The UK general election is now in its final stages and while the union-wide result hardly seems in doubt, each constituency and candidate has a story to tell. Here at the Hiraeth Pod we are recording a series of short interviews with new candidates who are contesting constituencies across Wales. These are new faces on the national scene and will no doubt feature in the 2026 Senedd campaign even if unsuccessful this time around. We plan to speak to each of the main parties in Wales, which we consider to be the ones standing in every constituency at the start of the campaign (though since then some have fallen away, as you are no doubt aware). So we will be sharing interviews with Conservative, Plaid Cymru, Green, Reform, Liberal Democrat, and Labour candidates as we try to uphold the values of public service broadcasting in the digital age. On the day the Urdd celebrated its 100th birthday, children, families and communities across Wales broke a new Guinness World Record. Alaw John speaks to pupils and teachers of Ysgol y Preseli in Pembrokeshire, about their contribution to the challenge, and the impact the Urdd has had on them throughout their lives.

In zato ponavljali iste stvari, samo v drugem okolju in z drugimi ljudmi. Tako pač je. Revolucije niso nikdar uspešne. Poglejte katerokoli od revolucij, ki so se kdaj zgodile, in povejte, če je katera kaj spremenila na bolje. Na vrh so prišli ljudje, ki so delali enake ali kdaj še hujše stvari kot tisti pred njimi. Zakaj to govorim? Ker si mnogi predstavljamo, da se bo pa nekoč, tistega zadnjega dne, vendarle zgodila dokončna Božja revolucija, ko bodo zmagali dobri in bodo poraženi hudobneži. »Glejte, da se ne daste zavesti!« (Lk 21,8) To se ne bo zgodilo. To ni Božja pot. Zgodilo se bo še mnogo človeških revolucij, nobena od njih pa ne bo Božja. Ljudje ubijamo in uničujemo, da bi naredili prostor za novo. Bog pa ne ruši, ne ubija in ne uničuje. Bog popravlja. Zida na ruševinah in uporablja stare kamne, da naredi nekaj novega. Ker je edino tako mogoče živeti. Ta njegova počasna in usmiljenja polna taktika je kdaj že prav nevzdržna, da ne rečem nemogoča. Toda Bog se ne sramuje ničesar, kar je ustvaril. (prim. Mdr 11,24) Zato tega tudi ne uničuje. Zla ne odpravlja s tem, da odstranjuje svoje nasprotnike, temveč tako da jih popravlja z odpuščanjem in usmiljenjem. Zato se novo življenje ne začne z novim listom, temveč z radirko. Novo življenje namreč ni toliko stvar prihodnosti. Veliko bolj zadeva našo preteklost. Ker je ne moremo zavreči. Ne moremo se delati, kakor da je ni. Ustvarila nas je take, kakršni smo. Zato se je tudi ni treba sramovati. Ker pač ne moremo rasti brez korenin, kakršnekoli že so. Zato se človek ne more spremeniti tako svojo preteklost uniči, temveč tako, da pusti, da ga preteklost popravi. In z njo sezida svojo prihodnost. Bog je graditelj, ki dela stvari za večnost. In zanj je snov, s katero zida moj novi jaz, moja preteklost, celo moji grehi. Nič drugega kot to. In večne stvari se zida samo tako. Zato tudi ne verujem v dan uničenja, temveč v dan popravljanja.

Jon Gower, writer and keen walker of the Welsh mountains, explores the unique characteristics of each of Wales's five ranges and reflects on what they mean to the people who live among them. For many people, Wales is synonymous with its mountains. They occupy a unique place in the country's ancient mythology, its history and its culture, defining who rules the country, who lives in it, and how they survive. But each of the mountain ranges of Wales has its own unique character. In this series of The Essay, Jon Gower paints a detailed portrait of the landscape of these higher places, and in doing so, explores how they've shaped the country's psyche. In ‘The Preseli Mountains', Jon explores the most mystical range of mountains, which are barely mountains, though the highest of them, Foel Cwmcerwyn, stands tall and sentinel enough to have guided the sailors of west Wales safely to shore. On a clear day you can see not only the patterned field tapestries of Pembrokeshire – shot through with the gold threads of gorse hedges – but also nine other Welsh counties, and the charcoal edge of Ireland across the sea. Erbyn ei fod yn un ar ddeg oed, roedd Hedd Ladd-Lewis wedi byw yn Kenya ac yn Zambia. Dychwelodd y teulu i Gymru, ac i lethrau Carn Ingli, pan ddaeth yn amser iddo fynd i'r ysgol uwchradd. Cafodd ei ysbrydoli gan ei athro hanes yn Ysgol y Preseli, yr arlunydd Aneurin Jones, a oedd yn defnyddio dulliau anghyffredin i gynnau diddordeb ei ddisgyblion. Yn ddeuddeg oed, cloddiodd Hedd gyda thîm o archeolegwyr am y tro cyntaf, ac ers hynny hanes ac archaeoleg sydd wedi mynd â'i fryd. Interview Starts 26:06   Paul Devereux is a researcher, presenter, artist, broadcaster and author of many things that interest us in Grimerica. Hist latest books are Sacred Geography and Lucid Dreaming - How to Access your Inner Virtual Realities.   Paul's main interest has been archeoacoustics, ancient lifeways and earth mysteries. Gordon Freeman, author of Hidden Stonehenge - Ancient Temple in North America Reveals the Key to Ancient Wonders. Gordon has discovered lunar and solar calendars at ancient sites right in Grimerica's back yard. This great book is the result of Gordon's 30 year quest to understand these ancient sites.    Gordon Freeman, Ph.D is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta and for 40 years has been pioneering disciplinary studies in chemistry, physics, and human societies. Stonehenge in central southern England is known the world over as an iconic symbol of Europe’s prehistoric past. In this lecture Professor Timothy Darvill of Bournemouth University, UK, will show that while Stonehenge’s origins as a ceremonial monument were conventional enough its later history was exceptional. Key to the transformation was the arrival of about 80 pillars of Bluestone rock brought a distance of around 250km from the Preseli Hills of southwest Wales to Salisbury Plain. But why were these stones important? And what did they mean to Neolithic people? Using archaeological evidence from Stonehenge itself and from recent work in the Preseli Hills, and folklore and oral tradition dating back to the 13th century AD, a new picture of Stonehenge is emerging in which the stones themselves can be seen to have perceived magical properties connected with healing. Their re-use in later and ever more elaborate structures at Stonehenge show something of their power and significance and illustrate how the landscape of the Preseli Hills is constructed in microcosm at Stonehenge. People were attracted to the area from continental Europe, and what started out as a local focus became a celebrated place for prehistoric pilgrimage.
