Last year may have been a bit of a washout for AAAs, but the indie game scene is still going strong, despite the many obstacles presented by the modern games industry and… our contemporary world in general. Happily, this year looks set to continue the indie gem trend; even though the calendar is so far looking pretty empty of firm release dates as every game developer and their mum attempts to edge away from the all-consuming spectre of GTA6, there's already plenty on the horizon for us to get excited about all the same. Rebecca, meanwhile, thinks that 2026 may have peaked already as far as AAA gaming goes with the release of Heartopia – an Animal Crossing inspired "slow life sim" that somehow also encompasses all of the other trends she's associated with (a mobile live-service game possessed of the world's most useless and forgettable gacha). Did you know Stonehenge is actually a youngster compared to some ancient buildings? For example, the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is over 4,500 years old, making it much older than Stonehenge. There's also the Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, which dates back around 11,000 years and is considered the world's oldest known temple. Even older is the Cairn of Barnenez in France, a massive stone structure that's about 7,000 years old. The World of Eora is a news & lore podcast about the fantasy setting created by Obsidian Entertainment for their cRPG series, Pillars of Eternity, and their action RPG: Avowed.This week is more of a "stream of consciousness" talk, with lore discussed throughout. A looooong time ago I talked about infusing the world of Eora into tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons (specifically 5th Edition). However, what if you were playing games more in line with the OSR ("Old School Renaissance") style of play, such as Cairn, which I've recently gotten into. It's a much less measured approach, but one that seems more intuitive...and one that seems easier with Avowed, I might add.So I discuss the biggest ideas in Eora that we see in the games that need to be considered when approaching OSR style TTRPGs. This might be the first in a couple episodes dedicated to this topic, but it won't be a long-running thing, since we want to focus on different lore here over time.
