On the pod this week we have the very funny Sandi Marx! Sandi is one of the most beloved storytellers of the NYC storytelling community! She is a seven-time Moth StorySLAM champion, and had a successful one woman show at Joe's Pub called, "The Sh*t Show." While she's a performer now, Sandi takes us back to her 10 years as a successful talent agent in New York. But before she worked in show biz, she had a tonnn of random jobs! Starting with working in a jean store as a teen, Sandi had to chalk pants for hemming. We talk about the years she worked at the trade shows in New York where she was a shoe model, a bicycle rep, a toy rep, and Wonder Woman in the subway. She did singing telegrams, sprayed perfume in department stores, she's done it all! But it's the gig to be a butt double for Pat Benatar in a music video that has us cry-laughing on this episode. You're gonna love this episode, because Sandi is a gem! Check out all of her stuff online at @SandiMarx3 or www.SandiJmarx.com for more. Also, RATE, REVIEW, and HIRE US!!! And join our Patreon.com/UnemployedPodcast if you have some extra love for us!

You can't sit in the same room as Sandi Marx (either virtually or in person) and not have a smile on your face. Her energy and unbridled enthusiasm for being herself are contagious. If you're interested in hearing more of Sandi's unique brand of personal storytelling be sure to get to her website which has links to her appearances on Risk! and The Moth and to follow her on Twitter Facebook and Instagram. While you're on Sandi's web page, be sure to watch the trailer for The Fabulist the 2020 documentary about her storytelling journey. The 50th Anniversary of the release of Carole King's Tapestry was just a few days ago (February 10th, 1971. Not in "69 or 70" as Sandi guessed). Unlike a bunch of records released in the early months/years of my life (or, in this case, a little before I was born) I was truly unaware of its impact. Tapestry is not only one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, it was the single-biggest selling record of its era. It's also still one of the biggest-selling records ever recorded by a female artist. It was an interesting lesson on my own musical blind spots that I'd primarily thought of King as a songwriter and not a recording artist before doing this story with Sandi. The more you know… As always, I encourage you to sit down and listen to the whole of the song either before or after you listen to Sandi's story. It's a fantastic recording that, if you close your eyes, can really make you a fly on the wall in that room in Queens with Sandi, Rhonda and Strawberry. Also, if you want to hear not only a bunch of 70s easy listening classics (and more modern stuff inspired by 70s easy listening classics) but also a few examples of the amazing breadth of Carole King's abilities as a songwriter, be sure to check out this playlist I put together inspired by Sandi's story.Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.

“What are the chances?” is how it always starts. We bump into a middle school friend in Prague, book the same hotel as a high school friend in Argentina, or end up sitting next to someone from home on a bus in Ireland. When we travel, we sometimes find ourselves running into people we already know but didn’t expect to see. Your brain is shocked because it is breaking your expectations. For a moment, in a time where you have volunteered to be uncomfortable and out of your element, you have a moment of familiarity. Or maybe the same thing keeps happening to you, you see the same person over and over again, hear the same topic come up in conversations, or keep being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But what do these coincidences really mean? Featured Guests: Yann Iunga, Sandi Marx, Sam Dingman Are they just a sign from the universe or us just flipping the least unlikely coin?
Rory Scholl, Sam McKinlay, John Early, Brad Lawrence, and Sandi Marx share stories about making the best of weird situations.

This week, we're presenting stories about what happens when our own brains keep us from being fully ourselves. Part 1: When storyteller Sandi Marx begins to develop cognitive symptoms of lupus, she worries she'll lose the aspects of her personality that she values most. Part 2: Chemist Toria Stafford's untreated mental illness starts to overwhelm both her science and her personal life. Sandi Marx, a retired talent agent, has been touring the country, telling stories, for the past three years. A multiple Moth story slam champ, she has been featured at the Women’s Boston Comedy Festival and regularly performs on shows such as Risk, Yums The Word, Women of Letters, Soundbites, and countless others. She can also be heard on podcasts for all the above and also HotMic with Dan Savage. Most recently, Sandi was featured on PBS for “Stories From The Stage." She is thrilled to be back at Story Collider, her favorite show for brainiacs. Toria Stafford just finished her PhD at the School of Chemistry at the University of Manchester. Her research looks at lanthanides, uranium and other radioactive actinide elements by emission spectroscopy to further understand processes and fingerprint species relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle. She has a passion for science communication, public engagement and women in STEM advocacy, jumping at the chance to take part in events throughout the UK. Outside the lab, Toria enjoys reading sci-fi/fantasy books, watching musicals and eating chocolate. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This episode features veteran storyteller Sandi Marx. Sandi tells us about the home she and her sister built within their house.
Storyteller and performer Sandi Marx is in the guest star chair this episode, and she begins by telling Sharon of her journey from actress to talent agent to performer, and how Peter Weller played a role in it. The two then discuss approaching art without specificity, the times you find out other people think you've got it all together, and how we shouldn't be afraid of being opportunistic. Sandi then talks about being a subject in a documentary before we all decide that we really just want to work with the kind of people we would have over for dinner.
Two years ago we started Singleling, and this January 23rd we celebrated it with a show and party at LPR in New York City. This show features stories by: Sydnee Washington and Calvin Cato, stand up comedians in New York and performing for the first time on Singleling. Sandi Marx, a resident on Singleling, has been on tour with us and has appeared in several of our episodes. Gianmarco Soresi, storyteller and comedian, returning back to our show with one of the most heartful stories on our entire 2 year series. This show we wanted to make it different, for this reason we invited Pavel Rivera, the producer of our theme song, and a great musician. And, as always, the show was produced and hosted by Vanessa Valerio. A dating expert, only because of too much practice. Special thanks to Alex Tabar and Ramon Cabrera who recorded this show. Our show was sponsored by PUERTO VIEJO, Dominican restaurant in Brooklyn, LA LOTERIA, Mexican restaurant in New York City and Pleasure Chest, luxury sex shop in New York City, LA and Chicago. Thank you so much to them for the amazing and generous gifts provided to our audience. And big thanks to you, for keeping us on air for two years!! Happy birthday to us!
