I devote time to considering how Christians should look at Roman Catholics, and why our asssumption that it's just another denomination is skewed. Joseph's warts in Egypt, Jesus' defense of feasting and a lesson on the history and legality of federal welfare programs.
In this third installment of our four-part conversation with 1993 U.S. Women's Open Champion Lauri Merten, we dive headfirst into the emotional and unforgettable week at Crooked Stick that changed her life forever. With raw honesty and captivating detail, Lauri takes us through the rollercoaster of self-doubt, resilience, and unlikely triumph that defined her historic victory.Coming off a missed cut the week prior and wrestling with confidence issues, Lauri describes how a simple shopping trip and a bronze sculpture became her quiet source of inspiration heading into the championship. From early nerves and pep talks from her caddie, Tom Hanson, to clutch birdies and gritty par saves, she walks us through each turning point with vivid recollections—including a dramatic chip-in, a critical bogey save on 11, and her birdie at 16 that sent goosebumps through the gallery. You'll hear how Lauri navigated the pressure, a weather-delayed final round, and the tension of watching challengers like Donna Andrews and Helen Alfredsson fall just short. She reflects on her mindset, her putting drills that paid off at just the right moment, and the joy—and shock—of hearing the final roar when the final challenger's putt missed the mark. With her trademark humor and humility, Lauri also shares heartfelt moments about her parents, her mixed feelings about a controversial Sports Illustrated article, and her plans to finally share some cherished memorabilia with the USGA.This episode is a tribute to perseverance, belief, and the magic that can unfold when preparation meets opportunity. Don't miss Lauri's inside story of one of the most inspiring and underdog victories in U.S. Women's Open history.Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text.Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. In Part 1 of Episode 28, I'm thrilled to be joined by two incredible guys: former Pirates and Red Sox outfielder Adam Hyzdu, and 5-time winner on Tour, now outstanding broadcaster Jim Gallagher Jr. Adam Hyzdu's journey in baseball is nothing short of remarkable. A standout prospect in high school, he left an indelible mark by breaking records, including surpassing Ken Griffey Jr.'s home run record at Moeller High School in Cincinnati. Despite not being selected as the first overall pick or landing with the Reds as he anticipated, being drafted 15th by the San Francisco Giants fueled his determination. Battling skepticism, Adam's resilience led him to remarkable minor league seasons in 1999 and 2000, where he showcased his abilities by combining to hit 61 home runs and drive in over 200 runs. His eventual stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates saw him etch his name in history, with the AA Altoona Pirates who retired his number—a testament to his impact on the organization. From his memorable Major League debut with the Pirates against the Reds to the clutch pinch-hit home run that sealed a victory a couple of weeks later against the Phillies, Adam shares great stories from his time in the big leagues, including his stint with the 2004 Red Sox during their historic World Series season. Jim Gallagher Jr., a beacon of sportsmanship, success, and positivity in the world of golf. Hailing as the most decorated player in University of Tennessee history, Jim's accolades span across prestigious halls of fame, including Indiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Reflecting on his recent honor of inducting his siblings into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame, Jim shares poignant insights into his incredible family and the significance of their shared legacy. From discussing his alma mater the UT Vols' participation in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional Tournament to revisiting his remarkable third-place finish in the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick—a tournament that witnessed the meteoric rise of John Daly—Jim's journey in golf is one of incredible triumphs and fantastic stories. We finish off the segment with Jim's thoughts on what needs to happen to bring the Professional game back together so we can move forward with the best players being in the same fields.
Banter sessions are a part of our DNA. We're back this week with another one of just us two yuckin' it up. We open up and discuss the recent quick trip up to State College, PA to see our boy Mitchell Tenpenny. To sum it up, we ended up in a 5 v 5 basketball game with Pepe leaving with a bone bruise to the knee. For some reason, this is actually funny. We turn the episode over and dive into some recent golf talk. We're headed to Crooked Stick in Indy then rounding out the trip with Troubadour and Old Hickory in Nashville. The episode turns over to some golf talk. We get into some recent rounds we played and talk a little about course management. We hit on the Pete Dye Member Guest and discussed our return after a year off. The Sunnehanna 4 Ball event is a top notch amateur event, which will include us two in the field this year. We round out the episode with some typical banter from the two of us to keep it fresh. Central Indiana isn't necessarily known as a golf mecca, but it's well represented on the national championship stage by Crooked Stick Golf Club and its singular course designed by the legendary Pete and Alice Dye. It recently announced that it will host the 2028 U.S. Senior Open. It last hosted the Senior Open in 2009, drawing nearly 150,000 attendees to Carmel for three days of practices and four days of tournament play. In the last 20 years, Crooked Stick has hosted the 2005 Solheim Cup, 2007 USGA Women's Amateur, 2009 U.S. Senior Open, the 2012 BMW Championship, the 2016 BMW Championship, and the 2020 Western Amateur. This brings us to Tony Pancake, the director of golf at Crooked Stick, who has worked at the club for 21 years. He didn't compete in any of these events, but in late January he was announced as the recipient of the highest award granted by the PGA of America: Golf Professional of the Year. In the words of the PGA, the award recognizes leadership, strong moral character and a substantial record of service to the association and the game of golf. Pancake walks a fine line. He's charged with preserving one of the most significant golf courses in the country while pleasing the club's exclusive membership. He also needs to be sensitive to contemporary trends in golf while remaining faithful to the purpose of the club when it was founded in 1964: to provide a venue for championship-level golf. For this week's edition of the podcast, he discusses the mix of talents required to do his job justice—from a strong grasp of accounting to an instinctive ability to read people's unspoken needs. Golf is a people business, and Pancake explains in detail how the skills needed for success as a golf pro are the same tools needed for success in any business. He also shares a hair-raising story about a last-second trip last year to see his youngest daughter compete in the final of the British Amateur Championship, filled with twists and turns and ultimately made possible by the members of Crooked Stick. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
Jim chats with Tony Pancake, the Director of Golf at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. Tony talks about his 40-year career as a PGA professional, recently culminating in being honored as the PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year for 2024. Tony tells some fascinating stories about his 20 years at Crooked Stick, including a round with Pete Dye during his job interview, memories from the many professional tournaments hosted over the years and more recently how the club honors the Dye-family legacy through the Dye Junior Invitational. Tony is also the father of an accomplished amateur player, and shares tips for raising children in the game. All culminating in a special moment shared with his daughter Annabelle at last year's British Women's Amateur. In Angle of Attack, Andrew, Joseph, and Jim discuss takeaways, follow-ups and observations from the first volume of Angle of Attack, take a deeper dive on Rules and provide a preview of Volume 2. We conclude our interview with the 2004 Women's British Open winner Karen Stupples with a look back on her experience in the majors and the challenges of balancing motherhood and professional golf. Karen fondly recalls representing England and partnering with Dame Laura Davies at the 2005 World Cup in South Africa but the pinnacle of her career team play was at the Solheim Cup where she joined Team Europe as a Captain's pick in 2005 at Crooked Stick and in 2011 at Killeen Castle. After retiring from Tour golf in 2014, Karen turned to broadcasting where she had an early trial run on BBC radio in 2007 before moving to a regular position with the Golf Channel in 2013, finding her niche ably covering women's professional golf in a variety of roles. Karen Stupples wraps up her life story, "FORE the Good of the Game." A Straight Line from a Crooked Stick - Pastor John Wilkerson - Sunday Evening, October 16, 2022 by First Baptist Church of Hammond
Psalm 91:9-16 9 If you say, “The LORD is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Episode 7! And yes, I'm still doing the exclamation point thing. I start off by talking about "Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick" by Zora Neale Hurston. Little updates on myself afterwards; gets a little deep--little bit. All good! Then I have a conversation with my buddy Matt Caputo. He's a writer who's gotten work published in Penthouse, Slam, The New York Daily News, The Hockey News, and he has a new, extensive article out in Connecticut Magazine called, "Is this heaven? No, it's Danbury hockey." Great read, and he's got a bigger project coming that's tied to it. Start a story with, “John Daly…” and you'll most certainly have everyone's attention. Maybe it's the outrageous golf outfits, or perhaps people connect with his physique and penchant for ripping heaters and crushing Coors on the course. Maybe you ran into JD while he had his RV parked at the Hooters down the street from Augusta National one year (and maybe he signed a body part?). Whatever the circumstances, legions of golf fans worship Daly like a modern living god that represents the everyman on Tour. Since he crashed the PGA at Crooked Stick in ‘91 and walked away a winner, the golf world has been enamored with the enigma of John Daly. However, there's a piece to that 1991 PGA Championship story that many don't know and many others just need reminding of from time to time. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. I met the Rev. Dr. Ambrose Carroll when we both traveled to northern Minnesota in early June 2021 to support the water protectors who are resisting the building of a pipeline, called Line 3, that will bring even more dirty tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada to the Great Lakes. We were both there as part of an interfaith delegation in support of the Indigenous leaders who are putting their bodies on line to stop the building of this pipeline that will cut right through the treaty lands of the Anishinaabe people. Ambrose is the pastor of The Church by the Side of the Road in Berkeley, CA. He has a long resume of being a pastor and chaplain. He was a green fall fellow with Van Jones in Denver, CO working on green jobs and environmental justice. He met Sally Bingham, the founder of Interfaith Power & Light, and realized there aren't many Black churches who are part of that movement and realized that has to change.

Today I am talking about Zora Neale Hurston’s short story, “Black Death”. This story can be found in “The Complete Stories” and “Hitting a Straight Lick With a Crooked Stick.” I believe that Zora wrote it in 1925. Now almost 100 years later, we can discover and enjoy these stories. In this story, Hurston uses her knowledge of black folklore and black tales of the supernatural, to tell a story of obtaining justice for a broken heart. This story could easily have been an episode Rod Sterling’s Night Gallery or the Twilight Zone. The antagonist of this story has a name that everyone will find familiar. I will not tell you so you can be surprised like I was. I do wonder about the name’s history and did the entertainer who used it, get the name from the folklore and literature of the time. This story is listed as one of the seven unpublished stories in “The Complete Stories” collection. I think that is a shame because I really like the way this story flowed. One thing I have noticed during this process is the way Hurston paints a picture of the way women are treated. The needs of the women are ignored or openly rejected. Hurston weaves this treatment into her stories narratives, so it is apparent and a part of the world her characters live in. This is terribly similar to the way things are in real life. One key thing I get from this story is the respect Hurston has for the black people in her story. She shows this by the respect she gives the beliefs of the people even when it is something that the white population would laugh at. This is a good read and for fans of supernatural stories, this is a story you will want to read. https://www.ifoundthisgreatbook.com/reading-zora-neale-hurstons-short-stories/

Host and Producer Holly G and The Golf Insiders Social Media Expert, EVVUS, Will Perry, on the eve of the third event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the BMW Championship won last year by Jason Day. In the second segment of the show, Holly G welcomes Jeff Babineau of Golfweek, who talks about Tiger's return next month. It looks like Tiger may play one event a month for the rest of 2016. Jeff thinks Tiger is playing at a pace where he can get himself ready for the Masters in 2017. Will asks Jeff about where he thinks Tiger's mind will be when he returns. He needs to build his game and build his confidence. Holly talks with Jeff about Rory bouncing back and turning his season around on a 15 foot putt for a triple bogey. Jeff thinks that Rory had been lost with his putting even though he was striking the ball so well, his putting was letting him down. It's also good news for Darren Clarke and the young European Ryder Cup team with McIlroy playing so well now. Another guy on the prowl and prepared for the Ryder Cup is Bulldog Patrick Reed who leads the FedEx Cup standings right now. Jeff thinks that maybe the US team might try something new for the Ryder Cup like having some younger guys who are really fired up. Not that the vets aren't but maybe switch it up with some new blood. The PGA Tour is headed to Crooked Stick in Indiana, Holly asks Jeff about the course. He said it's a good track and the players like to play there. Some of the guys who are playing well now played well three years ago. The guy who wins in Atlanta will be your FedEx Cup champ. Jeff thinks that Jordan Spieth will be really focused this week in order for him to play well and make the Top 5 heading into the final event at East Lake Country Club. Babs takes DJ to win this week and solidify his spot in the Top 5 and a good chance to win the $10 million bounty.
