Sean Winter is burdened by a heartrending past he can't share. As a result, Sean doesn't believe there are any good Christian examples in the world. Any faith he had has been eroded. He depends on facts, reason, and experience alone. At twenty-four-years-old, he has a bachelor's degree and works at one of the top customer service firms in Oklahoma City. A new job and post-college life bring new opportunities for friendship and even love. What happens when one of those new acquaintances turns out to be a Christian? And is Sean ready for any kind of romantic relationship? He continues to be haunted by his traumas, depression, past choices, and his own naiveté. They all threaten to tear him apart, however hard he fights against them. Sean wants to build a future for himself. But he risks being consumed by the former things that torment him. Can two Christians, one from Sean's past and one he's just met, make a difference in the life of an atheist? Listen in as I chat with my returning guest co-host and contributor, Allen Steadham, as we chat about his newest release, on Tuesday, August 16th at 7 pm Eastern time. On today's show, we look back at the series as a whole, recap the latest two High Stakes Poker episodes, and dive deep into the mayhem that took place after Phil Hellmuth decided that queen-four offsuit was a good hand to play! Sean Winter joins the co- host chair for Pentecost 15 where we focus on the nature of wisdom literature in Proverbs (Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23) and the way this tradition is developed christologically by the writer of James (James 2:1-10 (11-13), 14-17). Both readings deal with partiality and favouritism; cautioning the faithful against favouring those who are rich and powerful, at the same time coercing the poor to believe they deserve their lowly status. Jesus' encounter with the Syrophoenician woman in Mark (Mark 7:24-37) is also about breaking down boundaries, this time between Jew and Gentile. We touch on the way this reading, in particular, challenges colonial understandings of mission.
On the latest special episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Sarah Herring, Jeff Platt, and Chad Holloway break down the recently-revealed 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) schedule. They touch on some of the biggest changes and additions, highlight premier events, and get excited about Doyle Brunson saying he might play select tournaments. They then recap the US Poker Open, which was won by David Peters for the second year in a row, complete with sideline interviews with Peters and Jordan Cristos. Jeff also breakdowns his bizarre "Sports Cards" interview with Jared Bleznick. Other stories covered are Chance Kornuth winning the MSPT Venetian, Armando Mesina taking down the RGPS Jamul Casino, and the special one-year anniversary edition of the GGPoker Super Million$. Toss in a pair of "juicy drama" stories in WPT champ Dennis Blieden getting sentenced for his embezzlement crimes and a provocative ACR live-stream causing controversy, and it's an episode not to be missed. Finally, they welcome guest Tony Miles, who finished runner-up in the 2018 WSOP. Miles is in a well-publicized prop bet with Shaun Deeb where he's bet $5,000 at 20:1 that he can complete a course on American Ninja Warrior. Sean Winter joins us this week to continue our focus on 1 Peter, specifically 1 Peter 1:17-23 set for Easter 3. We talk about the nature of holiness as Peter conceives it; the way holiness refers not to individual moral perfection, but to a community’s identity as a consequence of what God has done for us. We discuss exile, and the particular way it is used in 1 Peter, as distinct from Isaiah. In these trying times of isolation, 1 Peter draws us back to see that the Scripture points to that which is enduring: the love of Christ, and the love we are called to give to one another.
To celebrate 50 episodes of the Love Rinse Repeat podcast, Liam interviewed seven guests about Jesus' seven last words from the cross. Here, Sean Winter reflects on the words "I thirst", and both their simplicity, as a basic human need for a small mercy in the midst of trauma, and their powerful symbolic and theological overtones. We explore what the words teach us about presence, absence, and the completion of Christ's work. And how Jesus' own thirst shapes how we read the many other times thirst is employed in the Gospel of John. Sean Winter joins Fran and Robyn to discuss the shoot that springs from the “stump of Jesse” passage in Isaiah 11:1-10. Isaiah here offers a vision of a promised, righteous king from the Davidic line; a passage that would be later be applied to Jesus. We discuss the use of Isaiah's arboreal images as picked up in Matthew 3:1-12. In this podcast we refer to Robert Alter's 2018 translation of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).
