This week we are thrilled to catch up with OCR superstar Nicole Mericle! Nicole is fresh off her 2nd place finish at Tough Mudder Arabia which was arguably one of the most competitive OCR races in history with a prize purse that did not disappoint! We also discuss Nicole's road to recovery after knee surgery, how the short course specialist changed her training to dominate a 8 hour event and much much more.
We have been wanting to have Alisa Petrova on the show for a while now with us first reaching out to her back in December 2022 to talk about the Spartan World Championships that year! Her being 9 hours ahead of us made it pretty difficult to plan a good time to record but it was worth recording at 5am our time to finally have her on the show! Alisa talks about how she wasn't medically allowed to engage in sports at a young age but eventually got into speed walking and later became involved with Hero Race. In more recent years she has continued to prove herself to be a podium threat at many championship events including the Spartan World Championships. Within the past month she took on a new challenge in the form of an ultra by competing and winning Tough Mudder Infinity in AlUla. We discuss the barriers of fueling, pacing, and dealing with poor race day communications at the event. View a complete transcript of the show HERE. “The more things you can do that bring you joy and don't feel as much like training, I think the better.”—Nicole Mericle Last year alone, Nicole placed 2nd in the 2019 Spartan US National Series, 1st in the 2019 15k North American OCR Championships, 2nd in the OCR North American Championships 3K, 2nd at the 2019 Spartan North American Championships, 1st at the 2019 Spartan World Championships, and 1st in the 2019 Spartan Trifecta World Championships. Through it all, she has found her background in running and rock climbing has prepared her well for the OCR and Spartan events. However, she has had to work hard to develop the strength and mindset needed for all elements of OCR. Keeping her “mental game” in check is a big factor of Nicole’s training. If one thing is not working out for her, Nicole will approach her goals in another way. Being flexible, but keeping her overall ambitions in sight, has played a key part in her OCR career. Although road running was causing more injuries than it was worth, she was able to channel her passion for competition and running into something that worked for her, becoming an inspiration to everyone and a world-class athlete in OCR. Nicole Mericle is your 2019 Spartan Race World Champion. This is Nicole's first world championship. Nicole and Lindsay Webster have been going back and forth all year in the Spartan US Championship Series and at the Spartan North American Championship. Nicole and Lindsay are clearly the top two women in Spartan Racing right now. Lindsay has won most of their head-to-head matchups this year, but in the race that mattered most, Nicole Mericle stepped on the gas and won by nearly 16 minutes. Nicole's win at the Spartan World Championship this weekend was one of the most dominant World Championship performances we've ever seen, male or female. Her world championship places her alongside other past world champions including Lindsay Webster, Zuzana Cucomova, and Amelia Boone. We talk about how she was scared in the starting chute at Tahoe, why she comes out of the gate so fast at every race, and what her plans are for the Spartan Race Million Dollar Challenge. Johnny Luna-Lima had the race of his life this weekend at Spartan Big Bear. He beat Ryan Atkins and the field for his first win of the 2019 Spartan US Series Championship and his first podium at a US Spartan Race ever. With his second-place finish Ryan Atkins has all but guaranteed he will win the 2019 Spartan US Championship when the final points are totaled after the upcoming final race in the series. On the women's side Lindsay Webster held off Rea Kolbl and Nicole Mericle for the win and moved into sole possession of first-place in the US series. Lindsay Webster and Nicole Mericle have won every race in the 2019 US Series Championship. With her third-place finish Nicole Mericle finds herself 24 points behind Lindsay Webster. Although she is technically behind Webster, due to the point structure of the US Series, she will be able to pass Webster in Utah for the series win as long as she does two things: 1) Finish no worse than 4th. 2) Finish ahead of Webster To state it simply: If Nicole Mericle can beat Lindsay Webster in Utah, she will become the first woman not named Lindsay Webster to win the Spartan US Championship Series. Lindsay Webster has won the series every year since it's inception in 2016. If Lindsay Webster beats Nicole Mericle in Utah she will defend her title and become the four-time defending champion of the Spartan US Championship Series. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! This weekend is the fourth of the five races in the Spartan US Championship Series. Jack Bauer and Will Hicks discuss the standings and who they expect to win the race this weekend in Big Bear. Three men have risen to the top of the field in the series points race. Ryan Atkins, Ryan Kempson, and Ryan Kent all need to win Big Bear or at least place high to remain in the hunt. On the women's side it has become a two-person race. Lindsay Webster and Nicole Mericle have separated themselves from the field and are both positioned to take the series win with two more strong races. Jack Bauer joins Will Hicks again to discuss the women's field for the 2019 Spartan season. Last year there were five women who dominated the Spartan US Series. Jack says this year there will be six women fighting for the podium each week. The six women to watch this year are Lindsay Webster, Faye Stenning, Rea Kolbl, Alyssa Hawley, Nicole Mericle, and newcomer Rebecca Hammond. Jack also talks about the dominance of Lindsay Webster. Jack says Lindsay will be a heavy favorite going into every race she enters this year. Do you want to help mold The OCR Report Podcast? Listen to the end of the episode. Nicole Mericle on Mental Game of Racing, Balance in Life and Diet 3 Alternative source: This week's podcast with Nicole miracle, ehm Mericle. Why miracle? Because many commented on her sudden appearance to Spartan Race accompanied by reaping the podium finishes one by one. But the truth is that she has been racing since childhood and has put a lot of work into her performance physically and mentally. During our lovely chat, we delve into topics like how she overcomes suffering, her mental preparation (and in the end of the episode I add more useful information about how to change your emotional state for better performance), her vision and nutrition. Let me know what you think and enjoy! Show-notes: The most important part we spoke about that really stood out to me was how Nicole overcomes suffering and pre-race nervousness. As she said, nervousness equals ready to race in her mind. That frame of mind allows her to calm down and reduce it. You can start using that method too! Our emotions are created by three different things: our focus, the meaning, and our physiology. By changing any part of the triad, you can change your emotion (after you get aware of it). What Nicole does is that she changes the meaning of the experience she has, therefore interrupting it. You can also change it by changing your physiology as it is deeply rooted in our brain - when we are happy we might jump, when we are sad we are slumpy and sloppy when tired. When it comes to running, a tired runner can be spotted by having a bad form. Here is an experiment for you. Next time you run and you get tired, focus on your form and posture. When you start getting sloppy notice how you feel. Then correct it to the proper form and compare the results. You can find Nicole here: Facebook: Nicole Mericle Instagram: @nickeldm

Hunter McIntyre was next followed by Mudstacle's Phil Harris and LeEarl Rugland. We chatted with James Appleton for an extended period of time to catch up with him and talk a little about Tough Guy. Nicole Mericle started racing obstacle course races last May. Over the past weekend, she notched a new achievement in her short OCR career with a win at the Spartan Race U.S. Championship Series in California. Prior to that her best performances were probably at Monterey Spartan Race 2016, 2 wins at Savage Race and then a second at OCR World Championships. So far this year she has placed 2nd at the Spartan Race San Jose Super and 3rd at the Seattle Super. Her background is in running and rock climbing. She ran for Rice University and was a 10:07 steeplechaser, 4:25 1500m (4:45 mile) runner there. Injuries from running after college pushed me to start rock climbing. I've climbed routes rated 5.12c and V7. We talk about these on the episode. A typical week would be maybe 50-60 miles running and climbing 3-6 times a week depending on time. She works as an EMT and doing post-baccalaureate classes in order to apply to Physicians Assistant school. After a hip injury sidelined me from track and road racing for almost 3 years, she found trail running helped in the recovery process. On the episode, she talks about how she made fun of OCR runners 1 month before I tried it. A friend opened her eyes to the competitive side of OCR and convinced me to try it out. Elated to be healthy and back in competition mode, she went from not being able to run more than 3 miles in March last year (due to hip injury) to racing all summer. She is still building back from my running hiatus, figuring this sport out and enjoying racing again, but as a highly competitive person she does have her sights set on winning Spartan World Championships and OCR World Championships this year. She hopes to inspire people to get outside, advocate for environmental stewardship and help others improve their health through exercise and nutrition. The NBC Spartan Race Series is just starting to heat up, there are the familiar faces and some not so familiar. Nicole Mericle has yet to become a household name in the sport but many believe that is subject to change. Her background as a collegiate Track and Field Steeple Chaser has provided her with the running pedigree to pose a threat to the pro field and thus far she's had some pretty impressive outings given she's only raced a little less than a dozen times in her career to date. I asked Nicole to be a featured guest so we can discuss her strategy, strengths and weaknesses leading into the Monterey NBC Spartan Super and she was open to sharing. Give a listen!
In this episode, we are live at the Spartan Race Championship Series in Seattle. We talk with Faye Stenning, Mark Batres, Robert Killian, Nicole Mericle, Ryan Atkins and Lindsay Webster about their race and what they thought of the course and competition. Additionally, Heather and I talk about our experience during the race, what we thought of the course, and the comparison between the Championship Series races and your average weekend Spartan.
