WUCF's October artist for ‘In the Key of Latin Jazz' is Sammy Figueroa. One of the world's greatest congueros! His work with everyone from Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis to Whitney Houston and the Bee Gees will forever be highly regarded. It was in Florida where he established his solo career leading ‘His Latin Jazz Explosion' band. His latest project pays homage to his late father – Charlie Figueroa – who was known for his romantic boleros.

‘Searching For a Memory' is a truly remarkable album. Released in July, legendary GRAMMY-nominated percussionist Sammy Figueroa brings together a stellar group of GRAMMY winning and nominated friends to musically tell the story of his late father, Charlie Figueroa, a singer of romantic boleros back in the 1950's, one of the best, whose records still sell to this day. Charlie passed away as a young man, when Sammy was just a small boy, as he describes it “a victim of his bohemian lifestyle. “   We talk with Sammy about his remarkable musical journey in ‘Searching For a Memory,' and how the song choices and arrangements allowed him to make his peace. This is an album of cathartic strength, and a backstory takes you on a journey that isn't soon forgotten.

TRACKS 1-Just Kiddin’ 2- Hello and Goodbye 3- Thinking of You 4-Why Not? 5-Not Yet 9-Suite Sandrine Part V CREDITS Michel Camilo Piano Dave Weckl Drums Anthony Jackson Bass Chris Hunter Alto Sax, Tenor Sax Lew Soloff Trumpet Sammy Figueroa, Guarionex Aquino Percussions

Sammy is...........ready for some more comedy. Born in the Bronx, New York, he moved to Puerto Rico at age 8 to live with his grandparents, after his father died, a heavy bohemian. Noticing his love of music at an early age, he decided one day that he was going to be a percussionist, and was able to attend music school in Puerto Rico. One day at age 18, he decided to go hotel hunting with some friends, and ended up landing his first gig. When his band was invited to come play and live at the Piedmont Inn in NYC for two months, Sammy fell in love with the Big Apple, and when the band broke up, he walked into a music department store, Sam Goodies, and got a job, claiming to be a "jazz expert", becoming a manager after 3 years. One day his life changed, when he was invited to tour the world with famous flautist, Herbie Mann, and ended up becoming the #1 call for any recordings in NYC, winning the DownBeat Poll award for best percussionist, and networking himself into the scene. Always one to answer the call, Sammy ended up hanging up on Miles Davis three times in the middle of the night, before showing up the next morning, and becoming his #1 sidekick. After a career working with the likes of Mick Jagger, Sammy's next chapter began when he met composer Michel Camilo and friend Rachel Faro, and began recording his own records, winning Grammy nominations for "And Sammy Walked in" and "The Magician". With South Florida as his home, he has been developing more and more his creativity, hosting a radio show weekly for WDNA, and recently winning a grant from the South Arts Jazz Road initiative, to tour the country, and honor his father with a new album. Passionate about healing the earth and supporting fringe science, Sammy is enjoying his voice and his role, advocating for a more sustainable world, and always, forever, rejoicing, in his story.

Ask anyone who knows me, I've got a deep, deep connection with music. Dare I say...a Soul-R connection with music... And when I uncover an artist I have never heard before, I feel like I uncover a hidden treasure. Jarrod Lawson is one of those hidden treasures. Toiling for years in relative obscurity in the Pacific Northwest, Jarrod hit the scene with his debut album in 2014 and hasn't looked back since. In this conversation, we talk about his rise in the music business, his musical influences, and the magical joy of a live show where everything is going right. During our conversation, Jarrod shares a story about a powerful collaboration with iconic percussionist Sammy Figuroa and how it turned into the title track on Jarrod's latest album. If you want a conversation about music, creativity, and how commitment to your craft can yield great things, this is a must-listen episode. About Jarrod: Formerly held close as one of the Pacific Northwest's best-kept musical secrets, Jarrod Lawson has exploded as an international sensation, garnering awards, performing at prestigious venues and spawning fresh notability for Portland's burgeoning soul/jazz music scene. Ever since Lawson released his eponymous debut album in 2014, the smokey voiced singer-songwriter and virtuoso pianist has been sending positive ripples around the globe with his powerful message music. He has completed six successful international tours with prestigious highlights extending from Rotterdam's North Sea Jazz and the UK's Love Supreme festivals to Java Jazz festival in Indonesia, with performances in Beijing, Melbourne and at Tokyo's Billboard Live. His very first overseas performance was at the world famous Ronnie Scott's Club in London in 2014, following which the Jazzwise reviewer wrote: “With the deafening buzz surrounding this gig Lawson has to show and prove, and he does so and then some, pretty much from the downbeat” Described by the London Evening Standard as “the blue eyed soul boy of jazz”, Lawson followed his debut album with a limited edition vinyl EP “Jarrod Lawson At The BBC”, recorded at London's historic BBC Maida Vale studios and broadcast on the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Show. Lawson won Soul Artist Of the year at the Jazz FM Awards and has been dubbed “the hottest talent to hit soul music in at least ten years” by Echoes magazine. In the US he has performed on the Capital Jazz Cruise and has appeared in leading jazz clubs across the country from New York to Seattle. His second album “Be The Change”, with a new band which benefits from the presence of legendary Grammy-nominated percussionist Sammy Figueroa, also features vocalist Amber Navran and her fellow members of the Los Angeles alternative soul trio Moonchild guesting on “I'll Be Your Radio”. https://www.jarrodlawson.com/ - Website https://www.instagram.com/jlawsings/ - Instagram About Ryan: http://www.royalheartscoaching.com/great-pause/redefining-masculinity - To order an autographed paperback of Redefining Masculinity from me http://www.royalheartscoaching.com/great-pause/qkvtyxh02p59v5igv9i3elzcdohpdp - To order a paperback of The Great Pause https://www.facebook.com/soulrpoweredpodcast/ - the Soul-R Powered Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ryanhallwrites - Royal Hearts Coaching Facebook page https://twitter.com/ryanhallwrites http://www.royalheartscoaching.com/ https://www.instagram.com/ryanhallwrites/ ryan@royalheartscoaching.com Sp --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soul-r-powered/support

David Leach, percussionist, servant to the song and midwife to the muse was born in the shadow of the Manhattan skyline in Plainfield, New Jersey. His love of music was forged in the basement of his parents’ home while his father and godfather told and re-told stories as the strains of Miles Davis, Theolonious Monk and Stanley Turrnentine played in the background. If jazz wasn’t the norm for a young kid, David never knew it. The music spoke to him even then. At 12, David got his first set of drums. He doesn’t remember making a decision about what instrument he would play; rather, the instrument chose him. It was to be the choice that began his lifetime journey into music. In his teenage years David took the opportunity to see as many concerts as possible and two of them changed the direction of his life. He saw Angela Bofill, accompanied by percussionist, Sammy Figueroa, and then the legendary band Earth, Wind and Fire. Figueroa mesmerized him with his array of musical toys that colored the music, and the sheer showmanship of Earth, Wind and Fire convinced him that music was to be a powerful force in his life. Little did he know then, that he would eventually play and record with the venerable group. David went to Rutgers University like any nice, middle-class young man, but knew within days that he had to change his major from business to music. During college he spent much of his free time in New York City, listening to all types of music in all kinds of venues, including the theater. He remembers the magic of discovering how involved musicians were in the success of most Broadway shows, even though they were rarely seen. It was then that he developed the attitude that it is better to be heard than seen; an attitude that has served him well over the years. David graduated with a degree and a hunger to make a life that included music. Directly after graduation he moved to Los Angeles, and as they say, the rest is history. He has circled the globe, playing on six of seven continents, in innumerable countries and with the finest musicians of our time. His joy of music comes out in every note he plays and in every rhythm he creates. And like his musical hero, Paulinho de Costa, he makes it his mission to play exactly what every song needs. No more, no less.
