Today I'm excited to have another incredible, multi talented female NFT creator in the space on stage with me. She has wrote, compose, and produced over 15 musical projects since 2014 and her work has been featured by Microsoft as well as in multiple theaters. Beyond music, she is also an incredible writer and her articles have been featured in CRACK Magazine, Tom Tom, and The Seattle Weekly. She is also a constant voice on Twitter Spaces and advocate to empower and fight for underheard voices in the NFT Space. I don't know if there's anything she can't or hasn't done to be honest. It's my honor to share the stage with the one and only SassyBlack!

On December 1st, 2006, Rahwa and Asmeret Habte took over Hidmo on 20th & Jackson. In a very short amount of time, Hidmo became known as a community center cleverly disguised as an Eritrean restaurant in Seattle's Central District, and a mecca for Seattle hip-hop. The space Rahwa and Asmeret helped create along with their family and friends became a safe space for youth in the neighborhood, an organizing hub for a large amount of community organizations in the city, and an all-ages venue for musicians who had very few venues accessible to them. Hidmo brought together community in a way that very few venues in our city ever have, and what happened those 4 years on 20th & Jackson can still be felt throughout our community, and the world today. Rahwa tragically passed away earlier this year, and in honor of her legacy and the legacy of what she helped build, we brought together a playlist of some of her favorite artists who have graced the hut, along with personal memories shared from the artists themselves, including Blue Scholars, THEEsatisfaction, Khingz, JusMoni, Hollis, Shabazz Palaces, Meklit, Invincible, Dakota Camacho, Beyond Reality, Siren's Echo, One Be Lo and more. 1. Blue Scholars - The Distance (feat. Rahwa Habte & Semone Andu) * words from Prometheus Brown 2. Khingz - Blaq Han Solo (feat. Rahwa Habte on the outro) * words from Meklit 3. Meklit - This Was Made Here * words from Dakota Camacho 4. Dakota Camacho - Hita (unreleased) * words from Imani Dinish 5. Invincible - People Not Places (feat. Sabreena da Witch) * words from Invincible 6. One Be Lo - Books a bout you (HisStory) * words from Stas THEE Boss 7. Shabazz Palaces - Capital 5 (Recorded After Hours at the Gun Ballad Resource Center on Sweeper St.) 8. THEESatisfaction - EEN SAH EWE * words from SassyBlack 9. Vitamin D - Home Don't Feel Like Home (feat. Yirim Seck & Game Solo) 10. Hollis - All My Weight * words from JusMoni 11. JusMoni - Never Too Late (feat. Khingz) 12. Chev - Universal Branches * words from King Khazm 13. Black Stax - River 14. Beyond Reality - Souls Journey (feat. Felicia Loud) * words from Kylea 15. SassyBlack - "Therapy" from the 2020 self-released EP Stuck. Throughout her career, Seattle's own SassyBlack has tackled the topic of mental health, from her 2019 song “Depression” and the accompanying short film released early in 2020. On her latest EP Stuck, and today's featured track, in particular, she continues the conversation around self care, encouraging listeners to reach out when they're feeling "nothing at all," repeating the lyric "lay it on me" in a soothing rhythm. In conjunction with KEXP’s Music Heals: Mental Health, we’re asking Song of the Day artists to spotlight a different organization, and in a perfect complement to today's Song of the Day, SassyBlack chose the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective, a "collective of advocates, yoga teachers, artists, therapists, lawyers, religious leaders, teachers, psychologists and activists committed to the emotional/mental health and healing of Black communities." Learn more about the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective here. Donations are accepted here. Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SassyBlack is an independent musician and educator, and a staple in the Seattle arts scene. After signing to Sub Pop at age 23 with her former duo THEESatisfation, she continues to evolve as a solo artist and this year was featured on Michelle Obama’s official Spotify playlist. She’s out with a new EP, ’STUCK,’ which addresses mental health, working for free in the music industry, and the “Karen”s of the world. "Phew, that felt good." "Wow, 30 seconds goes by real fast." "I actually really needed this." A few weeks ago, we asked you to send us 30-second voice memos with your anger about harassment and bullying you've experienced at work—and the advice you'd give your younger self about what you don't have to put up with. And you all were ready to vent! You sent us stories about sexism and racism, physical harassment and psychological abuse, from bosses and co-workers male and female alike. Some of you were thinking back on things that happened to you decades ago; some of you are right in the middle of figuring out how to deal with a bad situation. One thing was clear—lots of you feel like you haven't been able to talk about this before. So this week, we're bringing you a supercut of your stories, and your anger. Let's rage. If you're currently dealing with harassment or bullying at work, click here for a list of resources you might find helpful. And for even more rage, check out today's new episode of the podcast For A Bad Time Call—it's a special episode devoted specifically to workplace anger. Special thanks to SassyBlack for composing original music for this episode. You can find more of her work here.

Another disclaimer of this being someone I respected a lot and really liked the work of and so made me nervous and incapable of just being a normal person while speaking. She had just been on tour with the newly reunited Sleater-Kinney and her latest EP had been reviewed on Pitchfork. I haven't listened to it since it aired, but I can't imagine me coming off great. Original Description: Holy shit! Today is packed solid with greatness. First is some music and conversation with psychedelic funk insanity maker, SassyBlack!
