Ep 42 - More-Than-Human Worlding: Analysis and Exploration of Farm Animal Sanctuaries, World-Building and Speculative Design, with Dr Madi Mañetto Quick, Part 2.In episode 42 of the Anthrozoology Podcast we join Dr. Madi Mañetto Quick, for the second part of a discussion on her PhD research which explored the narratives of farmed animals, focusing on farms and sanctuaries. In this episode Madi discusses her PhD research on speculative design in the context of farm animal sanctuaries and farms. She explained her use of a speculative co-design workshop that included humans, animals, and land, aiming to equalise beings in sanctuaries or farms. Despite not conducting pilot workshops, she explored imaginative scenarios with her supervisors. Her work emphasises multi-species design, highlighting human-animal relationships and the impact of design on non-human animals. She also touched on the challenges of captive freedom in sanctuaries and the complexities of balancing animal freedom with human convenience. Future aspirations include collaborative research in anthrozoology.Podlet GuestDr Madi Mañetto Quickm.manettoquick@gmail.comhttps://orcid.org/0009-0004-9859-0682Please subscribe to get notified about our next podcast!Follow us on X: @TheAnthrozoopodFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/anthrozoopod/ Follow us on TikTok @anthrozoology_To access audio versions please our official Website: https://anthrozoopod.wixsite.com/anthrozoopod PodCrew Dr. Kris Hill PhD Candidate, University of Exetertinehill@gmail.com https://katzenlife.wordpress.com/ Dr. Michelle Szydlowskims835@exeter.ac.ukwww.internationalelephants.org@intl_elephants Sarah Oxley Heaney PhD Candidate, University of Exetersh750@exeter.ac.uk www.kissingsharks.com/References:Donna J. Izzy Horrocks joins Mark Longbottom on the Purposely Podcast to discuss the Aotearoa Lifecourse Fund, a new charitable foundation she has co-founded with Jimmy McLaughlan. The fund aims to find, fund, and scale evidence-based programmes that help children and young people develop essential lifecourse skills. Over the next five years, the foundation plans to invest $10million, raised from individuals, foundations, and businesses that share their belief in the importance of life skills for young people. While they are still in the early stages of fundraising, they have already secured a lead investor committed to making a difference. The fund will act as a grant-maker, supporting charities and organisations working with children and young people. It follows a venture philanthropy model, combining funding with hands-on support for social enterprises and charities. Izzy's experience spans both delivering and funding programs that create social and economic impact. Her perspective was shaped early on by time in Ethiopia and Kenya, where she witnessed the power of local trust and community-led initiatives. This continues to influence her work in New Zealand, where strong partnerships with local charities and leaders are at the heart of the fund's mission. While Izzy and her team draw inspiration from global initiatives, she emphasises that the new foundation will be deeply rooted in New Zealand's unique bicultural identity. Integrating both Pākehā and Te Ao Māori—the Māori worldview and its practices—will be central to their approach, shaping how they engage, support founders, and drive meaningful change. With $5 million already secured and discussions ongoing with potential donors, the fund is progressing towards its target. Izzy's message to potential supporters is simple: by investing in effective programmes, the Aotearoa Lifecourse Fund will give New Zealand's next generation the opportunities they need to succeed.

More-Than-Human Worlding: Analysis and Exploration of Farm Animal Sanctuaries, World-Building and Speculative Design, with Dr Madi Mañetto Quick, Part 1.In episode 41 of the Anthrozoology Podcast we join Dr. Madi Mañetto Quick , for part one of two on a discussion on her PhD research which explored the narratives of farmed animals, focusing on farms and sanctuaries. In this episode Madi discusses how she explored the interpretive framework of equalising human and non-human characters in stories. Madi emphasises a non-black-and-white approach and “stays with the trouble” in conversations around vegetarianism, veganism and livestock farming. She introduced the concept of "necro care," where killing animals is seen as an act of care in sanctuaries. Madi also highlighted the importance of including global perspectives and visual analysis in future research. Her thematic analysis revealed themes on land depiction, killing methods, and individual vs. mass animal portrayals.Podlet GuestDr Madi Mañetto Quickm.manettoquick@gmail.comhttps://orcid.org/0009-0004-9859-0682Please subscribe to get notified about our next podcast!Follow us on X: @TheAnthrozoopodFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/anthrozoopod/ Follow us on TikTok @anthrozoology_To access audio versions please our official Website: https://anthrozoopod.wixsite.com/anthrozoopod PodCrew Dr. Kris Hill PhD Candidate, University of Exetertinehill@gmail.com https://katzenlife.wordpress.com/ Dr. Michelle Szydlowskims835@exeter.ac.ukwww.internationalelephants.org@intl_elephants Sarah Oxley Heaney PhD Candidate, University of Exetersh750@exeter.ac.uk www.kissingsharks.com/References:Donna J. Something special for the holidays! In this December's two bonus mini episodes, Daillen and Megan reflect on BeDo's recent workshops delivered in partnership with the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences (SGSSS).What does it mean to build rapport with research participants? In this episode, we explore academic and practical understandings of the rapport-building process, and the ethical dilemmas embedded therein. Our original workshop curriculum on Building Rapport proposes a compassionate, trauma-informed approach to data collection, and addresses researchers working in the field as well as those conducting remote research. We look at power asymmetries and the inevitable hierarchy of 'doing' rapport; verbal and non-verbal forms of communication; how our nervous systems influence one another through processes of co-regulation; and applied techniques to establish trust and make participants feel seen and heard, including reflective listening and more.RESOURCES:We draw upon King & Horrocks' (2010) defintion of rapport, as well as the power assymetries inherent in the rapport-building process discussed in Heintzman et al (1993). Oakley (1981) addresses the problematic, history of rapport building and its reputation for being hierarchical and non-reciprocal. IT CAME FROM AQUARIUS RECORDS is a feature-length documentary about the SF-based independent record store, Aquarius Records. Having closed in 2016 after 47 years, this small apartment-sized store championed local, underground, independent, and challenging music to the masses - most memorably with their infamous bi-weekly, college essay-length, new-release lists. This doc has interviews with the aQ owners dating back to 1970, other record store owners from around the world, musicians, label heads, music journalists, and INTENSE music collectors. Interviewees include Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Bruce Ackley, John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), Ty Segall, and Liz Harris (Grouper).Aquarius Records influenced and enriched countless peoples' musical tastes with their curated selections - but this film also shows the realities of an indie record store trying to survive in an increasingly difficult market of brick-and-mortar music shops, especially in the ever-changing and price-gouging Mission District of SF. Six years in the making, the film has a very personal angle, with lots of behind-the-scenes footage (and drama) that shows both the joy and excruciating stress that comes with running — and closing — a store like this.Upcoming screenings:Oct 4th 6 pm Los Angeles City College w Howie KleinOct 6th Tucson Film and Music FestivalNovember 1st, 7pm Nitehawk Cinema, Williamsburg BrooklynFilm screening, followed by a moderated Q+A, with:Kenneth ThomasBrian Turner (The Brian Turner Show, WFMU)Jeremy DeVine (Founder / President of Temporary Residence Records)Jon Fine (Bitch Magnet, Author of Your Band Sucks: What I Saw at Indie Rock's Failed Revolution (but Can No Longer Hear))Emil Amos (Grails, Om, Holy Sons)Moderated by Anna Lopez (Temporary Residence Records, Union Pool)Nov 4th & 5th Doc Utah St. George, UtahKenneth Thomas is a teacher and filmmaker from Arcata, California. Featuring over a dozen multi-camera live concert shoots and 20 interviews about independent heavy metal music culture, the film has screened in over two dozen film and music festivals on every continent (except Antarctica) and is currently being independently distributed. I'm joined by Kat Horrocks, a Certified Mindset & Manifestation Coach and Founder of Put Yourself First, a podcast and community dedicated to empowering women worldwide to put themselves first and manifest a life even better than their vision board. Kat believes that when women prioritize themselves, everything else starts to fall into place. We unpack what it really means to put yourself first, why it's so important, and tools to start living your truth. Kat and I reflect on what life was like when we put on the ‘good girl' façade and struggle with people-pleasing tendencies. We talk about learning how to be okay prioritizing your own happiness at the cost of disappointing other people and how to stop internalizing feedback that doesn't align with your path. We've both been able to recognize that oftentimes, people who doubt our decisions are responding from a place of deep care and it's not necessarily helpful to cut them out of your life. Kat shares some non-violent communication strategies for maintaining healthy relationships and upholding your boundaries. We also get into the main mindset blocks that she sees women struggle with when it comes to taking action and moving the needle on their goals. Kat illustrates the possibilities for women who put themselves first and highlights some of the amazing transformations that she's witnessed. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, or on your favorite podcast platform. Topics Covered: What inspired Kat to have ‘put yourself first' as her main message and modality for supporting women Why putting yourself first is actually selfless, not selfish What it looks like when a woman puts herself first Taking responsibility for how you react to someone's opinion of your life Coming to terms with the fact that even when you're trying to make everyone else happy, there's always going to be people who disapprove, judge, or just don't get it The complexity around fear of success Guest Info: Follow Kat on Instagram Learn more on Kat's Website Listen and subscribe to the Put Yourself First podcast Special Offer: Join me for The EMERGE Experience (August 20th + 21st) Follow Me: Find me on Instagram Visit my website Join The Empowered Feminine Facebook Group Embody Your Feminine Bundle Empowered Feminine Morning Ritual
Looking around the world, one of the most under-owned asset classes after years of underperformance is emerging markets. And one of the least understood and appreciated at this particular time is Asia, especially China. Once a darling of investors, it has lost favor for geopolitical, political, and business reasons. So what better time to delve into Asia than now? On this week's program, we will be joined by Robert Horrocks, Ph.D. and Chief Investment Officer of Matthews Asia, one of the first American mutual funds to focus solely on the region. Horrocks will bring us up to speed on China's economy and markets and the other Asian markets he deems worthy of our attention. Of particular interest to me is how to invest in this fast-growing region while minimizing China's powerful political risks. WEALTHTRACK Episode 1904 broadcast on July 15, 2022.
