Celebrate Women's History Month as we look back at Hazel Johnson's Women in Jazz festival. The festival ran from 1986 to 1991 at the Madam Walker Theatre and featured many important women from the Indianapolis jazz scene, including Flo Garvin, Aretta La Marre, Mary Moss, Cherryl Hayes, Vickie Daniels, Anita Walker, Brenda Walls, Margaret Floyd, Cyann Proffitt, Salathiel Latrell, and others. Listen to music from artists who performed at the festival, including never-before-heard live recordings of Hazel Johnson. Johnson started the Women in Jazz festival, to provide young and veteran women an opportunity to perform together. In a 1987 article published by the Indianapolis Star, Johnson said, “For many years men have dominated the jazz field. We feel the time is right for women to step out and receive the recognition we've been told we deserve.” The first Women in Jazz festival was held on October 12, 1986 and was hosted by the legendary Indianapolis broadcaster Barbara Boyd. Johnson was born in Indianapolis in 1944. She grew up in the Avenue neighborhood and attended Crispus Attucks High School. Johnson began singing as a child. By age 14, she was performing professionally with the Naptown bandleader Larry Liggett. During her long career, Johnson played at many Avenue venues and she performed with many significant Indianapolis musicians, including Pookie Johnson, Jimmy Coe, Mel Rhyne, Thurston Harris, Carl Bailey, Johnny Dial, Errol Grandy and many more.  During her final years, Johnson spent much of her time managing the Inner-City Music School, a program she co-founded in 1994 with her husband Mack Strong. The school provided free music education for Indianapolis youth. Johnson's contributions to jazz music were honored in 2007, when she was inducted into the Indianapolis Jazz Hall of Fame. Hazel Johnson died in 2011. She was 67 years old.

UK Jazz artist/producer/journalist Fiona Ross chats about her new album, women in jazz, and the London Jazz Fest! All on Episode 19, Season 3. Fiona Ross is one of those people that I keep coming back to. Fiona is very inspirational and very much a role model of what is truly the meaning of success as a creative artist. I spoke with her from her London home the night after her 5th new album launch gig. I could see from all the build-up to the event, and the buzz all over social media that this new (5th) album titled: "Red Flags and High Heels" was a resounding success even after just 24 hours!  Fiona explained her motivation for this 5th album concept, and how it was clearly a progressive linear timeline as is weaved throughout all her albums to date. We also talked about her founding "Women In Jazz Media" It's simply birth to continued exponential growth, now with 16 team members and a UK parliamentary award for Jazz Media Excellence, and the promoting of equal rights for women in the UK jazz industry.  I highly recommend you check out the consummate musicianship of Fiona and the other musicians on this wonderful album. The production is super professional quality for an album that is totally self-funded. Look out for more coming with Fiona and me as I head over to the London Jazz Festival - reporting live for Music Matters Podcast and playing my bass guitar as a guest at one of Fiona's London Jazz Festival gigs. From Lillian Hardin and Ella Fitzgerald to Terri Lyne Carrington and Esperanza Spalding, in jazz music women have help to shape, innovate, and serve as agents of change. But the disparity in opportunities for women speaks to the oppressive nature of institutional inequities that not only exist in the jazz industry, but in the world. Uncovering how these inequities manifest—from discriminatory hiring practices to unequal pay—is just the first step towards advocacy; however, advocating for gender equity requires an intersectional approach to looking at how both sexism and racism impact opportunities for all women. In a moderated, open-mic conversation about the challenges and successes of women across the jazz diaspora—from musicians and educators to students and industry professionals—this town hall forum create a dialogue on how to both empower and advocate for women and address the question: “What do we need in order to create equitable spaces for women in the jazz industry?” Moderator: Kaisha S. Johnson (Women of Color in the Arts).

Are women in the UK jazz scene facing discrimination and sexual harassment? Sarah Raine, an academic and anthropologist, carried out research of ten interviews with anonymised female jazz musicians of a “notable level of success” who performed at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival event in 2019. Emma discusses the issues with Sarah, who is an academic at Edinburgh Napier University and researcher into gender equality in the music industry and with Jas Kayser, who is a jazz drummer and musician. In her last book, Don't Hold My Head Down, Lucy-Anne Holmes, writer and founder of the 'No More Page 3' campaign, described her “sexual odyssey” and compiled a list of things that would improve her sex life. She has now gone a step further and collected the testimonies of 51 women around the world, revealing their innermost thoughts and feelings during sex. There are women of all ages and sexualities. Lucy-Anne joins Emma to talk about the very varied experiences of female sexuality. Just days after Japan's Olympics chief was forced to resign over sexist comments, a prominent politician has announced that women will be invited to its all-male meetings - as long as they don't speak. What does this say about equality in Japan? BBC correspondent Mariko Oi joins Emma to discuss. Fourteen years on Dehenna, who is now Conservative MP for Bishop Auckland, has launched an all-party parliamentary group to investigate the impact of one punch assaults and to try and improve the lives of victims and their families. From 30 October to 8 November, the International Women's Jazz Festival will take place in Sydney. One of the musicians performing there - Maryanne Piper - speaks German, as she has spent many years in Europe, some of them in Germany. Of course, during her 2 decades of travelling she has also constantly made music, with all kinds of greats, from all kinds of cultures. She mainly plays clarinet, because that way you can always have your instrument with you, she says - but also other wind instruments, like saxophone - and she also composes. Maryanne is not genre-specific in her music, which includes pop, classical and ethnic music in addition to jazz, nor in her art form. She improvised with the Pina Bausch Theatre, played in film orchestras, organises musical literature readings, conducts workshops and of course tours with her project Lilith Nights, in which she collaborates with musicians from all over the world. We can hear four of them on 7 November at Foundry 616 in Sydney as part of the Women's Music Festival. Last year's Lilith Nights concert was recorded by ABC Classic FM and this programme gave us permission to play some of the pieces in this programme - in the podcast only small excerpts of them. - Vom 30. Jacqui Sutton hails from Houston, Texas.  She draws on over 20 years of musical and stage experience to leave her personal stamp on her favorite songs. She got her start as a singer as a member of a vocal jazz ensemble called Jazzmouth, founded by Bay Area vocalist and composer Molly Holm in the early 1980s. At the time, heavyweights like Bobby McFerrin and Tuck & Patti were ascendant, and these, among many other Bay Area musicians, were her influences as she sought to master the jazz idiom. When she moved to Portland, Oregon 4 years later, she was exposed to bluegrass music while learning how to contra dance. The sound of the banjo, mandolin, and fiddle would continually intermingle with jazz in her ears, and over the ensuing 20 years, this melding coalesced into the Frontier Jazz sound. Frontier Jazz is a sound that Jacqui believes could have only been created in Texas. It’s not what she expected when she and her husband moved from New York (by way of Madison, Wisconsin) back in 2008, but much to her surprise and joy, the Houston-based musicians who make up the Frontier Jazz Orchestra turned out to be the perfect bandmates to help her interweave the predominantly jazz/bluegrass sound with the musical influences that she has been attracted to most of her life. www.jacquisutton.com www.wijsf.com
