Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We will go back and forth between these during our healing phase. Until the moral authority kicks in the we really can't recover. Shame is not guilt and is an assessment of our character traits. It can create relentless negative self talk and striving for perfectionism. We don't want to fail because it creates more shame. Before shame, embarrassment, which is a socially prescribed morals and norms, can often come. It's the fear of the judgement of others that can lead to the feeling of embarrassment.  Anger goes to action. It is the most powerful emotion to move differently. What we're not doing yet is having the emotional vocabulary for trauma and sitting with people's emotions. We can all experience trauma and have it impact us but it's what we do through the next phases, and the meaning we make of it, is how we get back to living healthy. Healing will eventually happen. She empowers families going through medical trauma with tools and tactics to help them navigate their new everyday normal. Her book, Thru the Fire, Empowering Parents of Kids with Cancer takes us through her journey once the pediatrician said her 3-year-old daughter Cecilia's lethargy and black circles under her eyes were childhood leukemia. She entered the panickedexistence of childhood cancer. Ceal had an 85 percent chance of surviving – that is, IF she made it through 2½ years of grueling treatment. Many women are raised to “be nice” and “be good”, and told “don't make a scene”. Women may be uncomfortable acknowledging a conflict so will be quiet or not address it directly, and there is less latitude for women to express conflict than is often afforded to men 3.   Humans are naturally (evolutionarily) wired to not like conflict, so that means our managers, bosses, and leaders probably don't like conflict. As a result conflict may pushed down or silenced, which can lead to unintentional consequences like blaming the people involved rather than learning from the situation.     In many of our past episodes we've uncovered aspects of emotions that can come up when we're stressed plus this month we're looking into the topic of conflict so today's episode goes into both these areas by looking at the political anxiety many of us may be experiencing around the upcoming Presidential election. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum we seem to all experiencing the same sensation of fear resulting from the polarization we're feeling. We thought it might be helpful to take a deeper look at this by exploring the what and the why when it comes to feeling this way, particularly as election day approaches. We'll call on 3 experts to guide us: Rick Hanson, Amy Chua, and Drew Westen Ph.D. Rick Hanson, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist and New York Times best-selling author.     So we like to cover books and have guests on the show to talk about emotions so we can be better leaders and based on the number of listens, you like to explore those topics with us. And there's one emotion we realized was suspiciously absent from our list. And that emotion was grief. As some of you know we recently lost the dog we've had the pleasure of loving and caring for, over the last 7 years, Caitlin. She was a very spicy 13 yo Frenchie and we are so grateful to her breeder who thought it would be great for her to live her later years with us. There were several things that the event of losing Cait, as we liked to call her, brought to the forefront as I went through the process of grieving.     183. Flying High: Jane Dyer's Journey of Fearlessness in the Face of Sexism

    Jane (Ballard) Dyer, Boomer, joins us to talk about fearlessness in the face of sexism.   Jane is a retired Air Force pilot and found her determination and grit to graduate from her training school even though her class voted to make sure no woman would graduate from her class. She broke the team goal with style and grace. Whoa!! Her story is amazing and will leave you much inspired. It is featured in the book, Fearless Female Leaders, written by Kathy McAfee and Rosemary Paetow which we featured in Ep. 182.   Topics covered in the Episode: Explicit sexism Taking the time to find confidence over nervousness Self-inflicted stress Dads' unconditional support Women empowering other women Importance of voting Selecting people to be on our team   Here are three takeaways from the episode:   1.    We will face the “naysayers” in life. It may take us time to dig deep to find that part of us where fearlessness is born. 2.    Jane's success during these 1980s led the way for so many more future female pilots. 3.   We can all lack confidence at times but we can remind ourselves, like Jane did, that we can do things even when we're afraid because we can breathe in the support of those who believe we can. More About Jane:   Jane Dyer retired from flying in 2017 as a Boeing 777 Captain.  She amassed over 10,000 accident-free hours at FedEx.  Prior to the B777, she was the Captain of the Airbus 300 and Boeing 727. Her flying career began in the USAF where she flew the KC135, an air-refueling aircraft, and instructed in the T-37, a primary trainer for the Air Force.    While in the Air Force, she met and married her husband, John Dyer.
