Zeno of Citium (c. 334 – c. 262 BC) was a Hellenistic philosopher from Cyprus and the founder of Stoicism. His philosophy emphasized living in harmony with nature and practicing virtue to attain peace of mind (ataraxia). Zeno's teachings influenced ethics, logic, and natural philosophy, laying the foundation for Stoicism's prominence during the Roman era and beyond. Despite losing his original writings, Zeno's ideas survived through the works of later Stoics like Cleanthes and Chrysippus.

Send us a textWe've talked about objectivism before on the podcast, but that was fairly introductory. Today, for the first time ever, I host two guests on the podcast to discuss the limitations of objectivism and where it fails to depict the good life. We talk about how they got interested in Rand's thought, how they philosophically dealt with works that were mostly fiction, and where their philosophy, individualistic perfectionism, diverges from Rand's and fills in some important blanks. A brief overview of Socrates, the classical Greek philosopher widely regarded as the founder of Western philosophy. Known for his Socratic method of questioning, he profoundly influenced ethical thought, epistemology, and later philosophical traditions.
In this episode, I walk through Meditations 3.12, where Marcus Aurelius claims that if we pursue Virtue with sincerity and without distraction, we will live “the blessed life.” But what does that really mean in Stoic terms? We examine what “blessed” refers to (spoiler: it's Eudaimonia, or inner peace) and ask whether the Stoics pursued Virtue for its own sake or for the sake of that peace. I argue that Virtue leads to inner peace by removing destructive emotions like anger, fear, shame, and grief—what the Stoics called the pathē. When we understand Nature and act in accordance with it, those emotions lose their hold on us. But that inner peace isn't the goal of Stoicism—it's a byproduct of doing the work of moral development for its own sake. That work is the point. MEDITATIONS 3.12 “If you complete the present work, following the rule of right, earnestly, with all your might, with kindness, and admit no side issue, but preserve your own divinity pure and erect, as if you have this moment to restore it; if you make this secure, expecting nothing and avoiding nothing, but content with present action in accord with Nature and with heroic truth in what you mean and say, you will live the blessed life. Now there is no one who is able to prevent this.” THREE TAKEAWAYS — Virtue leads to inner peace: By eliminating destructive emotions through rational understanding, we create a calm mind and a steady heart. — The pursuit of Goodness should be its own reward: Stoicism teaches us to seek Virtue not as a means to peace, but as the end in itself. — Eudaimonia is a byproduct, not the goal: Inner peace naturally follows from living rightly, but it's not what we should be aiming at directly. I've drifted in and out of the meritocracy trap over the years, but mostly, I've stayed stuck in its sticky web. I quickly learned the value of good grades and securing better jobs. Once I landed a good job and the race to secure it was over, I descended into despair at the thought of doing it for the next forty years. Fast-forward a decade, and financial independence allowed me to sidestep the meritocracy trap. However, this too felt like another shiny merit badge. When I reached that point, I looked around and realized, like a bus rider stepping off at the wrong stop: damn it—this isn't it.Who would have thought you couldn't find happiness by looking for it? Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves.Today's conversation is with Shamil Chandaria, and as I alluded to in last week's newsletter introducing computational neuroscience—it is the longest and most technical conversation we've had to date.I have wanted to speak with Shamil since I watched his lecture at Oxford titled The Bayesian Brain and Meditation.Shamil is a former advisor to Google DeepMind, co-foudner and research fellow at Imperial College London Centre for Psychedelic Research and Oxford University's Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing, and a co-author with Robin Carhart-Harris and the Imperial team of the influential 2023 paper titled Canalization and Plasticity in Psychopathology, Importantly for this conversation, Shamil is also a longtime meditation practitioner, and his current work is dedicated to exploring contemplative practices, spiritual awakening, and psychedelics through the lens of computational neuroscience. At the heart of the conversation is the Free Energy Principle, a relatively new concept in cognitive neuroscience that conceives of the brain as a prediction machine constantly updating its internal models to minimize prediction errors. This framework along with the Bayesian Brain Hypothesis show how the brain optimally processes sensory data through inference, which has profound implications for how we perceive and experience the world. We discuss:* The brain as a prediction machine* The convergence of ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience.* Defining human flourishing beyond the absence of suffering to include meaning, love, joy, connection, and psychological resilience.* The role of body sensations, emotions, and somatic practices in psychotherapy and how they tie into the brain's predictive coding mechanisms.* Spiritual awakening, liberation and human flourishing through a neurocomputational lens* The potential for integrating free energy principle-based models into the field of psychiatry, improving therapeutic approaches and mental health care.* And much moreMy takeaway from this conversation is that we are, in fact, in the midst of a paradigm shift—one that bridges the fields of meditation, psychology, psychedelics, phenomenology, psychiatry, and even artificial intelligence. This new understanding, grounded in the free energy principle, offers a unified theory that links ancient wisdom with modern neuroscience, reshaping how we think about consciousness, well-being, and what it means to be sentient. And now, I bring you my conversation with Shamil Chandaria.I want to highlight our friends at the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation (TBD), who have just announced their latest Request for Proposals for scientific studies of the Perception Box.Tiny Blue Dot Foundation strives to help people understand that they live in their own unique Perception Box whose walls can be expanded to minimize suffering, increase acceptance of self and others, and view trauma and other challenges as opportunities for growth.TBD has allocated $9,000,000 to fund up to 10 rigorous research projects related to The Science of the Perception Box. TBD ran similar RFPs over the last two years and funded a total of 23 projects thus far. (Conversation recorded on August 5th, 2024) While the global crises we face are on a larger scale than anything before, there is rich wisdom to glean from past civilizations who have faced existential challenges and survived – or even thrived. What lessons might we learn from history that could offer guidance for our future? In this episode, Nate is joined by social philosopher Roman Krznaric to discuss ways we might govern or lead during moments of crisis, using the lens of former and current civilizations. What lessons have we forgotten when it comes to being in community with and listening to each other? How have our ideas and expectations of the future been informed by seeing history as a story of individuals shaping the rise and fall of civilizations, rather than a collective effort? How could learning from the past to create better democracies, wiser natural resource stewardship, and more circular economies help us prioritize human and planetary well-being? Close your eyes. Imagine a young person you know and care about. Picture them at age 90. And then think about the kind of world you want to leave them. Is it ridden by conflict and chaos? Or is it peaceful and habitable? Such thought experiments can lead us to change behaviour and priorities. But they also have wider application to government and policymaking, says social philosopher Roman Krznaric who wrote The Good Ancestor and is Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University's Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing. Roman's thinking has become part of a push to get governments and leaders to make better policy choices by taking a far longer perspective. That push seems to be bearing fruit. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen may create a portfolio for intergenerational fairness for her next five-year term, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres seems set to appoint a Special Envoy for Future Generations at a summit this month in New York. But how a focus on future generations works in practice raises thorny questions, among them: how many generations of descendants should we plan for, and over what time spans? And how can the focus on future generations be kept separate from controversial ideas like Longtermism and Effective Altruism that are associated with jailed cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried? Also in this episode: Roman introduces his new book History for Tomorrow in which he explores the role of so-called radical flank movements, like Extinction Rebellion. "It's too late to leave the problems of our time to simmer on the low flame of gradualism," he says. "You need the disruptive movements to accelerate things." Neste podcast: Clóvis de Barros volta a falar sobre a Eudaimonia, desta vez diferenciando-a de outras formas de pensar a vida.
In this episode, I travel from Dr. Drew to Eudaimonia to a chicken curry recipe. This is the Rubin Report video with Dr. Drew that inspired this episode. This is the TedTalk video by Jay Kannaiyan I discussed and this is this the chicken curry recipe.
Today on the show we have Suzanne Taylor-King. On the episode today we are going to explore the word Eudaimonia, an ancient stoic term that has profound implications for your modern-day life. We are going to hear a story of a profound turning point led by some sleazy sales that led to an incredible decision in her life. In This Episode: Know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, your vulnerabilities, your content, and how you want to serve your clients really clearly. Help more people get what they want and you will get what you want. It is about their journey and getting them where they want to be. Changing someone's way of thinking about something is so much more powerful than me teaching them how to do something. And so much more!!! You can get "Become Who You Are" here: http://designingthemind.org/becoming It's rare that you encounter a fresh take on a path as well-trodden as happiness. I've read a lot of books on the topic and I have to say that Ryan Bush's take is fresh and yet simultaneously ancient. I think this is part of the reason I'm so enthusiastic about it: it integrates a trend in academic philosophy that I've yet to see anyone else talk about: Virtue Ethics. This is an ethical approach to philosophy that goes all the way back to the ancients especially Socrates, Aristotle and the Stoics. Bush integrates this old esteemed tradition with very 21st century fields like Cognitive Science and neuroscience to produce a thought-provoking map of the good life that I can't recommend highly enough. ____________________
It's no surprise that I'm a huge fan and practitioner of meditation. Meditation has been a part of my life well over thirty years. It offers a wide range of powerful benefits that positively impact both the mind, spirit, and body, leading to improved overall well-being and a whole lot of specific benefits. Here are just a few: Stress Reduction: Meditation is well-known for its effectiveness in reducing stress. It decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol, leading to a feeling of relaxation and calmness. Enhanced Emotional Health: Regular meditation can lead to an improved self-image and a more positive outlook on life. It's also associated with decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety. Improved Concentration: Practicing meditation can enhance one's attention span and focus, making it easier to concentrate on tasks for longer periods. Better Sleep: Meditation can help combat insomnia by promoting relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep longer. Decreased Blood Pressure: Meditation can contribute to the reduction of blood pressure by promoting relaxation, which can reduce strain on the heart and arteries. Pain Management: There's evidence to suggest that meditation can decrease the perception of pain in the brain, which can help those suffering from chronic pain conditions. Enhanced Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills: By clearing the mind and reducing overthinking, meditation can pave the way for enhanced creativity and improved problem-solving abilities. Loving Kindness Meditation
In this show, I try to reconcile the differences between Stoicism and Astrology. There was a time when they existed side-by-side, and it seems they are doing so again today. Both have seen a generous climb in popularity in recent years and I feel they need eachother—well, one needs the other more than the other. I make a case for this in the pod. It's a solo one. I hope you enjoy it. Eudaimonia, virtues, and the work of Sonja Lyubomirsky all point to the idea that true well-being and happiness are achieved through living a life characterized by meaningful action, personal growth, and the development of positive character traits. Lyubomirsky's research provides empirical support for the idea that living virtuously—by engaging in practices that cultivate gratitude, kindness, and meaningful social connections—can lead to a form of happiness that is deep and lasting. This aligns with the philosophical understanding of eudaimonia as a state of flourishing that results from living a life of virtue.

This is the final podcast of 2023. Instead of doing a recap of the year, I've decided to choose the top 3 themes of 24' I've been thinking about, and share what I think about them. It's also a solo show. I know, I attempted to do all of them as solo shows at the start of the year, but had to squeeze a few conversations in there. I felt lonely. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. In this show, I share one of my favorite theories of how astrology works and how such a simple technique can change your life forever. It relates to dreaming. The overlap between dreams and transits has intrigued me from the beginning; I have learned so much from the interplay between the two that I feel it's now time to share a few of my findings. I hope it inspires you to do the same.
