The path of every artist is something truly singular and, far enough long, something amazing and often unprecedented. Emily Browning is marvelous example of this as she has found her way in and throughout stand-up, clown, writing, acting, and, yep, balloon art and is bringing all of that together in a very, very special balloon art crowd work special, shooting next month. TCB's Jake Kroeger has an enlightening conversation of how Emily has come to this splendid current moment. One could argue that most christian churches and organizations are "culty" or even proper cults. No argument necessary for the bizarre churches Uriah Wesman grew up in. With their ritual chanting, leaders choosing mates to have lots of children, and ridiculous levels of control over every aspect on one's life, yep. Cults. The very definition. But even as a kid, Uriah was brave enough to envision a life outside with love and joy and laughter. He used his sense of humor to make sense of things and became a comedian and storyteller with a one-man show that has already had 3 sold-out performances. You can see the next show at the Lyric Hyperion on Thursday, October 24. Get tickets here. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scott-okamoto/support

20 years in comedy, done on both coasts with two well received late night sets and Chris Laker has come to an intriguing crossroads in his career where he is calling his latest hour "Toiling in Obscurity". It's not necessarily the self-deprecating angle that you might think the name would entirely suggest, but something much more, if you can believe it, affirming. We talk to Chris about his journey to letting go of expectations and focusing on evolving as a comedian and human being. Director Caroline Suh once was a Louis C.K. fan and then everything came out about his abuse of fellow female comedians, changing her perspective forever. Suh joined forces with co-director Cara Mones to examine the several forces and dynamics at play in comedy/entertainment, often against women, in the fall from grace and very quick rise back to an altered prominence of one Louis C.K. in their newly released documentary from Greenwich Entertainment, Sorry/Not Sorry. They especially hone in on the backlash against the women that came forward, even after #MeToo had been well established as a movement. This week's episode of TCB Field Report talks in-depth with Mones and Suh about their journey and outlook and hope from making this crucial documentary. See Sorry/Not Sorry at Lyric Hyperion on 8/3 and stick around for Abby/Megan/Andy Not C.K. after or go see it on VOD. DAHÉLI HALL is an LA-based screenwriter, director, and comedian. A true hybrid comic talent, she is perhaps most well-known as a writer and recurring guest star, on Netflix's acclaimed comedy series, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, and as a cast member on the Emmy-winning sketch show, MADtv on Fox. Mentioned in the episode:Buddha in Your Mirror: Practical Buddhism and the Search for Self Spadura Show, May 8th at Lyric Hyperion in Los Angeles TakeawaysThe entertainment industry often puts artists in boxes and expects them to conform to certain roles or genres.Booking a network television show can be a thrilling experience, but it can also lead to a loss of creative freedom and a focus on validation from the industry. It's important for artists to be honest with themselves about what they truly enjoy and want to pursue, rather than letting industry expectations dictate their path.Writing can be a powerful tool for self-expression and healing, especially during challenging times.Dahéli Hall's one-woman show, Spadora, became a way for her to explore her own experiences and cope with her depression. Jay Light is a comedian and television writer originally hailing from the fine city of Dallas. He has written for a long list of TV shows. You can see Jay perform all over the country, including regularly at The World-Famous Hollywood Improv. He also hosts WRONG! A Dark Comedy Game Show which you can see in a city near you! A lot was discussed in this episode. Normally when I go into producing these, I have a vague idea of where it could go. This conversation pivoted quickly into a passionate discussion was Jay Light's argument to as why both comedians and industry would benefit from having a stand-up comedy union (a conversation I did not expect to have but boy am I glad we did!). We discuss how wages for features and headliners have remained the same literally since 1979 not adjusting for inflation one bit, how normalized it is for producers in LA to not pay comedians for ticketed shows with item minimums, the power of collective bargaining, the disappearing stand-up comedy middle class, a fairly recent and successful strike to get wages increased for club performers and emcees in New York City, and a lot more on the matter. I record these episodes on average a month before they are released, and let me tell you, they have shapped every discussion I've had with comedians going forward. Believe it or not, many of my peers have felt similar frustrations. That being said, Jay Light is smart, opinionated, fearless, and frankly, one of the most punk rock people I know in comedy. He is also an artist by every definition of the term and I've enjoyed watching him develop from when we first met. (which incidentally, I met him when he hosted a Potluck when he was a door guy at The World-Famous Comedy Store once-upon-a-time ago and we talk about that too!) We also talk about the power of taking risks industry are reluctant to take on creatives, the importance of giving back, the power of community, what community did for the Roast Battle, really why comics should always be writing and how so many have no idea how to write jokes yet, the difference between art and commerce in the social media era, and so much more! There are many folks that make the magic of comedy really snap and pop and one of those groups of people are the technical directors/operators/stage managers that take the logistics of comedy of all ilks and make it seamless. Jimmy Jatho has made himself one of the foremost names in that regard with his 40 plus years experience, tech'ing at least a guess-timated 30K shows all around the country in theaters big and small, Second City, UCB, Lyric Hyperion, and so much more. Also, Jimmy has some of the best showbiz stories to boot. We talk to Jatho all about the world of tech in comedy and so much more on this week's TCB Field Report. Not that this podcast is a stranger to taking big swings or chatting with characters that might as well be from another galaxy, but, for a podcast that ostensibly pulls back the curtain, we go above and beyond with this episode by devising a show with a comedian live on tape. If you haven't gathered in recent episodes, TCB's Jake Kroeger is now also the Artistic Director at Lyric Hyperion and tapped the hysterical Ian Farley to do a show next month and captured the creative process of working out what the hell his show is going to be on a podcast. Ideally, coming up with this show is this crackling and fun (part of the reason we have Ian both on the pod and doing a whole show by himself).
