In our previous episode we introduced Rich Hanson, Drew Westen and Amy Chua, experts in political anxiety and we'll call on them again in this episode. We'll examine what they have to say about emotional recovery to help us after this presidential election. Topics Covered: Post-Election Emotional Recovery Mindfulness and Self-Compassion: "taking in the good" focus Understanding Emotional Aftershocks Overcoming Tribalistic Divides Practical Self-Care Tips Reflection on National Resilience Here are 3 takeaways from our episode: 1. Drawing on Rick Hanson's guidance, we can use mindfulness practices like "taking in the good" to counter negative emotions and cultivate resilience. Emphasizing moments of positivity can help us stay grounded and manage post-election stress. 2. Drew Westen highlights that election-induced emotions don't simply fade but can linger as "emotional aftershocks." These residual feelings of anger, fear, or disappointment may affect relationships and public discourse, so it's important to be aware of these lingering tensions as people process the election's outcome. 3. According to Amy Chua, overcoming tribal divides involves recognizing diverse identities, fostering empathy, and working on shared community goals. This can be accomplished through local actions and open dialogue, allowing individuals to see each other as allies rather than adversaries, despite differing views. If you know the film Mean Girls you're no stranger to the concept that teen friendship groups can be fraught with problems. Whilst the film illustrates an extreme version of the issue any parent of girls will be familiar with the angst they can cause. With the help of the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman, Susie and I look at how you can coach your daughter positively through this tumultuous time. Below are top tips I gleaned from the book: Wiseman breaks down the structure of these groups into roles. The Queen Bee - the one who sets the tone for the group, and holds control. The Sidekick - the one who backs up the Queen Bee.The Banker - The one who collects information on members and uses it like a currency. The Messenger - The one who passes on information to try and make peace between girls. The Pleaser/Wannabe - The one who tries to please the others regardless of what she loses in the process. The Torn Bystander - The one who sees what's happening but feels powerless to say anything. The Target - The one who is undermined to consolidate power. The Champion - The one who manages to have friends in different groups.Power is wielded through teasing and gossip. The job of the parent is to help your daughter recognise what's happening and help her to strategise. How to do this:S: Stop and strategise.E: Explain to 'mean girl' what it was that she doesn't like about the way she has been treated.A: Affirm her right to exist without being humiliated.L: Lock in/Lock out of the relationship.Bill of Rights:· What does she want and need in a friendship? Trust, reliability..· What are her rights in a friendship? To be treated respectfully, with kindness and honesty.· What are her responsibilities? To treat her friends ethically.· What would a friend have to do or be like for her to end the friendship?· What are her friend's rights and responsibilities? To listen, even when it's not easy to hear.See www.culturesofdignity.com for more information.HOW TO GET YOUR TEEN TO KEEP GOING PAST THE FIRST HURDLE:Research by Seligman, Peterson and Duckworth. shows that the most successful people have seven key character traits.· Zest· Grit· Self-control· Hope-optimism· Curiosity· Gratitude· Social intelligenceGRIT: something we develop, mostly through encountering failures that aren't soul-crushing.RESILIENCE: is the ability to bounce back. The brain actually changes as a result of our experiences.Teach your teen that losing is something you do, not something you are. Mistakes are:ImpersonalSpecificShort term Self-acceptance: makes the person OK no matter what. Ways to coach self-acceptance:· Validate and coach through all their emotions.· Model and teach positive self-talk· Use mindfulness to notice – not judge – our children. Today we are continuing the new series; Love & Anxiety. Where we focus our attention is the second critical factor in how much anxiety we experience in our daily life. And, if love calms or causes anxiety. Many people struggle with looping negative thoughts or worrying. On a regular basis the mind is spinning out awful scenarios that usually are not even realistic. When we focus on scary thoughts, our primitive brain regions turn on stress hormones. These hormones cause internal sensations of high anxiety and stress. This causes a chain reaction of feeling more anxiety and this reinforces the negative thought focus. Rich Hanson’s research found our brain’s have a bias toward negative information. So we must work to focus on the positive aspects of our life.
Bobby & Matt James talk to Sammic sales rep Rich Hanson about his background and how he got involved with the company. They sample some of the new beers at newly opened Belltown brewing. They also welcome guest Marc Fifel.
DaVinci Challenge Princess Aliyah Pandolfi created the non-profit Kashmir World Foundation to integrate art, science, and technology for sustainable projects that transform social and economic structures. One of these projects is the DaVinci Challenge: Build a Drone Workshop, which helps students see robotic aircraft from a broader perspective. The workshop trains students and teachers in the design, fabrication, customization, and operation of small robotic aircraft. In this blend of science, technology, art, engineering, and math (STEM/STEAM), students learn about 3D printing, integration of robotic systems, and flying techniques as they build a quadcopter or hexacopter in an actively engaging hands-on and innovative workshop. In the first three days of the workshop, participants build a drone from components, then set up and test them. The fourth day is Flight Day where students perform ground testing and flight check and conduct first flights. At the awards ceremony, participants receive a Drone Operator Certificate. We attended a Flight Day on December 22, 2016, at the Northern Virginia Community College Loudoun Campus, and recorded a number of interviews: High school senior Michael C. Kronmiller discusses using UAVs for avalanche search and rescue in Nepal. For more, see his website Bullis-Kanjirowa STEM. Danny (age 12), Andrew (age 13), and Matthew (age 13) prepare their drone for its first hover. On the field with the boys' mothers as their sons made their first hover. Princess Aliyah Pandolfi talks about her projects: the overarching Kashmir World Foundation, the Wildlife Conservation UAV Challenge, which supports counter-poaching drones, and the DaVinci Challenge. Fadwah and Kitty talk about using drones in the STEM club at Langley High School to increase student involvement. You can provide financial support for this group through Computer Science teacher Susan Huebsch, 703-287-2892. Past workshop graduates Kevin Goth, his son Ben Goth, and Rob Klaus talk about their UAV project that utilizes a Raspberry Pi.
