We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Linda Perry. ABOUT LINDA PERRYSinger, songwriter, musician, producer, and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Linda Perry first made her mark as an artist, serving as lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the group 4 Non Blondes, which is best known for the Top 15 pop hit “What's Up?” Following a couple of solo albums, Linda emerged as a powerhouse songwriter and producer thanks to her work on P!nk's multiplatinum Misundaztood album. The debut single, “Get The Party Started,” which Linda wrote solo, was a global smash. She followed it up with another solo-written composition, “Beautiful,” which became a chart-topping ballad for Christina Aguilera that earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Subsequent chart success came with Gwen Stefani's debut solo single “What You Waiting For,” Alicia Keys's “Superwoman,” Ariana Grande's debut single “Put Your Hearts Up,” Miley Cyrus's “Hands of Love,” and additional singles for Aguilera, including the Top 10 hits “Hurt” and “Keeps Gettin' Better.” Recently, Linda collaborated with Dolly Parton on the soundtrack of the film Dumplin', including the song “Girl in the Movies,” which was nominated for both a Golden Globe and a Grammy award. Linda is a four-time Grammy nominee, including a 2019 nomination for Producer of the Year, making her the only solo female producer to ever earn a nomination for their work producing other artists. The long list of artists Linda has produced, collaborated with, or had her songs covered by include Adele, Courtney Love, Cheap Trick, Faith Hill, Britney Spears, KT Tunstall, Weezer, Pat Benetar, Solange, L.P., Joan Jett, The Chicks, Vanessa Carlton, Celine Dion, Elvis Costello, and Lady Gaga. In addition to her prolific songwriting and production activities, Perry is a multi-faceted music industry entrepreneur, having worked as a music publisher, manager, or mentor with artists such as James Blunt, Dorothy, and Natasha Bedingfield.

Dan Navarro Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson They say you can never go home- they didn't have their old pal Dan Navarro on their show––took me right back to shared memories with Chloris Leachman in the living room, the Mets winning a 2015 playoff game at Dodger Stadium (unlike today), seeing Lori Lieberman at The Grammy Museum, Mike Finnegan at The Levitt Pavilion, NAMM hangs, my book launch, a 12 Step meeting, good food, a few of these here shows before and during the pandemic… It's always warm and comfy as if no time has passed. We touched on Dan's early days, his creative parents, his famous cousin, Dave, a horrific family tragedy, starting out on horns, finding his voice, literally, writing songs, being a singing waiter at The Great American Food & Beverage Company, with a host of others who found success, including Eric Lowen, who would become his partner, and begin their relationship co-writing the iconic, We Belong, and selling it to Pat Benetar, before it came to have a life of its own, putting out 12 albums, touring for decades, also writing for the Bangles and others, before Lowen's untimely death. Dan, through it all, also voiced TV shows, including The Family Guy and American Dad, still to this day, as well as over 100 commercials, sang in the films Happy Feet, two Ice Age pictures, Rio, The Lorax, to name just some. The secret to his success? Go for it. Persistence. The only answer is “Yes.” It's worked pretty well for him. Dan told innumerable stories to exemplify his point. A man of service, Dan has served as SAG-AFTRA's National Vice President of Recording Artists/Singers, and is still on the board, he is a Trustee of the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund, is a member of the Mechanical Licensing Collective's Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee, and is on the board of the Artists rights alliance, and recently spoke before the House Judiciary Committee on AI, where, in solution, he has been quoted requesting, the 3 Cs: Consent, Credit, Compensation. Dan treated us to a passionate We Belong, and a gorgeous Rose In the WIndow, his collaboration with the late Preston Sturges from his latest album, Horizon Line. This time with Dan was heartwarming and soul-filling and will stay with me for a long time to come. Being in Dan's good company is always inspiring, always fun, even if we are in the midst of our Mets/Dodgers rivalry. Go Mets! At age nineteen, Duke Robillard recruited Greg as one of the earliest members of what became the Rhode Island based powerhouse, Roomful of Blues. The unifying magnet within the group in its early years, 1969 -1971, was focus on the rootsy, retro, danceable, swing sound of the ‘40s and ‘50s. This “new” sound to teenage ears and the recall of this music to the older folks, filled dance floors all over the band's New England home-base and eventually on the global stage. For the next twenty-four years, Greg Piccolo had amazing experiences playing with and/or recording with such music legends as Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson”, Pat Benetar, Red Prysock, Stevie Ray Vaughan, to mention only a few. As Roomful players would come and go, Greg's twenty-five year contribution evolved to lead singer and bandleader, all the while being noticed world-wide for his signature “fat” tenor sound, unique sax style, and distinguishable vocals. After nearly twenty-five years with Roomful of Blues, Greg sensed a calling to go back to his roots and develop his “heavy juice” sound. This “less is more” approach gave him the freedom to cover the gamut of his musical longings, which include traditional jazz, r & b, and rock'n roll. He had compiled a well of songs which demanded their own arrangements and band configurations outside of the classic “Roomful sound.” In 1994 he stepped away and officially formed his own band, Heavy Juice, which led to his first solo release, self-titled, “Greg Piccolo Heavy Juice,” on the legendary Louisiana-based Black Top label. Following were two releases, Red Lights and Acid Blue, on the famous California-based Fantasy Label (now Concord), and his first all instrumental tenor sax release titled “Homage” on the Pennsylvania-based Emit Doog label. His most recent release, “Who Did This?” is a tribute to his favorite sax recordings and includes an original recorded tenor instrumental. Now at seventy years of age, Greg Piccolo is still practicing his horn every day, writing his own material, and traveling the world with Heavy Juice. Piccolo is an example of someone who has always played from his heart.
Today's guest reminds me that there is some amazing talent out there that needs to be heard. Welcome Jackie Popovec from Youngstown, Ohio's own The Vindys. She's a powerhouse vocalist whose voice is a Venn Diagram of some heavy hitters like Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, & Carrie Underwood. And the rest of the band ain't so bad either. They rock with an early Chicago sound. Think Terry Kath meets Eddie Van Halen with killer horns. They've been around for over ten years now, but Jackie has been singing for a bit longer than that. She and the band started off doing covers and sneaking in an original here and there. Now they're doing their own stuff and throwing in covers you wouldn't think of! But this whole conversation starts off with horror movies. And Spinal Tap. And how Jackie started writing songs. She was in her teens and her dad knew some people in some venues who would let a teenage Jackie play her own music. She was always drawn to belters but hearing jazz greats like Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, & Ella Fitzgerald really changed her approach. The band was poised to record a new album this summer when they were asked to join Pat Benetar on tour. So they made the obvious choice to put the album on hold and explore some new markets opening for a legend. And their live show is amazing! They've written a song for the Pittsburgh Pirates that was picked up by ESPN, they've played with a symphony orchestra, and are on a steady upward trajectory. Check out their music wherever you check out your music. See them on tour this summer with Pat Benetar. Follow them @TheVindys on social media. Check out their YouTube channel for great unreleased stuff. Check us out @PerformanceAnx on social media. Our merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. I'm joined by Nashville's leading film critic, curator and connoisseur Jason Shawhan to discuss THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN. An overtly feminist, covertly queer cult classic from 1985 that deftly explores America's rampant classist bias, unbridled misogyny, protest movements dissolving into marketing opportunities, modern technology's role in amplifying voices of the devalued underclass, the benefits and dangers of our fame-obsessed world and so much more - all wrapped in a a shiny, gorgeously photographed container. Generally dismissed by critics and audiences alike upon initial release, THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN is a true cult classic, beloved by everyone who resonated with another gem of a film discovered by most viewers via home video and cable. Fabulous performances from Helen Slater, Peter Coyote, Keith Gordon, Dean Stockwell and Yeardly Smith (AKA the voice of Bart Simpson and a brilliant score (Pat Benetar's iconic "Invincible" was written expressly for BILLE JEAN and produced by our friend Mike Chapman), this movie's comment on America is as relevant today was it was upon original release .For more Jason Shawhan: https://x.com/jshawhan?s=21&t=2TXy7cSLOHZN-Ef4khov0A http://rebirthoftheflesh.blogspot.com/ Jason & Sam Inglis host FEARLESS PRETENDER- The Only Podcast That Provides Extensive Analysis of Every-Single Film & Television Show Featuring Jennifer Jason-Leigh. https://open.spotify.com/show/17u9DSmsiByQ56LijyERoo Here my guest spot on the episode devoted to the bizarro Rodney Dangerfield classic EASY MONEY https://open.spotify.com/episode/5WVJsIaVmRSx4HfxjtZvm1?si=IRopJVbdQYWytOJ4tWXIGg Participate in future Movie Clubs, support this show and make your life complete by heading to https://www.patreon.com/CraigAndFriends and signing up now! A vital force behind the sound of some of rock's most powerful female artists, like Tina Turner & Pat Benatar among others, singer/songwriter Holly Knight's iconic musical imprint is woven into the very fabric of the MTV generation. Throughout the 1980s, she composed anthems including "Better Be Good To Me, "The Best," "Love is A Battlefield," and many others that have become the soundtrack for millions of people's lives, and created and crafted empowering odes to independence, liberation, and equality. In 2013, Holly was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

So some guy messes up your dope scooter and then beats you up, what do you do? Well, FAIR IS FAIR, so your sister goes to talk to fake Stacey Keach, who tries to get it in and then you shoot him. NOW WHAT? Great question and that's what "The Legend of Billie Jean" is grappling with. This is a realllll artifact from the 80's, the reason for the song "Invincible" from Pat Benetar y'all, and I highly recommend watching it before listening to this episode, because apparently my feelings on it at age 9 and 40 are somehow different (whaaaaaa?). Helen Slater, Christian Slater, Yeardly Smith, Peter Coyote, Dean Stockwell and Keith Gordon in his 8th movie (that we could find, Keith, are you emailing me "My Palikari" and the other missing artifacts). Here's a spoiler: Pat Benetar would refer to this movie as the biggest piece of sh*t. Well, head to https://linktr.ee/wedoingfilmographies and get on the rest of the Gordon movies, 13 Billy Crudup flicks and 10 spooky movies.
In The Warrior, Teal'c is super excited to have finally found someone who can lead his long-dreamed Jaffa rebellion. But things aren't exactly as they appear to be… The name Imhotep will always make us think of The Mummy. Apologies to Brendan Fraser for the mispronunciation of his name. There's also continuing discussions about how the goa'uld still don't know what SG1 look like. But they know their names! It's also kind of sad that neither side is willing to compromise and hear the others out on how things should be done so people don't have to die all the time. There was much rejoicing. All the rejoicing. Too much rejoicing. Apologies again for all the Yu puns. What was Imhotep's long-term plan? Was he going to hide as Kytano forever? There's also a super fun thought experiment from a listener email! Please continue to send us your random thoughts and head canons. We love them. And The Warrior is by Scandal, not Pat Benetar. Randy Jones is a name-dropper. And that's perfectly acceptable because, as the host of his podcast called Jones.Show: Jonesing For Good, he's had some pretty impressive guests, many of whom have become friends because of his uncanny ability to make authentic connections. Among the guests we talk about on this episode are Pat Benetar, Erin Brockovich, Melissa Rivers, and the woman who provided the original voice for Siri, Susan C. Bennett. Episode 40 went out live on 6 Oct 2022 at 19h00 on rebel Rock radio. We kicked off with The Who and 'I'm Free' which was fitting seeing as I have just finished nearly three years of study and now have a lot more time to dedicate to The Story of Rock and Roll. It was a pretty laid-back start by TSORR standards featuring stuff by John Cougar, Black Stone Cherry, and Jimmy Barnes. The pace picked up with Motörhead and when we went to Germany to visit Rammstein and Scorpions with ‘Zwitter' and ‘Wild Child' respectively. The next part of the show covered some classic '70 and '80s stuff from Golden Earring and Pat Benetar. Instead of KISS we took a listen to a Gene Simmons track called ‘Living in Sin. We changed pace with some Billy Talent (no he is not singing “I gave my life to Satan” :-), listen carefully) and Matthew Good Band out of Canada. From there a good dose of Serbian Metal from Claymorean and then my current favourite thrash band out of San Franciso, Hell Fire, by now no strangers to this radio show. Check out their new album Reckoning. The Punk came courtesy of The Clash, Die Toten Hosen, and Rancid, Carnival in Rio (Punk Was) went down very, very well. Pairing George Lynch and Jeff Beck back to back was a great idea, listen out for those solos on the Lynch Mob and Ozzy tracks. We hit the final straight with some great new SA stuff, another band out of the Devo Oosthuizen stable, this week a band called Forth Son South, and then we had Code 106 from their Alium EP. From there some Springbok Nude Girls and classic Fokofpolisiekar. A highlight of the show was a quick little tribute to the amazing Eddie Van Halen who passed away 2 years ago to the day. You'll always be special to me Eddie RIP and thank you for everything. The ending was also very cool, we went acoustic with Rush, off Rush in Rio, and a track called 'Resist' and then Live with ‘Overcome', recorded live in Amsterdam at the Paradiso. we then finished off with a bit of Neil Young and out with Megadeth off the new album The Sick, The Dying.......and The Dead. Grab some oat milk, because this episode is spicy! This week, Kristen and Erika ask a tough question: is procreation morally wrong? In other words, they discuss the philosophical topic of antinatalism: a controversial perspective that argues that “humans should abstain from procreation because it is morally wrong.” We chat through the theory's major concepts, as well as everyone's favorite topics: veganism, depression, and human suffering! (Look, it might sound like you'll need to double up on a dose of Zoloft before tuning into the episode — but trust us, we keep it fun.) It's hard to embarrass me. But when I tagged along with some friends to the theater to see Rocky Horror Picture Show, with the toast and the actors in front of the screen acting out the scenes as they played on the screen, I finally felt true embarrassment. True, inescapable discomfort. This would be...1994? Before I was even born. It wasn't Tim Curry. He was excellent. It was the feeling that people, all these young people, will do ANYTHING to belong to something bigger than themselves. We go from one thing to another. Tim Curry - Paradise Garage (1979) Co-written with DIck Wagner, who wrote or co-wrote Alice Cooper's ballad-ish hits "Only Women Bleed", "I Never Cry", "You And Me" and "How You Gonna See Me Now". Tim Curry - Working On My Tan (1981) Tim Curry - Brontosaurus (1978) Written by Roy Wood for the album Looking On, the first Move album with Jeff Lynne. Pretty lethargic, but the original wasn't that peppy either. Tim Curry - We Went As Far As We Felt Like Going Single (1975) Written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, who also wrote "My Eyes Adored You" and Labelle's "Lady Marmalade" (both 1974). Sounds pretty familiar, doesn't it? Like a cross between "Evil Ways" by Santana and the Labelle song. Maybe they thought no one would be listening in 2022. But they couldn't imagine you and me, could they? 5th Avenue Buses - Fantastic Voyage (1967) From the album Trip to Gotham City. I might buy this one somewhere down the road. The titles all have something in common. It was 1966. It was a fad, but these records were intended to tweak the guilt of parents. A Letter Home - Child in Question (1975) From the record company: What do you get when you mix about a dozen musicians (including members of The Animals & The Police) with a lot of drugs? An acid psych opus! What do you get when you package it in a prefab jacket with stock Christmas art and a festive title? Total confusion! We hypothesize that if you take enough drugs you may think this private press treasure is a holiday album...but we're not so sure. One of the artists was Andy Summers, later of The Police, but he doesn't play on this song. The album cover was just lying around the studio, I guess. They put no thought into it at all, again, thinking no one in 2022 would be listening. Rubber Duckie - A Teenager In Love (1973) 10cc in their nascent stages. Billy Page - Its Pop (1965) Another rip-off attempt. Boy, this comes off as disdain. In fact, there was a whole industry pushing to keep "hippie" culture irrelevant. Soon, the industry would just subsume the entire thing in TV, music, etc. This might be the same guy that created the above 5th Avenue Buses rip-off. This label also featured Don Randi, who played sessions for more artists than you can shake a stick at. Bobby Lyle - Shaft (1975) From Yamaha: Conceived for theaters and similar use, the GX-1 set the electronic keyboard industry on its ear. The first polyphonic synthesizer instrument of its kind, it bridged the gap between organ and synthesizer. The velocity-sensitive keyboards allowed true expression of the voices, a concept never before imagined in electronic organs. The smaller solo keyboard was pressure-sensitive. It weighed over 700 pounds. From Wikipedia: GX-1 voices were "programmed" onto matchbox-sized cartridges. Each cartridge had 26 screw-sized dials on them to change the VCO, VCF, VCA, and envelope of the voice. 70 cartridges in total were loaded into racks that emerged from the top of the console. From me: This keyboard featured prominently on Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door album. And I don't like it. Also, Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key of Life. For example, the string-ish intro to "Village Ghetto Land." I mean, I know what he was TRYING to do. The juxtaposition and all that. Bus Boys - Heart And Soul (1982) For a very brief time, due almost entirely to the ascendence of (and relationship with) Eddie Murphy, The Bus Boys were all over the place in the early '80s. Their schtick was working class, inoffensive, smiling, patriotic, black Rock and Roll. Nothing subversive, nothing offensive. But they were good. This album was their second, and there was just no way to keep this edifice fresh, but I like this version more than the others (Huey Lewis and the News and Exile) but it wasn't enough. Search for their videos on YouTube. They're still around. Gayle Moran - Magic Spell (1980) Grupo Solo - A Real Mother For You (1977) Harry Gullett And The Wheels - The Wondering Man (197?) Jennie Darren & The Second City Sound - River Deep Mountain High (1969) Jenny Darren would record the original version of Pat Benetar's hit "Heartbreaker". A little more convincingly, if you can believe that. Hear for yourself, ya greedy so-and-so. Lance Rentzel - Beyond Love (1971) Lance Rentzel - Lookin' Like Somethin' That it Ain't (1971) On Columbia, no less. A label of prestige and fine taste. And they must have been embarrassed when: From Wikipedia: Rentzel was leading the [Dallas Cowboys] in receiving yards, when he was arrested for exposing himself to a 10-year-old girl. At the time the accusation was made, the press revealed a nearly forgotten incident that happened when, as a Minnesota Viking in September 1966, he was charged with exposing himself to two young girls in St. Paul, and pled guilty to the reduced charge of disorderly conduct. He was not sentenced to jail, but merely ordered to seek psychiatric care. Because of the nationwide reaction and publicity from the scandal, his wife, singer and actress Joey Heatherton, divorced him shortly thereafter. Rentzel asked the Cowboys to place him on the inactive list so he could devote his time to settling his personal affairs.[14] He would miss the last three games of the regular season, including the Cowboys' playoff drive to its narrow Super Bowl V loss to the Baltimore Colts. Rentzel finished with 28 receptions (second on the team) for 556 yards (second on the team) with a 19.9-yard average and five touchdowns. Joey Heatherton was smoking hot. She's on the left. Marty Allen is on the far right. I've played a record of HIS on my show as well. Lark - Rubber Duckie (1973) Louie Pascua - Rama's Song - CCP Dance Company Rama Hari Prod_ Ryan Cayabyab Prince Blackman - Rockers Delight (1980) Return to Forever - Do You Ever (1977) Hard to fathom: An album like this reached Top 30 status on the album chart. It was a different time. Rex Griffin - Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (1935 - 1946) I bet you didn't know that Carl Perkins didn't write this. From Wikipedia: "Everybody's Tryin' to Be My Baby" was written and recorded in 1936 by Decca artist Rex Griffin. On March 2, 1936 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was among ten self-penned tracks recorded that day by the recently-signed artist, accompanied only by his guitar. It was released on Decca 5294 in November 1936 to little notice. Griffin copyrighted it on January 22, 1944.[4] In March 1956, Carl Lee Perkins, who had released "Blue Suede Shoes" the previous December, was working on follow up material at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, and brought in a song called "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby", that he had written. Shortly after it was recorded, Perkins and his brother were in a serious auto accident, and the song and album were not released until May 1957. Perkins was listed as the sole writer when Knox Music, Inc. published it on November 12, 1957. It is unknown, but doubtful, that Griffin ever confronted Perkins, or even learned of the matter, since he died two years later, while the 1950s non-album oriented radio environment prevailed. In retrospect, Perkins contributed a modern arrangement, along with some minor lyric changes.
Ron Dante is a music legend. He's the singer on two massive hits, “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies and “Tracy” by The Cuff Links. He produced Barry Manilow's first nine albums including his #1 hit “Mandy”. And he also produced Cher and Pat Benetar. We talk about his career, including his time doing jingles, and we do a Songfest with his greatest hits. My featured song in this episode is “Ode To Jerry”, from the Project Grand Slam album Play. In Ron's honor I renamed the song for this occasion as “Ode To Ron”. Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. On air indie, from my pad to yours over the airways. Today on the show, the rock band The Metal Byrds from Houston, United States. Lead singer Suzanne Birdie and guitarist Sly Rye share the band's new music off the latest release. Think classic metal rock with a Nirvana edge. Love this band! Thank you for tuning in tonight. Enjoy the show! Cheers! Shay Tracks "Absolute" 11:13 "Life Of The Party" 24:58 From the Band The Metal Byrds band are born musicians. London born Suzanne Birdie, has a power-pop rock voice, that compliments Sly Rye's ripping rock riffs and lead guitar solos in every song! These catchy songs are throwback to a time where female front-women dominated the radio waves with rocking sounds. A time where Hair Bands and Classic Rock & Roll ruled the world. "Our sound comes from our individual influences over the decades. Sly Rye's guitar playing style has been influenced anywhere from classic rock all the way from metal to alternative rock. Suzanne's singing style is heavily influenced by all the great women in rock history. From Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks and Heart. We are not the typical cookie-cutter sounding rock band, and if you listen closely, you will hear a sound like none-other." says the band of creating songs together. The Metal Byrds have received rotation on both international and national online and FM radio stations, and have a fan base that keeps on growing. Currently having three songs from their latest album, that have risen up the radio charts to reach #1, they maintain at least one song on any given time on a top ten chart, every week since the beginning of 2020, as well as being featured on several explosive and popular Spotify playlists that feature other great up and coming Indie Rock bands and musicians. Their fourth full length album, 4, available now online, for streaming and purchase on BandCamp, Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Deezer, Tidal, Napster, YouTube Music, and YouTube.
