In today's episode of the Ready to Run podcast we'll meet with professional long distance runner, Bria Wetsch. Bria lives in Colorado and has been passionate about competitive running since she was 11 years old. Following a successful high school career, Bria went on to compete at a collegiate level at the University of Oregon. After college, she began her career as a pro runner in Mammoth Lakes, CA where she met her - now husband and coach - Aaron Lange. We'll discuss her journey from Haglund's surgery in 2017 to Olympic trials qualifying time just 13 months later. Bria ultimately finished 27th at the 2020 Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta. More recently, Bria ran a marathon PR of 2:28:35 to finish in 4th place at the California International Marathon earlier this month. We'll recap her incredible performance as well as some of the mental health challenges she overcame during her build up. For Bria, CIM was about more than a marathon PR. She shares a very open conversation on her struggles with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks at the beginning of her marathon training cycle. She also discusses how the trajectory to finding groundedness was not linear. We hope this episode encourages everyone in the running community to better understand the influence of mental health in sports so that we can support those in need and help others achieve their goals. Let's get ready to run with professional long distance runner Bria Wetsch! What we talked about:  4:15- Introduction to Bria 5:25- How Bria is feeling coming off of her race at CIM 9:50- Her racing mentality 14:15- Her mentality during her race at CIM 15:10- Her buildup to CIM 20:25- Her Achilles injury she sustained post-college and her Haglund's surgery 26:10- Bria's husband and coach, Aaron 28:55- Return to running post Haglund's surgery 29:45- Moving to Boulder 31:05- What has kept her in the sport through all of the injuries 38:05- What she is looking forward to in the coming years 41:20- Her battle with her mental health this summer and how she treated that Show notes: Bria on Instagram Sponsors: Green Growers Farm Elderberry Syrup Use the code “Sandyboy” for free shipping Previnex Use the code "ReadytoRun" for 15% off your first order

This week I had the pleasure to speak with Lindsey Herman again. Last we spoke, episode 89, I got to know her and her story. If you haven't listened, you should. This time we focused on the last year and her amazing finish at Leadville. Lindsey talks about some of the races she did in the last year and how much fun she's been having. We also talked about being able to be a pacer and how that experience helped her with this race. It was fun to hear about a couple of the amazing women that she teamed up with to pace and help her through Leadville. We talk about her coaching and how she has used what she knows to help others grow into the sport of running as well. She also talks about knowing how far her experiences can go in directing people, but also when they should be talking to a professional in another space, such as nutrition. Lindsey is such a fun person to talk to and I'm excited to continue to watch her grow as a person and an athlete. I am so happy to have been able to catch up with her again and I hope you enjoy our conversation. This heat does not want to go anywhere, but at least the mornings are cooler. It's a good thing to get out in that cooler air, if you can. So hydrate, enjoy that fresh green chile, and keep running, New Mexico.

Annie Frisbie had a dream day at the NYC Marathon. She finished as the 3rd American and 7th overall in her debut marathon, running two half marathon PRs en route to the finish line in Central Park. Her finishing time gave her the 4th fastest marathon debut ever by an American.  As an unsponsored athlete, she ran in a mix of apparel and footwear from different brands, all while taking vacation from her day job as a graphic designer for a healthcare start-up. Though unsponsored, she is not unsupported as she runs with Minnesota Distance Elite in Minneapolis.  At 24, Annie Frisbie seems to just be getting started as an elite-level runner. She won a state title in cross country in high school, is an NCAA All-American, and is now getting the opportunity to show her potential and passion for road racing. In this episode, we cover her childhood growing up in River Falls, Wisconsin where her entrepreneurial parents showed her the importance of hard work. We discuss her patient progression in the sport from high school to Iowa State to joining Minnesota Distance Elite. We discuss her love for and early success on the roads and why she chose to move up to the marathon so soon.  Then of course, we get the play-by-play on her amazing marathon debut in NYC including how she celebrated afterward. Finally, we talk about her perspective on clean sport including the fact that she's never been tested out of competition as a pro.  Annie's perspective on our sport is pure and refreshing, and we can't wait to see where it takes her next!

“I really want to represent the country, and I want to make that the focus of my entire year.” Last month, Emma Bates was among the thousands of runners who ran the Chicago Marathon on a very hot, very humid day. But the weather didn't bring her down: Emma finished second that day, earning herself a spot on the podium and a new personal best time in the marathon (2:24:20). On this episode, the professional runner for Asics reflects on that day in Chicago, and shares the lessons she learned when the running got tough. She talks about her emotional 2020, including missing a spot on Team USA at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, and then traveling to Europe afterward and getting a bad case of Covid-19 (which she hates talking about). Then, she talks about returning to the roads for the Marathon Project, and about her decision to join Team Boss and to be coached by Joe Bosshard. Plus, all about her weekend spectating at the TCS New York City Marathon (where she was best friend Laura Thweatt's "person"), and her excitement about earning a spot on next year's world championship team in the marathon. My guest this week, Hannes Gehring's mountain fitness is something I really aspire to. He's been on the show before, he was on episode 40 and it was right after he completed Nolan's 14. Shortly after that, he was battling injuries and not doing much running. It's been fun watching him overcome his obstacles and come back to earn a 7th place finish at Leadville this year. Pay attention to this guy, he's a special person and I don't think this is the last we'll here of him. In this fourth and final Unbound recap episode, Payson talks to Jonathan Levin, the last rider to cross the finish line. Jonathan decided to race Unbound with a few friends on a whim, having trained less than intended and with less knowledge of the course than they thought. In spite of never having ridden more than a hundred miles beforehand, they all reached the finish (with less than 10 minutes to spare) before the 3am cutoff. In this conversation, Jonathan talks about why he decided to take on such a big challenge without much prior experience, the aspect of the race that they got right, and why he might be aiming for the 350 mile Unbound XL race next. He talks about some of the more memorable moments from those 200 miles, including hallucinations, a quick creek swim, and a narrowly avoided crash at the finish. And they're joined by Jonathan's friend, Chris, who crewed for Jonathan and his friends and got more than he bargained for. Jonathan also talks about his professional life, where he runs a global company that develops investigation and compliance software for cryptocurrencies, and was listed on the Fortune Magazine's "40 Under 40" list.

Interview Introduction: Matt Bach began his endurance journey starting with doing his first triathlon with his wife in 2010 starting a 5 year journey to qualify for Kona in 2015. In that five years, he learned a ton of lesson about nutrition and how to fuel for an iron-distance effort.   Shout Out to UCAN: I'd like to throw out a complimentary plug for Generation UCAN. As I mentioned with Matt, I discovered UCAN in the preparation for my last Ironman. I'm using UCAN now and really loving it. I mix a bottle of UCAN the night before my morning workouts and then drink the bottle on the way to the pool or when warming up on the trainer. After that, I have the hydration formula for the remainder of the workout that has no fuel but has sodium. Both products taste great and I'm really like the blender bottle. Let’s make cycling safer for everyone!! From   Endurance News: Nick Butter 30, has become the first person to complete a marathon in all 196 countries recognized by the United Nations, finishing his challenge in Greece on Sunday. Butter has so far raised over £65,000 ($83,000) for charity Prostate Cancer UK as a result of his record-breaking odyssey, which began on January 6, 2018. Butter, a former banker who hails from Dorset in the south of England, ran his first marathon at the age of 11. Later, he competed at a high level while keeping up an office job, but eventually decided to become a full-time runner. The idea for his 196-country challenge came when Butter met a man at a race in the Sahara desert who had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Kevin Webber imparted a powerful message that inspired Butter to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and, when he realized that nobody had ever run a marathon in every country in the world, he set off to become the first person to do so. "You've got to value your time, you cannot just assume that you're going to get to retirement and live this life, you've got to go and do what you want now," Butter told CNN.   This week we interviewed Ryan Ulrich. He made it to the finale and ended up in third place in Survivor Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. Ryan had a strong start, becoming an early front runner to win. He faded into the background after the merge and appeared to take a backseat to the other players that pushed the limits of the game.
