Barbara Minton is a psychologist and musician who creates neuroscience-informed music designed to support and heal the brain. In this episode, we explore the relationship between music and the brain, and how we can use it to guide or change our mental and emotional states. We talk about how music affects the brain, the difference between making it and listening to it, and why different genres influence us in different ways. We get into transcendent and altered states, how music can support grief, loss, pain, insomnia, and emotional processing, and how individual differences like ADHD or PTSD shape the nervous system's response. We also look at music as a tool for social connection and the unique experience of creating and playing music with others. We discuss how different instruments feel to play, what makes the guitar and pipe organ special, and how music ties into memory. We explore how to use it deliberately to enhance learning and recall, why our emotional reactions to songs change over time, and how lyrics shape the way we see the world. We also explore why certain genres explode at particular moments in history, why pop music remains so consistently popular, which musical elements most strongly affect the brain, what it feels like to make and play music, how live music differs from recorded music, and the overall healing power of music.Connect and Learn MoreWebsite: musicandhealing.netAlbum: Calm the Storm LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/barbara-minton-057957164RESOURCES People: Ana Lapwood, Aretha Franklin, Calum Graham, Freddie Mercury, Hans Berger, Peppino D'Agostino, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Wolfgang Amadeus MozartSongs: Amazing Grace, Pavane for a Dead PrincessStudies: Contrasting effects of music on reading comprehension in preadolescents with and without ADHD (Madjar et al., 2020), Human song: Separate neural pathways for melody and speech ( Hamilton, 2022)

Send us a textToday's guest is someone whose life and career are deeply intertwined with the heartbeat of rock and roll history. Laurie Kaye is a legendary music journalist and producer whose voice was once heard across the nation on iconic stations like KFRC in San Francisco, and whose writing helped shape landmark radio specials—including The Beatles: From Liverpool to Legend. But Laurie isn't just a chronicler of music history—she's a witness to one of its most tragic moments. On December 8, 1980, she sat down with John Lennon and Yoko Ono for what would be John's final interview—just hours before his death. That experience, and the haunting encounter she had immediately afterward with Lennon's assassin, shaped the course of her life. Laurie tells that story in her powerful memoir, Confessions of a Rock 'n' Roll Name-Dropper, where she shares not just the names, but the soul of the music and artists who saved her—and in turn, how music can truly save lives. In today's conversation, we delve into the healing power of music, the significance of storytelling, and what it means to bear both the joy and weight of being part of history.LAURIE's BOOK:Website: confessionsofarocknrollnamedropper.comBuy it on AmazonIf you enjoyed this episode, please FOLLOW, RATE, REVIEW & SHARE!! Titled "Harmony for the Soul: How Music Heals and Calms Anxiety," this discussion is inspired by my own experiences with music and its transformative effects. I invite listeners to explore how music can serve as a powerful tool in managing anxiety and stress, and I emphasize the importance of finding the right music that resonates personally. Starting with a quote from Bono, I highlight music's ability to change lives on a personal level, reflecting on how certain melodies can evoke feelings of calmness and security. I recount my childhood memories of my father playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, a piece that particularly moved me and has been shown to have physiological benefits such as decreased heart rates and improved oxygen saturation. This personal connection leads to a broader exploration of how music can be seen as medicine, a source of healing that many may overlook. I dive deeper into the psychological effects of music by discussing its role in mood regulation and enhancement. Music is a versatile emotional tool that can uplift us from sadness or provide solace during anxiety-ridden moments. The concept of emotional contagion is introduced, explaining how our emotions can be influenced by the music we choose to engage with. I also introduce the ESO principle from music therapy which involves matching music to the listener's current emotional state, gradually adjusting it to influence change, underscoring the idea that music can lead us precisely where we need to go. The episode further explores the physiological benefits of music, such as its capacity to lower cortisol levels, reduce heart rate, and induce relaxation. I discuss how slow, calming music can alleviate muscle tension and act as a distraction from stress, promoting mindfulness and enhancing present-moment awareness. Several methods for incorporating music into relaxation routines are provided, such as creating calming playlists for bedtime or using nature sounds as an auditory backdrop for meditation. From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
“I felt as empty as a drum,” says Molly Carr, a Juilliard-trained, world class violist. It was a career she had worked her whole young life for. She travelled the world and performed on some of music's most iconic stages. From Carnegie Hall to the Kennedy Center, Molly has shared the stage with some of the world's greatest musicians and yet, “the constant focus on career and the fear that it could all go away,” sucked the joy from the instrument and the music that she had loved since she was a little girl. When a shattered glass bowl made it impossible for her to play, she found herself searching for a way to make meaning of her life. A chance experience with a late stage Alzheimer's patient changed all that and opened her up to a new way of using the gifts she had been given. As she sat at the bedside of Ruth, the late stage Alzheimer's patient, she promised her that if she could ever play her instrument again, she would return with some of her friends to play for her. Six months later she made good on that promise, and Project: Music Heals Us was born. From prisons to hospitals and refugee camps, Project: Music Heals Us brings the healing power of music to some of the darkest places in our world.Under the direction of Dana Martin, Project Manager for the Music for the Future Program, PMHS recently completed a seven week program with the Sonoma County Jail in Santa Rosa, CA. participants earned certificates and school credit for their participation as part of a new pilot project with the Juilliard School in New York City, NY.Dana Martin, Project Manager, Music for the Future, Prison Programs, PMHUMolly Carr is the founder and artistic director of Project: Music Heals Us. I spent my late teens, 20's & early 30's in a rather unwell mental state. I was roaring through the world like a tornado, generally unaware of how my behavior was regularly harming those around me and equally harming myself in ways that had me in a viscious cycle of self abuse.Although I knew something was "off" with my mental health, I honestly didn't know what to do about it. So I drank and drugged my way through most of it, and when that made things even worse I drank and drugged more! That went on pretty much until my life hit a serious bottom on December 19th of 2000. Shortly thereafter I consciously embarked on a journey of recovery and self discovery which introduced me to the concept of mental wellness!! Since then I've been on an upward trajectory that has taken me places, emotionally and physically, that I never thought possible. One of the most important lessons I've learned thus far is that my mental health MUST matter to me! It's wonderful if it matters to others but MOST IMPORTANTLY is that it matter to me because if I'm not motivated to work on myself then it doesn't matter what others may have to offer. In this episode I share about what a fantastic adventure I've been on since making MY mental health a priority, along with sharing ideas that may be helpful to you. My mental wellness journey has allowed me to grow and heal in ways I never thought possible AND by caring for myself I've been able to be there for others who are hip to hopping on the positive mental health caravan ;) If you happen to be struggling in the mental health department I hope you hear something that inspires you to keep moving forward. YOU ARE WORTH IT!! WE ARE WORTH IT :) P.S. My "episode artwork" was taken shortly after a recent ketamine infusion at Future Psych Ketamine Clinic in Myrtle Beach, SC. They, along with Mandy at High Country Wellness & Infusion in Frisco, CO, have been instrumental in supplying me with a life saving & life changing option for mental health medicine. I am profoundly grateful for what they, and all the other respectable clinics are doing for those struggling with trauma, ptsd, and depression related mental health issues. **DISCLAIMER: Please take note that any references to ketamine infusions or any other form of medicinal treatments, mainstream or non mainstream, are strictly meant to provide an insight into my own experiences. That being said, should you find yourself curious about anything spoken about on my podcast I firmly suggest speaking to a doctor/psychologist/therapist/family member/psychiatrist/etc. before making any decisions. THE POWER OF LEONARD COHEN'S MUSIC DURING DIFFICULT TIMES We are inching closer to the shortest day of the year which means the most darkness - many of us struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder - and the news of war and strife only makes matters worse. A Poem of LOVE ❤️ Thandavam .Music Heals
Yo-Yo Ma and the Surgeon General continue the conversation about the power of music. Yo-Yo reflects on how music was an antidote to his father's loneliness while trapped in Paris during WWII, and how Yo-Yo shared his music to comfort people during the pandemic. Continuing with personal stories about connection, the conversation turns to parenting, why it seems harder for men to connect, and what Mr. Rogers taught both of them. They also talk about why connecting to yourself is so important, and how Yo-Yo does that through practicing what he calls “The Beginner's Mind.” If you enjoy the art of conversation, this episode will be music to your ears. It will build up what Yo-Yo Ma refers to as your “emotional bank account” and bring about a sense of hope. (02:04) How Yo-Yo's father turned to music to address loneliness (07:14) How Yo-Yo's childhood informs his parenting (12:15) On men & loneliness (15:32) Lessons from Mister Rogers (20:26) How did Yo-Yo Ma use music to help people during the COVID-19 pandemic? (24:03) The importance of the Beginner's Mind (26:55) On burnout (33:57) What are you grateful for? (38:38) What are Yo-Yo Ma and the Surgeon General reading these days? (42:02) What gives Yo-Yo Ma hope? For more episodes, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls. We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. Whether performing new or familiar works for cello, bringing communities together to explore culture's role in society, or engaging unexpected musical forms, Yo-Yo strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity. Most recently, Yo-Yo began Our Common Nature, a cultural journey to celebrate the ways that nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Our Common Nature follows the Bach Project, a 36-community, six-continent tour of J. S. Bach's cello suites paired with local cultural programming. Both endeavors reflect Yo-Yo's lifelong commitment to stretching the boundaries of genre and tradition to understand how music helps us to imagine and build a stronger society. Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris, where he began studying the cello with his father at age four. When he was seven, he moved with his family to New York City, where he continued his cello studies before pursuing a liberal arts education. Yo-Yo has recorded more than 120 albums, is the winner of 19 Grammy Awards, and has performed for nine American presidents, most recently on the occasion of President Biden's inauguration. He has received numerous awards, including the National Medal of the Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize. Healing can come in many forms. For world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, he sees his music as a way to create touch between humans. Tirelessly performing around the world, Yo-Yo shares his musical gift generously and collaborates with many musicians, knowing that music brings healing, solace and inspiration. Music is what gives his own life meaning. In this conversation about the healing power of music, Yo-Yo Ma and the Surgeon General contemplate how music can bring meaning that sometimes words alone cannot. How does music transform our minds and our bodies? How does music connect us to ourselves, to our humanity? Speaking from their own personal experiences and stories, this deeply personal and joyous conversation sounds like two old friends catching up. (00:48) Dr. Murthy sings Happy Birthday for Yo-Yo (01:42) Intro banter that will make you smile. (05:39) How does Yo-Yo Ma see his identity? If you've ever listened to my show, you know I cannot say the words Fox and News together. They're like magnets that repel each other, the two words just do not go together. But some very creative people in NY rented some trucks with LED light-signs on the sides that say Fox KNEW... along with messages like Tucker Carlson Knew, Rupert Murdoch Knew and, well, you get the message... Those trucks are driving up and down the streets of Manhattan as the Dominion Lawsuit trial against Fox (not news) officially began this morning...I'll update you on the latest, and share some other news and issues of concern.*** ACK - less than an hour before showtime, they settled! Fox is to pay Dominion $787.5 million, and here's the kicker: none of the on-air liars have to admit they lied.So boy am I glad I had a guest booked to take the temperature down a notch or two...In the second half of the show, we'll meet one of the talented musicians whose parody songs help soothe our inner and outer savage breasts regularly on this show. Miss Laurie Lehner joins us from New Orleans, where she'll even share a new song with us.

So... I'm not the kind of person who uses the phrase, "...one of the best concerts I've ever been to...", lightly. That being said, last night's Infamous Stringdusters concert, at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, WAS literally one of the BEST concerts I have ever been to!!! There was no laser light show, no fancy stage set up, no gimicky distractions... Nope. Just a group of 5 INCREDIBLY talented guys doing what they obviously enjoy doing: PLAYING THE MUSIC THEY LOVE!! I felt their love, as did all the other attendees, which was shown through the crowds hoots, hollers and whistles of approval :) It was a performance not to be missed, and man oh man am I grateful I chose to attend ;) I do know that from this poing on I'll NOT miss any shows that are within a reasonable proximity to wherever I am! And I gently suggest you don't either ;) AND I just learned the "side guitar" is officially called a Dobro! This chick is still learnin' :) Here's to YOU becoming INFAMOUSLY STRINGDUSTED! “Sometimes it's the things that come most natural to us that we take for granted. We don't even realize what a superpower that is until we see people who don't have that ability.” - Jana Stanfield Welcome to our Special Topics episode in September, where we invite our sponsors to present unique topics that help listeners build community, boost wellness prevention, and provide educational opportunities to further their well-being. Today's Special Topics Episode Music has been a part of Jana Stanfield's entire life – ever since she was a little girl when she began learning the piano, but eventually chose guitar. In today's episode, Jana shares part of her life story that includes the moment she had a wake-up call about her career. She began as a hard news television reporter, but quickly realized the words that were getting people to tune in to the network were only inciting fear. Jana realized it was time for a change, and that going forward she wanted to use her words – combined with her musical gift – to inspire and lift people up. This launched her into a profound speaking and performance career all over the world. Listeners will even get a chance to hear her perform some of her music in today's episode, and again as one of the speakers at the Living in Vitality annual event by AdventHealth this year. Later in the show, Dr. Robin welcomes Andrea Toney, who is the Executive Director at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. Because September is Hunger Action Month, Andrea shares how the YMCA of Greater Kansas City is helping people who are hungry find their next meal. Through their mobile food drive and the development of soon-to-be food pantries at some of the Y locations, this organization is all about finding what the gaps are in our community and filling them through these hunger initiatives. Andrea shares that 1 in 8 people in the Kansas City community are hungry, and 1 in 6 kids don't even know where their next meal will come from. She goes on to explain why the Y is on a mission to strengthen this community so that kids do better in school and help alleviate the stress many families are feeling from the unprecedented times. About Today's Guests: As a motivational performer, Jana Stanfield combines music with a message that entertains, inspires, and encourages. Her mission is to give organizations a “faith lift” by delivering music, humor, and a message that makes people feel better about who they are, what they do, and why they are doing it. Jana teaches half-day life skills workshops and often delivers the motivational close at conferences and conventions, sending attendees out with a message that is empowering and uplifting. She is a multi-platinum songwriter, and many have heard her songs on the radio, television, and in movies – one even being sung by Reba McEntire. She is the founder of Refugee Film School, and the co-founder of Together We Can Change the World. She now spends her time overseas helping teen refugees. Andrea Toney is the Executive Director at the Cleaver Family YMCA in the Greater Kansas City area. She has a deep passion for serving and leading others and has been lucky enough to get to do this through the YMCA of Greater Kansas City for the last 20 years. She loves coming together with others in the Kansas City community to serve a need and to be a bright light in their lives. Andrea enjoys spending time with her family, cheering for her kids from the sidelines, and gathering with friends and family. This episode marks 50 produced episodes of Passion to Power! We are so excited- Michelle Zeitlin, Host/Producer. Herizon Music Foundation, founded by Thea Wood in 2019, aims to level the playing field for women in music- on the mic, in the studio, on the mixing board, in publishing, and in every pursuit of the wide open music industry - creators, producers, engineers, distributors, the whole gamut. This is quite a lofty goal, and Thea is committed, motivated, ready and passionate! From participating in TEDx in Texas (say that three times fast!) to running music events in Detroit, Thea Wood has played many roles. She does not consider herself a musician or vocalist, but she dabbles in writing song lyrics. She also has a sharp recollection for musical hits and artists. She loves music and she wants to empower women to expand their "Herizons." Thea shares her trajectory- not a straight line to running a non-profit- in journalism for newspapers and magazines, designing collateral materials for corporate branding and negotiating real estate. She says all these career stints prepared her for this full time endeavor that wraps around her heart. She's part marketing director, part nurturer, part coach, part bulldog, and leans into the challenge of sales- "you have to be able to ASK for money." HOW DOES MUSIC GET UNDER HER SKIN? Did you know music actually trains the brain to work better? Sharper! WHAT are the (disappointing) FACTS about women in music and the inequities in job hiring opportunities, music air play, label opportunities, distribution and support? GENDER vs. GENRE- a big take away! "MUSIC HEALS," says Thea, and answers these questions. She wants to build a foundation where women of all ages can engage with mentors, get resources, and feel they have a safe haven. Thea is also pretty hip! A mother of two, she has shiny eyes and an easy laugh- Michelle and Thea laughed...a lot. ✨This is about the healing and humanizing powers of classical music. I spoke with Dustin Seo, a classically trained cellist and Artistic Director of Street Symphony, a Los Angeles based non-profit that brings classical music to homeless communities to build connection and human dignity. ❤️ Street Symphony was founded in 2011 by Vijay Gupta, A highly accomplished and renowned violinist with The Los Angeles Philharmonic. Gupta believed the act of making and performing music was a deeply spiritual practice - one that had the power to heal audiences and musicians alike. In 2007, Gupta was one of the youngest violinists to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic, but his path in music took an unexpected turn when he met Nathaniel Ayers — a Juilliard School-trained double bassist whose crippling schizophrenia ended his professional career and left him homeless. Gupta said the following about Ayers: “[Nathaniel] had a more encyclopedic knowledge of music than my professors at Yale. This was his oxygen, this was his survival. A lot of people on Skid Row turned to self-medicating with drugs, but Nathaniel turned to music.” After building a relationship and musical exchange with Ayers, Gupta wanted to do more and bring classical music down from the elite stage of the Disney Hall, to Skid Row, one of the largest and most disenfranchised homeless communities in America. So he founded Street Symphony, to bridge this gap. ✨ Dustin spoke to me about the work of Street Symphony, and he also happened to played cello for me, which was a treat! He has a totally different perspective on the power and mission of classical music outside the concert halls and his stories of healing and solace from the hard hit Skid Row community were absolutely heart-rending. We talked about :Music as an equalizing space for human connection, a purveyor of dignity and strength. What music can do when it seems that nothing can help. The role of music in bridging the gap between homeless communities and the rest of the worldThe contrast between the gilded image of classical music and its potential as a measure for social justice.
