On this episode, Marc talks to Bill Sassenberger, author of “Toxic Shock Records - Assassin of Mediocrity: A Story of Love, Loss, and Loud Music,” published in the spring of 2024 by Fluke Publishing. Bill and his wife Juliana ran Toxic Shock Records from the late 80s up until about 2012 - it was a store, a label, a distributor, and tour booker, and much more.Bill's book is both a personal memoir and a history of his business, as well as a diary of his time with Juliana after she had a stroke in the early 2010's. Julianna passed away before Bill wrote the book, but he includes her voice via an interview she did, which he puts right after his introduction. All together, this is a compelling portrait of two people who worked hard to get deserving music heard. As Bill writes, “We preferred to work behind the scenes. Much to our chagrin, it was this fact that probably kept us from being more successful in a business where who you knew led to your success or failure. It was just us against the world and we preferred it that way.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Bill Sassenberger!

TOXIC SHOCK, 9min., Canada Directed by Jamie Norrie Tatiana wakes up confused about where she is, what happened the night before, and why there's a gorgeous man sleeping next to her. She discreetly makes her way to the washroom to avoid disturbing her mystery partner, until she discovers an unwanted surprise. She hurries back to the bed and finds out that her worst nightmare has come true. She's left a giant red period stain on the bed. Suddenly, Tatiana feels like a criminal in a crime scene and does everything in her power to hide the evidence. Despite her best efforts of hiding the stain, it only gets worse. She ends up calling her best friend Sarah to come to the rescue. Just as she's about to escape, Tatiana realizes that maybe she's not so guilty of a crime after all. https://www.jamienorrie.com/toxic-shock https://www.instagram.com/toxicshockfilm/ Get to know the filmmaker: Toxic Shock is actually loosely based on a true story, where I was the one who got my period at the worst possible time, while sleeping next to a guy I was seeing. It was always something I thought I would never recover from if it actually happened in real life. I thought I would actually pass away from humiliation, but to my surprise, the guy I was seeing was totally comfortable with it. I was so relieved to find out that the fear that I had built in my head turned out to be over something so normal, and I actually began to feel frustrated that I ever cared so much over something so normal. After processing all these new feelings, the idea of Toxic Shock, a story of a cute romantic comedy about getting your period during a one night stand, was born! Live from the No Panic Zone—I'm Steve Gruber—I am America's Voice—God Bless America this is the Steve Gruber Show— flirting with the label of Domestic Terrorist every time I tell the truth—I am willing to take that risk for you! In the fearless pursuit of the TRUTH! Nothing else matters! Here are three big things you need to know right now— ONE— Most Republicans agree with Mike Pence and NOT Donald Trump when it comes to what happened on January 6th— TWO— Far Left Democrat operative David Axelrod—says its time to dump the stupidity and stand with parents across America— THREE— The death spiral of the Democrat Party will be front and center today—all day— The progressives have lost touch completely with the Middle Class—they have lost the support of working people—they have lost the support of union folks—they have not only lost the support of truck drivers—but mechanics—and carpenters—and electricians—and school teachers too—they just don't say much because they don't need the grief of the teachers unions they also despise— In fact the Democrat brand is so Toxic today—that most on the life living in rural America won't even admit the fact in public—the small café's and gathering places like the VFW or the Eagles Clubs and Moose Lodges in small towns would just as soon—toss out dues paying members if they admitted to being Democrats— The left has lost the middle—and that my friends is a fact—in fact there really isn't a Middle anymore—there is the far left—and there is the rest of us— Common sense—and common decency were abandoned somewhere along the line by the likes of Adam Schiff—Nancy Pelosi—Eric Swalwell—and now Chuck Schumer—Bernie Sanders and even the decrepit old man crapping his pants in the Oval Office—and yes—make no mistake he is— The Media—the legacy media sold their soles as well—when they decided to stop reporting the news and start pushing propaganda like the regimes of China—North Korea and more recently Canada— They have ZERO credibility—right along with their socialist handlers in government— The Democrat Party is so Toxic it is experiencing Toxic Shock—and it killing itself—but only until November 8th when American voters kill the reckless socialist agenda for the last time— The Democrats are going the way of the Whig Party in 1860—buried in its own failures for the very last time—

Within this episode we take a deep dive into a fatal infectious disease topic- toxic shock syndrome. Written by Dr. Hosay Said, reviewed by Dr. Tim O'Shea (Infectious Diseases) and Dr. Leslie Martin (General Internal Medicine). Infographic by Rachel Ahle.
It’s been a week since Oprah’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry— whose dads each deserve their own wings in the Disappointing Fathers Hall of Fame—and there’s still much to discuss. This week’s episode of Daddy Issues is dedicated to examining the interview and its noble aftershocks and wider cultural implications. We discuss the rib-crushing patriarchal corset still tightly laced around members of the Royal Family, Meghan and Harry’s sensible request that their family not allow their murders, Thomas Markle’s iconic “Images of Britain” staged photoshoot, and Prince Charles’ Tampax fantasies. We will not be silent or silenced!

Dr Bryan Betty is medical director of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. His opinion piece is titled 'Toxic shock: A health warning- sugar is killing us'."It is now estimated that 11 percent of the world's (and New Zealand's) total health budget is spent on diabetes, the majority related to Type 2 diabetes – a disease that can be treated early with diet, exercise, and the use of medications."There's one simple thing that everyone can do to lower their risk of diabetes: cut down sugar. I'm not talking about a revolutionary lifestyle change overnight (although by all means, go ahead) but there's one thing you can do today – that everyone agrees on – to improve your health, and that's to stop drinking sugary soft drinks."He told Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford that, as a nation, we must reduce our reliance on sugar in our food, we need further education and a possible government intervention with a sugar tax because the cost of our continued addiction is too high to society and our children.LISTEN ABOVE

Everything To Guppy is a bite-sized, four-times weekly comedy/gaming podcast in which Gary Butterfield (Watch Out For Fireballs) and William Hughes (The A.V. Club) attempt to analyze every single item, boss, character, and concept in the rogue-lite video game The Binding Of Isaac. They manage to pull it off only slightly less than 50 percent of the time.
This week we have an edited version of a recent Meet the Journalist talk from the University of Technology featuring ABC's Fran Kelly. The interview was conducted by UTS student Myles Houlbrook-Walk and covers much of Fran Kelly's career and her time at community radio and her time fronting the band Toxic Shock.
In 1978, doctors in Denver, Colorado observed several healthy children who suddenly and mysteriously developed a serious, life-threatening illness with no visible source. Their condition, which doctors dubbed ‘toxic shock syndrome' (TSS) was rare, but observed with increasing frequency over the next few years in young women, and was soon learned to be associated with a bacterium and the use of high-absorbency tampons that had only recently gone on the market. In 1980, the Centers for Disease Control identified Rely tampons, produced by Procter & Gamble, as having the greatest association with TSS over every other tampon, and the company withdrew them from the market. To this day, however, women are frequently warned about contracting TSS through tampon use, even though very few cases are diagnosed each year. Historian Sharra Vostral's Toxic Shock: A Social History (NYU Press, 2018) is the first and definitive history of TSS. Vostral shows how commercial interests negatively affected women's health outcomes; the insufficient testing of the first super-absorbency tampon; how TSS became a ‘women's disease,' for which women must constantly monitor their own bodies. Further, Vostral discusses the awkward, veiled and vague ways public health officials and the media discussed the risks of contracting TSS through tampon use because of social taboos around discussing menstruation, and how this has hampered regulatory actions and health communication around TSS, tampon use, and product safety. A study at the intersection of public health and social history, Toxic Shock brings to light the complexities behind a stigmatized and under-discussed issue in women's reproductive health. Importantly, Vostral warns that as we move forward with more and more joint replacements, implants, and internal medical devices, we must understand the relationship of technology to bacteria and recognize that both can be active agents within the human body. In other words, unexpected consequences and risks of bacteria and technology interacting with each other remain. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

My U.K. shorty asked me to do a show about toxic friends and family during the holidays. That's easy for me. Christmas for ME was always about giving. Christmas was NEVER about receiving. If my list didn't include a reason to make you smile... it's likely because we're not close at this time. I love cards, so I at least try to send that to wish them well in the New Year. Understand your family can be demons too. You do NOT have to deal with them just because its December 25th. Yall know Jesus was NOT born on that day anyways.

Grab yourself a plate of melons and a heaping cone of fagabefe because this week, for our 69th episode, we invited the fabulously talented Bettina McKelvey and Emily Shahan from Toxic Shock and the brilliantly hilarious Kevin Clarke and Travis Vogt of The Conversation Pieces podcast to join us in analyzing the bafflingly mean-spirited ensemble scavenger-race comedy, Midnight Madness (1980). Incoherent conviction, chaotic activity, and an odd inability to remember who Harold is, this week on Ex Rated Movies!

Right after recording the 3 Ninjas Kick Back [Drunken Commentary], Mac and Zach unintentionally recorded what would become the third installment of SCUMBAGS!! Now in an all new dimension! Check out how your booiis Mac and Zach are actually more focused and less funny when they're not sober as they talk about stuff they're planing on hearing about at the upcoming e3, how they're already in the process of rebooting Resident Evil movies just months after ending the series, the upcoming re2 video game remake, rumors of next generation consoles already?, the new Friday the 13th video game, Zach's thoughts on PREY, the new Halloween movie directed by the guy from Eastbound & Down and produced by John Carpenter, the new Alien movie, a puppet master reboot, the Devil May Cry series, Indy games being more exiting than the triple AAA ones, what's the point of pre-ordering games these days?, new dlc for Shovel Knight, the upcoming chucky movie, and much more useless information! [IMPORTANT NOTICE] The part of the experiment that failed. After finishing the 3 ninjas: High Noon At Mega Mountain Drunken Commentary, Mac and Zach decided not to quit while they were ahead but instead try to capture the lightning in a bottle two times in a row. What proceeded is a shittier less funny/ entertaining version of what happened with 3 Ninjas.
