Today's guest is psychotherapist Dr Kristen Zaleski. Dr Zaleski speaks about surviving trauma and the impact trauma has on its victims. She breaks down the different levels of trauma and explains that trauma consists of moments that happen during a high-stress state. Dr. Zaleski discusses how trauma is different for each individual and describes the signs parents should look for in their own children. Tune in today to learn more about how trauma affects individuals and the support people need to work through the trauma they have experienced. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:55] Dr. Kristen Zaleski's background. [1:52] Is there such a thing as generational trauma, and how does someone break the cycle? [4:00] How do professionals find a way to provide help but still manage their own lives? [6:41] Are there differing capacities to the way people handle trauma? [8:58] We have exposure on a daily basis through social media, the news, etc. Are there different levels of trauma? [13:18] What should parents look for if their children have experienced trauma? [18:06] How Dr. Kristen Zaleki sees the connection between those who have experienced trauma and those who are affluent. [22:38] What do we think about the long term impact of those who were sexually assulted by those in power? KEY TAKEAWAYS: The capacity to handle trauma depends on how you were raised as a child and how your self-care and survival strategies are when it comes to stress. Stress is an important and necessary part of life. The important thing is being able to find a way to regulate the stress and find a way back to homeostasis. It's important for parents and caregivers to allow their children to experience stress, but also educate them on healthy ways to cope. There is a lot of blame and discounting of trauma with victims. People need support to shift the narrative from it being their fault to it being a situation that happened. They need help to work through the feelings of stress that come along with trauma. BIO: Kristen Zaleski, Ph.D., LCSW is the Clinical Director of the Mental Health Collective, founding director of the USC SDP-Keck Human Rights Clinic, and a past Associate Professor at USC in the School of Social work for the past decade. She is also a psychotherapist in private practice in Hermosa Beach, California. Kristen's research and clinical focus spans two decades with trauma survivors and survivors of human rights abuse. Dr. Zaleski's first book, Understanding and Treating Military Sexual Trauma, is currently in its 2nd edition and is the first social work text on the topic. In November 2019, Oxford University Press published her second book, Women's Journey to Empowerment in the 21st Century, on the topic of transnational feminism and global violence. Dr. Zaleski is an Advisory Board Member to Meta (previously Facebook) on the Global Safety Task Force team and is a trainer at the Department of Defense on sexual violence treatment and theory. Even more disturbing than the slap and the profanities hurled at Chris Rock by Will Smith in front of the entire world is the fact that so many people are framing the debacle within the context of #protectblackwomen. Let's be clear, what Will did was a criminal act, not an act of protection. If you really want to know how you can protect black women, start with the 5 suggestions I lay out in this episode. For Men's Health Awareness Month (November), we are partnering with Healthline.com on a special content series, "No More Silence", a 4-episode video series exploring different aspects of men's health, why men avoid speaking up for their physical and mental well-being, and how we can create a world where more men are empowered to seek treatment. Enjoy the audio of all four episodes here in one single listen and visit http://healthline.com/nomoresilence to watch the video versions. With special guest Yolo Akili Robinson, award-winning writer, healing justice worker, founder, and executive director of BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective), we invite you to join us in looking at men's relationship to health. The panel provides personal insight to help break the silence and stigmas around seeking professional care. They discuss how we can all do better at creating spaces for men, boys, and masculine folks to have compassion for themselves, practice vulnerability, and take actions toward a healthier tomorrow. As a teen, Leah Juliett sent nude photos to a boy who spent years requesting them. When the boy learned that Leah was gay and paying attention to other people, Leah became one of the millions of victims of revenge porn — more accurately known as nonconsensual pornography (NCP). In this episode, Hazami Barmada explores where NCP is criminalized, the lack of regulation that prevents victims from getting justice, and what (little) recourse victims have in getting their life and dignity back. Featuring policy and advocacy insights from: Leah Juliett, Founder and Executive Director of March Against Revenge Porn; Elisa D'Amico, Chief Legal Officer of A4D and Co-Founder of Cyber Civil Rights Legal Project; and Dr. Kristen Zaleski, Clinical Director at the Mental Health Collective and Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern California. -- Finding Humanity is a production of Humanity Lab Foundation and Hueman Group Media. Are mental health and planetary health different sides of the same coin? How do we bridge between individual action and systemic change? And what is at the root of anxiety? Big questions that we are deep diving into with Christabel Reed, Co-Founder of the systems change platform Advaya, and of the education-for-action platform EcoResolution with Cara Delevingne. In this episode, we discuss the crises of mental health, collective health and environmental health, regeneration in all aspects of the word, collective listening and imagination. I am so excited about this conversation with the incredible organizer, writer, and healer, Yolo Akili Robinson. We had a great talk about everything from being an uncle, the healing journey, future books, the authentic self, to the intersection of male privilege, the patriarchy, race, and queerness. I particularly enjoyed how Yolo described his own healing journey and how he created what he needed and then shared it with the world through BEAM, as well as our discussion on what being gender non-conforming means to each of us. We ended with a fruitful talk about the scarcity mentality, and Yolo sharing what he is in the middle of reading! You can also check out Yolo's first book, Dear Universe wherever books are sold and read his essay in the new anthology, You Are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame Resilience, and the Black Experience, edited by Tarana Burke and Brené Brown. Guests Bio: Yolo Akili Robinson is an award winning writer, healing justice worker, yogi and the founder and executive director of BEAM (The Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective). BEAM is a national training, movement building and grant making organization dedicated to the healing, wellness and liberation of Black communities. Yolo has worked primarily in three areas: Batterers intervention/family counseling with Black men and boys, HIV/AIDS, and healing justice/wellness work. In 2018, Yolo was awarded the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation "Health Equity Award" for his work. He was also featured at the 2020 BET Awards for an "Empowerful spotlight", highlighting his work facilitating the vision of BEAM. His writings and work have appeared on Shondaland, GQ, Women's Health, USA Today, Vice, B.E.T, Huffington Post, Cassius, Ebony, Everyday Feminisms and much more. He is the author of the social justice themed affirmation Book "Dear Universe: Letters of Affirmation & Empowerment for all of us" and a contributor to Tarana Burke and Dr. Brene Brown's anthology "You Are Your Best Thing." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week we connected with Yolo Akili, the founder of BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective). As May is Mental Health Awareness Month we talked to Yolo about all things mental health, but it didn't stop there. We dug into the radical framework, Social Justice Informed Mental Health Literacy, BEAM uses in their work and why this framework is important to the work they do in our communities. We also talk about Yolo, his story, and how he tries to live in alignment. Press play, tune in, and take out your notepad for this one. You don't wanna miss the gems Yolo was dropping. Lastly, big thanks to Demarco for sharing with us how he divests from patriarchy. Join the LTB Book Club as we discuss My Grandmother's Hands on 5/19: http://bit.ly/LTBBookClub This year our theme is, "Divesting from Patriarchy" so here's how you can get involved and have your opinion heard on the show: 1. Send your message to letstalkbruh@gmail.com OR call 708-320-3126 to leave a voicemail OR send us a voice text via Instagram DM 3. Tune in to hear your clip on the show. Let's Talk Bruh is hiring! Only a day after the horrific shootings in greater Atlanta, we begin our series on anti-Asian racism. When a gunman violently assaulted and killed eight humans, six of whom were Asian women, in a matter of an hour, wounding countless others, we must look critically at the interlocking realities of sexism, misogyny, harmful sexual stereotypes, and supremacy cultures. These realities continue to accelerate manifold harm against communities of color resulting in not only material consequences but also the devastating loss of jobs, housing, livelihoods, the literal lives of our loved ones, and the spaces and places that should be safe for each of us. Alex Wong is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated artist/producer who makes music to help people remember who they are and show themselves to the world. He has produced records with Delta Rae (Big Machine), Ari Hest (Columbia), Vienna Teng (Universal), and Morgxn (Hollywood), among others. His music has been featured in movies The Last Song and The Lincoln Lawyer, TV shows True Blood, Ray Donovan, and One Tree Hill, and commercials for Google and Aquafina. Alex has performed at festivals like Coachella and Outside Lands, and NPR’s Mountain Stage. He was a songwriting finalist in the NewSong competition and Kerrville Newfolk competition. In 2020 he released an EP Kivalina inspired by stories of climate change, and his second solo album The Elephant and the Seahorse on Tone Tree records. In 2021 Alex created The Quiet Voice Fund around the belief that our voice does not need to be loud to be strong. The fund supports organizations working to redefine power in our culture toward authenticity, empathy and actualization and away from aggression, selfishness and domination. What is a feminist relational approach to therapy? How does CWHC's team of staff counselors, volunteers, and interns keep our model of care at the heart of the Counseling program? And what does it look like to work towards de-medicalizing mental health?Since its start in 1989, CWHC's Counseling program has recognized the impact that systems of oppression have on an individual. This recognition has set the program apart and continues to shape how our counselors approach their work.Join us today for a conversation between Tina Lee, Lee Jacobs Riggs, and Sunny Swift as they reflect on what it's like to be a Counselor - and be a human - practicing CWHC's approach to care. SassyBlack - "Therapy" from the 2020 self-released EP Stuck. Throughout her career, Seattle's own SassyBlack has tackled the topic of mental health, from her 2019 song “Depression” and the accompanying short film released early in 2020. On her latest EP Stuck, and today's featured track, in particular, she continues the conversation around self care, encouraging listeners to reach out when they're feeling "nothing at all," repeating the lyric "lay it on me" in a soothing rhythm. In conjunction with KEXP’s Music Heals: Mental Health, we’re asking Song of the Day artists to spotlight a different organization, and in a perfect complement to today's Song of the Day, SassyBlack chose the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective, a "collective of advocates, yoga teachers, artists, therapists, lawyers, religious leaders, teachers, psychologists and activists committed to the emotional/mental health and healing of Black communities." For the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S we take a little break with the collection of intros from episodes 716-720, with an extra intro to tuck you in. (also not extra intro is tucked in due to the fact the project files and release files were different. So this collection includes the intros for 714 - Ice Cream Barons | Stan Chronicles 11 because the project file is listed as episode 716 as well as the 719 - The Greatest Greeter, which has an unnumbered project file. Oh what fun it is to take a trip to the project past! In this episode, I'm joined by Dr Anna Frank and Dr Christoph Freysoldt. In contrast to our usual emphasis on scientific research, we discussed the very important issue of role of mental health and job-related stress, and took the opportunity to discuss many of the challenges and issues that researchers may come across at different periods of their careers. For employees of the Max Planck Society, the following links may be of help to those suffering from stress and/or mental health issues:The Mental Health Collective of the MPG:https://twitter.com/mpg_mhcPhD Net page for mental health awareness activities:https://www.phdnet.mpg.de/events-and-activities/mental-health

Moments of startling clarity can come at unexpected times. Like last weekend when I was standing on the porch of a home that wasn’t mine and someone asked me where I was going. I quite obviously took the question figuratively and realized with a jolt that I have absolutely no idea where I am going at any given time. This week we talk to Miranda Whitney, who experienced a critical moment of clarity standing in the doorway of her mother’s bedroom. In a stroke of lucidity, Miranda commenced her recovery journey from an all-consuming alcohol addiction. We follow Miranda’s path from middle school in Denver through college in Oxford, Ohio. We discuss anxiety, depression, addiction, and strategies for living amongst it all. Prepare to be delighted, captivated, and then brought to tears. You have the right to remain silent. But you also have the right to say whatever the fuck you want. And that’s what Miranda did.Content Warning: This episode contains themes and explicit descriptions of addiction, alcoholism, and mental illnessFind Miranda Whitney's writing here: https://ogmirr.wixsite.com/unsolicitedopinionThis week Doing It Wrong is donating to Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective whose mission is to facilitate emotional healthcare and healing for Black communities through education, advocacy, and the creative arts. In this episode of the Offspring Podcast, Srinath and Niko talk with Barbara Šafarić and Julian D. Rolfes (JD) from Mental Health Collective of the Max Planck Society (MPS). They are a grass roots movement to bring awareness to mental health issues within the MPS and try to help dealing with them. Especially, with the frightening results from the PhDnet survey, the issue of mental health is becoming more important than ever. In our discussion, we try to figure out how to deal with mental health on a personal level but also if people around you are affected. Furthermore, we hope to bring awareness to the different institutions that can help you on a professional level. If you or someone you know might be affected by mental health issues, it is nothing to be ashamed of but rather something that needs to be addressed properly. The Collective started out in 2019 and organized a Max-Planck-wide Mental Health Awareness Week. This year's campaign for Mental Health Awareness will take place from October 5th to October 9th, 2020. A genuine and vulnerable insight into the sporting journey of Ian Braid – dedicated to Nina Foord who sadly passed away recently. Nina typified the amazing work that volunteers do in sport and also impacted on Ian's journey from being a young boy volunteering at the local rugby club right the way through to championing the cause and providing support for both athletes and those that help the athletes. Ian shares some of the highs and lows of his career including some personal challenges but what is clear is the impact he has had on the sporting system and many individuals by bringing attention to some hugely important issues. Below is a little more detail about Ian. I am confident that he will make you think and that there are some great take away messages from the podcast. Enjoy! Ian has brought together his significant experience in sport and his passion for helping others under the umbrella of DOCIAsport the company he founded in 2017. He brings a refreshing and independent view to all aspects of duty of care in sport from the perspective of coaches, officials, athletes, administrators, and the sector itself. Ian is acknowledged as a trusted leader whose opinions are widely sought after in sport, higher education, government, and business. He is recognised as a champion of mental health education. DOCIAsport has been shortlisted for a national award as Mental Health Consultancy 2020 and Ian himself is a fellow of the Mental Health Collective. Ian has given acclaimed keynote presentations, lectures, podcasts, and workshops throughout the UK. His vision as CEO of the British Athletes Commission led to the sector strengthening the support offered to vulnerable adults in sport. He also played a key role in the DCMS review of duty of care in sport assisting Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. These became the platform for Ian to deliver sustainable positive change in sport, mental health provision and for the next generation of sport leaders applying his values, skills, and experience If you enjoy the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes.
