Gale was born and raised in St Louis, Missouri, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in Cinema from the University of Southern California in 1973, where he met and began his association with his longtime collaborator, Robert Zemeckis. Gale has written or co-written over 30 screenplays and his other film credits include 1941, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Used Cars, Trespass and Interstate 60, the last of which he also directed. In addition to his film and television work, and being the ‘Gatekeeper' for the BTTF franchise, Gale has written comic books including Spider-Man, Batman and IDW's Back to the Future title, thus proving to his father that he did not waste hours and hours reading comics in his youth. He has given talks on screenwriting in colleges across the USA, and enjoys meeting fans at comic conventions and Back to the Future events. When he's not in production, writing, or wasting time on the internet, he actually does take out the trash, even when his wife doesn't ask (well, sometimes he does). Robert Zemeckis was one of the most prominent directors of the eighties and nineties. His string of hits is almost unmatched. Think about it - Romancing the Stone, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, etc. This is why it's so bizarre that a live-action Disney Pinocchio movie directed by Zemeckis and starring his best favorite leading man, Tom Hanks, was essentially dumped to streaming. It came and went without much fanfare, while it would have been a cinematic event fifteen years ago. WTF Happened? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Zemeckis' career, which began with the underrated pair I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars before Romancing the Stone made him an A-lister. We dig into how he was actually fired from Cocoon because the Fox brass thought Romancing the Stone would flop, leading to him making Back to the Future with pal Steven Spielberg. We dig into the then-impossible idea of mixing live-action and animation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, show some love to Forrest Gump, and examine some underrated gems like Death Becomes Her.But WTF Happened to Robert Zemeckis? In the 2000s, Zemeckis became a proponent of Motion Capture technology, leading to The Polar Express and Beowulf, movies which are a little uncanny valley if you revisit them today. Even if he's not quite the mega-watt hitmaker he once was, with films like Welcome to Marwen being disastrous, he's still capable of making gems like the fantastic Denzel Washington movie Flight. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Mathew Plale), narrated and edited by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into the director's life, legacy and future.

He was raised Jewish. A class clown in his youth, Deezen aspired to become a stand-up comedian; he moved to Hollywood within days of graduating high school in order to pursue a comedy career. As a stand-up comedian, Deezen performed at The Comedy Store and appeared on an episode of The Gong Show in the mid-1970s, only to be gonged by singer-songwriter Paul Williams. After a poorly-received act and having difficulty memorizing his routine, Deezen eventually decided to abandon stand-up and focus on acting. In 1977, Deezen landed his first role in the film Grease, playing nerdy student Eugene Felsnic. Following the commercial success of Grease, Deezen was cast in a series of comedy films, including Robert Zemeckis' I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Steven Spielberg's epic comedy 1941. By 1979, Deezen was in such demand that he was frequently obliged to decline some roles as he was already working: two such notable instances included the characters of Eaglebauer in Rock 'n' Roll High School and Spaz in Meatballs, both of which he turned down to appear in 1941. Throughout the early 1980s, Deezen appeared in several high-profile studio releases, including Midnight Madness (1980), Zapped! (1982) and WarGames (1983), as well as reprising the role of Eugene Felsnic in Grease 2 (1982), one of only seven actors from the original Grease to return for the sequel. In 1984, Deezen was cast in a major television role, playing the role of superintendent Eddie on the first season of the NBC sitcom Punky Brewster. After filming eight episodes, however, Deezen quit due to his discomfort while performing for a live audience and continuing difficulty in remembering his line Deezen eventually found full-time voice work on television in the mid-1990s, playing recurring characters on the animated series Grimmy, Duckman, Kim Possible and What's New, Scooby-Doo?, as well as guest spots on many others, including Johnny Bravo, Recess, and Darkwing Duck. His best-known voice-over character, however, is that of Mandark, the nemesis of the eponymous Dexter on Cartoon Network's Dexter's Laboratory, a role he played for the series' entire run from 1996 to 2003. Deezen also voiced the character on the TV special Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip and the video games Cartoon Network Racing and FusionFall. Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co

"Bisogna considerare i misteri della vita, come misteri da vivere" E' giunto il momento per una rassegna dedicata a uno dei più grandi maestri del cinema americano degli ultimi quarant'anni. Ecco a voi la sfolgorante carriera di Robert Lee Zemeckis, artefice di un cinema fatto per i suoi principali abitanti ovvero i sognatori. Partiamo dall'inizio di tutto, il primo lungometraggio diretto da Zemeckis e co-sceneggiato insieme a Bob Gale. "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" (il nostro "1964-Allarme a N.Y. arrivano i Beatles!") è una commedia scatenata e, a tratti, folle che vuole non solo raccontare la magica epoca della Beatlesmania ma anche ironizzare sull'ossessione che può raggiungere il pubblico verso un determinato fenomeno di costume. Justin and Ty delve into the biggest movement of British on American soil since the war of 1812. This time they didn't bring muskets and bayonets, they brought electric guitars and flowers instead! This invasion was a welcome one to be sure! Several big British rock bands had attempted the invasion before, and were quashed by American indifference. But John Lennon and the Beatles refused to go to America until they had a #1 hit there first. "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" topped the charts and so the Fab Four boarded a plane and landed to throngs from a manic crowd eager to devour their sounds. The Beatles were followed by several other great beloved bands like the Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, and Them. There has never been a music revolution of that magnitude since, though some movements have been great, like the grunge era. Justin adores the music from the British invasion, and regardless of where Ty stands with his personal taste, he has to admit that he respects the significance of the music from this era of history. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/about-what/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/about-what/support

Young Southpaw talks to American ‘English eccentric’ Anton Barbeau about ABBA, memories of lost songs, the bird lifestyle, meeting Graham Chapman, and so much more.  Listen to new record ‘Manbird’ at https://antonbarbeau.bandcamp.com/album/manbird http://www.antonbarbeau.com/ https://antonbarbeau.bandcamp.com/ @antonbarbeau  Young Southpaw: What made you fall in love with music as a kid, do you remember?   Anton Barbeau: Well, yeah, back to The Beatles. My parents had five or six Beatles records, plus John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ when I was growing up. I was born in ’67, about a month before ‘Sgt. Pepper’ came out, so I’m sure I was hearing Beatles before I was even born, and I’m sure I heard ‘Sgt. Pepper’ when it was first out, even though I was only a wee baby. But yeah, The Beatles. My earliest memory is crawling around through my parents collection, trying to find the one that had ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’. That was my favourite song, from age zero.   YS: You get compared to Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, and XTC a lot. Are you fans of those guys?  AB: Oh, I am, very much so. Huge influences. It’s funny cause I’ve sort of found ways of connecting, if not directly to the artists, to those who have worked with them. So that’s been a funny little part of my career story in the past few years. I had a band in England called Three Minute Tease, which included Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor who were in The Egyptians and in Soft Boys. And I’ve also worked with Kimberley Rew. We did a gig once, Three Minute Tease, Andy, Morris, and myself, with Matthew Seligman, who we lost earlier this year to COVID. He sat in with us as well. So that world, the Robyn Hitchcock world, is definitely something I’ve dipped more than a few toes into. Robyn’s a huge influence as a songwriter. Maybe not so much anymore, because I went through the period of, when upon discovering his music it made perfect sense to me. It was sort of the idealized version of what I wish, of what I was trying to do, or something like that. So I aspired to that. These days, like I said, it’s ABBA and Fleetwood Mac. But Robyn Hitchcock’s a big influence. And XTC of course. I did end up working with Colin Moulding, on a couple things. That was wonderful. I supported Julian Cope on dates on his 2011 and 2012 tours and that was amazing! That’s a dream come true.

We're back with a new episode, and we're talking about who's got the best bridge! What's a bridge, you might ask? Why, it's only that part of the song that bridges the verses or a verse and chorus together. James and David are going to walk across those bridges in today's #SongFight on Track Meet! Shock World Service #043 Genius is a Weapon by Neil Higgins 25/11/2011 London, United Kingdom Almost all the tracks in this mix were released between 1980-82. The outside world seemed to be full of confusion & danger: huger strikes, riots, hostages, assassinations, glue-sniffing & imminent nuclear wipeout. That paranoia & anger fed into the music, giving it this edge of urgency & anger. 1. Cabaret Voltaire - The Voice of America' (Intro) / The Cure - Three Almost all the tracks in this mix were released between 1980-82, with maybe a couple from 1979. The artists I love from this period were fusing punk, funk, reggae, disco and electronics, all in an un-self-conscious way, because the rules hadn't been written yet. Also, in the early 80s the outside world seemed to be full of confusion and danger: huger strikes, riots, hostages, assassinations, glue-sniffing and imminent nuclear wipeout. All that paranoia and anger fed into the music, giving it this edge of urgency and anger. If things continue to fall aaprt maybe we will get some of that back into music? Just a thought. 2. Virgin Prunes - Ulakanakulot Probably Ireland's leading art-goth-pagan-death-cult band of the early 80s. Actually, the only one. In conservative, catholic Ireland of the time the Prunes were an unbelievably confusing and unsettling presence. Gotta admire them for that. This track is from their debut LP ‘If I Die, I Die' and is a suitably sinister groove. 3. David Byrne & Brian Eno - Regiment In 1980 Brian Eno took a couple of months out from basically inventing ambient music to make the ‘My Life in a Bush of Ghosts' album with David Byrne. Cutting and pasting tape loops of African and Arabic vocals and percussion with found-sounds from US TV news and radio evangelists over edgy punk-funk grooves. In the process they pretty much invented a whole new approach to music production, one that paved the way for an era of leftfield sample-based music. The fusion of world music, electronics and dislocated voices sounds like an obvious formula now, but this was 1981 – there were no samplers, MIDI, or laptops. The sampled words ‘… his insane desire to use his genius as a weapon...' are referring to the silent movie director Erich von Stroheim, but they kind of capture the spirit of the music here. 4. James White & the Blacks - Irresistible Impulse If anyone deserves the ‘punk-funk' label, it's got to be James Chance. Another slice of danceable but menacing New York no-wave funk. From the 1982 Album Sax Maniac. I saw him live in London a couple of years ago and he was still on fire… 5. The Slits - Heard it Through the Grapevine ‘Heard it Through the Grapevine' was the b-side of The Slits first single in 1979 and follows a grand tradition of sarcastic punk versions of soul and funk classics. This slice of cynical joy mixes soul, reggae, pop and punk and delivers proper girl power. In fact there were loads of fantastic, strong and edgy female-led bands around at the time. What happened? 6. Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead Goth-Dub-Horror-Disco starts and ends with ‘Bela Lugosi's Dead' This classic was released in 1979 as a 6-and-a-half minute 12” with a disco-style arrangement, dub effects and unashamed Hammer House lyrics. It should be ridiculous but somehow it's majestic. Undead! Undead! Undead! 7. Yoko Ono - Walking on Thin Ice Yoko Ono ‘Walking on Thin Ice'. Legend has it that it was while returning from the final studio session for this track that John Lennon was shot and killed, and he died clutching the master tapes. The discordant lead guitar on this song was Lennon's last performance – a long journey from ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand'. It gives Yoko's great song a whole extra level of mystery and significance. ‘When our hearts return to ashes – It'll be just a story…'
