This month we're back to the mid 80s to talk about our favourite songs of 1986, including thrash metal classics, proto-industrial stompers, enormous pop bangers, massive cheesy 80s soundtrack rock and loads more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - a-ha, The Art Of Noise ft Max Headroom, Big Black, The Bolshoi, Bon Jovi, Billy Bragg, Stan Bush, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Crowded House, Cutting Crew, Europe, The Go-Betweens, Bruce Hornsby & The Range, The Housemartins, Hüsker Dü, In The Nursery, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Kenny Loggins, Merzbow, Metallica, New Order, Public Image Ltd, R.E.M., Lionel Richie, Shub Niggurath, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Slayer, The Smiths, & They Might Be Giants.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SmV87RMDnpidlUpn4m7lU?si=Ssrrhy8iRtCgFXSP9-QXug&pi=p67BZNXETwqB5Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

EK On the Go

In the second of a two-part series, Larry Reid returns to explore the Pacific Northwest's meteoric rise as a global cultural force. Reflecting on his leadership of the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) in the mid-1980s, Larry recounts how the region's unique identity was forged in a crucible of creativity, rebellion, and unorthodox collaborations. His stories uncover the underground movements, bold choices, and iconic spaces he helped shape—elements that would ultimately define the Northwest's cultural identity. In this episode, Larry Reid shares insights from his transformative tenure at CoCA, where he curated groundbreaking events that fused the raw energy of Seattle's punk scene with conceptual and experimental art. By uniting these forces, Larry created a dynamic exchange of ideas, elevating Seattle's cultural profile to the global stage. A watershed moment in this evolution came when Larry envisioned and orchestrated the legendary Big Black concert at the Georgetown Steam Plant. This seminal gathering brought together live music, performance art, film, poetry, and spoken word in a singular, electrifying experience. Larry takes us inside the industrial space at that moment, recounting how his bold curation captured the unfiltered spirit of the Northwest and cemented its status as a creative epicenter. Throughout his career, Larry has bridged the worlds of independent and institutional art. From his trailblazing work at CoCA to his curatorial role at the Experience Music Project (now Museum of Pop Culture), he has consistently championed innovation. Now serving as curator and events coordinator at Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery, Larry continues to nurture emerging artists while staying true to the rebellious spirit that defined his roots. “In the moment, you don't realize that the things you're involved with are going to have any kind of lasting impact. I never had the time to take a breath to even think about it because one thing led to the next and you just don't have time to sort of sit back and contemplate the impact you're having. You just move on to the next thing.” ~Larry Reid

The discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope keep coming. After showing that galaxies formed far earlier than we thought, we now have a better understanding of what was going on in the early universe. Those little red dots spied by JWST are actually the glow of heated dust and gas from supermassive black holes, and not the glow from billions of stars as had been thought. Closer to home, did the Earth sport a ring for a few million years? Analysis of ancient craters suggests it may have. Tune in to get the full story, plus gravitational trivia, space news, and more.

[SEGMENT 1-1] The Big Backfire 1 Democrats can throw out the playbook. We've been on to them for some time, but I think the last 4 years really did almost irreparable damage. In their zeal to DESTROY Trump, Democrats made massive mistakes. First, they targeted Trump during his presidency, and yet he performed. No excuses, just amazing results with few exceptions. Trump's accomplishments are ones for the record books, and they cover the gamut of government activities. From closing the border to shutting down America's war machine, the man performed at a genius level. I've seen the list of things Trump did to bring business back and build the most productive economy since Bill Clinton, yet he gets little to no credit from the Left. And Trump accomplished miracles, while Democrats and RINOs tried to impeach him or put him in jail. After he got out, they didn't stop. We even reached the point where they've tried to kill him. But he just won't go away or DIE! The reality has set in with Democrats that Kamala Harris can't win. So now they target all the other races, which by the way we need to focus on as well. Their desperation has created massive opportunities. First, the MAGA movement is alive and thriving. And any candidate not willing to embrace its principles should be gone. Why is Trump winning? Because he's a pragmatist, dedicated to success. That transcends party affiliation, though he undoubtedly is more Republican than anything. But the main reason Trump doesn't win is he asks people questions: What do you have to lose? He doesn't tell you what to do, he offers alternatives, but it's your choice. Democrats want to TELL you what to do, how to think, how to act…. When Democrat tricks don't work.  [SEGMENT 1-2] The Big Backfire 2   Because of their political dominance of the Black vote, Democrats have decimated Blacks for decades. Democrats convinced Blacks that the giveaways would bring equality, when they knew the opposite would happen. How many studies have proven that when people are given something, they appreciate it less. Thus has been the case with Blacks. After all we've been given in this great nation, we devolved as a culture because of the constant race pimping.  [SEGMENT 1-3] The Big Backfire 3   Few people will say it, but most Blacks are disgusted with the behavior of a small percentage of Blacks who get far too much attention. These are the race-baiting, woe-is-me, continual Black complainers that Americans so detest. Joy Reid, Michael Eric Dyson, and the many other Blacks knowingly get rich by promoting the misery America supposedly heaps onto the shoulders of Black people.   [X] SB – Nancy Mace exposes Michael Eric Dyson   Black conservatives have recognized the game of the race pimps and tried repeatedly to expose them. Most Americans thought that the election of Obama would silence the voices of the race pimps, but instead it emboldened them. They doubled-down on their rhetoric. And when Trump got elected, they declared him racist, and Trump became the new father of Black oppression. Ironic, given that Trump asked Blacks in his campaign in 2016, "What the hell do you have to lose?" And I wrote recently, Trump showed more attention to Blacks than we received in two decades of presidents, including Baby Black Jesus. Why in the hell would Kamala Harris trot out Barack Obama? I commented recently that Obama tanked in his recent comments to Black men. And while I made the case for the damage Obama did, I need to update things. I've never seen so much pushback on Obama since he came on the political scene. Look at some of these comments about his tongue-lashing to Black men that came from Black men and women: [X] SB – Black man mad at Obama for lecture [X] SB – Black man 3 mad at Obama  [SEGMENT 1-4] The Big Backfire 4       Obama pissed black men off.

PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement.  While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave.  Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK.  Business was good, and it grew.  A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known.  The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era.  After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen.  It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers.  Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer.  Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded.  And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal.  Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album:     PULSARS's Info Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter:  https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/

Albums and All That, Starting with the letter S as in Sierra, Part 9 From Something to Shout About (Lulu) to Sophisticated Boom Boom (Dead or Alive) Oh hey, by the way... there is now a Vinyl-O-Matic Patreon (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill) Lulu with The Luvvers [00:30] "Chocolate Ice" Something to Shout About Decca LK 4719 1965 Hey hey hey! It's Lulu! This is her debut album. Despite what you might guess from her voice, she was 17 when she recorded this album. "Chocolate Ice" is the excellent title song to the very weird Gonks Go Beat (https://youtu.be/XhozBIMplQA?si=ULHH1FdCqSWJPyJ5) (Hartford-Davis, 1964), featuring Lulu and The Luvvers, The Nashville Teens, and the Graham Bond Organisation Todd Rundgren [02:40] "Hello It's Me" Something / Anything? Bearsville 2BX 2066 1972 Rundgren's 3rd solo album, spreading his musical wings a bit more than previous releases. Todd had originally written the song as a very mellow ballad with the Nazz in 1967, and was released as a b-side (https://youtu.be/FmLnDL_pNZQ?si=enMwjWzgNe_iplus) to their psyche rocker "Open My Eyes". Usually I'd go with the power pop progenitor "Couldn't I Just Tell You (https://youtu.be/fosMLTCFKQ8?si=Dgn25DMa61xCFRbJ)", but well, I'm feeling more mid-tempo at the moment. Jimmy Buffett [07:29] "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" Son of a Son of a Sailor ABC Records AA-1046 1976 Let me be perfectly clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Parrot Head. However, I do love cheeseburgers. This is the lead single from Buffett's eighth solo album. The single made it to #32 on the Hot 100. There's also a much-watered-down version of "Livingston Saturday Night", which can be heard to greater effect (https://youtu.be/5uizFyDRxso?si=ZfVrun8krTdxzagG) on the Rancho Deluxe (Perry, 1975) soundtrack, see also: Season 5, Episode 76 (https://vinylomatic.com/s05e76). Harry Nilsson [10:20] "It Is He Who Will Be King/Daybreak" Son of Dracula Rapple Records ABL1-0220 1974 The only new Nilsson song on this soundtrack. The less said about the actual film. Count Downe (Nilsson) is invited to take over Count Dracula's throne by Merlin (Ringo Starr). Lots of monsters and lots of rock stars, including Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, and Leon Russell. Watch at your own peril (https://youtu.be/IIik_o16sro?si=WvmR54QPJ16Qmd6s). Great packaging for the record though, includine a die-cut gatefold and an iron on transfer for the cover image with "Bite Me" written in goth script below. Julian Bahula's Jazz Africa [16:15] "Molebatsi" Son of the Soil Tsafrika Records TSA 001 1982 A great collective outing composed by this South African by way of Britain drummer/composer/bandleader. I picked this one up at Revolution Records in Amsterdam. If Google Translate isn't lying to me, this title translates to "Smoker" from Swati. And a smoker it is. The Temptations [21:46] "Shakey Ground" A Song for You Gordy G6-969S1 1975 One of several excellent P-Funk-backed tracks on this album. There's a pretty excellent Delbert McClinton version of this song as well (https://youtu.be/w7JCWoxtGLs?si=tLtnwaOT1j24Tgvy). The Exbats [25:47] "Like It Like I Do" Song Machine Goner Records GONE 192 2023 And boy do I like it! Another excellent outing from Bisbee AZ denizens Inez and Kenny and friends (https://youtu.be/l-Onx5zVfMs?si=OSeD0DJHPaOZ4NGW). They pretty much just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. Big Black [28:17] "L Dopa" Songs About Fucking Touch and Go T&G LP #24 1987 Scorching. And sadly, fare thee well, Steve. To anyone interested in recording, Steve and Electric Audio provided (and still provide) a wealth of information, as for instance: Everything you've ever wanted to know about tape alignment but were afraid to ask (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXA7imybaTsFWOFpaeP8wgXNDlZ4Xc8yq&si=ZMsU_ifbEBbmp6Kh). Steve Albini's Life Celebration Reissue of The Big Black Episode from October 2014.Interviews with Steve Albini, Santiago Durango, Jeff Pezzati, Camilo Gonzalez, Jim DeRogatis, and Russ Forster.July 22nd is the date of Steve Albini's Birthday.  I never do rebroadcasts of past episodes but I was informed of the idea for a life celebration of Steve on his birthday, so I was encouraged to participate.  The episode is worth it.  One of my best.  Much of the credit goes to my partner in this Russ Forster and of course to Steve and Santiago.- JugheadBig Black's aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine (who they lovingly called Roland) elements which pre-cursored industrial rock. The band acknowledged no taboos and Albini's lyrics openly dealt with loaded topics including murder, rape, child sexual abuse, and racism. They also held staunch principles, shunning the mainstream music industry and insisting on complete control over all aspects of their career. This podcast attempts to tell a portion of the history of the band from the perspective of their ep Bulldozer through their first full length record Atomizer. (Marking a transition from a project purely conceived by Steve Albini into a cohesive band with the added influences from collaborators Santiago Durango and Dave Riley.) This episode is co-hosted by Russ Forster and includes interviews with band members Santiago Durango, Steve Albini, and Jeff Pezzati, including extra interview material with friend and fellow songwriter/musician Camilo Gonzalez. Lastly an audio piece written by journalist/novelist/radio personality Jim DeRogatis. Russ Forster is a perennial dabbler in the underground and eccentric. Past exercises in cognitive dissonance include Underdog Records, 8-Track Mind magazine, documentaries So Wrong They're Right and Tributary, and various and sundry bands and acts like his current extreme-solo project Rakehell. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? Steve Albini was one of a kind. As a songwriter and musician in his bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac he made aggressive, uncompromising music with biting songs about the darkest side of the human experience. As an audio engineer he recorded pivotal albums for the likes of Nirvana, Pixies and PJ Harvey and worked with thousands of others covering every genre conceivable and changing the sound of modern music forever. He was a small business owner, a poker champion, a husband, a brother and a son. He was opinionated, sarcastic, hilarious and in recent years, self reflective. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at the far too young age of 61, while at work, doing a job that he often compared to a plumbers, a blue collar gig that required dedication, commitment and a tireless work ethic. It just so happened that Steve Albini's daily grind changed all of our lives. RIP Mr. Albini, you will be missed.    Recommended Listening   Shellac “To All Trains” https://open.spotify.com/album/09SFqMvmXLpfG62LjeSorU?si=CXxwC75RSYKgWbyIWB6EFQ   HHPP EP96: Nirvana VINYL CAGE MATCH “Bleach” vs “In Utero”  https://huntsmanhill.com/2019/04/09/ep96-nirvana-vinyl-cage-match-bleach-vs-in-utero/   HHPP EP147: The Jesus Lizard “Liar” https://huntsmanhill.com/2021/02/01/ep147-the-jesus-lizard-liar/   HHPP EP193: Big Black “Songs About Fucking”  https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/10/03/ep193-big-black-songs-about-fucking/   HHPP EP260: Mclusky “Mclusky Do Dallas” https://huntsmanhill.com/2024/03/17/ep260-mclusky-mclusky-do-dallas/   Albini on Parts Unknown  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDw22kt9yUY   Dogs 101 w/ Shellac  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZWrVQTlonc   Albini at Roscoes  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNuVg1LdF_o   manhuntsman “Copper Too” https://open.spotify.com/track/2rRi6MLDKl6pwqf6xaPdbs?si=8bab2bbf5a424daa   HHPP Spotify Tracks: Big Black “Kerosene” https://open.spotify.com/track/6tHZNpTqtOy64NMWqxMCjT?si=41a2691bab8642a8 Superchunk “Skips Steps 1 & 3 https://open.spotify.com/track/6028v7Uu22M78zzk7s9jSD?si=e0fb159790164402 Screeching Weasel “Celina” https://open.spotify.com/track/6Ul3yFXrrMOtMjaemrGM40?si=0e0b5902c4084405     Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ Mid City Three:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=aVFU0HdnRzqI1UOTAfc-ig

Damen Corrado is a Chicago-based writer and actor with old school links to Adam Parfrey and the broader American underground. In 2019, the late Parfrey's Feral House publishing imprint published a book co-written by Damen and James "Jinx" O'Connor. Entitled Compliments of Chicagohoodz: "A rare, private collection of photos, calling cards, and ephemera serves that analyzes the unique visual language and graphics of Chicago's gangs, drawing upon decades of interviews, documentation, and collecting of memorabilia, and featuring commentary from gang members and Chicago artists." Here we discuss that book, Adam's kneejerk contempt for graffiti, Dean Koontz, the evils of music critic Brandon Stosuy and music dickhead Steve Albini, the Ukraine and LGBT shilling of Douglas P,  the heroism of Jim Goad, the hideous growing pains of Generation X, the fortitude of Dominick Fernow, and more... There were technical difficulties with this recording. DEAL WITH IT! A pervasive myth of creativity goes something like this: if it's good, it should feel easy. But that's never been the case... for anyone. The truth is, doing creative work is hard. Sometimes it's like carving marble. In this episode, we explore the challenges of creativity and uncover strategies to overcome mental blocks when facing the daunting task of generating new ideas. From the unconventional approach of famous musicians and physicists to the power of terrible ideas, we invite listeners to push boundaries, think outside the box, and embrace the discomfort of creativity.Key Learnings:1. Embrace Irresponsibility: Sometimes, the pressure to be brilliant can hinder creativity. By allowing ourselves to play around with ideas without the expectation of publication, we can unlock new pathways and generate unconventional solutions.2. The Power of Terrible Ideas: Imaginating, or intentionally focusing on terrible ideas, can paradoxically lead to breakthrough concepts. By freeing ourselves from self-editing, we create space for unexpected and innovative thinking.3. Personal Idea Pad: Utilizing a tool such as the personal idea pad can help force connections and spark new ideas by smashing random concepts together. (Get the PIP at IdeaPad.me)4. Overcoming Biological Challenges: Our brain's novelty function can work against creativity, but with deliberate tools and strategies, we can hijack our biology and foster unique and valuable ideas.5. Creativity Is Work: Creativity demands effort, persistence, and the willingness to push beyond comfort zones. Great ideas are attainable if we are committed to the process.Get full interviews and daily content in the Daily Creative app at DailyCreative.appMentioned in this episode:NEW BOOK!
