Babette Thomas is searching for artistic Black utopias. Thomas is the host of the latest season of SFMOMA's Raw Material podcast. In their series, "Visions of Black Futurity," they look at representation, identity and different historical through-lines in Black Art. Woven into the podcast is the story of curator Evangeline "EJ" Montgomery, a major player in the Black Arts scene. And EJ began her storied career in the 60s, right here in California, creating influential exhibits in the East Bay. This week on Rightnowish, we're featuring an episode that also dives into the stories of the famed Sci-Fi author Octavia Butler, landscape painter Richard Mayhew, and local visual artist Sydney Cain aka Sage Stargate (who has also been featured on Rightnowish). Throughout, Thomas hones in on the question, “Where will we host our Black art spaces of the future?” Listen to the full series on the "Raw Material" page.
In this episode, we hear a conversation between abstract painter Lisa Corinne Davis and Richard Mayhew, a luminary landscape painter, who, at 98, is still painting every day. They discuss their respective approaches to painting, their use of color, and how they address internal and intellectual “subjects” with their painting. They also talk about how they became artists and the roles that their families played in their development. Richard tells us about his Shinnecock grandmother's support of his early artistic work and how this heritage influenced his art making. He regales us with stories about his influences from Toni Morrison to his peers in the Spiral collective and sculptor Augusta Savage. Lisa and Richard relate to each other as interdisciplinary educators and share their experiences with how their progressive approaches to arts education were received with some resistance at times. Interesting connections between the two painters emerge throughout the conversation despite being from different generations as they discuss important centers of Black American artistic practice over the years. Both discuss the honor of being elected by their peers as National Academicians and how their inductions are separated by nearly 50 years.
In Episode 3, Babette tries to answer the question, “Where will we host our Black art spaces of the future?” In the woods, by the ocean, or in a city center? They turn to artists who deal with matters of space, place, and land: Octavia Butler, Richard Mayhew, and Bay Area artist Sage Stargate. Follow us, as we trace the footsteps our ancestors have left behind. Featured: Richard Mayhew, Evangeline Montgomery, Bí Oke, Sage Stargate, Babette Thomas, Jay Thomas, and Veronica Thomas. If there is one thing we know, men have always had that "love/hate" relationship with their health. Too often they put things off or bury their their heads in the sand. This week, we were joined by Consultant Urologist, Dr. Richard Mayhew for an enlightening discussion on Men's Health. The gentlemen aimed to give clear, impartial, no-nonsense advice and information for men to learn about the health problems that affect them and in the same breath empower them to get help when they need it.
In this Advent/Christmas special, as we think about the coming of our Lord Jesus, Richard and I talk about the journey he has shared with Jesus, and how that has lead him to be CEO with the Nazareth Trust, an organisation that has been healing people in the name of Jesus since 1861, engaging with 400,000 people every year. October is finally here and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is the first book of many this month that features the strange, the spooky, and the fantastical. We honestly say "fantastical" too many times this episode, but it is true. We loved this read, and how Neil Gaiman is a true master craftsmen when it comes to developing a world out of the mundane London landscape. The bitches discuss Scientology and the Greek metamorphosis of Richard Mayhew. We also tip our hats to Neil Gaiman and his portrayal of female characters. It was bound to happen sometime, and to Neil Gaiman - we salute you, sir. Hear us discuss how female characters can enlighten and uplift a male protagonist rather than act as a stepping stone for his plot progression. Book & Bitch is a bi-weekly podcast that combines all the juicy bits of the book with the insightfulness of the forward. Highlighting author backstories with cultural context and writing theory, we’re the book club you’ve always wanted to join. However you podcast, come bitch with us.
Richard Mayhew je docela obyčejný mladý Londýňan, který jednoho dne při cestě na důležitou večeři se svou snoubenkou pomůže otrhané zraněné dívce. V tom okamžiku se však jeho život obrátí vzhůru nohama. Labyrint Podlondýna, drsného světa pod slupkou všedního velkoměsta, Richarda vtáhne jediným kmitnutím krysího ocásku a on brzy zjišťuje, že cesta zpět nebude vůbec jednoduchá.
The Postmodern Kaleidoscope of London Below in Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere Chris Yokel In Neil Gaiman's first novel Neverwhere, an ordinary Londoner named Richard Mayhew is ushered into the fantastical underworld of London Below when he helps the mysterious injured vagrant girl, Door. After crossing paths with her and getting caught up in her story, Richard must traverse the shadowy and dangerous realms of the London underworld. In London Below, Neil Gaiman has crafted a postmodern kaleidoscope of a world that melds literary elements such as Greek mythology, Atlantis, Dante's Inferno, Paradise Lost, Alice in Wonderland, Puss in Boots, and other stories through which Richard must travel as he undergoes his heroic journey. Gaiman crosses borders between these genres and stories as he relates Richard's own border crossing from London Above to London Below.
Spark visits Richard Mayhew at his home studio outside Santa Cruz, California, in 2009. During this time, his work is appearing concurrently at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, and the de Saisset Museum of Santa Clara as part of a three-part retrospective tracing his career chronologically from the 1950s onward. His work is featured in the permanent collections of such museums as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum, among others.
No good deed goes unpunished! Richard Mayhew decides in a split second to rescue a wounded girl bleeding on the pavement instead of accompanying his girl-friend to an important dinner, and his life is turned upside down. And by upside down, I do mean upside down! He is drawn into a world underground that bears little resemblance (and yet it does!) to his own. Richard has entered London Below, the labyrinthic universe of the London “Tube” where things are not what they seem. Akin to Alice stepping into the looking-glass, Richard will have to figure out how to behave in a world whose rules are unfamiliar. And to top it all, he is now fully involved in a creepy situation helping Door, the young wounded lady, find out who killed her family and why. By now “Neverwhere” has become a Classic of urban fantasy. Dark but overly, funny at times, definitely exciting and fast pace, the reader is taken along with Richard into a world that will make you wonder which one of the two, London Below or London Above is better, and, to some extend, which one (of any) is real. A fun take on perception and reality. A great great GREAT book! :D
