eDNA with Georgia Nester | The Deep Sea Podcast | Episode 59 “Exploration is about the place, adventurism is about the person, science is about the question” Professor Alan Jamieson In an episode recorded earlier than usual, which is to say not recorded late, and so perhaps recorded right on time?... we are talking about environmental DNA or eDNA. Thom is headed off to Norfolk Island, north of New Zealand, to characterize the unique life in the region and hopefully not be eaten by sharks. Alan's been up to secret things, organizing everyone's lives and, for a change, is recording this episode from the same country as the last one. In the news, Thom and Alan discuss a recent paper about the extent of ocean exploration, the valuable research it was based on, and the unfortunately defeatist tone. There is a lot left to do, but we have done so much! Also in the news: Bottom trawling releases not only organic carbon into the ocean but also pyrite, which reacts with oxygen in the water and reduces the oceans' ability to absorb carbon from the air. An art installation pairs a Sri Lankan artist with JAMSTEC and NuStar Technologies for a collection of steel cubes located 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) below the ocean close to the Marianas Trench. The cubes are housed in a seismic monitoring system designed for registering tectonic plate movements. And finally Al and Thom discuss gene mutation in deep-sea fish and a new paper that gives evidence to an old theory that some deep-sea fish are “ancient survivors,” from dinosaur times, while others are “new immigrants,” post mass extinction. For this month's interview, we speak with Dr. Georgia Nester, a colleague of Alan's from the University of Western Australia, about eDNA (Environmental DNA is any genetic material left behind by organisms in an environment). She talks about how several collection methods, eg.: Niskin bottles, sponges and paper filters, located on the deep-sea lander system, can retrieve different types of eDNA from the deep. Georgia also touches on how diel migrators can really mess with eDNA data, and larvae gave her a surprise when she kept getting hits from very deep-living fish in her surface samples. Georgia even used a water sample to locate surprise eDNA evidence of the Giant Squid in Australian waters, which Al takes as a chance to remind Thom of his Antarctic colossal squid failure. Alan talks about how valuable he thinks eDNA is, how it can give a great snapshot of what can't be seen on the footage or in the submersible, and how it might be able to narrow down species that are difficult to catch, like Bassozetus cusk eels. Save thousands on any new car (Australia-only): https://autoexpert.com.au/contactGet a great deal on home solar (or add a quality battery to your existing setup): https://autoexpert.com.au/solarIn this video:Polestar has just started offering battery state of health certificates on select used Polestar 2s being resold in its dealer network. Companies don't get up in the morning and randomly decide this kind of thing is a good idea. It has to be for a reason.According to them: "As part of the Polestar Pre-owned programme, in which select used cars re-enter the partner network, the certificate transparently shows customers the battery health and capacity of a used Polestar 2. Certifying the useable battery as a percentage, customers can purchase a pre-owned Polestar 2 with peace-of-mind that the car's battery is in optimal condition."The battery in a Polestar 2 is actually one of the few things that's proven quite robust so far, with very few owners complaining about range falling into the Marianas Trench. There have been plenty of other faults, but not the battery.Doing this is most probably because the rest of the car has proven to be such an unreliable, abject lemon. Like, don't mind the lemon - look at how healthy the battery is, dude. Again, according to them: "Since its launch in 2020, Polestar 2 has received over 20 over-the-air (OTA) software updates, allowing the car to continuously improve over time. For Polestar 2, OTA updates have led to efficiency gains, extending the car's range through battery management, new functionality with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as many loved apps including Waze and YouTube. With regularly scheduled software updates, Pre-owned customers can be assured they have the latest software features in their car."This is a very interesting way to put it. It's a totally true statement - as far as it goes - but not exactly a complete picture of the OTA reality. I'd argue that many - maybe most - of these OTAs are (often unsuccessful) attempts to fix something that should have been sorted in R&D, before deploying the vehicle publicly. So, battery health certificate or not, Polestar 2 is set to go down in the history books as one of the first enduring EV lemons. Cybertruck is on the podium, certainly, but Polestar 2 is up there, in the Lemon-Scented EV Sweepstakes.
We could have taken the low hanging fruit and talked about Marianas Trench (the place and the band) all episode, but we saved you all from that 10 hour dissertation, and instead covered the Saipan Island, which, holy cow is this place devastating. It's no wonder an island like this is going to be haunted. Honestly, we'd be surprised if someone didn't have their own story to tell, so let's see what the residents have to say. In the first half, inventor and researcher David Blume discussed the drive for regenerative agriculture, transforming agricultural waste into valuable products, and his advocacy for ethanol as a fuel alternative. Addressing the future of agriculture, he expressed concern about food production and population growth. We may not be able to produce enough food in 15 to 30 years, he cautioned, urging for improvements in agricultural practices. He critiqued the term "sustainable agriculture," explaining that it often has meant just don't let things get any worse. Instead, he argued for regenerative practices that enhance soil fertility through biological rather than chemical means, like turning crop waste back into the ground.Blume shared some of his innovative techniques as an alternative to pesticides, such as creating habitats for frogs to naturally control pests. "So those frogs eat all those bugs, if there's enough frogs, and then they poop them out all over your farm, fertilizing everything," he enthused. He also outlined his work in New Zealand, where he aims to mitigate agricultural runoff using cattails as biofilters. Regarding ethanol, he reported that Stellantis, the world's largest automotive brand, is investing billions to produce vehicles that can run on flex fuel with up to 100% alcohol, signaling a shift away from oil dependency. For more, check out his offer for a free e-book copy of "Alcohol Can Be a Gas!"----------In the latter half, video analyst and astronomer Marc Dantonio discussed the exciting developments at his nonprofit organization, Sky Tour Live Stream (STLS), as well as his study of unidentified submerged objects (USOs). At STLS, "We bring astronomy to the masses... we show them the universe live in real-time," he explained, adding that his organization planned to open a second observatory. Describing their sophisticated telescopes, he said one is a 10-inch telescope capable of gathering light 25 times faster than typical models. He also shared his passion for exploring nebulae, where life is believed to have begun. The interview touched on some of the strange phenomena Marc has observed through his telescopes, including something that moved in a circle over a 48-second period-- "a true unidentified object."Delving into the mystery of USOs, he theorized that ETs are utilizing our oceans for concealment. He emphasized, "We only know 16% of our oceans," and these vast unexplored depths could serve as an ideal hiding place for advanced civilizations. He suggested that these beings possess technology that allows them to navigate the ocean without harm, possibly through interdimensional travel. Dantonio recounted an intriguing incident involving the freighter Maru, where crew members observed disc-shaped crafts emerging from the depths near the Marianas Trench. "There have been hundreds and hundreds of USO events," he noted, as he shared his own experiences with the Navy, revealing that sonar operators often see unidentifiable fast-moving objects, leading to a protocol of "observe and report, do not engage." He also touched on how Kaluza Klein particles or gravitons (explored in theoretical physics) might explain interstellar travel via the idea of a hidden or fifth dimension, beyond space-time.

Hello Epic listeners! This week, we'd like to introduce you to another action-packed audio drama on the Realm network that we think you'll enjoy -- The Leviathan Chronicles! The Leviathan Chronicles | Season 1, Episode 1: Evil Undertow A highly advanced Chinese submarine, the Hei Ten Shi, is on a mysterious mission to deliver an otherworldly cargo to the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the Earth's ocean. The Chinese vessel suffers damage while maneuvering through the tight oceanic canyons. Because the vessel is now sinking rapidly, it enters a race against time to reach its destination, deliver its cargo and rise to the surface. But before it can release the cargo that is weighing it down, the Chinese vessel is intercepted by an American submarine, the USS Dakota, on a routine patrol to Pearl Harbor. The Chinese submarine dives to over 21,000 feet to avoid engagement. But before the Chinese can escape, the cargo "activates" sending out strange pulses of radiation that cause both the American and Chinese submarines to have massive system failures. As the Hei Ten Shi separates the main components of its ship, the Dakota fears an attack and launches its torpedoes destroying a large part of the Hei Ten Shi. One year later, a CIA operative named Whitt Roberts is called to meet with Jason Sterling. Sterling is part of the Blackdoor Group, a highly clandestine arm of the CIA that acts in complete autonomy from the rest of the US Government and its laws. Whitt has been called upon to investigate the disappearance of the Dakota, but Jason Sterling seems to know more than he is letting on. Whitt explains that a powerful signal was sent out from the Marianas Trench. But what is even more unusual is that the signal appears to have been answered from a source in outer space. Jason tells Whitt that he wants him to abandon his search for the Dakota and focus on a new target...in New York City. The St. John's Morning Show from CBC Radio Nfld. and Labrador (Highlights)
The quest to find an opening act for one Iceberg Alley show has come to an end. St. John's band NFRARED will be the opening act for Marianas Trench at the Iceberg Alley Performance Tent tonight. We spoke with members Oliver Healey, Matthew Aylward, and Ryan Murray.
In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian's Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair. Barry continually references Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp). Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.). Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,' ‘It's a “B” Movie,' ‘Cutting Edge,' and ‘Worthless,' all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we'll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian's dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks' work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle. Did you catch Barry's weekly Coriolis force joke? Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders. Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair. We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck. We once again plugged Matty C's multimedia project What Am I Making. We closed by playing Ian's new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”. Up next… A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco Ian also randomly selected our next Jukebox episode, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, submitted by Dinos Korominas. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 12, 2024. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. This week, we would like to introduce you to The Leviathan Chronicles, a podcast distributed by Realm. A highly advanced Chinese submarine, the Hei Ten Shi, is on a mysterious mission to deliver an otherworldly cargo to the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the Earth's ocean. Entrepreneurship is a very fun and rewarding journey. But just like anything else there are highs and lows to this journey. The problem with entrepreneurship is that some of the highs can be so high, that a low that would seem normal for an everyday employee might seem like the Marianas Trench to an entrepreneur.
Barry and Abigail discuss Astoria by Marianas Trench and sample Vernal Equinox, Rose City Sour, and Sang Rosé from Cascade Brewing in Beaverton, Oregon. If you are interested in some of the backstories behind these songs, we recommend you read through the Genius entries for this album! Josh Ramsay, the lead vocalist and songwriter of Marianas Trench, co-wrote and produced Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. This is referenced in the Marianas Trench song POP 101! Abigail first heard this album while traveling back from The Mowgli's concert in 2019. Listen to our episode on The Mowgli's, Where'd Your Civility Go? (The Mowgli's & Civil Society Brewing). Astoria (the song) reminded Abigail of both Jumpstarted by Jukebox the Ghost and Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings. Yesterday was written as a tribute to Footloose by Kenny Loggins Abigail believes the percussion in This Means War sounds like I Just Can't Wait to Be King from The Lion King soundtrack. In 2020, Harrison Biehl bought his first mountain bike and immediately put his mind in the track, progressively doing bigger and bigger rides. In summer 2022, he successfully completed his first “Everesting” mission - repeating the same climb until reaching 29,032 feet of elevation gain. As a fundraiser for TAMBA, Harrison tackled Stanford Rock trail on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe and completed the mission in under 24 hours. In the afterglow, tragedy struck when his close friend Joe Fazzio took his own life a week before Christmas. To honor Joe's life and bring awareness to mental health, Harrison partnered with High Fives Foundation and launched the Pedal for Positivity. His new mission; “Trench to Everest” - climbing 65,099 feet - the elevation difference between the lowest point on earth, the Marianas Trench, to the highest, Mount Everest. Harrison did the ride on Old Highway 40 from Donner Lake to Historic Donner Summit on September 8-9 with a group of friends who rode by his side, completing nearly 60 laps in 29 hours. Recorded on Donner Summit at the site of the event, this is a heavy story of friendship, community, commitment, struggle and loss. 3:30 – During the latest brown pow cycle, Tom crashes his mountain bike hard.6:40 – Steven Kotler – Gnar Country – learning to become a park skier at age 53. 9:40 – Introducing Harrison Biehl – Everesting Stanford Rock, trenching Old Highway 40.13:30 – Another sign of a big winter coming – crazy squirrels. Dr Will Duffin speaks to former Navy Diver and prolific underwater explorer and researcher Dr Joe Dituri. This episode is recorded from underwater as during Joe's 100 day under sea mission in the Jules Undersea Lodge in Florida. You can learn more about Joe's groundbreaking work here: https://drdeepsea.com/100-day-undersea-mission The following topics (amongst many others) are discussed:What it's like living in a confined tin can, why access to coffee is just as important as oxygen, and why it's actually a powderkeg that could up in flames at any moment. Joe even gives us a visual walk around of the habitat - (It's well worth loading up the youtube version of this podcast if you can). Joe tells us Why the cure for diseases like Alzheimer's, cancer and traumatic brain injury lie at the bottom of the ocean. They talk about the physiology of saturation diving, it's future application in science and research and as an analogue for long duration space flight. Joe answers the question of whether there could ever be a permanent undersea human habitat in the Marianas Trench? They also dive (excuse the pun) into Joe's professional background and how he reinvented himself in the world of science after a long career in the military. Joe is not only an accomplished scientist and diver but also a fiction writer. You can find a copy of his latest novel 'Secrets in Depth' here: https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/4511722.Joseph_DituriJoe will reveal the outputs of his groundbreaking science at this years World Extreme Medicine Conference 11-13 November in Edinburgh. We look forwards to seeing you there!
Dive deep with Kristen about the Mariana Trench or Marianas Trench. It's located in the western Pacific Ocean about 200 kilometres east of the Mariana Islands; it is the deepest oceanic trench on Earth. This is a special edition episode where I am joined by C.E. Hoffman to talk about Taylor Swift's new album, Midnights. We geek out about our favorite tracks, dive deep into how Taylor has grown as an artist, admit that neither of us were "swifties", and attempt to figure out what kind of literature Taylor Swift might be into. For those who don't know C.E. Hoffman: C.E. Hoffman is a published writer from Canada. Sluts and Whores, their #OwnVoices Urban Fantasy debut, was released Feb 2021 by Thurston Howl Publications. They've edited the e-zine Visceral Uterus since 2012. Meanwhile, their novels incubate. Inspirations run from Edith Wharton to Martin Millar to Zadie Smith. C's brain hosts tea parties for Haruki Murakami and C S Lewis. J D Salinger rants to Allen Ginsberg while Allen makes eyes at Irvine Welsh. Michelle Tea recites with Assata Shakur, Joy Harjo, and Saul Williams. Shakespeare's always there, but he's shy. So are the musicians. (MCR, Marianas Trench, The Hold Steady, Azealia Banks, Eminem, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meredith Wilson…) C devours books. Favourites of late: There There by Tommy Orange, Jack Wang's We Two Alone, and Neil S Reddy's forthcoming JubJub Juice. They're psyched to read Second Bell by Gabriela Houston, whilst enjoying Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. C writes about magic, sex, and death. They hug trees, love cats, and clearly dig Taylor Swift's new album. Tom Woods #TomWoods100 TomWoods.com TomSchoolofLife.com My goal is to get at least 100 people within the Tom Woods orbit on this show. We are building steady. Sean is the 5th person within Tom's orbit to come on the pod… First, if you don't know who Tom Woods is, you've probably been living under a rock, but Tom is a benefactor of mankind…and to my intelligence level. Check out TomWoods.com for a firehose worth of great content and then work your way to TomSchoolofLife.com. We need to keep the momentum going for this #TomWoods100 series. (And I apologize to Tom if I hijacked a hashtag he wanted &/or needed for another project…but I don't think so.) The point is—The O'Leary Review provides a platform for serious people to get the word out on what they are doing to make this world better. Also— our mission is to fight back against the crazy in this world. It exists all around us and we must eliminate it. How I met Sean. I met Sean a few weeks back when he facilitated an accountability group within the Tom Woods School of Life that I am a part of. “Blah blah blah…Austrian Economics…blah blah blah… I know nothing about that stuff.” Well, you should find out. And we provide a platform here—at least on the last few shows—where you can now jump on the Austrian train with relative ease. Over the last few podcasts, we've talked a bit about Austrian Economics and have provided resources in the various show notes. The following talk, however, is also worth your time if you have any inkling to discover more about why one should pursue Austrian Economics in even its basic forms. You'll likely discover that economics is indeed a field worth studying or exploring. “The Attractiveness of Austrian Economics” by Tom Woods from July of 2013. https://youtu.be/DStLhWMRERM More About Sean Lives in the Raleigh-Durham area after moving down from Toronto. Simbiotrek's office is in “Wake Forest.” Wake Forest, the town, is in the Raleigh-Durham area, also called the Research Triangle…not—as I found out doing a little cursory research—near Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. About a 2-hour car ride away! Notable son of Wake Forest: Bryce Love, former Stanford running back who had a phenomenal junior season at The Farm (Doak Walker Award, Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, Unanimous All-American, etc.). Attended Wake Forest-Rolesville High School. Love had one great college season after backing up Christian McCaffrey for two seasons then got hurt his senior year, playing off-and-on. Got hurt again—ACL tear—in his final college game, but was eventually drafted by the Washington Redskins, yet dealt with more injury trouble and never ultimately played a regular season game in the NFL. Great ballplayer. Sean's early days were spent in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kitchener, Ontario, however, and not in the Research Triangle. Sean's rooting interest in the CFL is for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. https://www.bluebombers.com/ A couple of other famous sons of Kitchener, Ontario: Lennox Lewis Former Heavyweight Champion of the World. Last heavyweight to hold the undisputed championship. Moved to Kitchener at the age of 12. 1988 Gold medal winner at the Seoul Olympics (representing Canada). Jamal Murray Utah Jazz guard. Currently recovering from a devastating ACL tear that caused him to miss the entire 2021-22 NBA season. Interestingly, Murray's father, Roger, competed in basketball against Lennox Lewis when they were younger and before Lewis started his boxing career. Roger also coached Jamal for a season at Orangeville Prep prior to the younger Murray going on to Kentucky to play for the Wildcats and coach John Calipari in the 2015-16 season. Murray's 20.0 scoring average is the highest for any freshman in program history and the highest single-season average for any player under Calipari in his time in Lexington. .... I am still trying to research the Canadian high school football rules Sean played under during his prep days and why it became a such a strange mashup of the Canadian and the American gridiron codes. Wikipedia has a “Comparison of American and Canadian Football,” but it does not do justice to what we were talking about in this episode. But, if you are not familiar with the code of Canadian football, but know the American code well enough—or vice-versa—this examination is a good start… ... Game mentioned: 100th Grey Cup November 25, 2012 at SkyDome/Rogers Centre in Toronto. Toronto Argonauts 35 — Calgary Stampeders 22 Attendance: 53,208 Halftime show included Canadians: Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianas Trench, and the ol' troubadour himself, Gordon Lightfoot. Sean's Core Values The Golden Rule The Stockdale Paradox Sean Kennedy is a youth hockey coach in North Carolina One of Sean's videos takes the lessons learned from a youth hockey tournament into entrepreneurship. https://wthtm.com/entrepreneurship-and-the-new-business/entrepreneurial-lessons-from-youth-hockey/547/ Read Sean's article and watch the video. He teaches lessons on how coaching translates to the business world. It struck me when Sean mentioned Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour was watching this tournament. I think it was 10U or 11U. One of Brind'Amour's sons was playing in the same tournament. It stood out because Brind'Amour was one of my favorite hockey players in the 1990s. I've never been a big Flyers fan, but I really liked his Flyers team of that era, where he was the second-line centre. Eric Lindros led the “Legion of Doom” line with John LeClair and Mikael Renberg as wingers. I almost exclusively used the Flyers when I played NHL96 on my computer…and I did that a lot at one stage of my life. In real life, that Flyers club made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997 but were eventually swept by the Red Wings (who won the Cup for the first time in 42 years). In that video game, it was hard to choose which future NHL general manager to put in goal for Philly: Ron Hextall or Garth Snow. Coach Terry Murray had a similar problem…both were good tenders. Rod Brind'Amour https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/b/brindro01.html Brind'Amour is now the coach for the Carolina franchise. It surprised me when I looked up his stats that he played for Carolina for so long, too. Ten seasons for the Canes to 7 as a Flyer. “Rod Brind'Amour” is also one of the great names in sports. They released their latest album DAYTONA BLEACH in early 2021 which included RWLYD along with Top 10 singles ALL OR NOTHING and OUT WITH THE OLD. By the way, OUT WITH THE OLD has over 1 million streams on Spotify! Sally is no stranger to the stage, she has toured extensively with MONOWHALES. Performances include Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Germany, Canadian Music Week in Toronto, Canada, Festival d'ete in Quebec City, Canada and Yellowknife PRIDE. MONOWHALES has played in support of artists including K Flay, Our Lady Peace, Death From Above 1979, Marianas Trench, Sloan, I Mother Earth and many more. MONOWHALES were just on a cross-Canada tour with indie-rock band Mother Mother and they have a new album slated for release Fall of 2022. Fun Fact: Three MONOWHALES songs off 2018's CONTROL FREAK were featured in Season 1, Episode 5 of 2020 Netflix series SPINNING OUT, which also included a cameo appearance by the band.
