Interview by Angela CroudaceBuster Bloodvessel, the iconic frontman of the legendary ska band Bad Manners, is about to bring the party to Australia with the band's greatest hits. As they prepare to perform for eager fans down under, Buster reflects on the band's incredible journey through the music scene and the ever-changing world of touring. From the early days of Bad Manners to their upcoming shows in Australia, Buster's enthusiasm for keeping the energy high on stage has never wavered.The band is known for its high-octane performances, and their Aussie tour will be no different. When asked what fans can expect from the show, Buster says it's going to be “the best of Bad Manners,” packed with all the classics. “We're not going to run away from any songs. We're playing the hits that everyone loves,” he shares. The European crowds have already been loving it, and Buster's looking forward to the fun-loving Aussies who, as he notes, have a similar energy to European audiences.Bad Manners has been part of the ska scene for decades, a genre that has seen many changes along the way. So, what's the biggest difference Buster has seen? “The internet,” he says. “It's changed a lot about the music business. People can find music so much easier now, and it's been great to see our audience grow, especially younger fans.” Despite the many changes, Buster remains proud to be at the forefront of the ska movement. “I didn't think we'd last this long,” he laughs, “but here we are, still doing it.”While Buster acknowledges that getting older has made the rigours of touring a little more challenging, he still finds the energy he needs. “Once you're on stage, and you feel that crowd, the adrenaline kicks in,” he says. "You forget about how tired you are."Looking back at the early days, Buster recounts how Bad Manners formed with a simple idea in mind: “We all went to school together, and I thought, why not form a band instead of just going to reunions? It's been 50 years, and I'm honored we're still doing this.” It's clear that his passion for music—and for performing—is as strong as ever.One of Buster's most memorable moments on stage came when the band played a massive festival to 110,000 people. “The crowd was going crazy, and the earth was actually moving,” he remembers. “You could see the trees swaying to the beat. It was absolutely mind-blowing.”But it's not all about the music for Buster. When he's not on tour, he enjoys unwinding with some DIY projects and relaxing on his houseboat. He also has properties in Bulgaria, which he works on when he's not touring. “I haven't had a proper holiday in years, but I feel lucky,” Buster says with a laugh. “Being in a band that travels so much, I get to experience so many places, so it's like a holiday in itself.”With an impressive catalogue of hits, it's no surprise that Sally Brown is one of Buster's favourite songs to perform. "It's a classic,” he says. "Every time we play it, the crowd just goes wild.” And while the band has faced its fair share of controversy, like getting banned from Top of the Pops for Buster's infamous red-painted head, he takes it all in stride. “I didn't realise that the red paint messed with the cameras. They told me it made it look like I didn't have a head, but hey, it's all part of the fun!”Buster's connection with his fans has been strong since the very beginning, especially when he shares stories of his past interactions. My dad was lucky enough to meet the band back in the day and was spot on about Buster being an all-round down to earth, friendly chap with a wicked sense of humour. “It's always great to hear that people remember us fondly, not just for the music, but for who we are as people.”With the band still rocking after all these years, it's evident that Bad Manners isn't slowing down anytime soon. Les années 1980 sont devenues magiques pour beaucoup de gens qui donneraient cher aujourd'hui pour y revenir. Et en y repensant, je dois vous avouer me souvenir qu'on avait l'impression de vivre un grand moment. Tout nous semblait nouveau et moderne en 1980 : on jouait aux Space Invaders, on écoutait des radios libres pour la première fois et on utilisait un enregistreur VHS. Et si, question musique, en 1980, il y avait encore des Chantal Goya pour chanter Bécassine et Julio Iglesias Je n'ai pas changé, le reste, mis bout à bout, était sacrément moderne : The Buggles, Orchestral Manoeuvres, Funkytown, le Manureva d'Alain Chamfort, le Banana Split de Lio ou John and Mary de Robert Palmer, c'est quand même une musique futuriste avec tous ces synthés.Et puis il y a le ska. Je revois encore toute la piste de danse sautant d'un bloc sur One step beyond quinze fois sur la soirée d'un samedi. C'était quelque chose de radicalement nouveau qui correspondait tellement à la jeunesse du début des années 80. Si le genre n'a pas fait long feu, en Angleterre, il a été un véritable phénomène social avec des groupes comme Madness, bien sûr, mais surtout les Specials, Selecter, Bad Manners et The Beat. Complètement méconnu chez nous, The Beat enchaîne trois albums, tous disques d'or, avant de se séparer. Alors qu'est-ce qu'on fait ? se demandent Andy Cox et David Steele, respectivement bassiste et guitariste de The Beat, les auteurs de cette intro que tous les Britanniques connaissent … Moi je vous dis : une paire pareille de musiciens ne devrait pas se séparer, et justement, ils décident de continuer ensemble. Mais que jouer comme musique ? Ils sont plutôt punk, ont connu le succès avec le ska, deux musiques bien passées de mode en 1984, alors ils suivent un peu le mouvement du milieu de cette décennie, avec les Wham!, Madness ou Culture Club qui ont injecté de la soul américaine dans leur musique. Andy et David jouent chacun de plusieurs instruments, ils sont un band à eux seuls mais voilà, il leur faut un chanteur, un frontman. Alors ils passent une annonce dans un magazine musical. Pour vous dire à quel point la scène musicale était intense et lisait les magazines, ils reçoivent 500 cassettes de gars qui veulent être leur chanteur. Quand va-t-on écouter tout ça ?Ben on s'arrête au premier qui nous plaît.Et si le suivant est dix fois meilleur ?Ils vont mettre huit mois à trouver le temps de tout écouter et à choisir le bon. Il se nomme Roland Gift, et a aussi fait du ska, mais comme saxophoniste, dans un groupe de Hull sur la côte est du nord de l'Angleterre, bien connue de ceux qui prennent le ferry pour la Hollande. Ainsi naissent les Fine Young Cannibals, un groupe qui incarne tellement la seconde partie des années 80, une carrière fulgurante, seulement deux albums mais quels albums, synthèse de la pop d'une époque où on vivait pour la musique.

Singer/ guitarist Richard and drummer Pete were introduced to bassist Alan by some HCE fans at St Paul's Arts Centre later that year, and The Anyways' core trio was born. Their goal was to wear black and sound like The Velvet Underground, but luckily they got it slightly wrong and ended up sounding like themselves (while still wearing black). Jennie used to read the newspaper onstage and on one occasion shorted out the keyboard by pouring fizzy pop into it. Trudy, a volunteer mental health worker, brought a big following from the Mill Drop-In Centre, to liven up the usual anoraked indie audience. Sounds reviewed the band's second gig, The Television Personalities offered support slots at the 100 Club in Oxford St, and Notown Records put out the first single, Confession, in 1987. Overcome by the excitement of being played on John Peel (once), Jennie left, and Ali took her place. The Anyways became regular performers at the Camden Falcon, where Bobby Gillespie told them they needed more guitar solos. Two tracks (no solos) were featured on The Jericho Collection in 1988 alongside Notown label-mates Shake Appeal (lots of solos). A video of rousing revolutionary anthem Levitate the Pentagon was shown on satellite TV at 2.00am. The Anyways played in Oxford, London, and Bristol with Talulah Gosh, Razorcuts, The Mission and Ride... and on their own at a Hindu wedding in Hendon (kicking off the evening with that cheery toe-tapper, Love Gone Bad). Band mantra Welcome to Psychedelic Country became even more appropriate when Hamish and Karen joined in 1990. An album (Love Lies) was recorded by Rich Haines at Dungeon Studios, but sadly not released. A swirling cover of George Harrison's If I needed someone graced a charity album called Revolution No. 9. Despite their sterling work on the swirling, Hamish and Karen decided to go more Country than Psychedelic, and left to form Lucky and The Losers in 1991. The final incarnation of The Anyways was completed by guitar maestro Mark, who had previously acted as friend and multi-tasking facilitator to the band for some time - in celebration, chilled Frascati was served to the new line-up onstage at the Zodiac in front of hundreds of delighted Heavenly fans. The Sunshine Down EP came out on Marineville Records in 1993, by which time Richard had received stage-fright counselling from Jonathan Richman and the band had supported Bad Manners at a college ball. Wider (not inspired by Buster Bloodvessel) was featured on the Days Spent Dreaming compilation. By now people wanted to spread their musical wings, so The Anyways' Grand Finale gig was held in 1994 at the Jericho Tavern (the band's spiritual home for many years). 

Today on Too Opinionated we chat with Man on the Inside actress Susan Ruttan! Susan played Roxanne Melman on L.A. Law from 1986 to 1993. She reprised the role in 2002 for a TV reunion, L.A. Law: The Movie. She earned four nominations for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in show. Susan first attracted significant attention playing the scheming wife of George Jefferson's dry-cleaning archrival, Gil Cunningham, on The Jeffersons. Other television appearances included episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, AfterMash, Bosom Buddies, Third Rock from the Sun, Remington Steele, Yes, Dear, Newhart and Gilmore Girls. Buffy creator Joss Whedon cast numerous show alumni in 2008's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, including Ruttan who appeared briefly in a non-speaking role. Susan had a small comedic role in the teen comedy feature film Bad Manners (aka: Growing Pains) (1984),  and the 1990 romantic comedy Funny About Love starring Gene Wilder. She played convicted killer Genene Jones in the television movie Deadly Medicine (1991). She has also appeared in an episode of Hannah Montana ("Promma Mia"). Her most dramatic role to date was in the 2004 remake of Helter Skelter, in which she played the mother of Linda Kasabian. Elana Levin from Graphic Policy Radio returns to the show for a deep dive into the second wave of Ska music, a brief but influential era when black and white UK musicians fused Jamaican dance music of the sixties into punk and new wave music of the seventies to create a sound that would further revolutionize American popular music in the nineties. The modern ska genre gets made fun of a lot (mozzarella sticks, anyone?) but Elana will have you know that ska music is not a joke. In an 18-month period, 2 Tone Records, an indie label founded by the keyboardist from The Specials, Jerry Dammers, took over the UK pop charts with major distribution support from Chrysalis Records. In the wake of the election of Margaret Thatcher and the rise of white nationalists taking advantage of national economic malaise, a musical rebuke of these trends came from bands in the town of Coventry, offering alternative visions of racial harmony and anti-fascist songs you could dance to. The 1981 concert documentary Dance Craze, recently restored, captures the 2 Tone bands performing in their prime. We discuss the evolution of ska, pay tribute to some of the top groups of the Second Wave Ska era including The Selecter, Madness, Bad Manners and The Specials and bid farewell to their lead singer the late great Terry Hall, whose passing last year inspired this episode. Episode 175 : Chris Pope from The ChordsOn this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, I am joined by Chris Pope - Songwriter, Musician and one of the founding members of The Chords.We take a journey through the bands formation at the tail end of 1978, after original singer/guitarist Billy Hassett and his bass playing cousin, Martin Mason, advertised for musicians in NME.Chris got the job and the band were soon into live gigs and studio recordings.Their style was a combination of punk and the 1960s influenced sound of the time.At the end of March 1979, the band played the Wellington in Waterloo to packed crowds with Paul Weller in the audience. Fred Armisen loves ska. He's brought it up on multiple Tonight Show appearances. Portlandia famously did the Bart Ska-mpson skit (with guest Matt Groening), and he performed a ska song in one Saturday Night Live sketch (with Bill Hader and Katy Perry). So, we brought Fred on the podcast and discussed all things ska. He had a lot to say on the topic. We talked about his love for 2 Tone ska bands (The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, English Beat, Bad Manners, The Bodysnatchers). But we also talked about the US ska bands he got to know in the 80s and 90s while he played drums in Chicago punk band Trenchmouth. Only a handful of bands made up the 2 Tone era of ska in late 70s England. Today, we bring on Rhoda Dakar, the singer of The Bodysnatchers, an all-female ska band that released 2 singles on the 2 Tone record label before breaking up. The band also recorded a few Peel Sessions and were featured on Dance Craze. Though short-lived, The Bodysnatchers were an important band and are still loved by many to this day. Rhoda also sang on the Specials' song "I Can't Stand It" (A really cool duet with Terry Hall), and was part of Jerry Dammers' Special AKA project. Their In The Studio record took 2 years to record. Rhoda tells us about "I Can't Stand It" and what it was like to work on In The Studio. (It was no fun!) We also talk about Rhoda's pre-Bodysnatchers years of being a punk kid and seeing Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, becoming friends with The Sex Pistols' Paul Cook and Steve Jones, and how she tried (and failed) to sneak into a Roxy Music concert in 1973. She tells us what it was like to work with The Interrupters on their most recent record, how she finally got to perform at the Brixton Academy Theater and the role that The Pogues' Shane MacGowan had in her joining The Bodysnatchers. She talks about writing "Ruder than You" with scenester Gaz Mayall (son of British blues legend John Mayall), playing on the Seaside Tour with The Specials and the Go Go's, and we talk about the legacy of her song The Boiler.  Support the show
