Big Shot
He turned a Florida swamp into one of America's richest cities | Don Soffer

Big Shot

What kind of man looks at 800 acres of mosquito-infested swampland and sees high-end apartments, a golf course, and a luxury shopping mall? In 1967, Don Soffer made the biggest bet of his life: transforming undeveloped wetlands into what would become Aventura, one of Florida's most iconic and extravagant communities. In this episode of Big Shot, Harley and David sit down with the 92-year-old visionary to hear how it all happened—straight from the source. From convincing the Florida governor to back his development plan (after a well-timed flight to Tallahassee) to bringing in golf legend Robert Trent Jones to design a course, Don sold a dream that turned into a $4 billion reality. He built Turnberry resort, launched Aventura Mall, and packed them with celebrities—from Elton John to Madonna and John McEnroe.Decades before “influencer marketing” was a thing, Don was using star power to shape a city.In this episode, you'll hear about:• The environmental pushback Don faced after buying swampland—and how he got the green light from the governor of Florida after chartering a jet and flying to Tallahassee• Don's celebrity-packed playbook: how he used influencers before we even had a word for it• Don's take on why Jewish people have become such successful entrepreneurs• Don's definition of common sense—and approach to solving complex problems with simplicity• Why he says it's a privilege to have a hard problem to solve• His advice for the next generation of Jewish entrepreneurs• And much more! —In This Episode We Cover:(00:00) Intro(02:07) How Don accidentally swallowed his dad's glass eye(03:03) Don's early work building shopping malls with his father(05:01) Why Don trusted his intuition and took a chance on developing swampland in Florida(09:04) How Don got the governor of Florida on board to green light his project(11:00) Early influencers: How Don leveraged the power of celebrities (14:25) Building Aventura Mall(19:27) Don's common-sense approach (21:52) Don's relationship with his father (24:00) Why Don says it's terrible to run a family business(25:11) Don's current roles and how he set his kids up (27:01) Don's explanation for the success of the Jewish people (29:37) A dinner with Frank Sinatra (31:44) Advice for young Jewish entrepreneurs (33:37) Where Don got his confidence and conviction (35:06) How Don saved the Pittsburgh Mall after the excavator destroyed private property (37:50) Don's thoughts on when to sell and when not to(40:05) Don's friendship with Tony Bennett (41:21) How to cultivate strong business relationships(43:49) Don's advice to future generations of Soffers (45:52) Why Don still thinks Florida is a good place to develop (46:42) Closing —Where To Find Big Shot: • Website: https://www.bigshot.show/• YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bigshotpodcast  • TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bigshotshow• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bigshotshow/  • Harley Finkelstein: https://twitter.com/harleyf • David Segal: https://twitter.com/tea_maverick• Production and Marketing: https://penname.co

This week Geoff Shackelford and Lawrence Donegan take at explaining the apparent comeback by the PGA Tour - terrific TV ratings, and the continuing descent of LIV into golfing irrelevance - and conclude it's all down to the Rory bounce. There also a look ahead to this week's event at Philadelphia Cricket Club , the weird DPWT event just announced at Trump International in Scotland. Who is paying for that? Not Donald, we bet. Finally, Donegan has a rant about the British government's disgraceful behaviour in trying to force the R&A to stage the 2028 Open at Turnberry in order to stay in Trump's good books.

This week the boys are scattered all over the place, Ryan is Turnberry, Max is in Cornwall and Marc is in Les Arcs.... so yet again another apology for a delayed episode. Theyve promised that next week everything is back to normal! We hear from Max after that bruising defeat against Gloucester. Max reckons Seb Atkinson was Jonah Lomu, just bumping people for fun while Tomos Williams showed all the skills of Steph Curry. That said Max did get himself a meat pie so every cloud eh.....We get the boys thoughts on Henry Pollock as he picks up his first Premiership try and what a try it was! However they put the skids on any Lions thoughts. Not because he's not good enough but more because the competition is just so intense in the back row. (Does he play prop?)We also look ahead to the Champions Cup round of 16 this weekend with some big ties to look forward to including the ROG derby between La Rochelle and Munster. We also hear what actually went down in Hong Kong as Ryan hung out with an array of the worlds biggest Rugby stars.Enjo! Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The question was raised whether it is permitted to board a boat on Shabbat in order to perform a misva. This was an actual issue for Jews in Turnberry, who wanted to cross the inter-coastal waterway via ferry in order to reach Shul on Shabbat morning. The Halacha clearly states that is prohibited to board a boat on Shabbat, even for the purpose of performing a misva. This is so even if the non-Jew at the helm is not working specifically for the Jews on board. The only exceptions to this rule involve cases in which the Jew boarded the boat on Friday, in order to "Koneh Shevita" (establish dwelling) before Shabbat. SUMMARY It is prohibited to board a boat on Shabbat, even for the purpose of performing a misva.

This weeks show kicks off with a prediction from Mark Allen. He and Nick are playing today (Tuesday 20th February) in the Portarlington Pro-Am in Victoria, and he is determined to shoot 65. Nick is hoping to shoot par given he is out of practise following his recent injury.Nick and Mark discuss 'ambush marketing' where players were getting paid cash to wear hats in tournaments, and they each tell a couple of fun stories about how it worked.Riviera: Mark watched Tiger closely and was impressed with his swing, his walking, and thinks he is well on the way back following the car crash. That said, both Nick and Mark thought Tigers explanation for his shank, a back spasm, was very funny and not accurate. Which reminds Nick of a similar story from Jack Nicklaus at Turnberry when he refused to admit that he had ever 3-putted a final hole. Mark discusses the new Tiger 'Sun Day Red' range, and is unimpressed that there is a hoodie involved. Still on Riviera, Jordan Spieth was DQ'd. We discuss how the rules work now with regards to signing an incorrect scorecard compared to how it used to be. And Nick talks about why he disliked playing Riviera.Hotline rings - and it's an ambush. Talk Birdie To Me listener El Chappo is calling in to ask Mark a very curly question.Mark has a theory, which he has read about and feels has merit, it is to do with the DP World Tour and the PIF. And then we get to feedback, and there is lots as usual - including Patrick who we get on the phone who has some thoughts on Tiger, and a couple of book suggestions to add to the reading list.A great masterclass this week from Nick where he has found something in common with Matsuyama and Daniel Gale's swing. Also unlike other Champion Golfers, Watson was prolific in golf's original Major to an historic degree, with a large portion of his victories in The Open coming while he still disliked the challenge of links golf. One of the most successful golfers in history, and a steely competitor with a tenacious game, Watson accomplished an immense amount on the British Isles in his lifetime. And as the Kansas City native learned to embrace links golf, all while earning a reputation as one of the most gracious and respectful Champions in the game, fans of The Open embraced him in return.   In this brand new three-part documentary, hear from the legendary Tom Watson, his manager Barry Hyde, his friend and Major Champion John Mahaffey and one of Tom's greatest rivals and inspirations, Jack Nicklaus, in an exploration of what made Watson one of the greatest Open Champions of all time.   Listen to the third and final edition of this series, only on The Open Podcasts.

The pandemonium closed in around Phil Mickelson as he walked toward the 18th green at Kiawah Island, where thousands upon thousands of euphoric fans wanted a piece of the history he delivered in the PGA Championship. For all the thrills and spills that have defined his 30 years of pure theatre, his latest act gave Mickelson his own place in the game.A major champion at age 50, the oldest in the 161 years of major championship golf. That final walk toward a two-shot victory was as much stress as he faced over the final hour, and it was a bit scary until Mickelson emerged out of the masses and flashed a thumbs-up."Slightly unnerving," Mickelson said, "but exceptionally awesome."Just like his game.Mickelson never thought he was too old to win again, much less a major. He just didn't have much evidence on his side until a remarkable four days at Kiawah Island where he kept his nerve and delivered all the right shots for his sixth major, and by far the most surprising. He made two early birdies with that magical wedge game that never left him, and then let a cast of challengers fall too far behind to catching him in the shifting wind off the Atlantic.Mickelson closed with a 1-over 73 to win by two over Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen."One of the moments I'll cherish my entire life," Mickelson said. "I don't know how to describe the feeling of excitement and fulfillment and accomplishment to do something of this magnitude when very few people thought that I could."That list didn't include Mickelson. Never mind that he had not won in more than two years, had not registered a top 20 in nearly nine months and last won a major in 2013 at the British Open.Never mind that he was No. 115 in the world."This is just an incredible feeling because I believed it was possible, but everything was saying it wasn't," Mickelson said.Julius Boros for 53 years held the distinction of golf's oldest major champion. He was 48 when he won the 1968 PGA Championship in San Antonio. The record now belongs to Mickelson, whose legacy is as much rooted in longevity as any of the skills that have made him among the most exciting players in the game.Mickelson became the 10th player to win majors in three decades, an elite list that starts with Harry Vardon and was most recently achieved by Tiger Woods.Woods, who won the Masters in 2019 at age 43 after four back surgeries, was among to send a tweet of congratulations.Three months after 43-year-old Tom Brady won a seventh Super Bowl, Mickelson added to this year of ageless wonders.Mickelson became the first player in PGA Tour history to win tournaments 30 years apart. The first of his 45 titles was in 1991 when he was still a junior at Arizona State."He's been on tour as long as I've been alive," Jon Rahm said. "For him to keep that willingness to play and compete and practice, it's truly admirable."Koepka and Oosthuizen had their chances, but only briefly. Koepka was 4 over on the three par 5s he faced when the game was still on and closed with a 74. Oosthuizen hit into the water as he was trying to make a final run and shot 73."Phil played great," Koepka said. "It's pretty cool to see, but a bit disappointed in myself."Koepka also got lost in the chaos and said it was the most his right knee, on which he had ligament surgery two months ago, hurt all day. This was history in the making. No one wanted to miss it.Tom Watson came close at Turnberry in 2009 when at 59 he had a one-shot lead playing the 18th hole and made bogey, losing the British Open in a playoff to Stewart Cink. Greg Norman was 53 when he had the 54-hole lead at Royal Birkdale and failed to hang on in the 2008 British Open.Mickelson didn't let this chance pass him by."It was like the Phil that I remember watching just when I turned pro and it was great to see," Oosthuizen said. "I mean, what an achievement to win a major at 50 years old, and he deserves all of that today."Mickelson finished at 6-under 282The victory...

Yesterday morning, I thought I’d start my programme with another call to rationalise or even nationalise our water and wastewater operations. This is prompted by situations facing Waikouaiti, Karitane and Turnberry who have now been joined by Akaroa.  Towns whose basic necessity, water, has been poisoned by lead and opossums.  They join a long line of shameful water management including our capital. If the government wants a shovel ready infrastructure project to get their teeth into then fixing the nation’s water supply should be at the top of the list. But that was yesterday. Today we’re back in lockdowns.  Called faster than ever before, which caused a strange pandemonium. I have a great sympathy for all the Cafes and hospitality businesses, who suddenly had just minutes to hours to sort their stock out.  Frantically trying to save food before being forced to throw it all out and the money it represents. But I understand the need for health services to crack on.  I’ve always found it strange that having decided a lockdown was necessary we delayed the lockdown for days.  It’s not like the virus takes any time off.  It’s always working 24/7. What I don’t understand is the panicked exodus to baches that occurred. I understand that lockdown is better at the beach but what part of Stay Safe Stay Local do the beachgoers not understand? Are they aware that the locals hate the invasion because of the pressure already basic medical services and supply chains for smaller supermarkets?  Do they not understand that they could be just like the woman at the centre of this current cluster who felt she didn’t have the virus.  That meant she felt free to ravel.  That meant she could have introduced the cluster to New Plymouth. Anyone of the bach refugees could be introducing the virus to retired populations in Pauanui, Whitianga, Keri Keri or Mangawhai. Are the bach refugees also aware of the disdain they’re held in by the people whose businesses are forced to shut down in lcokdowns? Their sacrifices are being ignored.  The exodus completely negates the purpose of lockdowns to halt spread, when Aucklanders are spreading themselves all over the island. Finally, we have a vivid example of why you should scan the codes.  The woman at the centre of this cluster thought she was sweet and took a roadie to Taranaki and neglected to scan.  Leaving the good people in New Plymouth in a state of suspended existence waiting for the worst. Will she be able to remember the places she went in a town she is unfamiliar with? Was it so hard to spend five seconds to hold a phone up to a QR code?
