The 2023 LaoisToday QuizCast came to a conclusion in the Square Bar in Portlaoise on Friday night when the four semi-finalists - Brian Hogan, Murt Norton, Colin Delaney and Jack Scully - battled it for supremacy in front of a live audience. With a full house and a cracking atmosphere, quizmaster Mark Comerford put the contestants through their paces. And though there was a high standard of questions, there was also a very high standard of answers with both semi-finals and final being well contested affairs. The final was only decided with the very last question. And as well as a thrilling decider, we also had an entertaining curtain raiser - where Team Alan did battle with Team Steven in the 'Senior B'. Team Alan was comprised of LaoisToday's Alan Hartnett as well as Timahoe father and son duo Pauric and Liam 'Sheriff' Ramsbottom while Steven Miller from LaoisToday was joined by Courtwood's Mick Hogan and Portarlington's Darren Bracken. This year's LaoisToday QuizCast has been brought to you in association with the Square Bar, Market Square, Portlaoise. With quiz master Mark Comerford unavailable, Steven Miller steps into the hot seat. He is joined by Alan Hartnett and the pair have devised a brand new format to determine the overall winner. It's not often we get Tuesday night football in Laois and given Emo's surprise win over Graiguecullen in the delayed championship quarter-final we've produced a bonus edition to discuss that clash.  A throwaway line in our preview podcast last week dismissing their chances was used as ammunition in the buildup and they haven't been slow to let us know how wrong we were! Their thrilling 1-12 to 0-12 was the shock result of the quarter-final stage and sets up a semi-final meeting with Portarlington on Sunday week.  We look back on the game, the main talking points, the crucial winning goal and our choice of man of the match.  We also discuss Peter O'Neill's decision to step down as chairman of Laois GAA and the upcoming Congress where a major proposal is on the agenda in relation to the restructuring of the All Ireland football championship.  The LaoisToday Talking Sport Podcast is brought to you in association with Booth Concrete.

And it's back to hurling championship action this weekend with a number of big games in the top two grades set to finalise the quarter-final pairings. In the senior grade there are two games of huge consequence - Abbeyleix v Camross and The Harps v Rosenallis. The winners of those two games will go through to the quarter-finals while the respective losers will face off in the relegation playoff. The meeting of Borris-Kilcotton and Rathdowney-Errill and Clough-Ballacolla and Castletown will merely decide who goes through as group winners and straight to the semi-finals. Everything is still up for grabs in the premier intermediate grade though it's much clearer in the intermediate where the semi-finalists are already known and the main thing to be decided this weekend is who will end up in the relegation decider. Damien Carter is on the line with Alan Hartnett to look ahead to all of the games, while Alan also hears from Eddie Downey from Portarlington, about the club's hurling rise following their success in the U-15 'B' final last weekend. He chats about the work being done on hurling in Portarlington - as well as what the future might hold.
