With so many books out there, it's easy to get paralyzed and confused as to what to read. Today, I'm going to share the top ten books I would take with me if congress declared a law that said people can only own ten books. These are the books that have changed my life. The Top Ten Books for the growing Christian. Leaders are readers. Everything you want to become or achieve by definition is something you will have to learn to do or imitate from someone else. The quickest path to get there is to read and imitate those who have gone before you. John Wooden, who coached his UCLA team to 10 NCAA basketball championships, was a reader. On the day of his middle school graduation, his father gave him $2 and a card with the following advice: 1. Be true to yourself. 2. Help others. 3. Make each day your masterpiece. 4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible. 5. Make friendship a fine art. 6. Build a shelter against a rainy day. 7. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day. This is a great list, but I want to concentrate on item four: Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible. Here are a couple of things to note about this advice. First, he mentions good books. There are a ton of books that aren't worth reading. You know you are reading a good book if the following criteria are met: · You can read and reread it · It inspires you to action, change or imitation · It moves you · It typically focuses on principles that are useful in a variety of situations · It's often been around a while and has a reputation for being good Secondly, Joshua Wooden highlights the Bible as especially unique. The Bible meets all of the above criteria while adding: · A clear path to eternal life · How to know who God is, what he is like and what he expects of us · Comfort, encouragement and guidance in life Reading won't necessarily make you a great coach, but it will increase your chances of making this life count. I'd like to give you my top ten list of good books. These are books that I've read and reread many times. I've read many books and these have impacted me greatly. I will classify them by genre. · The Bible. This goes without saying, but there is a reason we should be reading, rereading and memorizing this on a daily basis. If we don't read anything else, this is the one book that we need to know cover to cover. 1. Spiritual Book: “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas A'Kempis a. This is my most read book outside of the Bible. “Spiritual Formation” is a buzzword in Christian circles today. A'Kempis wrote the book on spiritual formation 500 years ago. Written by a man living in a monastery, it is filled with scripture and insight into living a godly and holy life. I can't read it without getting completely convicted about the state of my interior life, motivations and sinful nature. Two bits of advice when starting this book: i. Read it one chapter a day along with your Bible. This is a book for meditation and consideration not rapid consumption ii. Get past the age and religious bias against this book. Yes, he was a Catholic monk. Yes, it's an old book. However, human nature doesn't change and the issues he deals with in this book are as relevant as the day it was originally printed. 2. Time management and priorities, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller a. Keller is the founder of Keller Williams Real Estate Corporation. He helps us get out of the weedy third soil by advising his readers to daily ask themselves the question, “What's the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” b. This book will enable you to overcome paralysis caused by too much information, distraction, busyness and other demands that can overwhelm us. 3. Personal Growth: “How to fail at almost everything and still win big” by Scott Adams a. Adams created the Dilbert cartoon series. In this book he shares about his life, medical challenges, setbacks and successes and offer suggestions on how to find a path for growth that fits how God made you. Some of the ideas that I go back to over and over again: i. Develop your “Talent Stack.” You may not have legendary talent in one area, but through grit and determination you can become really good at five or more skills. The combination of five “pretty talented” areas is remarkable. ii. Use affirmations. I find this advice an updated and repackaged version of Jesus' teaching on faith in Mark 11:24, “…Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” 4. How to build your faith level and become more optimistic. “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale. a. Peale wrote this book while working as a church minister. He borrows scripture from the Bible and creates a “crossover” book that helps non-disciples apply Jesus' teaching on faith to tackle real world problems like making money, getting promoted or anything else. As a disciple, this book has incredible value in both the spiritual and secular parts of life. Since Jesus said, “According to your faith will it be done to you” in Matthew 9:29, we should be constantly looking for methods of increasing our faith in an increasingly cynical world. Peale offers sound advice on how to build a firm foundation of faith. 5. Books on Relationship Building. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. a. This is the GOAT (greatest of all time) when it comes to building and developing relationships. Your Friendships, business relationships, family relationships and relationships with non-believers will start multiplying and deepening when you put Carnegie's lessons into practice. b. Carnegie's advice to be interested in people and ask questions is worth the price of the book alone. This trait is completely missing in about 90% of the people I meet and leads to dead, one-way relationships. Assimilate this one tip and you will immediately distinguish yourself as a friend magnet. 6. Books on money and money management. “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas Stanley. a. This was a tough one. There are a lot of books on money out there. I've never been great at handling or saving money. In order to compensate for this weakness, I've read a ton of books on money management. This area is an example of how knowing more won't make you better, it's all about practicing time-honored principles. The reason why I like Stanley's book is that he devoted his life to understand how rich people get rich. The paradoxical message is that most rich people got that way by not acting “rich.” They save money from every paycheck, never pay more than $10 for a bottle of wine, and don't drive fancy cars. Instead of reading mind-numbing insight on the benefits of hedge-fund investing, it helped me identify and imitate the key traits of people who were better at money management than me. It's paid off for me. 7. Fantasy books. “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy by JRR Tolkien a. My mom was an English teacher and she would bring home books from her classes for me to read at home. I became a fantasy fan by reading from Robert Heinlein and JRR Tolkein. I remember reading “The Hobbit” and falling in love with fantasy. Upon rereading Tolkien's work, I'm struck by how writers have gotten much better over the last 100 years. Tolkien needed a good editor to cut out entire chapters of his trilogy. Peter Jackson did a great job reducing the trilogy to its essential content in his movie series. However, the Lord of the Rings is still the gamechanger when it comes to fantasy. All other books are measured against his groundbreaking “world-building” novel. Another side benefit is the messianic theme running throughout the book. This book honors courage, masculinity, sacrifice and brotherhood in an age where these qualities are often under attack. 8. Biography. “The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt” by Edmund Morris. a. I've read so many great biographies that this was hard to choose. Morris highlights Roosevelt's journey from sickly, weakling childhood to robust, vigorous, and courageous manhood. In the past, people learned from biography as the primary source of instruction. I couldn't help but be both inspired and called higher by Roosevelt's conscious labor to become a better man. Here is his counsel on how to overcome fear: i. “at the outset almost every man is frightened when he goes into action, but that the course to follow is for the man to keep such a grip on himself that he can act just as if he was not frightened. After this is kept up long enough it changes from pretense to reality, and the man does in very fact become fearless by sheer dint of practicing fearlessness when he does not feel it.” 9. Books on mindset. “As a man thinketh” by James Allen a. The King James Version of Proverbs 23:7 reads “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” This book develops the idea that our outer, physical world is simply a reflection of our inner, mental or spiritual world. Nothing is more relevant for a strong disciple than this concept. Paul echoes the importance of taking charge of our thought life in 1 Corinthians 10:5, “…we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” This book went on to form the foundation for so many other books like “Think and Grow Rich” and “The Secret.” Each one is built on the idea that if you change your thinking, you will change your life. If you don't like to read, you'll like this one. It's a tiny book. 10. Books on Marriage. “The Seven Principles for making marriage work” by John Gottman. a. This book is the best of all books on marriage. He studied marriage in his “love lab” and found out how to predict whether a couple would be stay married or divorce with over 90% accuracy. The principles of strong marriages and the traits of weak marriages offer a pathway to a life of ever-strengthening love. One of the primary triggers for me to seek God originally was my desire to have a successful marriage. The combination of God, God's word and advice from books like Gottman's have enabled me to exceed my most fanciful wishes. 11. Other notable mentions a. Any book by Brian Tracy. His books repeat over and over, but his best is “Maximum Achievement.” You will hear echoes from this book in his other books. b. I would hate to be limited to only ten books. I read voraciously and don't want to give the impression you should cap your reading at only a few. But I'd like to leave you with a few more thoughts: i. It's better to choose a few “good books” and reread them than to simply hope the next book will offer a silver bullet for your problem. ii. Find a way to take in more reading. Many people are limited by their reading ability or lack of desire to read. There are so many ways to take in good reading. Chief in my mind is audiobooks. Even if you don't like reading, you can gain the benefit of books simply by listening to them read to you. Find a way to love reading.
The adults were so weak they had to be carried off the shipwreck onto shore… Today, I lead the diabetes business in Medtronic, a global leader in medical devices. The business is about 2.3 billion, with over 5,000 employees. The story of “the person most likely to rule the planet in the future”20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:I find myself not in the mainstream part of these companies, but having a big impact on the future of those companies.A bit of a nomad - three million miles of travel approximately, 3 continents, 3 children, 3 C-suite roles, 7 cities and 10 addresses. My background is in software, in tech, Microsoft was really formative, doing all things on consumer software and services, the precursor to cloud technologies. I then joined Tyco electronics, and then Honeywell recruited me to be its first Chief Commercial Officer, and then I was promoted to lead the software business.A lot of people say [about Medtronic] “Well, that's very different from some of the industrial companies, as well as the software world” and the funny thing is, the concepts are exactly the same.I used to think working on software apps was really exciting and was going to change the world... Let's say, if you make a game on the iPhone, is that as thrilling as applying your brain power and your energy towards something like the area of diabetes, where you can really help people's lives? It's just not!The biggest challenge… I think actually having kids and having a career is a juggling act for everybody, it always comes back to the question of how much should you work.ON TOPIC: Grit and leadership, rags to riches, the making of a leaderWhen you grow, life gives you certain tools depending on how you get brought up. And when you grow up poor, you get a lot of tools. I had to support my mother, I had to find a way to go to college. So I had to think about how do I make a lot of money while going to school. At 16 I started a business and after about a year I had a hundred students. So I converted the garage, my bedroom and the living room into classrooms and I taught all weekend. I made more money doing this than when I got my first job at McKinsey. It takes courage to confront necessity and accept that bad things happen. Half my life I was living in poverty or close to financial ruin and I missed out on a childhood, but every day I picked myself up...Changing the events that are outside you is not possible, but you can change how you view them, that's possible. So why don't you go and focus on changing what's possible and I think to me those lessons help you deal with adversity.Don't be a poser, actually contribute, figure out what is your unique contribution, be really, really good, build your talent stack and then the opportunity will find you. You can compete by being political, by being self-promotional, but you're not really adding value and I want to go to bed every night knowing I did my best and contributed. It's helpful to have a personal board of directors, it's people that you trust and you've built relationships over time that can pull you back from the brink of your excesses or when you have blind spots.Cultivate relationships, do it because they're your friends or they're people you respect and admire, not because it helps you get ahead.ON TOPIC: Diabetes, medtech, health25% of healthcare is spent on diabetes, that's a lot, in the world. There's about 7 million people that have type 1 and type 2 insulin-dependent, that's a lot of people. If you then go to the broader type 2, you're talking about 200 million people that need some sort of medication. Innovation here is: you're putting something in someone's body.

In today's episode, we're rounding out January - the season of goal setting - with 4 of the most interesting and provocative paradigms that I have learned about when it comes to “success.” Collectively, they make up what I call a success mindset. The four topics and their sources: Growth Mindset - Mindset by Carol Dweck Passion is developed / Rare & valuable skills are the key - So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport You don't have to be the best at everything - Talent Stack by Scott Adams Success is chosen, every day, through intentional habits - High Performance Habits by Brendon Bruchard I find value in all of these messages, and there's a little bit more woowoo in me. So while I think all of these are true - with the central theme here being that you can create, develop, and choose success for yourself regardless of your starting point - there is some nuance. This “success mindset” when paired with your curiosity and interest and joy is where you'll see the most fulfillment. Instagram: @theheididawson www.heididawson.com My challenge to you this week. Take an inventory. Are the decisions you make every day adding to your COMFORT or are they adding to your TALENT STACK? Are you reading books that expand your mind or are you starting the latest Netflix series? Are you taking courses that exercises your brain or are you checking into social media for the 50th time? Are you doing something every day to make a life that excites you? Remember if you're feeling depressed..you are focusing on the past and if you're feeling anxious, youre focusing on the future. Finally, Everything begins moving in the effort of your attention. So find something that excites you, find something that lights you up, and if you already know what that is, don't give up, move towards that dream like your life depends on it, You don't have to be the smartest and you don't have to be the best but you can always be the one that doesn't give up. I love this quote by Chinese philosopher Loa Tzu: He said: “If you're depressed, you're living in the past. If you're anxious, you're living in the future, and if you are at peace, you're living in the present.” How often do we waste being present because we are thinking about something that happened in the past or we are worried about something that may happen in the future? This has been especially hard this year. We are all having to learn to pivot, to adjust, and to adapt. We all have had things cancelled, we've all had to adjust to things we may not like, and we have had to adapt in order to feel a little bit of normalcy. But through all that… There are things that can't be taken away from us. I get to choose how to look at something and no one can take that away from me. I get to choose to find the positive in even the most challenging times. And if you hear that and think…”year, right” well then what alternative are you leaving for yourself? Just give in to the hopelessness you feel in a situation? What good is that doing for you? We have to have our own backs oK? Your perception of things is everything. We all experience tough times that can be devastating, and often we have no control of circumstances like that….But we ALWAYS have control of how we choose to show up. How we choose to react. How we choose to think about something.

Admittedly the last 8 months have been rough on most of the world. Who could have imagined we’d be here, in a real-life pandemic? It’s straight out of a sci-fi movie. We’ve been dealing with restrictions, lockdowns, isolation, and businesses closing, evolving, and changing on a dime. It hasn’t been easy... But believe it or not, right NOW is one of the greatest opportunities in human history to actually amplify your capabilities using a concept Dan Sullivan and Mike Koenigs call “The Talent Stack.” Today on the podcast they'll let you in on exactly what “The Talent Stack” is and how you can use it to your advantage, but want they really want to share with you is how to make someone's dream come true by being able to create “stacks” of value that have higher perceived value than you could ever imagine. There are a few ways of thinking about this concept. First, imagine if you had the ability to stack value in a way to give your client, what feels like to them, more choices when in fact what you're doing is putting them inside a container so they can only choose you. It’s a way of thinking about your talents through the perspective of, how do you take value, put it in a container, then position it so you can charge 10 times more for what you're doing by changing the way your prospective clients think. Here's a little backstory to give you some perspective. Recently Mike worked with a new client who designs supplement ingredients and proprietary, patented ingredients. (in the supplement world, if you get someone to use your ingredient, you get paid royalties) In his case, his products have been in billions of dollars of different products and services. Come to find out, he’s been scheduled to be on the Joe Rogan podcast! (for anyone who isn't familiar with Joe Rogan, he has about 10 million subscribers on YouTube and hundreds of millions of downloads. It's in the top three of all podcasts in the world right now.) It just so happens that Mike's fantasized about being on the Joe Rogan podcast himself and he knew that his client being on Joe's show was going to change his life FOREVER. Mike's studied Joe and his show. He’s a guy who's very specific. He wants great guests but you've really got to earn your way into his world and some of that has to do with having shared experiences, shared relationships, and shared values. So Mike and his client sat down and watched some of Joe’s highest-rated episodes that had to do with personal development, personal growth, food, or nutrition and one thing that happens on Joe's podcast with a great guest is they come in with props and gifts. One big idea Mike came up with for his client’s appearance on Joe’s show was to order him a custom set of knives with a unique quote (that Joe said) on each one because Joe's a hunter and eats what he kills. Hunting is a spiritual experience for Joe and this unique gift shows that he’s done his homework and has a shared value. A deeper, more significant concept is an “artifact.” To explain... Mike's client is in the business of creating different kinds of supplements and nutritional products that you consume. So what they designed was a whole bunch of “stacks” that are good for you and meaningful to Joe. (like a longevity or gamer stack.) When Mike's client walks in with a box of super fascinating stacks, designed specifically for Joe that aren't available anywhere else… how do you think Joe and his audience will react? It naturally shows off Mike's client’s talents and skill set to the world and creates a deep bond and connection with Joe. It's hyper personalized and packaged in a way that’s meaningful. Mike's client truly has a goal to improve the quality of mankind and to develop a relationship with Joe that is not manipulative or yucky. He wants to be asked back someday, right? These stacks will help him accomplish those goals. To hear the rest of the podcast where they go deep into the definitions of “stacks...
What's your "talent stack" going into 2021? If you are building your professional services/ finance career - or planning on pitching to raise capital for a business deal or to land a whale - do you have the goods? Today I talk about building a talent stack. Instead of being the very best in one singular skill to be successful, we can instead be better than average with a unique combination of skills to create a sort of personal monopoly.
Hiroko (Hiro) Nishimura is a freelance technical instructor and content strategist in Maryland, United States. I got to know Hiro when I was enrolled into one of her LinkedIn learning courses "AWS for Non-Engineers", and I was so intrigued by how the learning experience was so refreshingly digestible that I felt compelled to look up Hiro online to find out what her background. What I discovered was Hiro’s incredible story of how she overcame incredible challenges to create her own career path, and I knew I just had to invite her onto the show. Hiro’s story is a great example of designing a career centred around her talent stack and unique life experiences, but her journey leading up to freelance career path involved adapting her mindset, adapting how she learned new skills - and it was through learning out loud or learning in public - as Hiro put it.- meant that her work was noticed and changed her trajectory and empowered her to take the leap into design her own portfolio career. https://awsnewbies.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/hirokonishimura/ For more talent stack resources visit https://www.yishanchan.co/links
Originally coined by Scott Adams (creator of the Dilbert comic), the idea of a "talent stack" is that you can combine ordinary skills until you have enough of the right kind to be extraordinary. It’s the idea that you can stand out from the crowd in how you create value by having a unique stack of skills that no one else has. You’re probably wondering... is my talent stack just a list of skills stacked up together? How do I summarise my diverse experiences in a concise way that communicates value? I wanted to expand on Scott Adams's definition of a talent stack, to help you: Describe how you add value with your talent stack Identify what further learning you might like to consider to diversify your skillset & make an impact on the future you envision. This episode was inspired by a question that came through on The Flipchart community last week from Yishan Chan, host of the Talent Stack podcast. She asked, “Hi Leanne, is there a short podcast episode I can share with my workplace on why we need to think differently about how Zoom "show and tell" sessions are run?” Today I share my approach, mindset, key considerations and structure, on how to deliver a 60 min virtual training session, or workshops - that boosts interaction and engagement. The methods I share on today's show are simple - no use of difficult technology, just simple ways to mix things up and keep you audience front and centre. I also hope this episode inspires you to share with me your approach to 30-60minute workshop delivery. What great things do you bring in, to create interaction? Also, you've heard it here first! In this episode, I explore 3 future proof skills and how these can help guide you in deciding how to evolve your talent stack. 1. Transdisciplinarity - the ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines. 2. Learning how to learn - inspired by Dom Price from Atlassian 3. Based on the fantastic article by Dilbert Author, Scott Adams.
We toss around the words “potential” and “talent” pretty freely in business but do those things really matter? Is natural talent a real thing and is it the difference between success and failure? The answer is yes, it’s a real thing, and no, it’s not the only difference between success and failure. That’s the talent myth: the misguided belief that success is based solely on natural talent. In reality, most people’s lack of accomplishment has more to do with a lack of drive than a lack of talent. Truth is, you probably have more talent than you’re giving yourself credit for, you’re just not exploiting it. That’s where the Talent Stack comes in — piling up your B+ skills so they all work together. In this episode we’ll tap your talent stack to make you formidable!

As the world gets smaller it also gets more complex. Technology is bringing people closer together while at the same time distancing others. To navigate this landscape requires a particular set of communication skills. Skills that you acquire and perfect over a lifetime. Some of these skills are as old as humankind. Others have been brought on by the advent of technology and require new learnings. They're skills that, when stacked up on top of one another, can turn you into a Master Communicator. To be an effective communicator in the digital era you have to develop a Communications Stack. Scott Adams of Dilbert fame developed what he calls The Talent Stack, which is loosely defined as the set of individual skills you acquire to make you unique in the marketplace. We can apply this model to communications too. Acquiring communication skills and stacking them on top one another can mean the difference between success and failure. Good communication is important regardless of what you do in life. You need it to get on with other people, to make your case in disagreements and to help you put forward your wants and needs. The difference in good communication and bad communication can mean losing a relationship, losing a business contract or being misunderstood. The top 10 skills you need to effectively communicate now and in the future. Collectively these skills can help you become a Master Communicator and futureproof you for the increasingly complex world ahead. And they are? 1. Written communication Despite moving into a more visual-based media world, mastery of the written word will remain as important as ever. People will always read and the demand for well-written content will continue. Structuring sentences well, knowing how to craft an article, how to write up an interview and how to create written content for each social platform will continue to be an in-demand skill for the foreseeable future. 2. Verbal communication Knowing how to articulate yourself when speaking is important for all walks of life. Some people are naturally adept at public speaking whereas others have to work on it. Demosthenes of Athens, an ancient Greek, was known as a master orator but that wasn't always the case. He was naturally weak both verbally and physically so as a young man worked on both his speaking skills and bodily strength. Nothing can invoke more emotion both in you and your audience than verbal communication. Churchill was right, learn oratory skills and you too can become a king (or queen). 3. Nonverbal communication Did you know 65 percent of all interpersonal communication is nonverbal? What your body says is often more important than what comes out of your mouth. Understanding nonverbal communication not only allows you to read other people but can also help you know how to present yourself when dealing with others. If you want to remain open, don't fold your arms or point your feet away from the other person. If you don't want to seem nervous, don't rub your body or grab the back of your neck with your hand. Read the best book on nonverbal communication, What Every BODY is Saying by ex-FBI agent, Joe Navarro, to understand what people say is often not what they're thinking. 4. Social psychology If you want to communicate better with other people, you have to understand what motivates and moves them. To do this requires a basic understanding of social psychology. Why do people conform to a certain group? Do they aspire to social status? Have they had any experiences in the past which affect how they think now? You don't have to be a Freud or a Jung, but some basic principles will allow you to understand the other person and ultimately be able to help them. Charlie Munger's The Psychology of Human Misjudgement is a great place to start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqzcCfUglws 5. Emotional intelligence

Some interesting facts about Chris include that he started college as an Art Major due to his love of Dragon Ball-Z as a child. When Chris made it to college, things changed. For a few reasons, he decided not to stick with Art as a major, but his art skills continued to develop. This is a concept that I talk about often in my posts and discussions on the Talent Stack, so it was awesome to see it clearly in his experience. So, how does Talent Stacking play a roll in Chris' podcasting business? Well, he designs the graphics and website for much if not all of Popcorn Finance! He is awesome at design and it shows. The takeaway for YOU, House of FI, is definitely to use the talent stack you have cultivated to this point to pursue the stuff you love. Combining his art skills with his finance degree has led to a very successful and fun themed podcast. What could your talent stack lead to for you? Chris' Big Personal Finance Mistake So, when you major in finance, you never make personal finance mistakes, right? Not so fast - we have heard it time and again that people in accounting, finance, banking, the credit industry, fall into the same financial traps as everyone else because of the lack of financial education. Chris was no exception. We take a deep dive into the stressful pressure Chris felt with he realized the true weight of the debt he and his wife found themselves under. Listen to find out how they got rid of the debt, AND the method they use to this day that KEEPS THEM OUT OF THE DEBT. College For Free!?! It's arguably the Holy Grail of the FI world: Going to college without student loan debt! We all know the story of how Wendy and I took on major student loan debt in order to secure our employment in Law, Nursing and Accounting. If you don't remember our stories, you can hear Wendy's here and mine here. What a different time we would have right now had we avoided the 6 figures in student loan debt? Well, Chris was smart and or lucky enough to do just that. Listen to his episode to find out how he made his way through undergrad without student loan debt to speak of by listening to his episode. Chris Browning on the Final Questions: Buy something that is more quality than cheap so that it lasts. His most recent purchase - mobile podcast gear such as zoom h6 - can record on a sd card but can add 6 mics. It’s your money, you don’t have to impress everyone. Nice cars, fancy restaurants, big house - you don’t have to impress anyone - you are both ending up outspending each other to impress each other - endless cycle. Live within your means, at the end of the day you will have what’s in your bank account.
