My guest this week is Jan Brierton, a mam, a fashion stylist, and a poet. Her first collection What Day Is It? Who Gives a F*ck was published in 2021 after Jan's first ever poem went viral during lockdown. Everybody Is a Poem: Midlife in Rhymes is Jan's second collection published by New Island. In this pocket-sized book Jan riffs on menopause, midlife, the mental load, friendships, relationships, loss, and self-acceptance. On its release, Jan's second collection made the top 10 paperback non-fiction book charts. Plain-speaking and completely relatable, each of these 52 poems are served with Jan's signature combination of humour, wit, and poignancy. This is poetry for everybody. Since the publication of her debut book, Jan has appeared on RTE Nationwide, TV3's Six O Clock show, RTE Radio 1's Brendan O Connor Show, Ray Darcy Show, 2Fm, 98FM, The Irish Times Women's podcast and Mamia & Me with Amy Huberman. Jan's poems have been shared on social media by Jo Whiley and Emma Barnett (BBC Women's Hour) with over 30K views. Jan is the resident poet on the Ray Darcy Show on RTE Radio 1. With her passion for keeping poetry accessible, Jan's poems come to life with her engaging live performances. In May 2024 Jan opened with her hero Dr John Cooper Clark in Dublin's 3Olympia Theatre, where she debuted her homage to his world famous ‘I Wanna Be Yours' with her modern love poem ‘You'll Always Be For Me' She has read her poems on The Word and Manifesto stages at Electric Picnic, The London Irish Centre, The Mutiny Theatre, St Annes Park Rose Festival, Five Lamps Arts Festival, Drogheda Arts Festival, Dublin City Libraries and the Liberties Festival. Jan's poems ‘But' and ‘Sound Body' have featured in both of Aoibhin Garrihy's poetry anthologies. Jan brought her live show Wild Words to Dublin's Ambassador Theatre in November 2024, celebrating the power of poetry and prose with Donna Ashworth, PJ Gallagher and Emmet Kirwan. 2025 will see Jan open for John Cooper Clark in The London Palladium, The Nottingham Royal Concert Hall and the Manchester Co-Op Arena. Johansen reports that the Emma, the ships he was originally on, was attacked by the original crew of the Alert. After the fight, he and his crew too the Alert to a seemingly New Island. With the exception of 2 men, Johansen and another man, all died on the island. Thurston needs to find out what happened and he heads to Australia to try and find the man. There, he is told that Johansen moved with his wife back to Norway, and he sets off again to meet them in the North. When he arrives he finds out that Johansen had passed away, but his wife informs him that Johansen wrote a manuscript that she can't read as her English isn't good. Heading to on a boat to London, Thurston reads the Manuscript and learns of the horror that happened on the island.Support the Show.Thank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/IsaacBirchallvoKo-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
Charles H. Barnard, captain of the American sealing brig Nanina, had only the best of intentions. His aim was to ensure the survival of the people under his care. On June 11, 1813, Barnard and four other volunteers disembarked the anchored Nanina, climbed into a small boat, and sailed about 10 miles from New Island to Beaver Island, both part of the Falkland Islands archipelago in the South Atlantic. Armed with knives, clubs, lances, and guns, and with the assistance of Barnard's trusty dog, Cent, the five men planned to kill birds and hogs and take them back to the Americans and British who remained on the Nanina and were fast running out of fresh provisions. It was a mission of mercy. The hunt went well, and within a few days the boat was filled to the gunwales with the bloody carcasses of slain animals. But when the men sailed back to New Island late on June 14, they were greeted with an alarming sight. The Nanina was gone. Stunned, confused, and angry, the men hauled the boat up onto the beach and, according to Barnard, “awaited the approach of daylight in the most impatient and tormenting anxiety.” Sleeping fitfully in the cold night air, they hoped that in the morning light they would find a letter telling them why the Nanina had left, and when it was coming back.A frantic search at dawn turned up nothing: no note either in a bottle or hung conspicuously from a piece of wood or a boulder. They saw only sand, rocks, scrubby vegetation, and birds in the distance, walking on the beach or flying overhead. The events leading up to this abandonment, and what happened afterward, produce a story with so many unlikely threads, and a cast including such exceptionally colorful characters, that one might think that it sprang from the pen of a fiction writer with an overactive imagination. And yet, the story is true. It is a tale involving a shipwreck, British and Americans meeting under the most stressful circumstances in a time of war, kindness and compassion, drunkenness, the birth of a child, treachery, greed, lying, a hostile takeover, stellar leadership, ingenuity, severe privation, the great value of a good dog, perseverance, endurance, threats, bullying, banishment, a perilous thousand-mile open-ocean journey in a 17.5-foot boat, an improbable rescue mission in a rickety ship, and legal battles over a dubious and disgraceful wartime prize. And it all started with two ships—one American, the other British—sailing to the Falklands from different directions. To explore this story is today's guest, Eric Dolan, author of Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World.”

Fresh off the Inaugural Lighthouse Point Cruise, Sandy shares thoughts on this new island. She'll give some comparisons to Castaway Cay and things to think about when visiting!
Always the Disney fashionistas, Mickey and Minnie are getting new designer clothes for the opening of Lookout Cay later this year. This story, plus Celebrate Soulfully styles and what to pack for your February 2024 Walt Disney World vacation. Bahamian fashion designer, Theodore Elyett, styles Mickey and Minnie for their Disney Cruise Lookout Cay Debut Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse turned to Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett for their brand new outfits to celebrate the opening of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Not surprisingly, the outfits have a distinct Bahamian flair, inspired by the bright and colorful spirit of Junkanoo, which is a Bahamas festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades.“The beauty of Mickey and Minnie's looks are that they are literally ‘Junkanoo Fun in the Sun,'” said Mr. Elyett. “When you talk about the print, pattern, color, texture of Junkanoo, they've got that.”As with just about everything Disney, the details matter. Raffia is a natural material made from the leaves of Raffia palm trees and it's used in The Bahamas to decorate accessories. Eleuthera is known for its pineapples. So if you look close, you'll see that both of these details are found in Mickey and Minnie's looks. It's not just Mickey and Minnie who will receive fresh new styles, Theodore Elyett will also design unique outfits for Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip ‘n' Dale to wear at Lookout Cay. All of this will debut in the summer of 2024.--Dress in Style to Celebrate Soulfully at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort Celebrate Soulfully is on in February to celebrate Black History Month at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. There are so many ways that you can get into the spirit when it comes to your vacation and park style for this event. If you want to take the musical route, you can take a page from Disney's Soul. Another great inspiration is the 1920s jazz era, which make styles from Tiana and Disney's Princess and the Frog a good fit. If dressing up for Disney Parks is not your style (meaning you're not likely to be seen taking part in Disney Dapper Days), then a graphic t-shirt featuring a sax, piano or other jazz or soul musical instrument is good way to add a touch of soulful theming to your park style. Even concerts t-shirts from your favorite jazz, soul, blues or other musicians would be a perfect fit.-- What to Wear at Walt Disney World in February Always check the weather using a local Orlando weather station right before your trip to get the most accurate view of the weather you may have. While rain is hard to predict in Orlando, the temperatures are usually a little more reliable (at least as a good guideline). If you have a Walt Disney World vacation planned for February, here's what to consider when planning your wardrobe. While Florida weather can vary greatly and change on a moment's notice, February tends to lean towards cooler temperatures and cooler evenings. With the long-term forecast for February 2024 offering up daytime highs from the upper 50sF to the upper 70sF, it will really depend on when your vacation is taking place. Evening temperatures have an even wider range: from upper 30sF to upper 60sF. These wide swings are typical of transition months, but they can cause you fits when deciding exactly what you need to pack. While you may still get away with shorts and t-shirts during the day, be sure to pack a light jacket, hoodie or sweatshirt for the evening hours. It can get cool at night, so jeans/pants or leggings are also good to bring along. Rain may also impact your stay. It used to be that rain was a rarity for the winter months in Orlando, but that is no longer the case as the global climate and weather patterns continue to change.--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel Style PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, we that you enjoyed it. Ready? Fight! This week on To Kill A Delibird we continue discussing Pokemon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back! Our part 2 discussion covers the latter half of the movie and a seriously sleep deprived Kellan. The Mewtwo mystery reaches a boiling point and war has broken out. On the elusive “New Island”, the greatest Pokemon trainer in the world is revealed to also be the world's greatest Pokemon. Ash and the gang find themselves on the set of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Then we get the narrative of Megadeth's 90s classic “Holy Wars”, specifically the lines: “Brother killing brother, shedding blood across the land”. Pokemon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back is surprisingly good on rewatch and actually aged decently well. We had a shadow ball discussing this whole movie and we hope you have fun too! Coming Out: Author Andrew Meehan On Discovering He Writes Love Stories Andrew Meehan is nailing his colours to the mast. He writes love stories, he says – although it took him until his third and most recent novel to recognise it. It was only as he was working on his latest novel, Instant Fires, that realisation dawned. “Halfway through I discovered, ‘Andrew, you write love stories. OK, it took you a while to cop on to the fact it's what you do'.” Looking back, he understands that all three of his novels are love stories. “You write what you want to read,” concludes Andrew. “We all get put in boxes and some of us invite ourselves into certain boxes and I'm now embracing the fact that I'm a writer of love stories.“ The novel is about two strangers who meet over the course of a week in Heidelberg, Germany, and feel an instant attraction – despite the woman, Ute, being convinced love is not for her. Their courtship is “diffident, gentle, awkward” and is characterised as a prelude to love by Andrew's publisher. Instant Fires by Andrew Meehan is published by New Island. Warning: This episode contains mild swearing. The Curiosity Series is an Arts Council podcast commissioned as part of the Council's 70th anniversary celebrations hosted by writer, comedian and podcaster Maeve Higgins. In each episode, you'll hear artists involved in music, dance, poetry, literature, visual arts and theatre in conversation with Maeve as they get curious about each other's work, explore the integral role that creativity has played in their lives, and discuss the broader issues and themes that connect their art. In our final episode of the series, Maeve is joined by three writers from three different generations: poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin, playwright Rosaleen McDonagh and poet, translator, and critic Michael O'Loughlin as they explore the themes that have shaped each others artistic work and lives. Annemarie, Rosaleen and Michael speak to Maeve about insider/outsider perspectives in their artistic practice and about stepping into their own creative power, as well as the limitations and liberations of language and whether the personal is political in art. This thought-provoking conversation also addresses the wider issues of class and diversity within the arts world and fittingly brings this series of curiosity and exploration to a close. This episode of Blúiríní Béaloidis was recorded in the beautiful surrounds of the Museum of Literature Ireland, in the historic UCD Newman House on St Stephen's Green in the heart of Dublin - and, I might add - for the first time, in front of a live studio audience. This was a great pleasure for me personally, so thanks to Ian, Benedict, Katie and Simon at MoLI for their kindness and hospitality in having us along. This aim of this podcast is to present listeners with the richness, artistry and depth of vision to be found in our folk traditions, and to this end, each episode to date has taken a singular fragment of that tradition as its primary focus; holy wells, sacred trees, rites of passage, calendar observances, the house, and so on. This format, while useful for our purposes, is necessarily somewhat artificial as an approach, for in our own lives, tradition rarely compartmentalises itself so neatly, instead manifesting as a tapestry of many threads, and a chorus of many voices which serve to keep to the past present. For this episode however, instead of focusing on one aspect of tradition, we for the first time dedicate our explorations to one individual; Mairéad ‘Peig' Sayers who, by her artistry and mastery as a storyteller in the oral tradition, skilfully managed to express the ‘wisdom of the many in the wit of the few', and yet whose printed autobiographies, as Irene Lucchitti notes in an article in Folklore and Modern Irish writing: ‘experienced a decline in reputation, suffering critical disdain and schoolyard ridicule in equal measure'. Now, nearly sixty-five years after her death, we hope to provide a platform through which her tales might find a new audience, one which, it is hoped, may find in her a source of inspiration and insight. It is a pleasure then, to announce that quite apart from this podcast, our friends and colleagues at MoLI, having worked in collaboration with ourselves at the NFC, will host a nine month exhibition on Peig Sayers called 'Thar Bealach Isteach' / 'Into the Island', on the Blasket Island storytelling tradition, and the context in which priceless fieldwork collections of oral literature held today in the archives of the National Folklore Collection at UCD, were recorded from that community by the Irish Folklore Commission. With me to explore Peig's stories for this episode, I am hugely honoured to have been joined by Dr. Pádraig Ó Héalaí and Dr. Éilís Ní Dhuibhne. Pádraig is a retired Senior Lecturer in Modern Irish at NUI, Galway. His area of specialisation is Irish folklore and he has published on many aspects of this topic, including religious tradition, Blasket heritage and beliefs and practices associated with the supernatural. He is a former editor of the journal Béaloideas and with Bo Almqvist, he edited with Peig Sayers: Labharfad le Cách / I Will Speak To You All and Níl Deireadh Ráite (both of which were recently republished by New Island). Recently, he edited An Blascaod Trí Fhuinneog na Scoile (2015), a young teacher's account of her experience of life on the Great Blasket when it was still home to a vibrant community. Éilís Ní Dhuibhne was born in Dublin. Author of more than thirty books, her works include The Dancers Dancing, The Shelter of Neighbours, Cailíní Beaga Ghleann na mBláth and Hurlamaboc, among others. Her most recent books are Twelve Thousand Days: A Memoir, Little Red and Other Stories (Blackstaff 2020), and Look! It's a Woman Writer; Irish Literary Feminisms 1970-2020 (ed.) (Arlen House, 2021) As well as being a writer, she is a folklore scholar and has written extensively on aspects of traditional narrative. She has been the recipient of many literary awards, most recently the Pen Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Irish Literature. In Autumn 2020 she held the Burns Scholarship at Boston College. That set the stage for the career he pursued, first as the Executive Director at The Nature Conservancy, and then as a founder of Terracycle Investments, a socially-conscious real estate firm. Now Paul heads up Real Estate Investment at New Island Capital, one of the largest family offices in the country, and one of the first to focus on impact investment ... before such a thing really existed. New Island invests in growing companies as well as farms, forests, and, of course, real estate at scale! If you'd like to join me in my quest to rethink real estate, there are two simple things you can do. Irish poet and author Julieann Campbell joined the podcast. Born in Derry in 1976, the former reporter gave up the newsroom after a decade to concentrate on motherhood, poetry and collecting oral histories. Julieann's first solo poetry collection, 'Milk Teeth' was published in 2015 by Guildhall Press (Derry), and she was one of many contributors to their vast 2008 compendium, 'City of Music: Derry's Music Heritage.' Alongside Dr. Tom Herron, she co-edited the 2008 collection, 'Harrowing of the Heart: The Poetry of Bloody Sunday', which brought together - for the first time - myriad artistic responses to the 1972 massacre. Works by established artists such as Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel, John Lennon and Christy Moore merge seamlessly alongside those of Derry writers, be they eyewitnesses, relatives, poets or activists. Playwright Brian Friel was among attendees at its launch in January 2008 at Derry's Guildhall. The same year saw Julieann winning First Prize for a Poetry Collection in Donegal's Charles Macklin Poetry Competition. A former Chair of the Bloody Sunday Trust in Derry, Julieann's first non-fiction book, 'Setting the Truth Free: The Inside Story of the Bloody Sunday Justice Campaign' (Liberties Press, Dublin) won the 2013 Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize. The book was launched by legendary folk singer Christy Moore in Derry, and by eminent human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce in London. As well as this, Julieann also took on the role of families' press officer ahead of the publication of Lord Saville's Report of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry in 2010. With the Unheard Voices project, she compiled and edited the collection, 'Beyond the Silence: Women's Unheard Voices from the Troubles' (Guildhall Press,2016). This led to the commission of an essay entitled, 'Rewriting History', for New Island's anthology, 'Female Lines: New Writing from Northern Ireland' (2017) Julieann later worked extensively with the Museum of Free Derry to generate and develop the oral history strand of their National Civil Rights Archive. She is now a PhD Researcher at Ulster University exploring the collective and individual impact of storytelling across the north of Ireland. Her latest book, titled "On Bloody Sunday," is the first ever complete oral history of one of the worst episodes in modern Irish history. "An evening with".... is a new acoustic singer songwriter night at the Word of Mouth Cafe in Ibiza. It's an opportunity for artists to share their music in a very real and raw, rustic environment on the island and in this episode, we caught up with swissSinger songwrite Ishantu who performed there at the end of October. Denise moved to ibiza at the start of last year when the world went slightly sideways and she tells Jo Youle all about the transition from her home to what she thought would be a free place to be, with a slight diversion which led her to meet Word of Mouth founder, Harry. It also gave her time and space to create her new record, which is coming out soon. Pop to her website to hear more: https://www.ishantu.com/

How are islands formed? For many islands their formation may take thousands of years, but some can pop out of nowhere quite suddenly. Like an island off the coast of Japan: after the volcanic eruption a new piece of land appeared. It's around one kilometer in diameter but you can't visit it - let's find out why. Islands are usually associated with sand, beaches, vacation and relaxation. But what if I tell you there're some islands on our planet you'd never wanna visit? For example, an island full of venomous snakes... or an island with creepy dolls hiding in the trees. There's even an island that only a few people get the permission to visit. At the age of 20, three months after meeting James Joyce, Nora Barnacle left everything she knew behind to share the adventure of a lifetime with him. She was a maid in a Dublin hotel when they met, and he was a clever and ambitious young man who wanted to be a writer. In 1904, they shipped out for mainland Europe, at times living a hand-to-mouth existence, at other times eating in the best restaurants. But through it all, Nora stuck by Joyce, who made her his muse and immortalised her as Molly Bloom in Ulysses. Nuala O’Connor, who brings Nora vividly to life in her novel of the same name, discusses the famous literary couple. Nora: A Love Story of Nora Barnacle and James Joyce by Nuala O’Connor is published by New Island: https://www.newisland.ie/fiction/nora Produced and presented by Martina Devlin

My guest this week is Gove Depuy, sustainability consultant, community-based planner, project leader and an advocate for bio mimicry. What are we talking about? Islands, and the growing idea that islands might serve as learning ecosystems for new ways of communing with the Earth we inhabit. It’s not an entirely new idea. In 1962, legendary author Aldous Huxley, wrote and published the book Island, as a utopian companion to his better known and more dystopian novel, Brave New World. Inspired by time spent in Bali, Huxley described a people living in harmony with nature. Today there’s a lot more traffic and a concerning amount of trash and plastic, but it’s still Bali – an island where animism and Hinduism blend to create a unique pact between humans in rhythm with the environment. I sat with Gove by the banks of one of Bali’s many picture-perfect rivers, adjacent to the Five Elements Retreat. It proved the perfect setting to talk about life in Bali, community-based projects, and ultimately, the promise of islands as a petri dish for exploring new, potentially more sustainable ways of living in the world. Amidst the thick, verdant jungle, cascading waterfalls and buzzing birds and insects, it’s hard to imagine we face a climate crisis of epic proportions. Yet, we do.

It's the first TPOE show of 2017! Dubbed the best new writer in the country by the Irish Times, Oisin Fagan talks about his apocalyptic story collection Hostages (released by New Island), hot soup in the school canteen, love stories vs short stories, his creative process and what exactly it feels like to be the hottest new writer around. Thanks for listening, liking, sharing and subscribing - and thanks to Steve McEvoy as always for producing the show.
"A heavy cloud of tear gas hung over a Tahrir Square in revolt. Buckling under the pressure of thousands of protestors, the epicentre of the Egyptian revolution was unleashing a roar of resistance into the Cairo night. Against this backdrop of chaos and the sonic onslaught of revolution, one of my companions and I conducted a halting conversation about local football." In Episode Twenty Eight, we look back at David Lynch's 'Ultra Violence' from Issue Four. Ultras have put aside their differences and united for the greater good in Cairo, but to what extent are they generals or just foot soldiers of the revolution? After the horrors of the Port Said stadium disaster, in which 70 Al-Ahly fans died at the hands of Al-Masry fans (or instruments of the state - it's disputed), the role that the Cairene clubs' ultras played in the downfall of the Mubarak regime, and the 'second revolution' is much analysed. David Lynch is an award winning journalist and author currently based in Cairo. His second book is 'A Divided Paradise: An Irishman in the Holy Land' (New Island). www.davidlynchwriter.com If you have any feedback comments or suggestions email podcast@theblizzard.co.uk or find us on Twitter @blzzrd. Issue Four, like all issues of The Blizzard, is available on a pay-what-you-like basis from www.theblizzard.co.uk. Digital downloads cost as little as 1p each (RRP £3), while print versions are available from £6 + postage (RRP £12). You can also find us on the Kindle and Google Play stores.

It's business as usual with the latest episode of the Vookcast which returns to the traditional format with special guest, Troy, the staffer who does our weekly eShop updates. The usual team and our esteemed guest go through all the latest and most notable news of the past few weeks, offering their insights on the most recent classifications and announcements for new games on the eShop and Virtual Console, along with the latest updates to several of Nintendo's key digital titles.Moving to a more community focus, the team discusses Nintendo's presence at the Game Developers Conference this year, as well as Nintendo Australia's efforts not only to bring the Mario Kart 8 collector's edition to Australia, but also to finally establish a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. Bad news, as always, is discussed too with Nintendo closing select online services and the whole Wii U WATCH_DOGS debacle now that it's been given a release date.Of course, we'd be wrong to forget to mention the latest releases - and the team talks about their thoughts on the rather dividing Yoshi's Island sequel, Yoshi's New Island as well as the quietly released Pokemon Link: Battle! for the eShop. Lars er syk, men the LOL must go on. Musikk i sendingen: Åpning: Ennio Morricone & Joan Baez - Here's to You (fra Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes) Pause: Final Fantasy X Seymour Battle - Kplekraft (fra SQ Chips 2-albumet) Avslutning: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Forest Haven
