cónaithe i gCill Airne, Co Chiarraí, as seo go deireadh na bliana. The Integration Department indicated yesterday that they have made an arrangement with the company Millstreet Equestrian Services, owned by the Dúgan family from Mill Street, to provide accommodation for the refugees. Thug an Roinn Lánpháirtíochta le fios inné go bhfuil socrú déanta acu leis an gcomhlacht Millstreet Equestrian Services, ar le muintir Dhúgáin ó Shráid an Mhuilinn é, chun cóiríocht a chur ar fáil do na dídeanaithe. Why accounting for nature is a priority for Ireland

The team behind a pioneering project for nature, INCASE, has issued a series of recommendations to value, restore and protect Ireland's resources through applying a natural capital accounting framework as a national priority. Accounting for nature can help bring greater prosperity to Ireland Launching its final report in Trinity College Dublin, the EPA Research-funded project - Irish Natural Capital Accounting for Sustainable Environments - brought together a multi-disciplinary team of ecologists and economists from four Irish universities to pilot the UN-backed System of Environmental Economic Accounting-Ecosystem Accounting (or "SEEA-EA"), in four Irish sub- catchments - the Bride in Co Cork; the Caragh, Co Kerry; the Dargle, Co Wicklow and the Figile in Co Offaly. Professor Jane Stout, ecologist and principal investigator, and Vice-President for Biodiversity and Climate Action at Trinity College Dublin, said: "Investing in natural capital accounting is essential to ensure sustainable flows of goods and services for future generations and is vital to the wellbeing of our society and economy." She added "We all depend on nature, yet we continue to ignore that our natural systems are continually degraded and destroyed. To bring nature into everyday policy and decision-making, the natural capital approach embeds the language of business and economics. This allows nature to be considered in a systematic way alongside other fundamental 'stocks', which we account for in our national accounts, as well as demonstrating how natural systems underpin important economic sectors. "As with people, the condition, or health, of these natural stocks influences their ability to sustain flows of goods and services, and ultimately the benefits to people. These hidden benefits include carbon storage, the provision of clean water, food and medicines. Without these benefits, many that we get for free from nature, there would be significant effects on our physical and financial health." One INCASE output is a paper on applying ecosystem accounting to develop a risk register for peatlands to inform restoration targets. Lead author, Dr Catherine Farrell said: "In the Figile catchment area, peatlands have been severely impacted by industrial peat extraction. This has had a massive impact on carbon storage and other ecosystem services. The Dargle in Wicklow has also considerable areas of degraded upland peatlands. Applying the natural capital accounting methods developed by the United Nations, we can see where damage is being done and where, and through which sectoral activities. This allows us to target measures to protect and restore these areas, by linking the accounts into policy and economic decisions across sectors. "The value of nature for physical and mental wellbeing, clean air and water, flood protection, shelter and food, diverse wildlife and habitats, can all be factored into decisions using the framework. Even if these values are hard to articulate in financial terms, they should be accounted for in policy decisions that impact them." Since the initiation of the INCASE project in 2018, there has been significant international progress in implementing the SEEA-EA as a complementary metric to GDP, with the Central Statistics Office in Ireland taking up the task of developing ecosystem accounts here. Building natural capital (ecosystem & geosystem) accounts involves accessing a wide variety of Irish data sources. The INCASE project used over 200 datasets in all, from more than 30 agencies. This process highlighted the need for engagement with and collaboration across a range of data providers in Ireland, and the need for regular and reliable data collection. The team has issued a final report on INCASE's work, with the following recommendations: Developing and using natural capital accounting methods such as the SEEA-EA is a national priority and requires investment in expertise and shared nature-data infrastructure in Ireland. HORSEFLY CHRONICLES RADIO IS SPONSORED BY CARNATION    Long ago Vanessa Hogle was stuck. Knee deep in two jobs, a dead end relationship and no positive viewpoint regarding the future. Knowing something had to change she drew inspiration from her past and began to forge a new life for herself and her son. She had been involved in the paranormal community before and knew that's where she had to start. A former fellow investigator, had started up a publishing company and asked her to write about her experiences. Having "remote viewed" for a previous investigative team, and consulted for The "Leave or Die" episode of The Haunted, on Animal Planet, Vanessa had more than enough material to write a book. Subsequently fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Major life changes were happening, at this time, forcing Vanessa to re-access her life. Knowing there was nowhere to go but up, she let go of all that no longer supported her. Writing her first book, Soulscapes, which was released April 28th of 2015 and ending a six year dead end relationship, acted as a catalyst forcing her to come out of her shell and accept who she really was. It wasn't long before she began to network with like-minded individuals all over the world. Gaining insight, and experience, she set out to tell her story. Her para-biography, Giving up the Ghost, release date August 27th of 2015 laid it all out for the world to see. The struggles, the heartache, the confusion of growing up with certain gifts. During this time word of what Vanessa could do had gotten around. She began reading, and remote viewing, for multiple teams in the United States and abroad. Even co-hosting her own show, Edge of the Rabbit Hole for over 4 years. She also began to make numerous appearances on blogtalk radio, multiple podcast and You Tube. Her appearances include Beyond The Strange, Miami Ghost Chronicles, Stories of the Supernatural, multiple appearances on Spaced Out Radio, Necromancer Live, Paranormal Collaboration, Paranormal King, multiple appearances on Paranormal Connection Radio, Our Paranormal Stories and extensive appearances on Paranormal Zone TV. Her abilities and accomplishments have also been written about in Campus Ghost of Norman and Entertainment 2Morrow as well as KFOR news, in Oklahoma, who did a special segment "Is This a Great State or What?" on Vanessa. Through these shows, and social media, Vanessa has been able...in the last four years... to travel the world investigating and meeting those whom she has helped, remotely. Her travels have taken her to New Orleans, for Haunted Bourbon Paracon where, upon arriving, she was immediately contacted to do a special segment for the local news station 4WWL in regards to the Abita Springs Bakery. She has also investigated in Alton, Illinois at the Mineral Springs Hotel, Easton, PA at the Horsefly Chronicles House. Staten Island, NY and NJ for the Cropsey case, and documentary about the disappearance of Holly Ann Hughes. In West Virginia at Moundsville State Prison.
