After delays connected to COVID-19, a first-of-its-kind program is finally up and running for women incarcerated at the New Hampshire Correctional Facility for Women in Concord, NH. This "Prison Outreach Program" connects woodworkers with inmates to teach them important skills that can translate into a career, or hobby, once they leave custody and start over. Leah Woods and Lynn Szymanski join Nichole to talk about how the program is making a difference and how they're doing it with limited resources. PLUS: Researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston say they have discovered a potential new weapon to be used against the COVID-19 virus: a "decoy drug"! Dr. Gordon Freeman, Professor of Medicine at DFCI, and Clinical Fellow Dr. James Torchia talk with Nichole about the science behind this, and what the decoy could mean for treatment moving forward, especially for immunocompromised people.
Brian and Angelo are happy about all the form feedback they are getting, discuss the fact that there are counterfeit chips in cars, VW really messes up with its car tracking feature, and Star Fox turns 30. Half-Life is a series of first-person shooter (FPS) games developed and published by Valve. The games combine shooting combat, puzzles and storytelling. The original Half-Life, Valve's first product, was released in 1998 for Windows to critical and commercial success. Players control Gordon Freeman, a scientist who must survive an alien invasion. The innovative scripted sequences were influential on the FPS genre, and the game inspired numerous community-developed mods, including the multiplayer games Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Half-Life was followed by the expansions Opposing Force (1999), Blue Shift (2001) and Decay (2001), developed by Gearbox Software. In 2004, Valve released Half-Life 2 to further success, with a new setting and characters and physics-based gameplay. It was followed by the extra level Lost Coast (2005) and the episodic sequels Episode One (2006) and Episode Two (2007). The first game in the Portal series, set in the same universe as Half-Life, was released in 2007.Over the following decade, numerous Half-Life games were canceled, including Episode Three, a version of Half-Life 3, and games developed by Junction Point Studios and Arkane Studios. In 2020, after years of speculation, Valve released its flagship virtual reality game, Half-Life: Alyx. The Daydreamcast is seeing double with a two-feature show! In this episode Bro and Murph anticipate Elden Ring's impending release, talk about AER, Grand-Theft Auto San Andreas, and Hero's Hour! Murph has played some obscure indies and Bro played an old game. What a shock! After, we try to escape the top-secret Black Mesa facility as Gordon Freeman. Has the game aged well enough? Can we forgive the mistakes it's made in the name of innovation or is it just impossible to have fun? After, we also examine its sequel: Half-Life 2. Where we talk about how it goes above and beyond the original title's goals and what makes the game special. We also wonder if it's just a tad overrated.
Gordon Freeman, G-Man, ikonické zvuky a... hudba? Jarda Konáš přináší rozbor jejího vlivu na vyprávění legendárního Half-Life a Half-Life 2! Série Half-Life je fenomén sám o sobě.

Join us this week to discuss arguably one of the best games of all time. We rejoin Gordon Freeman following the events at Black-Mesa as we embark on a new journey in Half-Life 2. Is this gem of the noughties really all it's cracked up to be?
In 2007, the gaming world held its breath as it counted down to the release of the final episodic instalment to the main Half-Life game series. Gordon Freeman and game-developer, Valve's, story came to prominence with the release of the original Half-Life in 1998, the release of the sequel, Half-Life 2, in 2004 and then 2 more episodes continuing Gordon's story set to end with the final Half-Life 3, or Half-Life 2 episode 3, in December 2007. But that game has never been released! The story ends on a cliffhanger, press releases were made to hype the Christmas release of that final instalment, but Valve devolved into silence and not a whisper has been heard about the fabled Half-Life 3... Will it ever get released, and why hasn't it been? Where will the story go? Matt and AJ speculate... for far longer than is strictly necessary! “...” - Gordon Freeman, expressing his love for this podcast. Maybe... It's been a few weeks, and we're back at it with another Weekly Whadaya' Playin' for your earholes! This week: Travis dives back into the world of "Apex Legends" and has some different feelings towards it now, Kyle continues to push through "Cyberpunk 2077" and it's bugginess, & Preston wraps things up by "sticking his neck out" for "Little Nightmares II." This episode will kick off our four episode tour of Half-LIfe. Join Caleb J. Ross and Travis Terry as they step into the shoes of scientist Gordon Freeman and trek through dauntless corridors wrought with unsightly headcrabs, and perhaps even worse, other scientists. The hosts hit every major beat of the narrative, summing up all the logical and often illogical moments that take place as our silent protagonist finds himself in the middle of a cosmic war that he, himself, might have caused. Welcome to Half-Life 2! More Gordon Freeman and more crowbar action. Join Caleb J. Ross and Travis Terry accompany you on a journey in and out of The Combine while being cosmically harassed by a creep that goes by The G-Man. In this episode, we continue to follow Gordon Freeman and Alyx around while they search for answers surrounding The Combine and the aliens who spew from it. We still do not know what the G-Man is thinking and we have no understanding of what the stakes are but it's probably grim. Right? Join Caleb J. Ross and Travis Terry on this half-step entry into what could have been Half-Life 3 but is instead just some episodic in-between.Check out our website: http://www.polymedianetwork.com Follow the show on twitter: @TalesLesser http://www.twitter.com/taleslesserFind Caleb @calebjross http://www.twitter.com/calebjrossFind Travis @travplaysgames http://www.twitter.com/travplaysgamesIntro/Outro theme: Brad Sucks Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/polykill)
In this final episode of our Half-Life series, find out where the mystery has been left for the last decade plus. The narrative picks up momentum as new characters arrive and others do not survive. Hear the cliffhanger that has left fans eager for an answer. Caleb J. Ross and Travis Terry do their best to make light of this unfortunate scenario as Gordon and the gang romp through a zombie and alien infested wasteland in search of answers.Check out our website: http://www.polymedianetwork.comFollow the show on twitter: @TalesLesser http://www.twitter.com/taleslesserFind Caleb @calebjross http://www.twitter.com/calebjrossFind Travis @travplaysgames http://www.twitter.com/travplaysgamesIntro/Outro theme: Brad Sucks Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/polykill)
Nate, Sebastian, and Jordan gather to discuss HALF-LIFE 2, Valve's 2004 sequel shooter with a gun that throws heavy objects. We discuss the limits of narrative in first-person shooters, the shifting boundaries of the uncanny valley, and how every NPC in the game can't stop talking about what a big, strong man Gordon Freeman is. Nate admits to finally warming to the Half-Life franchise, Jordan recalls leaving his first days wrangling with Steam, and Sebastian refers to the game's sound effects as "little Proustian cookies."
A hyper-blue crystal creates a duplicate of Jack that goes home in his place. Instead of discovering this, everyone is keen to supply both sides of the conversation, as if Jack was Gordon Freeman. But when Jack O'Real shows up, they put the pieces together surprisingly quickly. Is there a conspiracy behind office staffing and bathrooms? Does Hammond have a red alert bracelet? How much does the set dressing tail wag the story dog? It's the episode with equal parts emotional realness and bathroom talk. Infos zum Spiel: Thema: Half-Life, 1998 Plattform: Windows-PC, später Playstation 2/3, MacOS, Linux, Xbox Entwickler: Valve Publisher: Sierra Studios Genre: Ego-Shooter Designer: Mike Harrington, Marc Laidlaw Komponist: Kelly Bailey Podcast-Credits: Sprecher: Christian Schmidt, Gunnar Lott Audioproduktion: Fabian Langer, Christian Schmidt Titelgrafik: Paul Schmidt Intro, Outro: Nino Kerl (Ansage); Chris Hülsbeck (Musik) www.stayforever.de
Quem diabos é o G-Man?
This week, Splitscreen gets spooky discussing our fears, phobias, and things that are just plain creepy. We wonder: what happens when you lock Sam Fisher, Crash Bandicoot, Gordon Freeman, Zelda, and more in a cabin in the woods? And finally, we talk about what makes a video game Halloween event truly special in this All Hallow’s Eve edition of Splitscreen.
Episode 8 of Tales from the Cartridge! We finish the story of Half-Life/Black Mesa and seriously discuss if Gordon Freeman's suit has a built-in diaper. It has to have one, right?! Come join us to decide for yourself!
Episode 7 of Tales from the Cartridge! Try not to get too steamed (get it?) as we continue down the Valve rabbit hole! We explore the first half of the story of Half-Life/Black Mesa and ponder many questions including if Gordon Freeman has a necessary built-in diaper in his iconic HEV suit! The Coronasphere is leaking! We're back with more outdated news for y'all but our conversations rule so you still need to listen! There's a bit of coronavirus news this week, we cover that right at the top, as usual! The big stuff that happened was all Nintendo! Nintendo had a "mini direct" where they announced or talked about a bunch of games: Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Catherine: Full Body, Bravely Default 2, Bioshock Collection, Borderlands Legendary Collection, XCOM 2 Collection, Panzer Dragoon, Star Wars Episode One Racer, Kings Bounty 2, Shinsekai, Ring Fit Adventure Update, Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy, Ninjala, and Clubhouse Games 51 Worldwide Classics. And as if that wasn't enough, there was Nintendo Indie World which announced the following for Switch: Blue Fire, Baldo, I Am Dead, B.ARK, Cyanide and Happiness Freakpocalypse, Summer in Mara, Quantum League, The Good Life, The Last Campfire from Hello Games (of No Man's Sky), Pixel Junk Eden 2, Elden Souls, Blair Witch, Sky Racket, superliminal, Wingspan, Dicey Dungeon, Bounty Battle, Moving out and form Apple Arcade exclusive, Exit the Gungeon! And to tie everything all off we cover the games coming out this spring, Doom having tiny subtitles, the lack of a crowbar in Half Life: Alyx, and a Max Max Furiosa spinoff!
Hidden Stonehenge is the remarkable chronicle of one man's thrilling quest to solve a profound archeological mystery. On the remote plains of southern Alberta sits an ancient temple older than England's Stonehenge by some 800 years. Yet, like Stonehenge, it features a built-in calendar of astonishing accuracy. Incredibly, 5,000 years ago, Britons and Plains Indians were making precise astronomical observations at these two sites. Follow Professor Freeman as he explores the astonishing implications of his discoveries.Gordon Freeman was born in Canada and was introduced to Stone Age artifacts at the age of six, when his father collected stone projectile points and tools from the prairie after dry winds had blown away tilled soil. In 1980, Freeman discovered an ancient Sun Temple in southern Alberta and has studied it ever since. He has an MA from the University of Saskatchewan, a PhD from McGill, and a DPhil from Oxford.
Rise and shine Mr. Freeman. This week we are diving into the story of everyone's crowbar wielding mute, Gordon Freeman. Half Life 2 is considered to be one of the best PC games of all time only succeeded by it's predecessor, Half Life. In this episode we talk about the immense pressure Valve put themselves under to not only create a sequel worth playing, but going above and beyond the expectations of everyone.

Issues covered: defeating Darth Vader, the complexity of the world and reflecting that in TIE Fighter, taking a twist on the Chosen One, developing the character of Gordon Freeman and ultimately cutting the cutscenes, having a scene of level designers competing with one another and also with other companies, making single-player content be moment-to-moment excellence, the enemy AI playing against you in X-COM, flying under the radar, adding dynamic difficulty at the last possible moment, Tim loses his X-COM save file, thematic and story integration, holistic design (between control/mechanics/camera/space), less is more, individual effort shining through, homogenization of game development, nailing the 3D camera, shipping your experiments. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Anachronox, Darren Johnson, Reed Knight, TIE Fighter, Dan Connors, Mark Cartwright, Larry Holland, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Republic Commando, Planescape: Torment, Chris Avellone, Half-Life, Marc Laidlaw, Chuck Jones, Dario Casali, Fallout, Sin, Daikatana, Quake II, Titanfall 2, Respawn Entertainment, Chris Blohm, Julian Gollop, X-COM: UFO Defense, Microprose, Phoenix Point, Star Wars: Starfighter, Fumito Ueda, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Silent Hill 2, Super Mario 64, Battlefront II, Metal Gear Solid, The Last Guardian, Fred Markus, Aaron Evers. Barry was diagnosed in 2012 with stage 3 lung cancer after experiencing swelling in his neck that had repeatedly showed up and disappeared several times. He went to see his primary care doctor and an oncologist. He was told he had 18 months to live in 2012. Barry went to see Dr. Lathan for a second opinion and wound up staying to be treated at Dana-Farber. Barry's treatment included chemotherapy, radiation, and a few clinical trials. In February 2014, he began a trageted gene therapy called immunotherapy. This saved Barry's life. He says this "is when my whole life began to change." Barry has been off treatment since February 2016 and healthy. He previously served as a certified risk manager and has two adult daughters. He is very active in church. Valve is one of the most well-known and respected developers around today, and their first game, Half-Life spawned one of gaming’s biggest franchises. When it hit the PC in 1998, Half-Life wowed critics and went on to become one of the most popular first person shooters ever released for both PC and console. A seamless mix of first person shooting action and science fiction storytelling, the adventure catapulted Gordon Freeman into the limelight and cemented Valve as a force to be reckoned with. The success of Half-Life lead to a sequel and spin offs on both PC and console, as well as the development of brain teasing, dystopian puzzlers Portal and Portal 2 – a series which has also been blessed with a whole lexicon of lore and internet memes. In this latest episode of Maximum Power Up, hosts Phil and Tom get together to discuss their first encounters with Gordon Freeman’s HEV suit, the famous crowbar, Black Mesa, the Combine, the G-Man, the portal gun and whether the cake really is a lie. It’s time to suit up, and blast through the infested sewers of City 17 and the mind-bending Aperture Science Labs as Maximum Power Up looks at the awesome Half-Life and Portal series. Music tracks featured are: Half-Life 2 - Sector Sweep Portal - Stop What You Are Doing Portal - Still Alive We hope you enjoy the show and if possible please leave us an iTunes review or rating. It's time to face facts: Half-Life 2 is officially old—and to make things even more tragic, we still don't have a Half-Life 3. But even if Valve's acclaimed FPS series leaves us hanging forever, their 2004 sequel remains one of the most influential games of all time. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, and guest Kevin VanOrd for a look into why Gordon Freeman's return turned so many heads. And if you'd like to fully recreate the Half-Life 2 experience, you can always run around smashing things with a crowbar while you wait for us to finish talking. Be sure to visit our blog at Retronauts.com, and check out our partner site, USgamer, for more great stuff. And if you'd like to send a few bucks our way, head on over to our Patreon page!

Never much of a fan of the first person genre, the Bros went into this month a little skeptical. However after experiencing this amazing offering from Valve their tunes have changed. The Club got it's first taste of the G-Man and Gordon Freeman in Half Life 2 this Christmas. Did the Bros end up on the naughty list by the end of it? Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross bang out a conversation about Half-Life. It's pretty safe to divide first person shooters into two categories: everything that came before Half-Life, and everything that came after Half-Life. Welcome to episode nine of Retrograde! This week for Retrograde the team battle like a resonance cascade scenario by arguing about the 1998 classic PC game Half-Life. Join me, Jack Marshall, and my co-hosts James McFadyen, Lysanne Fisher and Anthony Hobday as we don a hazardous environment suit and beat the living snot out of helpless aliens in Half-Life. We discuss the ins and outs of the game covering topics such as the legacy of the game, the new Black Mesa Source mod, the great years of gaming of 1997 & 1998, the ethical dilemmas in the game, and even discuss why the hell Gordon Freeman needed a degree from MIT to push a trolley ten feet. So grab a crowbar, smash a crate, and spam F6 as the Retrograde team do Half-life.

We recently uncovered an issue about online gaming that stung us as gamers. Justin, Cole, Gifford, and Christina revisit FatUglyOrSlutty.com and try to get to source of the offensive behavior girl gamers endure just to play their favorite games. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow It felt odd a few episodes ago to have 4 guys commenting about the abuse girls receive while gaming online, so we thought we’d bring in Christina to further evaluate the situation. Of course, we have to get through our Threesomes of the Week and a debate about the worstbest superhero movies. The On the Spot question asks: Which guy stereotypes in video games annoy you the most? And Gifford is shown that there are more bad ass scientists in games than there used to be. We kick off the Games Need Women conversation with Christina’s reaction to FatUglyOrSlutty.com while trying to figure out what games encourage/discourage the negative types of behavior that attack girl gamers. We take a break to highlight some of the stand out women in gaming from Roberta Williams to Amy Hennig before trying to find some solutions to weeding out the jerks online. Our next Horrible Night Out is announced for Friday April 15th at Net Heads so be on the look out for more information soon. Finally, we give big props to FreddieW and his ridiculous YouTube videos.
