EP314: From the welcoming arms of Durban, South Africa, we were thrilled to sit down with the first lady of Durban Hip-Hop, Lex LaFoy. We kicked off the session reflecting on Lex's intriguing childhood, growing up with a pastor grandfather and a mother with a deep love for Hip-Hop. Her early exposure to this contrasting mix of influences laid the groundwork for her unique artistic persona. As she recounts dancing and rapping to Lauryn Hill and Jay-Z, you can't help but admire her journey from an eager spectator to a transformative creator in the world of hip-hop.There's no denying the monumental role Hip-Hop has played in shaping cultural narratives globally. Lex gave us an insider's perspective, drawing from her experiences in Durban's local Hip-Hop scene. Monthly Hip-Hop sessions and her time with the rap crew, Red Hillers, were instrumental in honing her understanding of the cultural backbone of the genre. Each anecdote from this phase echoed Lex's deep-rooted passion for music and the sense of belonging she found in the Hip-Hop community. It wouldn't be a complete conversation without an exploration of Lex's personal music trajectory. From her initial steps in 2012 to the release of Lexicon 2.0, Lex candidly discussed the peaks and valleys of her music career. The transition from her old persona, Lexicon, to the new, commercially appealing, Lex LaFoy is a testament to her resilience and dedication. She also expresses her gratitude for her family, her community in Durban, and the support she's received along her journey. You can't miss this insightful and inspiring conversation with Lex LaFoy which serves as a true testament to the power of music and resilience.Support the showWebsitehttps://www.sludgeunderground.comMerchhttps://www.sludgeunderground.com/storeInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/sludgeundergroundTikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@sludgeundergroundYouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxyLW9b_W81ETvby7J4wmwATwitterhttps://twitter.com/Sludge031Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/SludgeUnderground

We discuss the history of South African Hip-Hop to current taaarms.
In part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Sipho Sithole, he discusses the regional differences in South African hip hop. He talks about the hip hop scenes in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg. He also discusses the linguistic differences in South African hip hop and the role ethnic identity plays in the styles and languages artists utilize. He also looks at the evolution of pop music in South Africa, from kwaito, to gqom, to amapiano. Sipho also discusses the dynamics within Coloured communities in South Africa, and the relationships between Black and Coloured South Africans. He provides history of the origins of Coloured South Africans among the Khoi & San (first nation) communities, and their forming close-knit communities. The hip hop that came out of those communities, largely based in Cape Town, addressed the social ills happening in the Coloured townships. In looking at the divisions between Black and Coloured South Africans, we compare it to the relationships between African Americans and African immigrants in the U.S. There are not many discussions around Black & Coloured relations in South African hip hop, so it was important to get a perspective on the history of those relationships. Intro song: “Yesterday” with Zakwe, Zuluboy, & Zola Dr. Sipho Sithole (@DrSiphoSithole) is a Research Fellow at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (University of Johannesburg) and holds a PhD in Anthropology, a B.Sc in Political Science and International Relations, and an M. Sc in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management. Dr. Sithole's research revolves around language identity, culture, migration, and integration. Sithole has a long career in hip hop & is the founder and owner of an important and multi-award-winning music production house, Native Rhythms Productions, & Native Rhythms Records.Continue reading
On this episode of the #TheDojo we are joined by the very talented young OG in the South African Hip Hop scene, Maggz. We start things off with shooting the shits with MA double and get his opinion on Shimza's utterances that hip hop in SA is dead. We discuss some hip hop artists jumping on the Amapiano genre and appearing to just be riding on the band wagon. We lament government's support of artists and the favouritism that is apparent with regards to whose initiatives get funded and supported by government. We ponder the pitting of artist against each other in relation to the comparison of Kamo Mphela and Babes Wodumo's careers. We touch briefly on Aka's career and how he's been able to keep himself relevant in light of his recent release with Costa Titch. We ask Maggz if he would take the dinner with Jay Z or 500k. Maggz recounts the end of Glitz Gang and what led to the relationship breakdown between himself and Bongani Fassie. We speak on the business of hip hop and having the right team. We round out the Pod by delving into Maggz's career and giving him his flowers. *Recorded, mixed and mastered by Oros42

It’s soooooo good to be back!! I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with South African Hip Hop artist Blaque Nubon and asked him to share how he came to be saved and what his journey & relationship with God has, and continues to grow him spiritually. We take a look into how brokenness & unresolved anger brought him closer to his purpose and how he is using his gifting to share the Gospel. Check out Blaque’s post “Hip Hop needs the Gospel as much as I do”. What did we unpack? Music Creativity & God Grace Salvation The importance of community Fun fact: Did you know Blaque Nubon was once comedian??! God came for THAT too. Thank you for tuning in!

South African Hip Hop artist Gyre broke into the scene in 2017 with his culture shifting debut digital album titled Queernomics. Although still relatively new to the industry, the self-anointed "King of the Queers" knows a thing or 2 about breaking boundaries and turning his creative flair into a viable business opportunity and lifestyle. Business is often regarded as a very serious endeavor and very often art and artists are not recognized as being business orientated. However in these changing times artists are forced to examine the realm of business in order to make a living and survive in this capitalist system. In this episode of Finance for hippies, the duo of Teethswag and Ndarkie invite Sibonakaliso A.K.A Gyre who is a hip hop artist, entrepreneur and an activist of the LGBTI community. He has also contributed on one of the tracks for this podcast. It is idealistic to think that one may be able to make their passion a business. Very often as the hosts of the show always say, it is “Art Over Money”. Gyre on this episode makes a very important statement on the fact that one cannot fight the urge to turn their passion into a business. He also makes the point that mentality is also very crucial when one seeks to use his or her passion into a workable business. So the question still remains, how do we turn our passions into businesses? Many challenges arise when trying to achieve this goal such as the fact that a lot of the time when trying to do even the basics of business practices, such as quoting prices for shows, people are often very nonchalant and ignorant in recognizing art as a business. Artists themselves also make it difficult for themselves when they do not take their art professionally by actually recognizing that they are delivering a service. This Episode of Finance for Hippies will definitely make you think about how to reconcile your art and passion with a few sound business practices.
