See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Amazon is in trouble—so are its people.Journalist Heriberto Araujo has been investigating the stories of the Amazon for over a decade. In his forthcoming book: Masters of the Lost Land. The Untold Story of the Amazon and the Violent Fight for the World's Last Frontier he presents a three-year investigation to uncover a widespread underworld of violence, corruption, and impunity that has delivered the riches of the Amazon to a ruthless elite. But in this true crime story, set against the backdrop of the towering Brazilian jungle and unfolding over five decades, not everyone surrenders to the power of guns and money. And that's what makes the story extraordinary. He joins me to tell the story of Maria Joel Dias Da Costa, the widow of murdered activist, José Dutra da Costa. Dezinho, as he was known, had rallied the rural worker's union against rampant corruption of wealthy landowners driving deforestation and death through the jungle. He died in the arms of his wife after being shot outside their home. Maria took it upon herself to continue her husband's work, confronting the political, economic and industry elites to save her home, family and community from these terrible forces.Heriberto goes on to discuss the fascinating connection between inflation and land-grabbing in the Amazon, explaining how many people take land to protect their interests in an unstable economic climate, before taking a wider overview of Brazilian politics and relationship with China, and the impact that may have on the climate fight in coming years.“There were many businessmen and wealthy families who saw opportunity and decided to move to the Amazon to expand dramatically the land that they could own. There are some cases which are shocking—some landowners had ranches, or claimed to have ranches, the size of Cuba or Honduras… “Maria Joel was a normal housewife with four underage children whose husband was murdered. She held her husband in her arms while he was dying. She had two choices. Either she simply move from the region, from this small town, and try to turn the page because she suspected that she would have to confront the economic and the political elite of the town. In one of those momentous situations of her life, she decided to stay in that town no matter the risk. What I found incredibly interesting from my book was exploring the feelings and the doubts and the controversies of a woman who would have chosen another life.” Planet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it. We're back with a long awaited return of The Stars Made Me Murder! Kailin joins Ciera and Mimí in this millenial mashup where true crime meets astrology. While many of us have heard of the Zodiac Killer, this episode is about the COPYCAT zodiac killer, Heriberto "Eddie" Seda...and when you hear about his Leo placements you KNOW he must be raging at that title. While we hear about Kailin's research on this fascinating and frustrating case, Mimí and Ciera go over the transits happening during these crimes, the birth chart of the copycat zodiac killer, and (pretty darn fantastically) speculate on their rising and moon sign. While the stars don't ACTUALLY make anyone murder...we uncovered a lot of astrological insights through hearing and discussing these horrendous incidents. A special mention to the victims and their families: Joseph "Joe" Proce, Patricia Fonte, and John DiAcone. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/martha8111/support

Capítulo 054: On this episode of Ocu-Pasión we are joined by visual artist and aztec dancer, Heriberto Luna. Listen in as we discuss how he developed his skills as an earth sculptor and painter and drawing inspiration from the universality of ancient knowledge & the mysteries of the universe. Born in Mexico City in 1976, he immigrated to the United States a year after. Of 6 children, he is the second to the youngest. Heriberto Luna comes from a colorful background. His grandfather was one of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata's soldiers, and his father was in the Mexican army. His grandmother was a Mayan shaman, fluent in two indigenous languages. Graduating from Franklin High School, in Los Angeles, Luna was surrounded by gangs but found his salvation at age 16 in the arts. At La Tierra de la Culebra, an urban art park in Northeast LA, he developed his skills as an earth sculptor and painter. Combined with his passion for performing Aztec dancing as both a dancer and a drummer, the artistic exposure gave him focus and strengthened his resolve to rise above the bad circumstances around him. During 2002 and 2005 Luna apprentice in major mural projects with L. A's most influential muralist team the East Los Streetscapers, and artist Paul Botello. Luna met Los Angeles artist Margaret Garcia and in 2002 he apprenticed with her and with New Mexico Master artist Pola Lopez The result of all that hard work is clear, as Luna has exhibited over to 50 Museums thus far, among them such prestigious locations as: The Santa Monica Museum of Art, The National Mexican Fine Art Museum in Illinois and The Museum of History and Art in Ontario, California. Beyond that, Luna's works have become part of major art collections at Arizona State University and in 2006 Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presented him with an award of recognition for his accomplishments in the arts; Luna has also been awarded two artist-in-residence grants from the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs department. As his art career continues to bloom, Luna remains dedicated to under privilege youths, he is currently teaching arts classes in the Juvenile Halls for Theatre of Hearts and serves as a mentor. Heriberto Luna's success is measurable on many different levels yet what makes him most proud is seeing the young people that he has worked with turn to the community and become mentors themselves. Some have gone on to achieve gallery and museum showings as well. Withal, Luna's bold colors juxtaposed with ancient inspiration and strong commitment to the future of his community bring a powerful and profound statement to the art world and beyond.
Andrew speaks with Heriberto Seda AKA The New York Zodiac Killer. Seda attempted to mimic California's Zodiac Killer from 1990-1993 in New York City, gripping the city in fear totaling 9 victims, 3 of which died from their injuries. Seda sent taunting letters to law enforcement and the media just like the Zodiac Killer had done. Seda was arrested after he had an altercation with his half-sister Gladys 'Chachi' Reyes, he shot her in the buttocks and held her and her boyfriend hostage, getting into a shootout with police. Seda surrendered, he was eventually implicated and charged with the shootings, convicted on all counts receiving a 232-year prison sentence.Unforbiddentruthpodcast.com

This is a special, unedited, bilingual bonus episode – and one wild ride of a story. We are releasing it just in time for the feast day of St. Lazaro, Dec. 17th!It's the story of Heriberto Canela, who left Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift. His arrival in the United States was epic, but to add to that, he promised to return for his parents. So, after arriving in the States, he threw himself to the sea again. The near-death odyssey that ensued is detailed here straight from Heriberto himself, joined by his wife, and his son, actor, Jason Canela, who carries his dad's legacy forward. Pirates, puking, shots fired, betrayal, illness, being lost at sea, promise, hope, family – you name it, this story has it. Tune in for more!
