A Pop Subculture Podcast. We discuss the highs and lows of music, film, sports, books, television, video games, wrestling, and pretty much everything in between.
We're back with some nonsense. On this episode we take an exended trip to Sean's Tubi Corner, Brad gets in a petty fight with a local pie company, and we read from the 1977 Better Homes and Gardens Mexican Cookbook. Enjoy.
We are back after a six (!) month abscence, but we actually have good reasons for it for once. After bemoaning our new tech issues, we talk about big life changes, including Brad moving and subsequently becoming a "thrifting" guy and Sean becoming a chef roaming the wastes of the midwest. We also discuss a bunch of other topics including the cleaning advice subreddit, Brad making a bird wall, the geography of Michigan, Diablo 4, Cherry Falls and Brittney Murphy's special request, the movie The Kiss, Troma stuff, innocuous horror movie lines, who is the dorkiest quarterback, Sean does Hooptober, the movie The Bees, the Subspecies series, cool lady Wynter gets a special shirt for John Carpenter, who is the podcast's favorite murderer, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell commentaries, noted maniac John Milius, some cassettes and Larry Wish talk, Bo Knows Bo, Jurassic Park: the book, is Watership Down sci-fi, Sean's concert rundown, seeing Goblin in concert with Claudio Simonetti's daughter doing interpretive dance, the Taco Bell discontinued items menu returns, further investigation into Taco Bell's insane food graveyard, a controversial Burger King opinion, Sean gets got by engagement bait posting about grilled stuffed burritos, and a certain special dog (not that one, but also that one). Hell of an episode right here. It is good to be back. Website: www.queenvenerator.com Bluesky: @queenvenerator.bsky.social
On this episode, our friend Paul joins us again to discuss the 1986 Adam Baldwin, Deborah Foreman, and Wings Hauser (?) vehicle 3:15 The Moment of Truth, the story of a D-II basketball prospect's struggle to defeat the biggest gang of dorks on the planet. We also discuss the wretched scourge of local Cleveland television Big Chuck and Little John, the various fits of Adam Baldwin, the disambiguation of Chooch, watching My Bodyguard in sociology class, Reggie's hat from Phantasm 2, Gene Labell, the ruthless efficiency of the Cobrettes, and the absolutely perplexing Wings Hauser cameo. ---- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

What happens when a man's creation becomes his agent of destruction? Well, the Modern Prometheus (Brad) finds out when his Frankingstein monster (The Board of Many Things) immediately turns on him as it casts an uncaring eye towards the 1985 Cannon ripoff of Indiana Jones King Solomon's Mines. Despite being directed by J. Lee Thompson (Cape Fear, Guns of the Navarone, Mackenna's Gold, 10 to Midnight), scored by Jerry Goldsmith (Alien, Patton, Chinatown, Papillon), and starring Richard Chamberlain (The Towering Inferno, The Thorn Birds, Shogun), Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, The Quick and the Dead, Sliver), and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Sliders) this movie is a ROUGH ONE. What started as a potentially fun romp turned sour quickly with a sloppy bouillabaisse of tonal whiplash, not-so-casual racism, and BOREDOM. Sean handles the assignment with typical aplomb, but Brad has several nervous breakdowns throughout the course of the episode. This was supposed to be one of the more fun board choices. Christ. ---- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social
We're back with another quick B-Sides episode (yeah, it was always called that don't look into it). This time around we discuss incredibly old gum that is prone to disintegrating, a belated 311 Day celebration, The Long Good Friday and its amazing decor, a very silly crime docudrama narrated by Robert Stack, and more nu-metal talk. Yes, of course Puya is discussed, but you already knew that. --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social
Oh wow. We've got a heater of an episode for you today. This time around, Sean and Brad are joined by first ever Queen Venerator guest Joe to discuss the work of Japanese video game publisher FromSoftware. Kind of. Look, there's a decent amount of discussion about FromSoft throughout their long, illustrious history, and yes Joe does a wonderful job conveying the true emotional pull these games can have on people, and yes we discuss Joe's infamously peculiar FromSoft collection. But lets face it, the Queen Venerator crew get distracted easily, so they break off into a multitude of tangents. The topics discussed are as wide-ranging as the Nick Jr. show Little Bear, David the Gnome, Total Recall, Shogun, Michael Mann specifically The Keep this time, Scott Glenn (of course), The Wire, Joe Lieberman meeting the Mortal Kombat Toasty guy in hell (I know its Dan Forden, calm down), the death of the Twitch Watch Party, Dan Ryckert's joy about Event Horizon, the 1991 Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Katsuhiro Otomo anime movie Roujin Z, the 1980 Troma released, kids-as-zombie-microwaves movie The Children, Cutlery Corner, MORE Siskel and Ebert talk, The Black Stallion: the greatest movie of ours and any generation, Justin Wong at Evo, Brad's continued Dead Cells obsession, Sean sneaking off to make memes, Sean surrupticiously eating a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, Maria Menounos and her cook books, Cheddar TV: TV for gas stations, Dragons Dogma 2 meat, Brad explains the Goo Crew and Joey's World Tour, Helldivers, Graveyard Keeper, those fake bowling animation videos, Ninja Gaiden, Low-G: The Low Gravity Man, and of course, Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects. Finally, we introduce two new segments on this show. First, we have what will clearly be a long-running feature: Sean Reads the Entirity of the Toxic Zombies Wikipedia Page, a real rollercoaster of emotions segment. Finally, after months of threats, Brad finally unleashes his wretched creation on the world: The Board of Many Things, a fifty category monstrosity used to select the topic of the next show. What did Sean win from the one armed bandit this week? This isn't a mixed metaphor, stop saying its a mixed metaphor. Whatever, you'll have to listen to find out. --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social
Mother Earth tried to stop this episode from coming out, but we are back after yet another extended absence. Yes, this episode was so powerful the gods tried to silence it by knocking out the power THREE TIMES during this recording. But despite Sean's audio being dealt a mortal wound (it's fine, you'll get over it), we got this thing across the finish line, and this time Sean brought a heater of a topic: "Go to the Head of the Class", the infamous season two episode Steven Spielberg's NBC anthology show Amazing Stories. This episode stars Mary Stuart Masterson, podcast spectre Tom Bresnahan, and Christopher Lloyd as the insane Professor Beans. Not only that, but it has Robert Zemeckis directing AND Stan Winston doing special effects. A true murderer's row on display here. And what has brought these titans together? A little story about satanic panic, severed heads, and SEX! This one's a wild ride for sure, but as is tradition on this show, Brad and Sean get caught up in what punk stickers adorn our hero's totally accurate, not a Hollywood invention in any way Super Rad Bedroom. It all culminates in a very Brad rant about how awful prestige television is and how it has taken away the good things about television, like Earth 2 and Manimal. We also discuss the various music challenges we've undertaken (and in Brad's case, failed at) in recent weeks, hot dog relishes, and winning at fake slots. We even premiere a new segment on the show: our semi-regular (?) Detroit Lions update called Honolulu Blue Notes. However, even when talking about the Lions, the two manage to discuss Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell and how he looks like he hangs out at the all-night gas station at 4AM. Its a good show, so check it out. --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social
The podcast is back at full strength as Sean returns to the co-chair on this one. You would think all that time away would give us time to find new and exciting things to talk about, but thankfully we immediately fall back into our habit of talking about garbage no one has cared about for literal decades. This time around there's a long discussion about Siskel and Ebert's At the Movies and the insane opinions of these two maniacs: Pleasantville being better than Saving Private Ryan, Babe: Pig in the City also being better than Saving Private Ryan, Black Stallion being better than Raging Bull, and Siskel's completely unsurprising love of Star 80. We also discuss that one scene in A Very Brady Sequel, the Action Boyz watching Godfrey Ho movies, getting squeezed out like a toothpaste roller, The Long Kiss Goodnight, the potential end to Sean's Tubi Corner, Jim Carrey's Foghat Man character, Shawn Hatosy sliding down a prop slide, the VHS copy of Medium Cool that destroyed Brad's VCR, Annie, the positive side of Grease 2, the many scores of Tangerine Dream, AIM screen names based on the surfing movie Blue Crush, God Lives Underwater vs. Primitive Radio Gods vs. Godsmack, and of course MTV's Fear. --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social
We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. We are still reeling from the Detroit Lions losing the NFC Championship game, so it might be a while) Artists Discussed (In Alphabetical Order): 2FAC, Aaron Dilloway, Aho Ssan, Altin Gun, Ana Frango Elétrico, Armand Hammer, Bandler Ching, BBBBBBB, Bill Orcutt, Billy Woods & Kenny Segal, Bounaly, Brass Riot, Bully, Caterina Barbieri, Charif Megarbane, Colin Stetson, Dead Times, Deena Abdelwahed, Disclosure, Divide and Dissolve, DJ Finale, DJ Girl, DJ Smiley Bobby, EABS & Jaubi, El Michels Affair & Black Thought, Ellen Arkbro, Embarker, Emergency Group, Euglossine, Fever Ray, Fire Toolz, Forest Swords, Gazelle Twin, Gezan & Million Wish Collective, Great Falls, Guilty Simpson & Uncommon NASA, Hitech, Hourloupe, Hyphyskazerbox, ICECOLDBISHOP, Jana Winderen, Janelle Monáe, Jlin, JPEGmafia & Danny Brown, Judgitzu, Karen y los Remedios, Katarsi, KEN Mode, Kool Keith & Real Bad Man, Kouns and Weaver, Larry Wish, Lauren Bousfield, Loraine James, Lost Girls, Lunch Money Life, Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, & DJ Muggs, Mallwalker, Marina Herlop, Matmos, MC Yallah, Mendoza Hoff Revels, MIKE, Mike Nigro, Model/Actriz, Mukqs, M-Ziq, Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy, Neupink, Novatron, Nuovo Testamento, Oozing Wound, OrangeTone, Organized Cream, Ortopedia Tecnica, Osees, Paavoharju, Physique, PoiL/Ueda, Private Lives, RP Boo, Screaming Females, Shit And Shine, Sightless Pit, Silver Apples & Makoto Kawabata, Sunik Kim, Sweeping Promises, TALSounds, Tee Vee Repairman, Teeth of the Sea, That Mexican OT, The Gate, The HIRS Collective, Tim Hecker, Tinashe, Tzusing, Victoria Monet, Vorsicht Kinder, Wound Man, Zoh Amba/Chris Corsano/Bill Orcutt --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social
We're back with part one of our October horror movie shows. Up first is Brad's pick: the 2003 action/thriller/horror movie 2LDK. It's an action packed episode of Queen Venerator this time around as we discuss a ton of stuff. We open with a super sized edition of Sean's Tubi Corner, as Sean talks about watching the 1995 Casper movie, both Vacancy movies, Grave Encounters 2, and 2000 Maniacs, a gore classic by H.G. Lewis, a guy neither Sean nor Brad like. Next, Brad gives a round up of more 2023 album releases, including new albums from MSPAINT, Matt Robidoux, Paavoharju, and Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy. Finally, its Brad's turn to pick the topic for this show, and he chose the 1974 Italian action/comedy romp Watch Out, We're Mad starring Terence Hill and Bud Spencer. Its a good one. On this episode, we discuss the awful conclusion to our fantasy football draft (and the insane draft evaluations that come with it), the 2007 Emily Blunt vehicle Windchill, D-Beat hardcore, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and a lengthy discussion of Sean's pick: the 1986 Rocky knockoff Streets of Gold starring Klaus Maria Brandauer, Wesley Snipes, and whiny baby Adrian Pasdar. We're back after a month away, and we're coming in hot with an expanded format. It's basically just smashing the long and short shows together into one thing, but it sounds more professional if you talk about formatting. That of course doesn't mean that the talk about nonsense garbage has stopped, or really been focused in any way, as this one goes everywhere. We talk about the oft-maligned 1996 Jerry O'Connell vehicle Joe's Apartment, the oeuvre of MTV Films in general, Keebler's discontinued line of pizza chips, the fact that we're apparently the number one source for information on the song "Strut" by Steven Seagal and Lady Saw, the 1986 Nico Mastorakis film The Zero Boys starring Kelli Maroney and Joe Estevez, the song "Destination Understanding" from Island of Death, new music from Novatron, Home Front, and Mats Gustafsson & Joachim Nordwall, the 1991 song "Joyride (I Saw the Film)" by Tribe, and the recent passing of noted director/wonderful maniac William Friedkin. Finally, in our main event, we discuss Sean's pick for this show: the 1982 John Frankenheimer movie The Challenge, a star-studded affair scored by Jerry Goldsmith, written by John Sayles, and starring Toshiro Mifune (and Scott Glenn, but you know... Mifune). Despite being loaded on all fronts with talent, the film flopped due to being absolutely swallowed up by the unreal number of megahits released in the summer of 1982. A true shame because this is a really good movie, and we think this is a really good episode. Enjoy? On this episode, Brad steps on a proverbial rake as he discusses Part One his "Never Seen Before" list of movies with Sean. He's had this since high school, so there really isn't any excuse for some of these movies to still be on this list. Titans of film like John Cassavettes, John Woo, Alan J. Pakula, and Akira Kurosawa are discussed, if you need any indication of how embarassing this gets. Yep. No episode this week. I want to scream.
Due to some late breaking tech issues, we are digging deep in the vaults to bring you an episode from our old feed. Originally released in 2018, this episode sees Sean, Brad, and former guest Steve discuss the 1961 William Castle movie Mr. Sardonicus, the tender story of curing a ghoul of facial paralysis through the healing touch of massage and hot towels. The audio on this is a bit rough as we recorded it in the back room of a bar, but its still a fun one. Enjoy. We're back with part one of Sean's pick: the 1995 sci-fi movie Evolver, starring Ethan Embry, John de Lancie, Paul Dooley, and William H. Macy. We also discuss the history of Vidmark/Trimark Video, big salads, and how John de Lancie made the world's most evil Pokemon. It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. Enjoy! This is part two of our discussion of the August 12th, 1989 edition of Memphis Wrestling TV. It is time for our main event, and my god is it a winner. Our main event sees "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel square off against Nightmare Freddie aka a Ric Flair rip-off gimmick vs. a guy in a Freddy Krueger costume, and yes it is as glorious as the description makes it out to be. Does it take five minutes for an actual move to be performed in this wrestling match? Yes. Is Freddy the good guy here? Of course he is. Is Buddy hungover? Almost certainly. Is there a run-in by Jason Voorhees? POSSIBLY. Also, as this is still Queen Venerator, we also discuss Arby's, Wendy's, the American Yakuza film series, and the many sports films of Ron Shelton. Good stuff. Website: www.queenvenerator.com Twitter: @queenvenerator Instagram: @queenvenerator Hive: @queenvenerator
We're back with another pick from Brad on this episode, and we are goin' to R-A-S-S-L-I-N. Yes, he didn't learn his lesson the first time. This time he drags Sean to the thriving metropolis of Memphis, Tennessee for an episode of CWA TV from August 12th, 1989. Is this episode taking place in a tiny TV studio? Yes. Did they shoot this at 10AM? Yes. Are the wrestlers visibly hungover? Of course. This is an episode of the promotion's B-show during a period of decline, so no one's got their working boots on today, but that doesn't mean that this is a bad show. Far from it. We have early appearances of Dustin Rhodes and the Undertaker, the much-discussed Dirty White Boy, and, of course, Ronnie P. Gossett. We also get a ton of local commercials on this video, from local country buffet Po' Folks to Cheerwine to news reports on what to do with your organs after you die. Fun stuff all around. If you want to follow along with us, you can watch the video in its entirety here. Website: www.queenvenerator.com Twitter: @queenvenerator Instagram: @queenvenerator
On this bonus episode, Sean gives his review of Terrifier 2, Brad dives into the morass of F1 and college football, and both of them discuss shoe-based restaurant horrors. Website: www.queenvenerator.com Twitter: @queenvenerator Instagram: @queenvenerator
We're back with part two of Brad's pre-high school mixtape of songs, and Christ Almighty are they terrible. No one forced him to admit that he listened to this stuff, yet here we are. We're officially back from our extended leave, and it's Brad's turn to run down his mixtape of songs he listened to pre-high school. Whereas Sean's "mixtape" was predicibly pretty cool all things considered, Brad's mixtape is... not. Enjoy? Topics Discussed: The inevitably lengthy discussion of the Sick New World tour Disassembling computer towers to burn an American Hi-Fi song The profundity of “Understanding in a Car Crash” Is it pronounced “Alex is on Fire” or “Alexis on Fire”? Did any musician age worse than The Streets? The Zach Slow, Jelly Donut, and Lady Sovereign saga The Toadies vs. Oasis battle at Brad's high school The time Brad got in trouble because of Fatboy Slim The time Brad and his friend got in trouble because of Ludacris The highs and lows of the turntablism genre Rahzel making the music with his mouth A terrifying electronic music video And, of course, Methods of Mayhem Website: www.queenvenerator.com Twitter: @queenvenerator Instagram: @queenvenerator
