On this episode of Travels by Broomstick, we investigate the fascinating true story of the namesake lion in Disney's classic The Lion King. We visited the Pumping Station, an antique shop unique among many in Cardiff, Wales. Unknown to most, this shop once housed the supposed remains of one of cinematic history's most famous animal actors. Simba is famous for starring opposite Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 film Cleopatra. He was also the namesake for Disney's beloved king of the jungle. According to the information displayed within his case, at one point, the cat also held the Guinness World Record for being the world's largest lion. We don't know where Simba has now disappeared to but if we find out, we will update you via the community tab so make sure you're subscribed! Come along as we explore the history behind this incredible cat. ✰✰✰✰✰ Have a spooky suggestion for our next episode? We'd love to hear from you! In the latest episode of the London History Podcast, we delve into the fascinating and crucial chapter of London's history surrounding the Crossness Pumping Station. The mid-19th century was a time when London grappled with the unignorable problem of sanitation, culminating in the notorious event known as the Great Stink of 1858. We begin by exploring the life and career of Joseph Bazalgette, the visionary engineer whose ambitious and innovative sewage system still underpins London's infrastructure today. Bazalgette's monumental undertaking, instigated by the Great Stink, is beautifully narrated, bringing the period's pressing health issues, political pressures, and scientific discoveries to life. The episode then transitions to the architectural marvel of the Crossness Pumping Station, one of Bazalgette's crowning achievements. You'll hear about its intricate design, the advanced-for-its-time technology, and its pivotal role in transforming London's sanitation system. Finally, the episode concludes with the heartbreaking tale of the Princess Alice disaster. This tragic maritime accident underscored the importance of Bazalgette's work and highlighted the stark realities of Victorian London's public health crisis. This episode is an engaging blend of science, history, and biography, showcasing the remarkable individuals and events that shaped London's path towards modernity. Tune in for a comprehensive look at how London transformed from the Great Stink to a city renowned for its effective sewage system. Early last year, we spoke to Harem Murdochy, owner of the Boat House, St Andrews chippie and other establishments around Portobello. At that time, he had just signed a lease to turn part of the Pumping Station at the Joppa end of the Prom into a seafood restaurant – and we don’t just mean a fish-and-chip shop there. He was thinking of much more up-market fare – mussels, perhaps lobster – and the idea would be to put tables outside on the big viewing platform. Well, now the signs for Joppa Rocks, as the new venue will officially be called, are up on the fencing outside. And as usual there are mixed view about the project. We’re happy just to wait and see. 18 months ago, the podcast carried a feature about an online campaign to persuade the people of Portobello to use the golf course. The problem was that demand had fallen so much that Edinburgh Leisure was threatening to close it. However, the latest figures suggest that news of its demise was premature. The point is that people have been using not just the Portobello course but all of the municipal courses around the city – up by some 65% in the months from June to December – that’s the period from the beginning of June when they were able to open after first full lockdown, through to the end of the year.Edinburgh Youth Theatre, the anchor tenant in Bellfield, has arranged an acting masterclass with the actor James McAvoy on Zoom this evening. James is a patron of EYT and earlier donated £10k to help students and ensure that its classes remain accessible to all during the pandemic. The audience will be able to ask James questions questions about his successful and fascinating career. The event is by ticket only – which you can find on Eventbrite – and proceeds will go towards supporting the well-being and creativity of young people in Edinburgh. And finally, the cancer charity Maggie’s challenged people to run 50 miles in January to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. Well, local resident Annabel Meikle, who lives in a flat overlooking the Prom, decided to do 50 swims instead – yes, in the Forth… in January! And on Saturday, she completed the challenge, looking rather cold but delighted with the support she’s received. Well done, Annabel.

Portobello Prom and Beach are well used by locals and visitors alike – one only has to think of the crowds who thronged here over the Easter Weekend to see this in action. However, there’s been a lot of interest in how to improve the area, to make everyone’s enjoyment of the beach that much better; and we’re not just talking about the area where most people tend to congregate, between Tumbles and the Swim Centre. The Prom after all stretches from Seafield all the way to the Pumping Station in Joppa, a total of two miles. In the Podcast, we’ve reported on some the changes that are taking place. However, many of them are being drawn under the umbrella of Friends of Porty Prom (and Beach) which held its first ever AGM this past week. David Calder was there.

TriPod: New Orleans at 300 returns with its NOLA versus Nature series . This week: WWNO’s Laine Kaplan-Levenson and Travis Lux look at the city’s drainage pumps, and the man behind their design -- Albert Baldwin Wood. New Orleans is below sea level. You know this, and certainly, if you were here this past August, you really know this. Almost a foot of rain fell over a couple hours and parts of town were knee deep in water. The sewerage and water board caught a lot of flack for this, people lost a lot of faith when they found out that the city’s pumps, and generators -- things that were supposed to keep the city from flooding - were broken. Joe Becker worked for the sewerage and water board for thirty years, and was actually the superintendent. Becker retired last summer after the flood drama. You might have some feelings about him, or the Sewerage and Water Board. But Becker really knows his pumps. He recently took me on a tour of Pumping Station #1 - right in the neutral ground of
