I'm taking aim at Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow first introduced the concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper, titled "A Theory of Human Motivation.” The point was to showcase that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. What I want you to pay attention to and consider is that Maslow showed us what we tend to do. Not what is best. He was just reporting. Yet as a culture we seem to have taken his reporting of what we tend to do as what we should do. When I go to the coffee shop and pass the pastries I tend to want one. If I was a caveman I'd just take one and eat to survive. However, I'm not a caveman. I don't at all need that pastry and the sugar and gluten would not serve me best, so I pass it by. Most of the time. I'm not a total masochist. But I've evolved beyond survival. But as a culture we still look to the basic needs as our priority and even our status symbols. What if our level of self-actualization, self worth and relational was as apparent as our ability to job, money and belongings? While his hierarchy of needs is often presented graphically as a pyramid, Maslow himself did not use this symbol to represent his theory.

Dealing with distractions is a common challenge that many professionals face in their everyday lives. Traction (the opposite of distraction) is the force that drives us towards our goals and objectives, keeping us focused on the tasks that really matter. In order to combat distractions, it's vital to create a plan that outlines the necessary steps for achieving success. This includes setting clear objectives and breaking down goals into manageable tasks, while also allocating specific time for relaxation or personal enjoyment.  By doing so, individuals can achieve a balanced life that fosters productivity and happiness. During this conversation with host Melina Palmer, Nir Eyal emphasized the importance of distinguishing between distraction and traction. Contrary to popular belief, the opposite of distraction isn't focus, but rather traction. Eyal explained that distractions are anything that pulls us away from our true goals, while traction is any action that brings us closer to achieving them. He urged listeners to create schedules that align with their values and to stick with them, ensuring that they devote the necessary time and focus to what truly matters. He talks about how he was distracted by his phone while spending time with his daughter. Research and personal testing made him realize the problem was much deeper than just technology. He defines traction as any action that pulls you towards what you want to do, and distraction as any action that pulls you away from what you plan to do. Conversely, anything can be traction if we make time for it and plan it according to our values. Becoming indistractable means living with personal integrity and knowing why we got distracted. 00:18:28 - The Root Cause of Distraction, Eyal identifies the root cause of distraction as our inability to deal with discomfort in a healthy manner. We use distraction as psychological pacification and escape uncomfortable emotions. To become indistractable, we must first learn to deal with the discomfort in a healthy way by fixing the source of discomfort or finding ways to cope. 00:19:48 - Human Motivation, Nir explains that human motivation is not about the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain but rather spurred by discomfort. We have two neural circuits, the liking system and the wanting system. The purpose of the wanting system is to create discomfort to get us to act. The idea is to channel these uncomfortable sensations towards traction rather than distraction. 00:29:21 - Mindset and Reimagining Temptation, Our brains are wired for mindset issues, and we need to reimagine our temperament to become indistractable. If we have an issue, we need to understand the root cause and channel our mindset towards traction instead of distraction. We can reimagine the task, trigger, or our temperament to master the internal triggers, which is crucial to becoming indistractable. 00:32:00 - The Nuances of Technological Distraction, Our relationship with technology and other distractions is a nuanced discussion. Everything has unintended benefits and harms, and it is crucial to take a deeper look. We need to understand the good stuff that's happened and not just the negatives. If something is not serving us, we should disconnect and use what we want with intent. 00:35:23 - The Story Behind the Moral Panic, Every moral panic throughout the years has had a scapegoat, and this time, it's technological distraction. It's dangerous to believe in scientifically unsupported theories, which leads to learned helplessness. Message Text: Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 Introduction What do you want out of life? What is your aim in life? Money, fame, promotions, status, more things? The sobering reality is even after attaining these things, many people are still not satisfied or fulfilled. What is it that people really desire or want out of life? A marketing research team summarized the things people want out of life along with the motivating factor behind it: *1. High paying job. Human Motivation - to make us feel successful and valuable and essential to our companies or business. 2. Save money, spend less. Human Motivation - to secure the future and allow for the unexpected expenses of life. 3. Use time more wisely. Human Motivation - to enjoy life more by not working as much. So if we can save time at work, theoretically, we can get things done faster and go home sooner. 4. Look better. Human Motivation - to feel more attractive to other people. We like for others to like our looks. 5. Learn new things. Human Motivation - to be more empowered by what we know and make better decisions in light of this knowledge. 6. Live longer. Human Motivation – the worldviews of the world make us too afraid to die because they give no certainty as to what follows this life. 7. More comfortable. Human Motivation – we want to enjoy a life that is as pain-free and comfortable as possible. 8. Want to be loved. Human Motivation – we do not want to be alone in this life. It relieves us from criticisms if we have someone. 9. Popular. Human Motivation - affirmation and praise from others makes us feel important and cool to be with. 10. Pleasure. “Say, therefore, to the Israelite people: I am the Lord. I will free you from the labors of the Egyptians and deliver you from their bondage. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and through extraordinary chastisements. And I will take you to be My people, and I will be your God…I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob…” But when Moses told this to the Israelites, they would not listen to Moses, their spirits crushed by cruel bondage.” Exodus 6: 6-9. Our reading this week begins with God promising the Israelites, through five famous verbs, that God would save them. The promises all turned out to be true. Every year at our seders, we celebrate these five verbs of redemption through the four cups of wine and the fifth cup for Elijah and Miriam. Famously, however, the Hebrew slaves who were the intended audience for this reassurance could not take it in. Why not? Because of Abraham Maslow. In 1943 Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist, wrote a paper entitled “A Theory of Human Motivation” in which he argued that there is a hierarchy of needs. Before we can get to spiritual liberation (the apex of the pyramid), we need to feel safe, secure and protected (the base of the pyramid). All of us have experienced the truth of Maslow's hierarchy if you have ever attended an outdoor burial in January in New England. It does not matter how much you love the person being laid to their rest, when you are at the graveside, all you want is to conclude the burial as quickly as possible and get back into a warm car. The Israelites could not take in promises of liberation when their reality on the ground was so painful. What about us? In Hallel, we thank God, but only after we recover from illness or serious threat. What does Maslow's hierarchy of needs say to us, today? How do we provide spiritual comfort to people whose physical realities remain challenging with no ready solution?

Today's referenced studies:  "Self-Determination Theory: A Macrotheory of Human Motivation, Development, and Health" by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan is a seminal paper that introduces the self-determination theory and outlines its key concepts and principles. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential and widely cited works on the topic. "The Hierarchical Model of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation" by Edward L. Deci, Richard M. Ryan, and Richard Koestner is a classic study that explores the relationship between different types of motivation and their impact on behavior. It shows that intrinsic motivation, which is driven by an individual's internal interests and curiosity, is more likely to lead to long-term engagement and positive outcomes than extrinsic motivation, which is driven by external rewards or incentives. "The Role of Autonomy in Motivational Processes" by Edward L. Deci, Richard M. Ryan, and Richard Koestner is another important study that investigates the role of autonomy in motivation. It shows that when individuals feel a sense of autonomy and control over their own actions, they are more likely to be intrinsically motivated and engaged in their activities. Consistency is the key to establishing authenticity for your brand.” “You need to stand for something, otherwise you stand for nothing,” says Andrew. “It's one thing for a brand to say it's doing something with purpose, but creativity allows you to show what that purpose looks like and why it matters to your audience. Some brands don't want to take a position on anything because they fear they'll alienate certain audiences. This has led to creative outputs that are overly earnest or bland, which is disheartening because creativity should excite, inspire and illicit an emotional response.” The conversation then shifts to how both of our guests stay inspired and keep their creativity flowing. "I approach the world with open eyes," says Aaron. "The world can be jaded and dark sometimes, but I keep a sense of innocence, optimism and acceptance, which creates cool creative opportunities for me and excites me to wake up every day. It also helps to hear about what others are doing in the creative space and how it can inspire my own work." “I try to expose myself to as many different things as possible,” says Andrew. “In order to be creative, I need to be able to view things in new ways and from different perspectives, which requires setting up points and counterpoints. It's all about creating new contexts for your brain to do its work and reach that ‘eureka' moment.” Our discussion closes with advice for how brand marketers and communicators can elevate creativity in their campaigns and communications in 2023. “You need to be honest and empathetic,” says Aaron. “As creatives, we must be able to put ourselves in other people's shoes to understand and talk to them in a way they connect with. You also need to be provocative, whether it's being fun and whimsical or triggering an emotional response. Brands can't play it safe.” "Brands need to be radical and daring," says Andrew. First, let's talk about some productivity tips for staying productive. Productivity is all about simplicity. An elaborate morning routine or productivity method may not be what works for you, but it could be perfect for someone else.  I've tried tons of methods to find out that it may be best to integrate several methods. But all in all, no matter which method is best for you, these steps will help you get where you want to be.Before we jump into planning a productive week, let me tell you the three rules we follow before we set our goals for the week.Keep it simple - Apply the 80/20 ruleContrary to some gurus, You don't need to have tons of complicated planners, notebooks, and apps to be a productive person. In fact, the less clutter you have, the better! That's why the Pareto's Principle, the 80/20 rule is a great way to simplify your life and focus on the important things. Basically, this rule states that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. So, if you're feeling overwhelmed by all that you need to do, take a step back and ask yourself which tasks are actually going to move the needle? Give yourself a task test. Do I NEED to do this to reach my goal? I recently read the book via; Audible Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins, who is a retired professional athlete. And is the only person in history to have completed Navy SEAL training, Air Force tactical air control party training, and Ranger School. He is also a former world record holder for the most pull-ups done in 24 hours. Pretty amazing stuff, right? David put in countless hours of training in order to make his dreams happen. But what if David only spent 20% of his time training and the other 80% of his time doing tasks that had no real bearing on his goals. Just think... What if Oprah spent 80% of her time in her early years gardening? Do you think you'd know who she was today? "Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago."— Warren Buffett The first step is to focus on the one thing that you want to accomplish for the week that aligns with who you want to become.Be consistently intentionalThat brings me to the second rule. Be intentional with your weekly goals. Do they line up with your monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals?  If your goal is to become an influencer. Your week should reflect tasks and actions towards becoming an influencer. If your personal goal is becoming more patient, your weekly goals should reflect that goal...Consistently! So what do you do when it's hard to be consistent? David said in his book that when it got really hard to continue, he was running with a heart condition, a broken leg, and bloody swollen feet. Jerry consistently and intentionally applies the 80/20 rule by writing one joke every day; because he has created a lifelong string of many jokes, he will remain a comedic icon. Action step: What is one thing you can consistently and intentionally apply to reach your goals?Be flexible and integrate your entire lifeOne huge problem with "time management" is that we do have not to control over time itself. There's no way we could accurately schedule every moment. Life happens, which is why it's best to add plenty of cushion to our day. We forget to integrate our life with our work and our work with our life.  Don't get me wrong; I'm not encouraging you to multitask. What I am saying is when you plan your day, keep in mind that you may have doctor's appointments, little league games, lunch with a friend, downtime to yourself, and time for the necessities like getting ready for the day and reflecting on your day. By no means am I suggesting scheduling out every little piece of your day. If that doesn't work for you, it definitely doesn't work for me; however, what I am saying is to make sure that you are flexible and that you remember to include both your work and your life. Again, I don't encourage task switching or multitasking; however, there are times when multitasking can be beneficial to you. For example, if you've scheduled an hour for a walk, that's also the time when you can listen to podcasts or catch up with a friend or neighbor. Let's sum up the three rules we should follow before we plan our week.Keep it simple - apply the 80/20 ruleBe intentional - Do your weekly goals apply to your overall goal?Be flexible - Integrate your entire lifeIt doesn't matter if you're wondering how to plan your week as a student, entrepreneur, or a goal-getter; these strategies will help you build a solid plan to get you there.Step 1 Schedule a Day to Plan Your WeekOne of the best ways to make sure that you actually plan your week is to schedule it in your calendar. This will help to ensure that you get it done instead of procrastinating or winging it because you didn't make the time. Some people swear by planning on Sunday or super early Monday morning. Sunday's used to be my number one pick too. However, my favorite days now are Thursday or Friday. Find space in your calendar that you can commit to and schedule it. Platforms like Google calendar make it easier to schedule your planning sessions for weeks to come automatically. It's like a date with your planning session. So that means time without social media which includes but is not limited to Tic Tok, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, LinkedIn, and their friends' Clubhouse, YouTube, and Pinterest. When you have a scheduled day of the week for planning, it's easier to stay focused and productive. Step 2 Use a System to PlanLet's talk about where are you going to store your plans? We have to use a system. Some where to house our plans outside of our minds. This system is a giant step for your sanity. It's the difference between sleepless nights and sound rest and the difference between a wish and an accomplishment.Studies have shown that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them.People with written goals are 50% more likely to achieve than people without written goals (http://www.goalband.co.uk/goal-achievement-facts.html) Multimillionaire CEO and author Lonnie Dawson says that only 1% of the population has written goals they review regularly, and these were among the highest achievers in the United States. Dawson also says a millionaire looks at their goals once a day in a billionaire looks at their goals twice a day.  But it's not enough to just jot down a few goals, review them, and hope for the best.You need to find a system that works for you to plan your week."Experts in every field agree on the transformative power of systems"(Mark Joiner, Simpleology). Do you like paper or digital planners? While some people swear by paper planners, others prefer the convenience of digital planning apps. There are pros and cons to both methods, but it ultimately comes down to personal preference. I like to benefit from the muscle memory of using pen and paper, but I had random journals, notebooks, and pieces of paper everywhere. But I prefer the flexibility of digital planners. What was my solution? I pair my digital planner with an iPad and Apple pencil using the Goodnotes app. It's the best of both worlds for me. I can keep my plans handy wherever I go, but I can manually write everything out without sending out a search party. Whether it's a digital planner or good old-fashioned pen and paper, there are plenty of options. I have a free time blocking template and digital planner template you can use either digital or as a printable. However, if you use printables, you may want to include some digital systems like: NotionTrelloGoogle CalendarGoogle Tasks Step 3 Brain dump, categorize and prioritize tasksOnce you have your system in place, it's time to do a brain dump. This is where you make a list and write down everything that's on your mind, no matter how big or small. Once you have everything out of your head, you can start to categorize and prioritize your tasks. How do you categorize your tasks is an individual thing. It's what's important to you. I say break them down into no more than five categories such as finance, social, personal, health, and family. In case you need a little help understanding the importance of categorizing or selecting your top categories, I'd like to share an extremely popular theory quoted by great leaders like Tony Robbins, Mel Robins, and Brandon Burchard. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a theory in psychology that Abraham Maslow proposed in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation".The hierarchy describes the basic needs that human beings must satisfy in order for them to reach their full potential.  The first level of the hierarchy is physiological needs, such as the need for food, water, and sleep. The second level is safety needs, including the need for shelter and protection from danger.  The third level is love and belongingness needs, including the need for friendships and relationships. The fourth level is esteem needs, including the need for respect and recognition. The fifth and final level is self-actualization needs, which includes the need to become everything that a person can be. The hierarchy is often represented as a pyramid, with the lower levels representing the more basic needs and the higher levels representing the more complex needs. Maslow believed that all human beings have the potential to reach the fifth level of self-actualization, but not all will do so.  He also believed that people are motivated to satisfy their needs in order of importance, starting with physiological needs and moving up to self-actualization needs.The goal is for us to become the most fulfilled version of ourselves. Categorizing our priorities helps us get there by reminding us of what's really important in all aspects of our life, not just one area. So look at your brain dump list and prioritize the things you NEED to do, and categorize them. For example, working out would be under the health or fitness category, and editing a blog post would fall under something like the finance or career category.Step 4 Create the ProcessNapoleon Hill says, Plan your work and work your plan.So how do we work our plan?Once you've identified your goal and prioritized it, it's time to start planning how you're going to achieve it. This is where you take action! If you struggle with distractions, procrastination, or overwhelm.I totally get it...I spent too many hours wondering what I should do next. A pro tip here is to use templates. I spent counts hours and dollars purchasing courses and workshops so I could learn the best processes for my tasks. You can cut the line and the cost by visiting the Total Fit Boss Chick shop and grabbing a done-for-you template. If you don't see a template you're looking for, it's probably in the process of being created. However, I want to serve you well, so let me know if you are in search of anything in particular. In addition to using templates, I suggest task chunking. Task chunking is a great way to break down a large task into smaller, more manageable tasks. This can be helpful for complex tasks that seem overwhelming or for tasks that have a lot of steps. Make a list of all the tasks you need to complete to reach your goal. Be sure to include both big and small steps. For example, if your goal is to write several blog post, your list might include tasks like "research," "content writing," and "edit." Once you have your list of steps complete I, suggest task batching.Task batching is the process of completing similar tasks together. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as grouping related tasks together, completing them all at once, or scheduling them to be completed at the same time. Time blocking is another process to manage your time and stay productive. It involves setting aside specific blocks of time for specific tasks. This can be helpful for tasks that need to be completed in a specific amount of time, which we'll discuss a bit more in step 5.Step 5 Schedule your WeekNow it's time to schedule your week. This is where your calendar is your best friend. - "A calendar is a planning system. It is a way to see your life on paper." - Rachelle Gardner You may find it helpful to create a theme for your work. I like to schedule themed days so I don't have to constantly look at my calendar for what I should do on a particular day—for example, Talking Thursday. Thursday is the day I do all my talking for videos, podcasts, etc. High-priority tasks should go into your calendar first. The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule but to schedule your priorities. Stephen Covey Here's how you can easily schedule your task in Google Calendar.1. Open Google Calendar and click the "Create" button in the top left corner.2. Select "Event" from the list of options.3. Enter the details for your task. The most important information is the date and time, but you may also want to include the name of the task and a brief description.4. Click "Save" when you're finished. Time blocking may help you drill even further. To time block, simply find a time on your calendar that you can dedicate to the task, and then block it off. US psychologist Abraham Maslow's A Theory of Human Motivation is a classic of psychological research that helped change the field for good. Like many field-changing thinkers, Maslow was not just a talented researcher, he was also a creative thinker - able to see things from a new perspective and show them in a different light. He studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people.
