Sega Mania Magazine brings you your slightly unusual dose of madness as we press on in our new four-man podcast format. Alex, Rob, Steve and Simon won't let you down though, it's still nearly two hours of chuffin' nonsense. The Mega Drive rankings enter the year of 1994, covered by Issue 5 of our wonderful magazine, and we begin with Sonic 3, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Pete Sampras Tennis, and ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron. Will Sonic 3 top our list? Will it even be the top Sonic game? You know what to do. We have some more questions that cover everything from our biggest Sega Mania regret to whether we like dark nights. It's the typical cornucopia of craziness from you lovely lot. Don't forget (and, seriously, don't forget because we've basically run out now) to get your questions in to podcast@sega-mania.com to immortalise yourself in podcast format. It's time for another new episode to drop, and this time we're mixing things up by taking a look at an entirely different Sega franchise, Puyo Puyo! This classic puzzle game series was first and most closely tied to Sonic through Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine in 1993, but the blue hedgehog and those multicolored blobs have proved to be a match-4 made in heaven, and continued to create combos right up to this very day. So listen in find out just how deep the connection between the spiny speedster and the Sorcery Saga spinoff goes. WhatwhatWHAAAT? No rose segment? Wasn't that just a weird one-off thing that Host Katie did for Jak 3? Why no, dear listener, it was NOT! Our "Random Non-Rose" series continues, this time with BOTH of the hosts, playing through Dr. Mario… err, I mean, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, for the Sega Genesis! Not familiar? Well, think of Tetris… make it two-player… get rid of the weird shapes… fill it with awkward portraits of enemy "bosses"… add a Dr. Robotnik storyline… completely omit Sonic entirely… ok fine, so it's not like Tetris, jeez, it's a SIMILE, ok? Give a producer a break! Listen in as the Hostblings talk through this wordplay-filled, broken-difficulty-curve-having, battle puzzle "Sonic" game, including some modern-day references to it from the STHCU! PS Tails should have been included.
It's week 2 of Patrick and Mark's holiday season exploration of the Sega Genesis on Nintendo Switch Online! This week, the guys talk about Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium, Strider, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

I don't know how Nintendo convinced all of us to accept the idea that Mario is a Doctor now, but they did it. And thank fuck they did, because this game is just...really, really good. Dr. Mario might not be as iconic as Tetris, but to anyone that grew up playing it on their NES (or GameBoy), it's pretty damned close. From the multiplayer, to firing it right up to level 20, to that damned music; this is just a really special video game. My fellow old-timer/comedian/podcast host David Rae joins me on the show this week, and we just had a really great time talking about a game that we both grew up loving. And playing with our parents, which isn't something I can say about another game. Long live Dr. Mario. And before we talk about Mario's medical credentials, it's time for another edition of the 'Remember The Game Infamous Intro'! This week, I offer some streaming advice to people thinking about taking the plunge. We play 'Desert Island: Video Game Edition'. And which is the better Splinter origin; a rat that becomes human, or a human that becomes a rat? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring retro puzzlers Solomon's Key, The Adventures of Lolo, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine! Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! We're talking about a couple of puzzle games that are only slightly related to Sonic this time. Sonic Eraser is one of the earliest Sonic titles and it was released only in Japan through an unsuccessful download service for the Genesis. Dr.Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the other hand is an early localization of the popular puzzle franchise Puyo Puyo. Next episode's game(s): Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles _____________________________________________________________ The No Spin Dash Zone is a podcast series where three friends with a long running history with Sonic play through each game in the franchise in the order they were released. We play through a game or two each week and then get together every Friday to discuss how we felt about what we played. We take a casual, but granular approach to the games we cover and we try to keep our conversations between an hour or two. Bobby, Chase and Johnny try and pick the wheat from the chaff while anticipating the upcoming E3. Meanwhile, for games we've been playing, Chase is reigniting his love for two old classics - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Bobby is in a state of bliss with State of Decay 2. And Johnny's ready to take another stroll through Blighttown in Dark Souls: Remastered. All that and more on this edition of The Casual Hour.
