Lindsay is arguably the best female OCR racer out there. She's won the Spartan World Championships 3 times, and is the only one to have been able to do so. She has an incredible number of podium finishes in OCR and has also been competitive as a runner, mountain biker and nordic skier. This year, she's decided to shift her focus away from solely OCR and will also be doing sky races and gravel events like Unbound. Her performances are impressive but so are her laid back attitude, passion for sport and balance in life and training.
Lindsay Webster is already a Spartan legend. She recently brought home first place from Abu Dhabi, Spartan's first world championship outside of the US in over a decade to give her a third world championship in four years. No other Spartan athlete has ever won three times. What made this win even sweeter was the fact that her husband, Ryan Atkin, also won the men's championship for the first time.Today we're hearing from Lindsay about how she's able to win and what it was like to leave a full-time career and pursue being a pro athlete. Nicole Mericle is your 2019 Spartan Race World Champion. This is Nicole's first world championship. Nicole and Lindsay Webster have been going back and forth all year in the Spartan US Championship Series and at the Spartan North American Championship. Nicole and Lindsay are clearly the top two women in Spartan Racing right now. Lindsay has won most of their head-to-head matchups this year, but in the race that mattered most, Nicole Mericle stepped on the gas and won by nearly 16 minutes. Nicole's win at the Spartan World Championship this weekend was one of the most dominant World Championship performances we've ever seen, male or female. Her world championship places her alongside other past world champions including Lindsay Webster, Zuzana Cucomova, and Amelia Boone. We talk about how she was scared in the starting chute at Tahoe, why she comes out of the gate so fast at every race, and what her plans are for the Spartan Race Million Dollar Challenge. Rose Wetzel is a 2-time American Ninja Warrior finalist, a professional obstacle course racer, a personal trainer, and a new mom (as if she wasn’t running around enough already). She has spent her whole life pursuing athletic endeavors including trying out for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials (coming just seconds short of making it), and she has literally run hundreds of Spartan races and other brands of obstacle course racing in her career. She is so good that she actually makes a living as a professional racer, something very few are able to accomplish. Rose and I chat today not about what it’s like being a kick-ass elite-level obstacle course racer (even though she is indeed a badass), but instead she and I discuss what it takes for someone who wants to run their very first Spartan race. Beyond just the physical side of training (which we touch upon), we dive much deeper into the mindset you need to develop to get over the fears and apprehensions that so many people face when thinking about registering for an event they most likely aren’t capable of finishing...YET. We talk about how to set the right goals and create a “Diversified Portfolio of Motivations” so no matter how you perform at the race (or during any given day of training) you are set up for success instead of failure. And we talk about how to focus on small progressions every single day rather than much larger goals. If you’ve ever been on the fence and thought to yourself, “Man it sure would be cool to run something like a Spartan Race, but I’m not ready yet. Maybe SOMEDAY…” then this is the conversation to inspire you to get off the couch and onto the course! Guest Bio: Facebook|Twitter|Instagram Growing up in Seattle in a family of nine kids (could you imagine?!), Rose loved the feeling of running outside after tackling piles of dishes and laundry. Her love for running grew, and it landed her a track scholarship at Georgetown, where she met wonderful women she still calls her best friends, over a decade later. After college, Rose fulfilled a childhood dream of working at a summer camp before starting her own personal training business in order to encourage others to reach their health and fitness goals, while she tried to make the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. After coming up a couple seconds short in the 800 meters (half mile), Rose took a friend’s advice and tried a totally new challenge – an obstacle course race! A perfect match for her running background, strength skills, and love of adventure, Rose became a professional obstacle course racer (thanks to sponsors like Clif Bar), running up mountains in Spartan Races around the country and flying through obstacles on the hit show American Ninja Warrior. A year and a half ago, Rose and Tim, her husband, welcomed Baby Taylor Joi into the world, and after moving from Seattle to Boulder for more mountains and Ninja gym training options a couple months later, Rose battled post-partum depression for many months, finally emerging from the condition mentally stronger than ever. Her physical fitness recently caught up as she started the Spartan season strong last month, finishing Top 3 at the first Spartan National Series race, just one minute behind the reigning Spartan World Champion. She looks to race hard all year and inspire the moms out there to continue to chase their dreams if they so desire, and remember to make self-care a priority, through her Stackit Mamas program for new moms. In our last +1, we talked about my mission to become a Spartan World Champion. My heart skips a beat just typing that. (Which, btw, is a good “reverse indicator” as my Yoda would say. Btw2: When Phil and I chatted about my contemplations about raising my standards and going all in on the Spartan mission, he told me that I MUST go for it or the Universe will fire me from my job. Laughing.) So… The title of that last +1 was “Becoming a Champion.” Today’s it’s called “Being a Champion.” We’re going to talk about another coach of champions: Ben Bergeron. Ever heard of him? If you don’t know who he is, have you ever heard of CrossFit? If you’re alive and into Optimizing, my hunch is that you almost certainly have. One more question: Ever watch the CrossFit Games where the world’s best CrossFit athletes get together and see who is “The Fittest on Earth”? Those world-class CrossFit Games athletes are absolute BEASTS. As in: ASTONISHINGLY strong, skilled and tough. Only 40 men and 40 women (and 40 teams) make it through the regional qualifiers to the world championships. Most of the athletes who make it there are just happy to be among the world’s best. But a select few are there to win it. Those are the athletes Ben Bergeron coaches. In fact, he’s coached his athletes to six world championships. In 2016 he coached BOTH the men’s champion AND the women’s champion. (Which is kinda crazy awesome when you think about it.) All of that to say, Ben wrote a GREAT book called Chasing Excellence in which he shares his approach. We’ll chat about it a bit more in the next few +1s. Today I want to focus on one simple point. He and his athletes never talked about being champions. They were too focused on ACTING like a Champion NOW. Here’s how two-time champion Katrín Davíðsdóttir puts it: “Though I moved halfway around the world with the goal of making it back to the CrossFit Games, Ben and I never actually talked about the Games. We didn’t talk about qualifying, we didn’t talk about finishing in the top ten, and we certainly didn’t talk about winning. What we did talk about was giving full effort in every single moment of every single day, and becoming the best we could possibly be.” Today’s +1. You may or may not have aspirations to be an “official” “champion” of anything in your life. Of course, that’s fine. (Although I’d encourage you to think for a moment about what you COULD be the absolute best in the world at Jim Collins Hedgehog Style.) But, if you’re this far into this +1, I’m going with the assumption that you’re at least moderately committed to Optimizing. (Hah.) So, reach over to the virtual stovetop in your mind, turn the heat up to 212 degrees, and think about YOU at your ABSOLUTE (!) BEST. Then be that version of you Today. Moment to moment to moment. Put your old identity on a permanent vacation and act like a Champion.

The United States Army Rangers are an elite military formation of the United States Army. Each year they hold a competition to determine who the best of the best are. Captain Robert Killian and teammate SSG Erich Friedlein are the current champions of this prestigious title of “Best Rangers”. Think one percent of the top one percent of the best of the best soldiers, this is quite an honorable distinction. In 2014, after a long hiatus from sports and athletics, Andrea somewhat reluctantly ran her first Spartan Race, and she was immediately hooked. Andrea has since completed 79 Spartan Races along with a variety of other races. In the last five years of racing, she has earned 9 masters elite podiums, multiple age group podiums, she came in first in the 2018 Spartan US Championship Series and she is the 2018 50 and over Spartan World Champion. In 2019 alone, Andrea has come in first or second in her age group in every single Spartan Race she has run, and is currently #1 in the world in the women’s 55-59 age group.SEASONED ATHLETE STATS - ANDREA OWENAge: 57Sport: Obstacle Course RacingQuote: “Don’t use age as an excuse.”Contact: Instagram - @over50spartanSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/seasoned-athlete/donations
