Welcome back to the first episode in the new series of the Future Learning Design podcast. The podcast now has a lovely new home at Good Impact Labs (goodimpactlabs.com). The first guest in this new series is the social philosopher and internationally best-selling author, Roman Krznaric In his book, The Good Ancestor, Roman challenged us all to consider the rights of future species and future citizens in the face of our current catastrophic obsession with short-term thinking. Now, Roman is leading us into the past to ask what can we learn from history in his fantastic new book History for Tomorrow: Inspiration from the Past for the Future of Humanity. His internationally bestselling books including The Good Ancestor, Empathy, The Wonderbox and Carpe Diem Regained, have been published in more than 25 languages. He is Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University's Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing and founder of the world's first Empathy Museum. After growing up in Sydney and Hong Kong, Roman studied at the universities of Oxford, London and Essex, where he gained his PhD in political science. Particularly known for his work on empathy and long-term thinking, his writings have been widely influential amongst political and ecological campaigners, education reformers, social entrepreneurs and designers. An acclaimed public speaker, his talks and workshops have taken him from a London prison to the TED global stage. Over half a million people have watched his RSA Animate video The Power of Outrospection Roman is a member of the Club of Rome and a Research Fellow of the Long Now Foundation. He previously worked as an academic, a gardener, a conversation activist and on human rights issues in Guatemala – the subject of his book What the Rich Don't Tell the Poor. He is also a fanatical player of the medieval sport of real tennis, whose history he explores in The First Beautiful Game. When the economist Ha-Joon Chang arrived in Britain in the eighties, he was struck by how bland and homogeneous the British diet was. But it wasn't just the food – in mainstream economic thinking too, there seemed to only be one item on the menu – the Neoclassical tradition. Whilst our diet has expanded and diversified since then, our economic preference has remained stubbornly singular. Chang argues that just as a nourishing and appetising diet needs a variety of flavours and nutrients, our economics also needs to borrow from different traditions and ways of thinking in order to produce the best results for the greatest number of people. Childhood Trauma is an emotional response to an event like an accident or attack, during our childhood years. It influences some of our immediate behaviour in childhood, but it can also have long lasting affects deep into adulthood, often without the realisation. However, does childhood trauma have as long lasting affects as they say? And does it get thrown around loosely on social media as a buzzword? We sit down to discuss what it means to us and if it provides rationalisation or even legitimisation for people's behaviours. 03:00 Are Black British actors better than their American counterparts, 03:50 Would we sell our bodies online for the right price?, 11:00 Is Trauma ever an Excuse?, 19:00 How childhood Trauma affects Adult Behaviour, 27:20 Are Millennials Cry Babies?, 37:07 Why our Greedy Habits make us unhappy, 46:55 Why you hate your 9-5? Bestselling author and RSA Animate sensation Dan Pink reveals the ideal ‘when’ for every decision. Timing is everything- but how much do we know about timing itself? Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when” decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork. This event was recorded live at The RSA on Thursday 25th January 2018. Discover more about this event here: https://www.thersa.org/events/2018/1/the-secret-of-perfect-timing

I’ve noticed a happy trend in online video: People have begun to produce animations and mashups of public lectures that add considerable value to the spoken words. If you are unfamiliar with these visual essays, watch any of the RSA Animate videos, like the one below: People have also taken excerpts from my own lectures and combined them with stock footage. For example: I would like to encourage this behavior. To that end, I am offering the following voice-over track, adapted from one of my debates. This audio file is yours to use any way you see fit. And if you produce something especially creative, I will do my best to bring attention to your work.
This show has the kids at the back of the class discussing the RSA Animate youtube clip entitled: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, and looking for what this video's message means for education.
