Enjoy this episode as we detailed Rick's incredible experience caddying The Safeway Open in Napa Valley a couple of years back. Who was he caddying for you may ask? It was the ProAM Tournament so that Wednesday Rick was on the bags for Tim Mickelson (Phil's brother) and Bryson DeChambeau. It was an incredible memory as Rick was reading greens and handing clubs to these legends. We then pivot over to the Ryder Cup, a glorious fanfare golf tournament that only takes place every two years. Due to the Global Pandemic, it has been 3 lonesome years since the spectacle that is the Ryder Cup has been played and ....the people are ready. It's Europe vs. USA and the people will be rockin'! Get ready for people decked out in their nation's colors even some incredible fans who dress up like America's fore fathers! Gonna be a treat this Friday, Saturda Sunday! Well, after a week, the PGA Tour is back. The Safeway Open is no more, in steps the Fortinet. Napa, CA, wine country. Pat Perez might just mess around and win this thing. The Ryder Cup teams are now official, and I have to say, the U.S. team is absolutely loaded. I mean, how do we lose? (Important to note: I said that when we went and got our asses kicked in France a few years ago). Patrick Reed is at it again, liking tweets that were directed right at Stricker for not picking him for the squad. Because of course he did. And lots more!

In this episode, I got to go to Silverado Golf Resort to buy a few Safeway Open hats. But the bonus was to get to practice for a little bit of time on the Silverado Golf Resort practice putting green, which is a PGA Tour practice putting green. This was a privilege to be able to practice on because I was not a paying golfer but I did spend money in the golf shop. Anyway, I also got to see some of Johnny Miller's golf clubs from his 1976 British Open victory. Thanks for listening to The Knackered Golfist Podcast.
A few months back, caddie Todd Montoya (Brian Stuard) entered a raffle for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Naturally, Montoya forgot he entered that raffle. He was reminded in a big way two weeks ago while in Napa, California for the Safeway Open when he received a call notifying him that he won two of the raffle items: 1. a pre-paid credit card for $1,000; 2. The grand prize -- a $505,000 dream home. What?! In this episode of 'Under the Strap,' Montoya tells host T.J. Auclair about all the emotions that went through his head when he learned of his good fortune, talks to us about his career as a caddie dating back to 2001, his great nicknames and some hilarious on-course stories like the player who once yelled at his caddie for... sweating.

We are back! As we all moved all over the place, we had some technical planning to iron out, but we are here and ready to go! The Lions imploded, and we break down that game to the fullest extent. We covered other NFL news before transitioning to college football. The B12 embarrassed itself, and we also broke down the teams and players that impressed the most in Week 1 (or 2). And will the Big Ten ever come back? After a brief transition to the golf action at the Safeway Open, we picked the Monday Night Football winners. 47 year old Stewart Cink won the 2020 Safeway Open at Silverado this week. His success comes after his last win which was at the 2009 British Open at Turnberry in Ayrshire, Scotland. His win was a family affair as his son Reagan worked the bag as his caddie. It was also great to get a glimpse of the up and coming Harry Higgs as a swashbuckling Texan whose style of play is a bit more sassy than the average PGA Tour player. His antics included an Albatross on the 9th hole on Friday. This was pleasant to see. Thanks for listening to The Knackered Golfist! Please subscribe and give me a LIKE on iTunes and Spotify.

Holly and Will discuss Hideki Matsuyama's win at the WGC- HSBC Champions event by seven strokes. Matsuyama finished second in the event prior to the WGC. The duo talk about another young talent who notched his first win on Tour, Cody Gribble won the Sanderson Farms Championship by four strokes. In the second segment, Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in to talk with Holly and Will. Bob is a long time Cubs fan. Holly asks Bob about Hideki Matsuyama's win and how he has played lately. When Hideki Matsuyama can putt well, he is a force to be reckoned with. He won the Asian Amateur twice. Holly and Bob talked about Hideki taking a backseat to Jordan Spieth and the others who have dominated over the past few years. Will asks Bob which Major event fits Hideki's game? He is a long hitter off the tee. Bob says that Hideki can win the Open Championship or any of the majors if he could get his putting dialed in. Bob talks about how tough it is coming from Japan and trying to learn the language in the U.S. as well as adapt here is a very tough task for anyone. Holly asks Bob about Tiger's official announcement that he will play in the Hero World Challenge. Also the two discuss Tiger's chipping issues and whether there is any truth to the rumors. Bob talks about how so much clamor over Tiger was made officially announced that he was going to play. Everyone expected him to after he said that he would. Tiger still has four more weeks to get ready for the tourney. Bob said that it was a shame that Tiger couldn't play at the Safeway and get all the media attention surrounding his return out of the way. Bob said to expect a lot out of Tiger's game when he first comes back. It would be silly to expect it. It is going to take some time for him to get comfortable inside the ropes again. In the third segment of this week's show Terrie Purdum, Southern Golf Central Magazine's publisher, calls in from the Villages to talk about the latest issue that is a tribute to Arnold Palmer. Terrie and Turf Life have a booth at all the local tournaments like The PNC Father and Son Tournament and the CME Title Holders in Naples. Stop by the booth and pick up bottles of free sunscreen. Terrie also talks about youth golf sensation Bella Dovhey from Oviedo, Fla, whose interview with The King is published in this month's commemorative issue of Southern Golf Central Magazine (pages 10-11). So when he pulled out of the Safeway Open, Todd says that Tiger wasn't close to being to his level of play that he wanted to be. Todd said that the starts Tiger wanted to have this fall at the safeway, in Turkey and at the Heroes World Challenge were more to prepare him for 2017. In addition, a recent report from The Golf Channel's Matt Ginella informs us that a new 18-hole course could be in play for the already spectacular Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. In the second segment of the show, Todd Lewis, the Golf Channel, calls in to talk with Holly and Will from the Safeway Open. Holly asks Todd what his thought are about Tiger withdrawing from that event. Todd says that anytime the world's most popular player ... the guy who is the most popular in this generation, with 79 PGA Tour wins and 14 Major championships, uses the word vulnerable to describe his game, then you understand that he is not ready to play on the world's greatest stage. Todd said that he spoke with several PGA Tour veterans including Phil Mickelson who said that they have played on Tour when their game was vulnerable. Todd says the difference is that everything Tiger does is very scrutinized ... and maybe Tiger learned his lesson when he tried to come back a couple of years ago. Todd thinks Tiger wants to be completely ready and he is not there at this point. Todd say he really doesn't think it's a body issue or injury. Host and Producer Holly G and The Golf Insiders Social Media Expert, EVVUS, Will Perry, are in the studio talking about the kickoff of the new 2016-2017 PGA Tour season and other golf news. In the third segment, Ted Johnson a journalist who lives in California and also blogs for The Golf Insiders, calls in to fill listeners in on what is on tap for the Safeway Open and Tiger Woods not playing in that event. Ted wanted to know what happened in three days. From the time Tiger committed to the event until the day he withdrew. There are a lot of really good golfers competing in the Safeway. Does it make him scared or does it make him smart? The event was big news and people bought tickets to the event who would not have and now are disappointed that they won't see Tiger. The course requires accuracy off the tee and that is something that Tiger hasn't been that consistent with of late. The course is flat and somewhat tight and not that wide. Ted said keeping it in the fairway is very important playing this Robert Trent Jones course. Holly asks Ted why Tiger may not have chosen to compete in one of the five other PGA Tour events in the wrap around season and instead waiting until the Hero World Challenge at the end of the year. Ted feel that Tiger wants to protect his confidence. Ted says that there are about 40 players in the field that could win the Safeway and that compared to a few years ago when there were a core of 5-10 players dominated the Tour.
