Playing with fire and gasoline, John created a massive explosion in his home and was burned on 100% of his body. He was given less than a 1% chance to live. His epic story of survival has never felt more relevant, as we experience the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath. At the age of 9, John O'Leary was in his garage playing with matches and gasoline and accidentally created a massive explosion that burned 100% of his body. He injuries were so severe that doctors only gave him a 1% chance to live. He battled through many surgeries and years of physical therapy and did indeed survive. In 2006, his story was detailed in his parent's book, “Overwhelming Odds,” which laid the groundwork for John embracing and sharing his story. Inga Boudreau grew up on a farm in Westerlo, the daughter of German artisans. Her mother, a sculptress, could recreate a Chanel outfit by looking at a picture and she told stories that came from the heart. Her father heeded Will Rogers’ words — “Buy land; they’re not making it anymore — and in 1932, sight unseen, bought a 200-acre farm in Westerlo for about $300. Inga and her sister attended the grade school in Westerlo and then went on to graduate from Berne-Knox High School. Boudreau fondly remembers two of her English teachers: in eighth grade, John O’Leary taught her respect for the English language; in high school, Nancy Hayden told her, “Never stop writing because you gave me chills.” Boudreau never did stop. With master’s degrees from New York University and Columbia, she launched a career in children’s book publishing. In this week’s podcast, she talks about some of the authors she worked with whom she grew to know and love: Maurice Sendak, E.B. White, Madeleine L’Engle, and Tomie dePaola. This show was just convicting for me. When did I leave childlike qualities of questioning the so-called norm and just trying things without worrying what anyone thought? And how have I shortchanged myself in the process? In studying the most successful people of our time John O’Leary cites five key, childlike traits they embody. Traits most of us have left behind. What a great time on the road in the car when I recorded this podcast. I did a Facebook live on a few thoughts from a John O’Leary podcast where he interviewed a TV & Radio guy from Minneapolis, Minnesota - Mike Max who was directly involved with covering some of the unrest there after the death of George Floyd. Bottom line - we are more alike than we are different. We ALL have friends, family and loved ones that we want to come home to every night. This is an amazing podcast that I think you benefit greatly to listen to this show - find it HERE. There is still so much we need to learn about people, to learn about ourselves, about others and I am really wondering why we let people, especially politicians, affect our lives so much. It seems we are divided now even more so than ever in my lifetime. When times of crisis hit (and we are in the middle of a biggie now), those times really reveal people. They reveal compassion and kindness or it reveals some ugliness too. I am challenging myself and you too, to find better ways of making our way through these crises and try to keep working on improving ourselves.
