We wanted to have at least one more episode on the OCRWC weekend and we were hoping to have an athlete on the show representing Europe (since there weren't as many as previous years)! Signy Karoline Kolsto is from Norway and has somewhat recently made the jump from age group to elite after having pretty impressive results quickly in the sport. She took 7th in the 3K, 5th in the 15K, her coed team took 2nd on the relay, and then she closed out the weekend by winning the 100 meter course! 0:00 – 2:58 – Intro 2:58 – 10:40 – Quick News 10:40 – 11:07 – Content Preface 11:07 - 44:37 - Signy Karoline Kolsto Interview 44:37 - End – Outro Next episode we plan to have an athlete on to talk about their experience throughout the Spartan's first 3K series! ____ News Stories: International Olympic Committee Endorses Modern Pentathlon Pink Mudgear Socks for National Breast Cancer Foundation Couple Hikes Mountain in Wedding Dress and Get Married Spartan Nashville Super and Sprint Results Spartan San Luis Potosí 3K and Beast Results Stone Cold Secret Link Boss Moment Secret Link Skiing Fall Secret Link Communication Tower Secret Link Zelda Tears Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 199. In the year where there are two OCRWCs I figured it would be great to hear from someone who went to compete in both of them! Ian Hosek has been a prominent member of USAOCR for a while now and he made the trip over to Belgium to compete in the first FISO OCR World Championships. More recently he competed in Spartan Race's OCRWC (man that's going to take some adjusting to) and took 2nd in the 3K, 2nd in the 15K, his men's relay team took 1st, and his coed team also took 1st! This year may have had FISO's first OCR World Championships but we still love Adventurey's weekend long OCRWC event as well! I haven't been this excited about a coach's body of work since reading the original CrossFit Journal articles by Greg Glassman in 2005. Rich Diaz's work in the endurance community and his unique protocol for energy system training (The "Flow" Method") has been very eye-opening for me personally in my fitness pursuits, and I believe more coaches and athletes should be exposed to his unique training method. His resume is beyond impressive and includes working with some of the best athletes in fitness racing today, including OCR champions such as Veejay Jones, Hyrox champions like Hunter McIntyre, and high-level CF athletes such as Ryan Fischer. A quick message from Will: "Hey, shoot me a text at (619) 485-2726. Who do you think will win the last US National Series race of the year? Veejay Jones or Ryan Atkins? Call your shot before the race on Sunday. - Rea Kolbl has never lost a race longer than eight hours. She won the 24-hour Spartan Ultra World Championship in Telluride this past weekend. She ran 120 kilometers (75 miles) in 23:59 to win her fourth 24-hour championship since 2017. She is one of only two women to win the Spartan Ultra Championship and World's Toughest Mudder. She is the only person to win them both wire-to-wire, and she holds the women's record for most miles at WTM (tied with Amelia Boone) and the Spartan Ultra Championship. Rea Kolbl is the greatest women's endurance OCR athlete ever. Rea joins us to talk about her race in Telluride, how she was able to pull off the win, and how to have a pre-race conversation with your loved ones when they volunteer to pit for you at a 24-hour race. Obstacle Course Racing World Championships is next weekend! I'm excited and I figured what better way to build excitement on the show than to have one of the best OCR athletes in the world on to talk about it. Veejay Jones was my first choice as he is someone who I have only had the privilege of talking to at previous NorAm events and he is both easy to talk to and likely to do very well in the upcoming 3k. He also put some solid work into his Black Forest OCR training facility. This was recorded last week so if there are any out of date comments made then that is why. 0:00 - 3:31 - Intro 3:31 - 13:39 - Quick News 13:39 - 14:12 - Content Preface 14:12 - 45:52 - Veejay Jones Interview 45:52 - End - Outro ____ News Stories: Spartan Pass for 2022 Spartan Kissimee Sprint Podiums: Men and Women Spartan Midwest Beast Podiums: Men and Women Deka FIT New Jersey Podiums: Men and Women Spartan European Championship Podiums: Men and Women Empowered Obstacle Barn Podiums: Men and Women Phoenix Race Tennessee Podiums: Men and Women Spartan Midwest Sprint Podiums: Men and Women Cerus Luv Podiums: Men, Women, and Ruk Mik Gerylo Spartan Red Deer Disqualification Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 84. Endurance News: Making swimming pools safer by reducing chlorine disinfection byproducts Swimming in indoor or outdoor pools is a healthy form of exercise and recreation for many people. However, studies have linked compounds that arise from chlorine disinfection of the pools to respiratory problems, including asthma, in avid swimmers. Now, researchers reporting in ACS' Environmental Science & Technology have found that using a complementary form of disinfection, known as copper-silver ionization (CSI), can decrease disinfection byproducts and cell toxicity of chlorinated swimming pool water. Disinfecting swimming pool water is necessary to inactivate harmful pathogens. Although an effective disinfectant, chlorine can react with organic matter and compounds introduced by swimmers, such as those in sweat, urine, sunscreens and cosmetics, to produce disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Epidemiological studies have linked DBPs to health problems, including respiratory issues, bladder cancer, and pregnancy and birth complications. One way to reduce the amount of added chlorine is through the use of complementary disinfection strategies, such as CSI, which involves generating antimicrobial copper and silver ions by electrolysis. Susan Richardson and colleagues wondered whether using CSI along with reduced chlorine levels could disinfect pool water while also reducing DBP formation and toxicity. To find out, the researchers collected water samples from two pools treated with CSI and chlorine -- one outdoor and one indoor. They detected 71 DBPs, some of which were quantified for the first time in pools. In experiments with mammalian cells in the lab, the team found that the indoor pool samples were more toxic to cells than the outdoor samples, likely because outdoor DBPs can volatilize in the open air or degrade with sunlight over time. In indoor pool water, the lowest levels of DBP formation and toxicity were observed when the lowest amount of chlorine was used in combination with CSI. To control for factors such as number of swimmers, temperature and pH, the researchers also conducted experiments in simulated pools with a solution added that mimics human body fluids, and they observed similar results. These data suggest that using CSI with lower amounts of chlorine could be a way to make swimming safer, the researchers say. Registration opens January 18th. Letter from Editor, Bill Plock, Why I Wanted to Join BRAC Some people may wonder why I wanted to join the BRAC board, now known as Coloradocycling.org. After all I am not known as a bike racer or a race promoter or race director. Those have been the typical titles of most board members. I am more known, athletically at least, as a triathlete—hopefully professionally more known as the owner/publisher of 303Endurance—which owns 303Cycling.com and 303Triathlon.com and the 303Endurance Podcast. So I am not your typical board member. But that’s precisely why I wanted to join the team. The current board has a lot of talent—on and off the bike. They care about cycling first and foremost. They care about racing too. They, like me want to do everything possible to foster the best cycling culture in the country. I met BRAC President Andy Johnson about a year ago and we shared a beer on my porch and brainstormed ideas on how we could create an environment of more inclusion and getting more people to explore racing or doing group bike events and rides. We talked about ways BRAC could provide more value to cycling. I then interviewed Executive Director Shawn Ferrel and learned more about him and it was clear these guys love bikes and the lifestyle that goes with them, just like I do. Endurance News: UCI to ban forearms time-trial position on road bikes First the super tuck, and now the popular breakaway position get the ax from the UCI, starting April 1. In a memorandum issued on February 8, the UCI indicated it will ban riders from racing with their forearms on their handlebars, in a time-trial like position, when on a road bike. Last week, the UCI indicated it would begin to enforce the rule prohibiting riders from the ‘super tuck’ descending position, where a rider sits on the top tube and curls into a tight position on a downhill. The news was greeted with mixed feelings, and VeloNews debated the merits of the rule and the UCI’s renewed interest in enforcing it. Both rules will start being enforced — and this is apparently not a joke — on April 1. Diversity in US cycling: How inclusion is being 'built from the ground up' During Black History Month, we check in with the national federation about its new grant programme. In 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement and the mass protests across the country highlighted the vast racial inequalities in the United States. It also forced the country's cycling federation to look closer at the lack of diversity in the sport and make plans to make cycling more inclusive. "We are committed to finding ways to make cycling look more like the population of the United States but we're a long way from that," CEO Rob De Martini said at the time. Spartan has officially purchased Tough Mudder! This is the biggest news in the OCR industry since the OCR industry became a thing approximately 10 years ago. We open the episode with a brief discussion of the Spartan/Tough Mudder purchase story so far. It has been an emotional journey. This past weekend was the first race of the 2020 Spartan US National Series in Jacksonville, Florida. Ryan Atkins and Lindsay Webster took home the wins for the men and the women. On today's episode, we talk with the top four male finishers about their race in Jacksonville. We will talk with the top female finishers in future episodes. (Note on that below). Each man we talked with had a slightly different take on the race, and we talked about slightly different topics with each one. Ryan Atkins commented on OCR and social media during the off-season. Veejay Jones also touched on social media and the lengths people go to document their workouts. Ryan Kempson talked about his one-second win over Ryan Woods for 3rd Place and Ryan Woods talked about the non-controversy that was his Herc Hoist. We need your help! Today is a LONG episode with four separate interviews. The top women from Jacksonville will each have shorter, individual episodes. Would you prefer one longer episode or several shorter episodes? Let us know in a review on Apple Podcasts and we will read it on a future episode. Thank you! --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! Well it is January. I was hoping to get an episode out sooner, but the holidays just have a way of messing up plans. So I did the best I could to make up for the long absense. In this episode, I share some insight on how to make this January the best yet. There are all sorts of info out there on New Years Resolutions of course. But if you want this year to be different than the past ones, listen in on some of my best advice. Do you suffer from Taper Tantrums? Many of the clients I work with have a hard time with tapers. Will cutting back on training really help your performance? Despite all the research many have a hard time accepting this fact. Well I share some incredible research showing how much tapering can actually help you, plus the best way to go about it. Finally, in my interview this episode I have on Veejay Jones. If you follow this sport regularly, then I probably don't need to say much about Veejay. He has been blowing up the sport with overwhelming success at a young age. With multiple first place elite finishes, Veejay is doing all the right things for a long and successful career. I wanted to get him on to learn more about what he contributes to his success. Veejay shares some of his training insight and some of his favorite types of workouts. He stresses the importance of strength training, understanding periodization, favorite recovery strategies, plus how to plan out your race season. All this and much more. Elite OCR athlete and Spartan Pro Team member Veejay Jones joins me on the podcast to talk about his win at the Spartan U.S. National Series race, how he trains and what he focuses on in his training, and about the upcoming show he's on, Million Dollar Mile. We start with Veejay telling me about his win in Alabama, and I ask him about his proficiency with obstacles. He then explains to me why the Spartan U.S. National Series isn't on his radar, and I ask him when he'll start to focus on winning Beasts. I also ask him whether or not he feels as though he's underestimated by the elite field. Veejay also tells me about his training with Richard Diaz, and how that's affected his performance at races. We then talk about the upcoming show Million Dollar Mile, and Veejay explains the premise of the show and the layout of the course. He tells me about what is like to work the other pros on the show, and I ask him how it compares to some of the other OCR-related shows we've seen. Lastly, Veejay tells me about what he will be focusing on, and the his goal races for the year.

I spoke with Veejay Jones all about his race, racing against Cody Moat and Hobie Call, and a little bit about the upcoming show Million Dollar Mile. I also spoke with Hobie Call about his return to racing this year, and Cody Moat about racing neck-and-neck with Veejay, and I ask them both about their Sprint race and what races they'll be at this year. I wasn't able to grab an interview with Cera Edgley at the venue, so I gave her a quick call on the road and Cera told me about her podium finish at the Sprint on Saturday, and more about the disqualification she and Timmie Brann received on Sunday.
This weekend is the second race in the Spartan US Championship Series. If Ryan Kempson and Nicole Mericle repeat their first place finish from Jacksonville they will be in strong position to win the entire five-race series. Jack Bauer and Will Hicks break down the athletes and what to expect from the race this weekend. Look forward to a muddy, sloppy race in Alabama. --- 0:00 Intro Let's talk some News! 3:19 No live-streaming of Spartan Alabama 4:46 Spartan Las Vegas race results 5:44 Veejay Jones and Nicole Mericle are ridiculous this year 8:51 Another Spartan podium disqualification 10:22 Spartan Greek Peak Sprint race results 10:52 Spartan Stadion France race results 12:35 The Million Dollar Mile comes to TV starring OCR athletes you know 16:13 Five Stars! 17:19 Spartan Alabama Preview with Jack Bauer 47:28 Outro --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! This week, I spoke to Veejay Jones, Spartan's youngest pro-team member and a strong contender in their championship series. We start with Veejay telling her all about the championship race in Chicago where Veejay placed second, conquering all the mud out there and beating out some top contenders. That leads us to discuss the different challenges of each of the races in Spartan's championship series, and Veejay tells me what he's expecting with Tahoe and how he plans to tackle it. He also shares what has helped him climb the ranks over the past two years, and he talks about the importance of recovery and his methods for it. I ask him about his plans for the next several years when it comes to OCR, and he tells me how he plans on maintaining his trajectory. Veejay tells me about how he's got his eye set on the North American OCR Championship race, which leads us into a discussion about mandatory obstacle completion and penalty loops. Lastly, he shares his goals for 2019, and talks about the lessons he's learned with nutrition and how he's changed it up to be better prepared for races.
Beni and Hunter bring on the only professional teenage OCR athlete, Veejay Jones. Veejay has been on the Spartan Pro Team and has more Spartan ELITE podiums that anyone near his age. -Veejay talks about how he actually is taking his training very lax and how that is giving him his best performances... -The kind of mentality that ensues when you realize you have 15+ years before you hit your prime...but already are racing the best in the Spartan scene... -His goal of beating Hunter (the reigning champ) at NORAM this coming August... ...and much more!
