Today I have the honor and the pleasure to speak once again with celebrated poet and physician, Fady Joudah. The last time Fady was on the podcast was in November, 2023, shortly after the outbreak of war in Gaza. At that point we spoke about the impossibility of, even then, quantifying the genocide. Today we focus on the politics of language—in particular, the distinction Fady Joudah makes between Palestine in English, and Palestine in Arabic. We speak too of the need for and limitations of solidarity, and finish with a reading and discussion of one of Fady Joudah's most remarkable and stunning poems, “Truth is Never Finished.” Fady Joudah is a Palestinian American physician, poet, and translator. He was born in Austin, Texas, and grew up in Libya and Saudi Arabia. He was educated at the University of Georgia, the Medical College of Georgia, and the University of Texas Health Sciences in Houston. In 2002 and 2005 he worked with Doctors Without Borders in Zambia and Sudan, respectively.Joudah's debut collection of poetry, The Earth in the Attic (2008), won the 2007 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, chosen by Louise Glück. Joudah followed his second book of poetry, Alight (2013) with Textu (2014), a collection of poems written on a cell phone wherein each piece is exactly 160 characters long. His fourth collection is Footnotes in the Order of Disappearance (2018). In 2014, Joudah was a Guggenheim Fellow in poetry. As critic Charles Bainbridge observed in a 2008 Guardian review of The Earth in the Attic, “Joudah's poetry thrives on dramatic shifts in perspective, on continually challenging received notions.”Joudah translated several collections of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish's work in The Butterfly's Burden (2006), which won the Banipal prize from the UK and was a finalist for the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation; and in If I Were Another, which won a PEN USA award in 2010. His translation of Ghassan Zaqtan's Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me (2012) won the Griffin International Poetry Prize in 2013. His other translations include Amjad Nasser's Petra: The Concealed Rose and A Map of Signs and Scents.Joudah lives with his family in Houston, where he works as a physician of internal medicine.

A guide to creating miracles in your own life through the power of thought. The Miracle Club, Amazon. Author, Mitch Horowitz. Following the path of Neville Goddard, Mitch says the key is to be 'exquisitely clear, passionate and forthright about your goals.' [I clearly had quite the caffeine buzz that morning! He was a very good sport and played along.] We cover ground way beyond the stuff mentioned in the book. I credit news headlines and his book notes. Topics: UFOs, Bigfoot, my Grandma's manifesting advice, and a memorable H.S. yearbook quote from Mitch's friend, Kenny.] Endorsement: “As part of my scientific work, I study the relationship between mind and matter under strictly controlled laboratory conditions. I've found that those who laugh the loudest about the ‘power of affirmations' will often ask me, but only after drinking a few beers and in hushed tones, ‘Seriously, do thoughts really influence reality?' I respond by saying that based on the results of hundreds of published scientific experiments, it appears that yes, they really do. But that's not what they want to know. They're asking if their thoughts affect their reality in their everyday lives. To answer that question, there's only one way to find out--try it yourself. For the clearest and most eminently rational description of exactly how to test the power of your thoughts, there is simply no better choice than Mitch Horowitz's The Miracle Club.” ― Dean Radin, Ph.D., author of Real Magic Reference: YouTube presentation with Mitch focusing on Neville. Today we speak with Palestinian American poet and physician Fady Joudah. We are recording this interview on Thursday, November 2, 2023, as the State of Israel expands its brutal and illegal collective punishment of Palestinians in Gaza—an act of genocidal ethnic cleansing. Health authorities in Gaza report more than nine thousand deaths in a population where 60 percent are under the age of 18. The United Nations General Assembly has just overwhelmingly passed a resolution demanding the “protection of civilians and [the] upholding [of] legal and humanitarian obligations.” The Assembly, also demanded that all parties “immediately and fully comply” with obligations under international humanitarian and human rights laws, “particularly in regard to the protection of civilians and civilian objects.”Fady Joudah's poetry has always addressed the situation of the Palestinians in Israel, in the Occupied Territories, and in diaspora, managing somehow to capture both the political and the personal, and above all the courage and humanity of the Palestinian people. We speak in particular about his recent LitHub piece, “A Palestinian Meditation in a Time of Annihilation: Thirteen Maqams for an Afterlife.” We are honored that he made time in this period of crisis to speak with us.Fady Joudah is a Palestinian American physician, poet, and translator. Sam Harris joins the Know Thyself Podcast today for a deep dive into consciousness, free will, and artificial intelligence. He explains the illusory nature of self, our daily psychosis, and why it's essential to wake up from the 'dream' of our thoughts. Sam shares how the practice of meditation can help set us free, and how to break the spell of negative emotions. He also dives deep on the pitfalls of the spiritual path, explaining the drawbacks of non-dual thinking, emptiness in Buddhism, and why some Gurus misbehave. Sam gives a thorough explanation into his present thesis on solving the hard problem of consciousness, explains how the concept of free will can be limiting with understanding psychopaths, and if he believes that artificial intelligence will one day become conscious. https://www.wakingup.com/knowthyself for free 30 days of Waking Up App ___________ Timecodes: 0:00 Intro 2:41 The Illusion of Self and the Process of Suffering 11:08 Our daily psychosis - Identification with thought 16:35 The Transitory Nature of Thought and the Benefits of Meditation 27:14 When ego is useful, and when to let go 32:40 Breaking the Spell of Negative Emotions 35:19 Understanding Impermanence and its Relation to Suffering 43:31 The concept of "Emptiness" in Buddhism 56:32 Pitfalls of the ‘goal' of enlightenment 59:11 The Duality of the Spiritual Path 1:12:15 The Illusion of Seeking and False Beliefs in Meditation Practice 1:14:58 How non-dual teachings got twisted 1:17:31 Waking up vs embodiment 1:25:21 Why spiritual teachers misbehave 1:30:57 Sam's Personal Pivotal Moments in the Journey of Self Inquiry 1:44:46 The hard problem of consciousness 2:09:24 Consciousness and Intelligence in AGI 2:17:42 Do we really have Free will? 2:29:57 Why Gratitude & Reason Heals Us 2:40:02 Conclusion ___________ Sam Harris is the author of five New York Times best sellers. What's in a game? Specifically, the MLB game played on May 6, 2000, between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Boston Red Sox which featured a pitchers' duel with Pedro Martinez and Steve Trachsel. We answer that question as we speak with Bob Ryan, Bill Chuck, and Steve Trachsel. Not to be outdone, the second half of the show features an interview with The Grill Dads which will make you laugh and want to cook, all at the same time. Bob Ryan was a spectator at the game and it is his scorecard which appears in the book he co-authored with Bill Chuck, In Scoring Position: 40 Years of a Baseball Love Affair, that sparked the idea of a discussion on this particularly incredible game. Ryan is a member of five Halls of Fame for his sportswriting. In addition, he is a recipient of the Associated Press sports editor's Red Smith Award "For Extended Meritorious Labor in the Art of Sports Journalism," and the PEN Award "For Literary Excellence in Sportswriting." He has also been featured on various ESPN programs for over three decades, including, the current show, Around the Horn. Bill Chuck recently joined us on episode 139 to discuss his latest book, In Scoring Position: 40 Years Of A Baseball Love Affair, which he co-authored with Bob Ryan. That is 139 episodes too late as we wish we had known Bill when we first started the show, almost five years ago. Bill is a baseball writer and researcher and has a weekly column in the Chicago Sun-Times. He feels lucky to have found us, but that feeling goes both ways, as we are so fortunate to have him on again and will have him back as many times as he will say yes. Bill knows baseball and loves the game. Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years. Primarily known for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, it is the May 6, 2000 game he played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park which we discuss. In that game, Trachsel was masterful as he struck out 11 batters in a complete game 1-0 gem; outdueling future Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez who K'd 17 hitters. Steve was a previous guest on episode 127 and discussed his remarkable baseball career, which included the ability to remain on the field and give his teams well-pitched innings, usually throwing more than 200 per year. He takes us into the game as we get to see it played from his perspective. This is a rare treat that was not lost on us or either of our guests, Bob and Bill. Ryan Fey and Mark Anderson are known as The Grill Dads. After winning Guy's Big Project, hosted by Guy Fieri they starred in the prime-time shows, The Grill Dads and Comfort Food Tour on the Food Network. They have also appeared on Beat Bobby Flay, The Wendy Williams Show, The Today Show, and the Howard Stern Wrap-Up Show. Their latest project is the incredibly funny cookbook, The Best Grilling Cookbook Ever Written By Two Idiots. The book has recipes that will expand your grilling repertoire while making food you will thoroughly enjoy. Fey and Mark are two best friends who are both from the world of advertising and love to cook. It is that friendship, love of cooking, creativity, and excellent senses of humor that are making The Grill Dads a brand you will want to know and this cookbook one you will want to own. We recommend you go to BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and Magnechef, https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, and Cutting Edge Firewood, https://www.cuttingedgefirewood.com/ for high-quality firewood and cooking wood. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you. This episode of Blúiríní Béaloidis was recorded in the beautiful surrounds of the Museum of Literature Ireland, in the historic UCD Newman House on St Stephen's Green in the heart of Dublin - and, I might add - for the first time, in front of a live studio audience. This was a great pleasure for me personally, so thanks to Ian, Benedict, Katie and Simon at MoLI for their kindness and hospitality in having us along. This aim of this podcast is to present listeners with the richness, artistry and depth of vision to be found in our folk traditions, and to this end, each episode to date has taken a singular fragment of that tradition as its primary focus; holy wells, sacred trees, rites of passage, calendar observances, the house, and so on. This format, while useful for our purposes, is necessarily somewhat artificial as an approach, for in our own lives, tradition rarely compartmentalises itself so neatly, instead manifesting as a tapestry of many threads, and a chorus of many voices which serve to keep to the past present. For this episode however, instead of focusing on one aspect of tradition, we for the first time dedicate our explorations to one individual; Mairéad ‘Peig' Sayers who, by her artistry and mastery as a storyteller in the oral tradition, skilfully managed to express the ‘wisdom of the many in the wit of the few', and yet whose printed autobiographies, as Irene Lucchitti notes in an article in Folklore and Modern Irish writing: ‘experienced a decline in reputation, suffering critical disdain and schoolyard ridicule in equal measure'. Now, nearly sixty-five years after her death, we hope to provide a platform through which her tales might find a new audience, one which, it is hoped, may find in her a source of inspiration and insight. It is a pleasure then, to announce that quite apart from this podcast, our friends and colleagues at MoLI, having worked in collaboration with ourselves at the NFC, will host a nine month exhibition on Peig Sayers called 'Thar Bealach Isteach' / 'Into the Island', on the Blasket Island storytelling tradition, and the context in which priceless fieldwork collections of oral literature held today in the archives of the National Folklore Collection at UCD, were recorded from that community by the Irish Folklore Commission. With me to explore Peig's stories for this episode, I am hugely honoured to have been joined by Dr. Pádraig Ó Héalaí and Dr. Éilís Ní Dhuibhne. Pádraig is a retired Senior Lecturer in Modern Irish at NUI, Galway. His area of specialisation is Irish folklore and he has published on many aspects of this topic, including religious tradition, Blasket heritage and beliefs and practices associated with the supernatural. He is a former editor of the journal Béaloideas and with Bo Almqvist, he edited with Peig Sayers: Labharfad le Cách / I Will Speak To You All and Níl Deireadh Ráite (both of which were recently republished by New Island). Recently, he edited An Blascaod Trí Fhuinneog na Scoile (2015), a young teacher's account of her experience of life on the Great Blasket when it was still home to a vibrant community. Éilís Ní Dhuibhne was born in Dublin. Author of more than thirty books, her works include The Dancers Dancing, The Shelter of Neighbours, Cailíní Beaga Ghleann na mBláth and Hurlamaboc, among others. Her most recent books are Twelve Thousand Days: A Memoir, Little Red and Other Stories (Blackstaff 2020), and Look! It's a Woman Writer; Irish Literary Feminisms 1970-2020 (ed.) (Arlen House, 2021) As well as being a writer, she is a folklore scholar and has written extensively on aspects of traditional narrative. She has been the recipient of many literary awards, most recently the Pen Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Irish Literature. In Autumn 2020 she held the Burns Scholarship at Boston College. She is a member of Aosdána, and President of the Folklore of Ireland Society.
My guest in this episode is Mitch Horowitz, a PEN Award-winning historian considered an expert of alternative spirituality, he's also known widely as the voice of esoterica ideas. Mitch and I first met when a few years ago I was producing a TV series called Open Minds. Mitch was a guest on the show and at the time he was coming on to discuss his book Occult America. Since then he's written at least 20 more books! And has two news ones coming out this year - Day Dream Believer out this July, and Uncertain Places available in October. We chat about those books plus…Mitches film The Kybalion, which breaks down the 7 Hermetic principals. This episode is a thought-provoking discussion of the spiritual, the occult, the magickal, and the extra-sensory world with mentions of many, many people from Neville Goddard, a continued influence on Mitch as well as Émile Coué and, of all people, The Amazing Randi. All the links to everything we talk about in this episode from books to people and more about Mitch his books and work, can be found at TheConsciousDiva.com episode 41. Highlights from this episode include: - Kybalion and the seven Hermetic principals. - Where did the Hermetic tradition and experience evolve from (Greek and Egyptian traditions). I ask Mitch why the Indus Valley, an almost equally ancient civilization and the Vedic tradition are not considered a part of the Hermetic tradition? - How Mitches journey through his interests as a Seeker lead him to become a wisdom school educator of transformation and manifestation. - Who is Neville Goddard and how/why does Mitch continue to be influenced by him? And we chat about Neville's interesting childhood influences growing up in Barbados. - Mitch shares insights from his two new books: Dream Believer out in July and, Uncertain Places, available in October 2022. - Mitch shares his own personal practice with influences from Émile Coué, the French mind theorist. - And we rant on about The Amazing Randi (James Randi), the stage magician and skeptic of the paranormal and ESP and the content of the book by Rhonda Byrne, The Secret. - Plus so much more! Join host Piers Kaniuka and researcher and author Dr. James Ryan as they discuss Mitch Horowitz's book Occult America: The Secret History of How Mysticism Shaped Our Nation (Bantam, Sept 2009). This episode was recorded on September 23, 2020.As the Washington Post wrote about author Mitch Horowitz he "treats esoteric ideas & movements with an even-handed intellectual studiousness". He is the editor-in-chief of Tarcher/Penguin and is a PEN Award-winning historian that has been censored in China. Visit him online at www.MitchHorowitz.com and buy his book here.About the book:It touched lives as disparate as those of Frederick Douglass, Franklin Roosevelt, and Mary Todd Lincoln—who once convinced her husband, Abe, to host a séance in the White House. Americans all, they were among the famous figures whose paths intertwined with the mystical and esoteric movement broadly known as the occult. Brought over from the Old World and spread throughout the New by some of the most obscure but gifted men and women of early U.S. history, this “hidden wisdom” transformed the spiritual life of the still-young nation and, through it, much of the Western world.Yet the story of the American occult has remained largely untold. Now a leading writer on the subject of alternative spirituality brings it out of the shadows. Here is a rich, fascinating, and colorful history of a religious revolution and an epic of offbeat history. From the meaning of the symbols on the one-dollar bill to the origins of the Ouija board, Occult America briskly sweeps from the nation's earliest days to the birth of the New Age era and traces many people and episodes, including:•The spirit medium who became America's first female religious leader in 1776 •The supernatural passions that marked the career of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith •The rural Sunday-school teacher whose clairvoyant visions instigated the dawn of the New Age •The prominence of mind-power mysticism in the black-nationalist politics of Marcus Garvey•The Idaho druggist whose mail-order mystical religion ranked as the eighth-largest faith in the world during the Great Depression Resistance Recovery (RR) is reimagining addiction, recovery, and community in the 21st century. “I've always considered myself a believing historian and, in fact, most historians of religion are actually believing historians. Very frequently they emerge from the congregations that they're writing about, whether new religious movements or traditional religions, this is true of Kabbalistic scholar Gershom Scholem, it's true of people who have written probably the most important biographies of more recent religious figures like Mary Baker Eddy or Joseph Smith, a Mormon prophet. Although, historians don't frequently acknowledge being believing historians because they feel that it might seem to compromise their capacity for critical judgement, but my impression is different. My impression is that being in very direct proximity to the nature of the philosophical, religious, ethical, therapeutic movements that you're writing about can heighten your critical acumen.”Mitch Horowitz is a historian of alternative spirituality and one of today's most literate voices of esoterica, mysticism, and the occult.
