Francesca Rudkin: On assistant coach Leon MacDonald leaving the All Black's group

Well, that was a bit of a shock wasn't it. It seems everyone was a bit taken aback to hear that assistant coach Leon MacDonald would be leaving the All Black's group. Less that 24 hours out from the All Blacks heading to South Africa for two Rugby Championship tests, New Zealand rugby confirmed MacDonald would not continue in the role. Fronting the media, head coach Scott Razor Robertson outlined the reasons why the decision has been made. He said there were differences around the philosophy on rugby, and how it's played, and they didn't quite click in different aspects. Razor added the went through a process, and got to this point, and they believed that Macdonald stepping away was the best thing for the All Black group. Sounds pretty straight forward right – and refreshing to hear what sounds like a legitimate reason rather than a manufactured one. It just didn't work. People have been surprised by MacDonalds departure because they two have known each other for around 27 years. They have played and worked together before, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be plain sailing – especially when you step up into the biggest, most intense job in New Zealand rugby. John Kirwan had this to say about the decision on the Mike Hosking Breakfast this morning ....Incredible courage, I believe, on behalf of both of them if it's not working out, because the status quo would be probably stay there, finish the season. But you know for them to move on this quickly, I think it's the best thing for the team. He's right. Macdonald is a very good coach, one we will probably lose to an overseas team now – but it takes courage to acknowledge if a situation isn't working, and integrity to the right thing for yourself and the team. Of course we're still keen to try and distil down what has happened here. The simple reason why this relationship hasn't worked might just come down to the fact there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Do the All Blacks need 6 coaches? Graham Henry and Steven Hansen were able to run the All blacks successfully on 3 coaches. There had been rumours that players were dealing with too many voices – this simplifies that somewhat. Another suggestion is that it's an adjustment to go from Head Coach to assistant coach. Coaches end up tripping over each other, there are mixed messages, or a coach is left feeling maligned. But regardless of the intricacies of why they have come to this decision – it's hard not to be impressed by it. Good on them for not letting it fester. Good on them for being open and honest about the fact it didn't work. It sounds like the two have departed on decent terms, and now it's time to move on. Will it have an impact on the All Blacks? I doubt it. They have dealt with much more difficult HR issues in the past, and I imagine they will be fully focused on facing South Africa.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sir John Kirwan: All Blacks Great on the shock exit of Assistant Coach Leon MacDonald

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

All Blacks great Sir John Kirwan says Leon MacDonald's coaching future will have to be overseas after exiting as the All Blacks assistant coach yesterday.  In a shock move, New Zealand Rugby announced MacDonald was stepping down from the role under All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson five tests into the season, and just a week out from their Rugby Championship test against South Africa.  “It's unbelievable...incredible courage I believe on behalf of both of them,” Kirwan told the Mike Hosking Breakfast on Newstalk ZB.  “If it's not working out because the status quo would be probably stay there, finish the season. But for them to move on this quicker, I think it's the best thing for the team.”  ‘Some people just can't be assistants'  Kirwan said there were probably two main reasons for MacDonald to walk away from the role.  “Probably a lack of philosophy around how they are attacking. Once you don't agree on how they're going to attack it's pretty hard to mend,” he told Hosking.  “And the second thing is, I think some people just can't be assistants as well. Leon's been a head coach now for a while, and so it's hard to sometimes go back to being assistant.  Regardless of the timing of his exit, MacDonald will now be highly sought after by any side in need of a coach.  At Super Rugby level, MacDonald led the Blues in 69 games during his four-year tenure, for 45 wins, 23 defeats and a draw.  The Herald understands MacDonald turned down an approach from Scotland in order to sign on with Robertson and the All Blacks.  “I think he'd probably have to go offshore, now. There's no jobs left in New Zealand,” Kirwan added.  The All Blacks face the Springboks at Ellis Park next Sunday in their first meeting since the Rugby World Cup final. That is followed by a second test a week later in Cape Town. Kirwan said losing a coach midseason shouldn't be a major disruption for the players.  “I don't think the players will be affected too much. I think they'll just carry on. I don't think he's going to be replaced, so it'll be one less voice.  “He's [Robertson's] got enough people in there to fill the gap. I just think they'll carry on.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Zealand's rugby provinces have been warned by the professional players association to brace for a civil war if they vote to approve their own governance change proposal at next week's special general meeting.   In an explosive move, the New Zealand Rugby Players' Association (NZRPA) has told the unions it is ready to break away to form a new and separate entity to manage the professional game.  The NZRPA says that if the provinces vote in favour of what is known as Proposal 2 – a new governance structure that the provinces have developed themselves and one that differs significantly to an alternative blueprint that aligns with the findings of an independent review – it will withdraw, via its collective employment agreement, the right for New Zealand Rugby (NZR) to govern the game.  It leaves rugby in an even more uncomfortable position than before, with the game to be divided even further if the NZRPA decides it will no longer allow its players' image rights to be used by NZR.  Former All Black Sir John Kirwan told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that the situation should never have reached this point and that he fears a repeat of the early days of professionalism, where players were split between signing up for official and rebel financial offers.  “That will happen again, there will be an absolute split. That's why I don't think threatening to leave is the right answer. I understand Rob's [Nichol, chair of NZRPA] frustration because he has seen this governance review done and now they're trying to change it, I understand that frustration,” Kirwan said.  NZRPA boss Rob Nichol. Photo / Dean Purcell  He said that while rugby faces pressure for participation from other codes like football, there should be a united front among the leaders of the game rather than division.  Kirwan told Hosking that those with the power to make change are digging in their heels and refusing to relinquish power, despite a review that cost millions telling them that was what was best for rugby.  “Some of these chairmen, they're just holding the game a wee bit to ransom. Some of these guys that are fighting, their unions lost $800,000 to a million dollars last year. It's a broken system at the moment, we need to get back to what's best for our game,” he said.  “You spent millions of dollars on a governance review, that governance review's come out and now you're trying to change it. So the problem is power.  “The interesting thing for the public is the NPC sides really at the end of the day have a vote, all of them, that can change the direction of the game. What we're trying to do is speed that up, what the governance review said is we need to have a look at our game, we need to change it we need a different structure.”  The 63-time All Black said he fears the New Zealand rugby-loving public are growing weary of the continued debate and that it will drive fans away from the game.  “The trouble is, with me, I don't like threats of people leaving and that sort of stuff but our game continues to be split. The saddest thing for me is people don't give a s*** any more, because they're just sick of it.  “Rather than having an opinion and being passionate about it, if you just stop caring that's when our game is in real danger.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Baton Rouge: Out to Lunch

Much as we love to tout our fun loving lifestyle in south Louisiana, we have some of the worst health outcomes in the country – including the highest rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and infant mortality. On this edition of Out to Lunch, Jim Engster sits in for Stephanie and is joined by two lunch guests who both head up institutions in Baton Rouge's growing Health District. Beyond providing reactive medical care to these already existing health issues, John Kirwan, Rene Ragas and their respective institutions are focused on what causes these diseases in the first place and how to proactively keep our population healthier long term.   John Kirwan is Executive Director of Pennington Biomedical Research Center here in Baton Rouge, which is renowned the world over for its focus on diabetes and obesity. John himself is internationally renowned as an expert in diabetes and nutrition science with more than 30 years of research and teaching and a specialty in type 2 diabetes and how to potenitally cure it. John came to the center in 2018 from the famed Cleveland Clinic, and in the years since has generated more than $50M in research funding and spearheaded the opening of Pennington's obesity treatment center. John was a guest on Out to Lunch  back in the pandemic era, when we were meeting on zoom. A lot has happened since then and it is great to see John in person.  Rene Ragas is President and CEO of Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge, the largest birthing hospital in the state. Since opening in 1968, Woman's has delivered nearly 400,000 babies and is reocngized for its Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, expertise in mammography and breast and cancer care. What's perhaps less well known is the hospital's research capabilities, especially in cervical cancer, where Woman's has been a pioneer since the implementation of pap screening test used to detect this type of cancer. Rene joined the hospital in 2022. He has more than two decades of experience as a healthcare executive, most recently as north shore market president for the FMOL health system. During his time as an All Black, the conversation around mental health was very different to what it is today and JK was, at least in part, a reason that our understanding of mental health has shifted. In this chat we speak about what the early days of being an All Black were like; not much pay and the need for a second job! He played 63 test matches for the All Blacks from 1984 to 1994 and was part of the winning 1987 Rugby World Cup team. He also played for the Warriors and had success as a rugby coach, including on the international stage with Italy and Japan. Fresh from hanging up the whistle after last month's Rugby World Cup final, referee Wayne Barnes detailed the trials and tribulations of officiating at a professional level. In his new autobiography 'Throwing the Book', Barnes took aim at former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry and his response to the All Blacks' upset loss to France in 2007. Former All Black Sir John Kirwan says it's likely Barnes is exaggerating his points to generate interest in the book. "I know Wayne, I know his wife- he's a family man. That's a bit of an exaggeration, he's probably got to sell books. " LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At the 1987 Rugby World Cup, All-Blacks legend John Kirwan scored a length of the field try & in turn, he inspired a generation of future all-blacks & rugby greats to follow their own dreams. On the surface, he was the fit & strapping superstar that every young man wanted to be, but below the surface, he was fighting the toughest battle of his life: anxiety & depression. JK talks of his fear for speaking out at that troubling time. The fear that his career would be taken from him, that he would be labelled insane. It all came to a head in August, 1991, when on tour with the AB's in Argentina, he wanted to jump out of a 10-story hotel window. The kind words of a team mate saved JK's life that night. Fast forward several years and JK is now widely recognised as one of ‘the faces' of depression and anxiety in New Zealand. In 2012, he was knighted for his services to mental health, an honour he strives to live up to every day. He's the founder of several mental wellbeing organisations including the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, Mitey, and most recently, Groov, a workplace mental wellbeing platform. He's also the author of All Blacks Don't Cry: A Story of Hope and Stand By Me: Helping Your Teen Through Tough Times. He is also an incredibly talented keynote speaker, coach & commentator. NZR seeks to make changes to provincial rugby, following chief Mark Robinson claiming the current model isn't 'fit for purpose'. The NPC was launched two weeks ago with minimal promotion or fanfare, and interest in the sport has been sparse. Former All Black Sir John Kirwan agrees with this assessment, and claims the NPC needs to be aligned closer to Super Rugby. "They play a curtain-raiser, they extend the squads and it all becomes part of the high performance. You'd have some semi-professional people and professionals." "Sir John Kirwan": Sir John Kirwan is a former Rugby legend in New Zealand, played for the All Blacks for ten years (1984-1994) before becoming a coach himself. He had the honors of coaching Italy & Japan national teams and learned a lot throughout that period. John struggled with depression as a player but didn't talk about it much before almost deciding to jump out of a window in Argentina. That's where his healing journey started and until this day he became the biggest advocate for mental health in New Zealand. He's the author of two books (All Blacks Don't Cry & Stand By Me) and helped establish a foundation named "Mitey" that helps young children to understand and deal with Mental Health. He also is the co-founder of 'Groov', which is a mental wellbeing platform to help deal with stress and anxiety at the workplace. "JK" had an open discussion today about his journey and his advocacy for this illness. He shared his thoughts on a 'daily mental health plan' and the six pillars of mental health, broke down some parts of it as well as what it means to create a 'to done list'! Apart from that, we also talked about mental health in athletes and coaches, how he approached his players when he saw them struggle and how his experience in Japan helped him understand a different way of doing and explaining things to his players.
