What happens when you rescue a forgotten studio that once shaped American music history - and bring it roaring back to life?This week, I sat down with Teresa Knox, the powerhouse entrepreneur and preservationist behind the rebirth of The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma - the legendary home of Leon Russell, the early Shelter Records family, and the roots of what became known as the Tulsa Sound. Teresa shares the entire arc of this wild journey: from collecting Leon Russell Slurpee cups as an 8-year-old kid, to buying the abandoned church sight unseen, to rebuilding it from the ground up and restoring it as a world-class studio, museum, archive, and engineering school. We talk about the stunning history embedded in the building - the 1915 hand-built sanctuary, the 1972 Leon-era renovations, and what it really takes to preserve a place where so many iconic recordings were born.We dig deep into the music: Leon's time in the Wrecking Crew, his explosion after Mad Dogs & Englishmen, recording with George Harrison at the Concert for Bangladesh, and his early influence on players like Elton John and Glen Campbell. Teresa shares stories from the Shelter Records years - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers arriving as Mudcrutch, J.J. Love, lust, and heartbreak are the secret soundtrack of the LA canyons. In this episode of My Rock Moment we welcome Emmeline Summerton of Instagram's Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer of the New Topanga Times. Together we trace that soundtrack through eight songs — uncovering the romance, the messiness and the broken hearts behind the lyrics. We start with “Guinnevere,” David Crosby's mysterious song inspired by 3 women — Christine Hinton, Joni Mitchell, and the surprising third muse, “Delta Lady” — Leon Russell's ode to Rita Coolidge and the wild, studio-to-road romance that sent them straight into Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs tour. Then we move to the Mamas & the Papas' “Go Where You Wanna Go,” a sunny single born from the band's very messy affairs.    From there:  “Our House,” Graham Nash's tiny, perfect snapshot of life with Joni Mitchell in Laurel Canyon — ordinary moments made into a classic. I left you with a bit of a riddle last week as to today's topic and as you can see, we are discussing Rabies! This is an older virus (belonging to the genus of Lyssaviruses—named for the minor Greek goddess of rage and fury, Lyssa). We are focusing on the history, mythology, pathology and signs and symptoms of the disease as well as how the first rabies vaccine was developed back in 1885 and historical cures that were not effective and a little on the weird side. From stories of “Mad Dogs” to the use of “Madstones,” we are taking a walk through history on how rabies has been a formidable and fearsome enemy to humanity and wildlife alike. We will take a look at how the disease spreads and how long it may take for symptoms to show. Hopefully, for you they never do, because once symptoms show, it is nearly 100% fatal. Less than 20 people have survived rabies and we will talk over some of these cases as well. With the proper prophylactic vaccines we have now, even post exposure, it is nearly 100% preventable. We will go over what animals carry it and are affected by it and what to look for there. I will surely rant about not approaching wildlife in general if you are not experienced as a handler or whatever, because rabid or not some animals will not hesitate to defend themselves, their young, or their territory. Also, if you have any sort of encounter with an animal known to carry rabies, it is important to seek prophylactic treatment, bite or no bite. Today's guest is revelatory. I'm extremely happy to welcome author Joel Selvin to the podcast. He's written a book called Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon. The title tells it all. It's the story of one of the (if not THE) greatest drummers of all time and his mental health battle that ultimately ended in tragedy.  Joel masterfully tells the story from Jim's beginnings, how he started playing drums,to touring with The Everly Brothers immediately after graduating high school, and how he broke into the world of session musicians. He was a vital part of legendary tours like Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour and writing classic songs that are still played every day, like Derek & The Dominos' Layla. Jim had a gargantuan appetite for alcohol and drugs; both legal and illegal. And that is one possible reason that no one realized the truth behind his mental decline. He had been suffering with schizophrenia for a long time and had been successful in hiding the symptoms. But the voices in his head eventually began to rule his life with command hallucinations. They ended his professional career and eventually were the reason he murdered his mother.  Jim's entire professional career was a short 15 years. But his impact is still felt. After he was sent to prison, he was minimized and all but erased from music history.  But after Jim's passing in 2023, the pendulum has begun to swing the other way and Joel's book is leading the charge. He tells Jim's story honestly and sympathetically. Like Joel said, he wrote a few good lines but it's Jim's story. We had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick Davis over Zoom video!With Carolina When I Die, Davis reintroduces himself as a Southern storyteller and classic craftsman. It's a modern-day album steeped in the timeless sounds of his influences: the smooth soul of Ray Charles, the heartland folk-rock of Jackson Browne, the nuanced country of Lyle Lovett, and the big-band bombast of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Tying those sounds together is a versatile musician who, having already established himself as a hit songwriter for others, is rededicating himself to his own records. Carolina When I Die may be the fifth full-length release of Davis' catalog, but it marks a new beginning, too.Carolina When I Die nods to Davis' small-town roots in Camden, South Carolina, where he spent most of his adolescence. His father was a working musician who taught his son to appreciate the good stuff, from the Beatles to Van Morrison. When he was still young, Davis would attend his dad's shows and climb onstage for a song or two, laying the foundation for the career he'd launch as an adult. With "Carolina When I Die," the album's title track, he reflects on countless miles traveled since leaving that childhood home. "I've rambled all around this world, seen the Northern Lights / I have drank with kings and queens and señoritas of the night," he sings over a finger-plucked acoustic guitar. The song isn't just a travelogue; it's a love song for one's home, with Davis longing to go back to the place where it all began.If "Carolina When I Die" unfolds like Davis' own story, then "Six String Dreams" is the story of musicians everywhere. Written alongside Sadler Vaden — longtime guitarist for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit — and rooted in a 1970s-worthy soul groove, the song pays tribute to blue-collar troubadours who make their living beneath the stage lights. During the rest of Carolina When I Die, Davis gets funky on "L-O-V-E" (written with Randolph Randolph, who recorded his own version of the song on the Grammy-nominated album Got Soul), teams up with the late Guy Clark for "Wrong Side of the Tracks," and examines the colorblind friendship between two characters on the stunning "Black Jesus." Some songs make room for stacked layers of electric guitar, brass, organ, and vocal harmonies — a dense sound that Davis regularly recreates in a live setting with his 11-piece touring band, Patrick Davis & His Midnight Choir — while others are simple, stark, acoustic recordings that shine a light on Davis' own delivery. CMA blocks Activision Blizzard deal, FY23 Q3 earnings, Mad Dogs Hot Dogs Microsoft earnings Microsoft announced that it earned a net income of $18.3 billion on revenues of $52.9 billion for the quarter ending March 31. Those figures represent gains of 9 and 7 percent, respectively, year-over-year. Intelligent Cloud, the home of Azure and Server, was once again the software giant's biggest business, with $22.1 billion in revenues, up 16 percent YOY. Productivity and Business Processes, which houses Office, delivered $17.5 billion in revenues, up 11 percent YOY. Windows, Xbox, and Surface once again tripped over themselves, with $13.3 billion in revenues, down 9 percent. Analysis of Microsoft's F23Q3 Yet another AI theory: After years of 70 percent-ish growth in Azure revenues driving its stock price and market cap, Microsoft needed something exciting for Wall Street. (Azure grew "just" 27 percent in this quarter) Windows revenues from PC makers fell 28 percent in the quarter. Windows Commercial products and cloud services increased 14 percent YOY, "driven by strong renewal execution and an increase in agreements that carried higher in-period revenue recognition." Surface was a no-show: Devices revenues fell by 30 percent. Xbox: Xbox console sales and other hardware revenues fell 30 percent in the quarter while gaming revenue, overall, declined 4 percent and Xbox content and services revenue grew 3 percent. But revenue from Xbox subscriptions reached nearly $1 billion in the quarter. Teams: over 300 million MAUs. Microsoft 365: Office commercial revenue grew 13 percent in the quarter. Paid Office 365 commercial seats were up 11 percent YOY to 382 million. Office consumer revenues were up, sort of, by 1 percent, while the Microsoft 365 consumer user base grew 12 percent to 65.4 million.
