Tohono O'odham Mike Wilson's story gives us a compelling, personal, and geopolitical glimpse into the borderlands across a history of militarization, resistance, and transformation. How does one go from a U.S. Special Forces Green Beret in El Salvador to doing humanitarian aid work on the border? This is where Tohono O'odham Mike Wilson begins this podcast conversation, with a profound and personal story of transformation. It happened at the height of the U.S. counterinsurgency campaign in 1989, when Wilson accepted an invitation to eat dinner at a family's house in Sosonate, where he was stationed. At first Wilson took this as part of a military tactic to win the hearts and minds of the local population. But little did he know that it was his heart and mind that would be changed. In this conversation, Wilson is joined by University of Washington political scientist José Antonio Lucero, a native of El Paso and chair of the UW's Comparative History of Ideas Department. Lucero is the coauthor of their compelling and extraordinary new book What Side Are You On? A Tohono O'odham Life Across Borders. We conduct this audio interview in the same style of the book, with Wilson talking about his life story and the portrait it paints of the borderlands, and Lucero framing it in a broader geopolitical and historical context. There is much to cover, since Wilson's story starts with growing up indigenous in the segregated mining town of Ajo, Arizona in the mid-20th century, to the grave consequences of U.S. foreign policy in Central America in the 1980s, to the militarization of the border in the 1990s and 2000s, and finally to the humanitarian aid work that he still does to this day. We talk about all this, with the added bonus of hearing their thoughts on the U.S. elections and what it means for the borderlands. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/border-chronicle/support

In the intricate dance of life, sometimes we find ourselves drawn to stories that stir our souls, tales of profound resilience and deep spiritual awakening. Today's episode brings such a story to our ears as we welcome Tu Lam, a spiritual warrior whose journey from war-torn Vietnam to the disciplined world of Special Forces unveils the essence of the human spirit and the transformative power of inner peace.Tu Lam's life began amidst the chaos of the Vietnam War, a tumultuous start that would shape his destiny in ways unimaginable. His early years were marked by survival, escaping the horrors of war on a fishing boat with his mother, facing pirates, storms, and near starvation. Yet, this early exposure to adversity planted the seeds of resilience and an unyielding will to overcome. As a young refugee in America, Tu faced the harsh realities of racism and poverty. These challenges, however, only strengthened his resolve. Guided by the warrior ethos of the samurai, he delved into the teachings of Bushido, finding solace and purpose in its ancient virtues of honor, duty, and compassion. It was during these formative years that he began to forge the path of a modern-day warrior, one who fights not just physical battles, but also the inner conflicts that shape our lives.Tu's journey into the military was a natural progression. At the age of 18, he joined the Army, and by 21, he was a Special Forces Green Beret, living the warrior's path he had admired since childhood. His military career took him to the most volatile regions of the world, where he fought for the oppressed and protected the innocent. Yet, amidst the valor and the victories, he carried with him the heavy burdens of war, trauma, and the relentless quest for meaning. In this profound conversation, Tu Lam shares, “Purpose, there was a higher purpose. I didn't know it at the time.” His reflections reveal a deep understanding of the karmic and dharmic roles we play in the universe. As a warrior, he protected, fought, and survived, embodying the very essence of his dharma. But it wasn't until he began his spiritual journey, much later in life, that he truly understood the higher purpose guiding him.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSResilience in Adversity: Tu Lam's story teaches us that even in the darkest times, resilience is born. His survival through war and hardship as a child laid the foundation for a life of tenacity and strength. The Power of Inner Peace: Despite the chaos around him, Tu found solace in the teachings of Bushido and later through meditation and spiritual practices. This inner peace became his sanctuary and source of strength.Forgiveness and Healing: Tu's journey underscores the importance of forgiveness—not just of others, but of oneself. Through meditation and introspection, he learned to forgive his past and embrace healing.Tu's story is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for transformation. After retiring from the military, he faced a new battle—reconciling his past traumas and finding a path to inner peace. It was through meditation, journaling, and the exploration of various spiritual practices that he began to heal. His experiences with psychedelics, such as mushrooms and iboga, provided profound insights and accelerated his journey towards self-discovery and forgiveness. He describes a pivotal moment, saying, “I found God within me and you and everything. We're all one.”This realization became the cornerstone of his spiritual awakening, a truth that transcended the pain and suffering of his past. Tu Lam's story is not just about survival; it's about thriving through understanding and embracing our true selves. In conclusion, Tu Lam's life journey from a war-torn refugee to a decorated Green Beret and finally to a spiritual warrior is a powerful narrative of resilience, transformation, and the pursuit of inner peace. His story reminds us that no matter where we start, our paths can lead us to profound spiritual awakenings and deeper understandings of our place in the universe. Please enjoy my conversation with Tu Lam.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

“Does that own me, or do I own it?” In today's episode, Andy is talking with Herb Thompson, retired Army Green Beret. And they cover a lot of ground. Herb has had the deck stacked against him many times throughout his life. Any one of them could have easily overtaken him and changed the trajectory of his life. However, that very quote at the beginning has allowed him to keep things in perspective and keep them in order.Herb grew up living a life of poverty in a trailer park. However, instead of allowing his humble beginnings to keep him down, he used it to drive him. He saw many people living around him in the trailer park who had given up and were living defeated lives. When thinking back about those days, Herb sees examples of his core value of positivity throughout.Another mantra he adopted during his special forces training was to “keep stepping, one more step, one more step.” He has applied that to his daily life and shares what it means with Andy.Herb has written a book to help military men and women successfully transfer out of the military and into civilian life. It's called the Transition Mission: A Green Beret's approach to transition from military service. After spending 20 years in the military, Herb found himself at another one of those crossroads. He joined the military at 17 and it's the only job he ever had. What do I do now? How do I get a civilian job? For that matter, what job am I qualified to get? How do I find my calling into a new career. As you might imagine, Herb's advice and mantra is “Own your journey!” He relied on the skills he learned in the Army and applied them to help him in his career transition. The first thing he did was to get an MBA from Cornell. He knew he was lacking the business language and experience, so he kept taking one more step, one more step. He also intentionally engaged in informational interviews with people in many different professions so he could get a better understanding of those careers. It really served two purposes. First, he learned a lot about business and careers. Second, he met a lot of people. He built an amazing network that has served him well in many ways.Herb admits that his life is as fulfilling today in his new ventures as he was in the military. The last thing I'll encourage you to listen for in the interview is Herb's strong sense of who he is. He knows that if he is happy with himself, he'll be able to help those around him and make them happy as well. Herb is constantly reminded of this concept by his 18-year-old son. When Herb mentions him in the interview, you can almost hear him smiling. His son has Aspergers and marches to the beat of his own drum and Herb couldn't be prouder. He presents his true, authentic, vulnerable self to the world and if you like him. Great. And if you don't like him? That's okay too. You can't make everyone happy, so you might as well make yourself happy. Good advice from Herb. Hope you find value in this discussion. Please share with anyone who you feel will benefit from listening. On today's episode, Dennis speaks with Former Green Beret, Author, DoD Contractor and head security for Kid Rock, Daniel Fielding. Daniel Fielding is a former Special Forces Green Beret, a loving husband, a father of three children, a celebrity bodyguard, and a bestselling author. He developed the tools he puts forth in his book through his life experiences, including his time in the Special Forces. Through out his life, Daniel developed and created The Asset Mindset philosophy to create success in life. He has overcome great challenges achieving goals that many others would believe were impossible. While in his teens, Daniel won multiple martial art tournaments which included two National Championships without even realizing he was using The Asset Mindset at the time. Later, he became a US Army soldier and one of the very few to become an elite Special Forces Green Beret. Even after leaving the Special Forces, Daniel found myself in surreal situations working for and befriending celebrities thanks to The Asset Mindset. He has been fortunate to travel the world making so many of his different dreams come true. Some of these dreams he would have also deemed impossible if it was not for the positivity of The Asset Mindset. We all build and create our mindsets either positively or negatively and continue to do so throughout our lives. The Asset Mindset is the positive means that Daniel has chosen to share with others to help them to achieve success in their lives. Today, Dennis and Daniel discuss the power of human connection, being a good human being, remembering the brothers his lost in the war, the technique to approaching life, taking ownership of your life and effectively pursue your goals as never before. On today's episode, Dennis is joined again by with RET. Delta Force Operator and Founder of Blue Bearing Solutions, Kyle Morgan. Kyle is the Founder & CEO at Blu Bearing Solutions & for the past 20 years, he's served our country by fighting with elite special operations units in the harshest environments. He strived for excellence in everything he did and discovered that he thrives at leading cross-functional teams, creating inclusion, and making critical decisions under extreme stress. Kyle has been at the frontlines of every American kinetic conflict since 9/11.  Starting as an infantryman in Iraq in 2003, then as a Special Forces Green Beret, and for the last 11 years as a Special Operator within the Army's 1st SFOD-D Combat Applications Group, where he led and managed elite teams that specialize in hostage rescue.   Of all his experiences in the Service, one of the most challenging days was reacting to an attack while deployed as a Special Operations Advisor to the US Embassy in Bamako, Mali. His mission was to be a military advisor to the US Ambassador. This deployment had him engaging high-level State Department officials wearing a suit daily. Nothing about this was kinetic, but without regard for his safety, he ran towards the sounds of gunfire and relied on the training he had up to that point; Kyle formed a small team and led them to intervene in this horrendous terrorist attack on the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, Mali on 20 November 2015. Hundreds of innocent civilians were being held, hostage. This attack claimed the lives of twenty-three innocent civilians, including one American citizen.  This attack challenged him physically, mentally, and spiritually. Physically they were in control, and he had to fight on their terms. Mentally he had no time to prepare for what unfolded. Spiritually the evil that transpired and he witnessed was disgusting. This was the longest day of Kyle's life. That pushed his personal & professional abilities to new heights. He'll always be grateful for the personal development that happened during those very long and frustrating days that followed.  Blu Bearing Solutions is the culmination of his career in the military. They focus on building the “Protector” mindset and firearms instruction designed for law enforcement officers and law-abiding citizens, teaching students active shooter & crisis response tactics being used on the battlefield today by one of the most elite fighting forces in the world.” Today, Dennis and Kyle discuss standardized active shooter training, the problems of receiving proper training, holding yourself accountable, never staying stagnant, safe guarding and helping others, the negatives of comparing trauma, learning to love yourself and making sacrifices and showing up every single day. I've known Dan Fielding for probably 4 or 5 years. He's one of these guys that you just respect from the time you meet him. He's served the country with great distinction, he's a solid guy and he's committed to his work and America. "The Asset Mindset: A Special Forces Perspective For Achieving Success" is Dan's book. You can order it here. Personally, I highly suggest it. In the interview below, Dan speaks to being a Special Forces Green Beret, something others failed to accomplish. He talked about his journey of what spurred him to join the military. He tells me what it's like to work for Kid Rock, the story of meeting him then working for him, and much more. I got him on to talk about his book because I found it inspiring, motivating, and uplifting. I also think that even though I wasn't in any of the situations Dan's found himself in, I have the Asset Mindset myself. "One of the key points to the Asset Mindset is that you don't have to be Special Forces to have the Asset Mindset, but to be Special Forces, you have to have it." He told me about how is wife kind of steered him in the right direction to write the book. He said he thought he'd help other people by sharing his experiences. Dan said "I just started writing and the Asset Mindset was born." "You make your destiny. And that's why I say "Everyone is their own greatest asset."" He spoke to how "lucky" he was. In his words, he made his own luck through preparation. To Dan, that's a big part of achieving success. I couldn't agree more. If you're wondering what Kid Rock thinks of Dan and his book - “I would not only ask you to support The Asset Mindset by Daniel Fielding, I will TELL YOU. It can change the path you're on for the better! I truly believe his book will improve all of our lives. Thank you for your service, Dan. God bless America.”—KID ROCK Thanks You Dan, for this book, and for your service to this great country! -Meltdown-

Travis is a retired special forces Green Beret who has always had a strong passion for health and physical fitness. Still, a near-fatal parachute accident inspired him to push himself even further. He later formed Alpha Elite Performance and launched his supplement brand while he recovered from it. Travis recently started a great new nonprofit for military veterans, Alpha Elite Performance Outdoors and has a new company selling ammunition, Mutant Munition. Here's a breakdown of what to expect in this episode: He had an easy transition out of the military, but it wasn't easy. You have to be persistent and proactive. What distinguishes his product from those of others? It would be best if you stepped over the bodies to get to the people who can help. And so much more! ~ About Travis Wilson: Travis Wilson is a 21-year military veteran who spent 13 years as a U.S. Army Green Beret. Travis entered the Army in 1995 as an Airborne Medic to become an 18D Green Beret Medic one day. After six years in the service, Travis left the Army to attend Boise State University, where he studied Exercise Science and played hockey for the ACHA club hockey program. After completing school, Travis returned to the Army to meet his special forces training and was chosen to be an 18E Communications Specialist. He was then assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group out of Colorado Springs, where he remained until his retirement in 2017. While serving as a Green Beret, Travis also started a supplement nutrition store called Caliber Nutrition. After juggling the challenges of active duty and a supplement store along with multiple deployments, Travis decided that it was time to retire and start his product line, Alpha Elite Performance – a brand founded upon the consummate professionalism and high physical fitness standards characteristic of the Special Forces community. Established in Colorado Springs, CO., Alpha Elite Performance reflects Travis' dedication to the provision of high-quality supplements not just for Green Berets but for all active-duty military and civilians alike. Still in the fight of his life – for his life. That's the real-life story of this week's Team Never Quit guest, Chris Cathers, a former US Army Green Beret and CIA paramilitary Global Response Staff (GRS) contractor with 12 deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and North Africa. And if Chris' PTS struggles weren't enough, Chris speaks openly about the stage 4 bone cancer he has had for over a year. Struggling to find adequate medical care opened his eyes to the difficulty of finding the right team for any aspect of medicine, and he has dedicated himself to encouraging his military brothers and sisters to seek help immediately and not downplay the signs. Chris and his business partner Daniel also aim to raise awareness of the veteran suicide epidemic via a documentary, “Brother's Keeper”, currently in production. Chris has established a nonprofit organization to help raise funds for a small number of other nonprofit and for-profit businesses, committed to giving our veterans a hand in their fight. In this episode you will hear: At one time, I was feeling really good. I was doing protection for celebrities for 5 years, as well as Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, and lifting a lot. My femur was compromised to the point that I was close to snapping it. I always prepare myself for the worst and hope for the best. You have to advocate for yourself, or you won't have a good success rate. Unfortunately with what I've got, radiation & chemo doesn't work. It's more of a Hail Mary. My wife calls me a cockroach. “Man, this guy's stubborn.” Sports is what kept me on the right path. I feel like a sheepdog – I like to keep the wolves at bay. I really enjoy protecting people. If I would redline my body, all the “noise” would settle down. Doing something bigger than you has always been a calling for me. Initially, my outlook wasn't great - 29% and the 5-year survival rate wasn't good. I'm a patriot and I love our country, I think we're the best country on the planet, but we're doing our damnedest to fuck it up. That's not acceptable to me. We didn't think we could have children, 1 - I'm old as dirt and I'm stage 4. So we were not planning on having a child, but… Comparison is the thief of joy.  Support the Mission:  https://www.wearebrotherskeeper.com/ Follow Chris on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chris_cathers/ Follow Us on Social: https://www.instagram.com/marcusluttrell/ https://www.instagram.com/andrewbrockenbush/ https://www.instagram.com/team_neverquit/

While the deep-rooted effects of traumatic brain injury are not yet fully understood, Andrew Marr, retired Special Forces, Green Beret, Warrior Angels Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, as well as co-author of Tales from the Blast Factory, brings to life his actual experiences and transparency as it relates to bringing resolve to his brain injury issues, and coming back to a fulfilled life serving others with similar conditions. Listen in as Andrew gets real with our listening audience. He has an epic testimony to tell.    In this episode you will hear:   Andrew's story is that of the principles of resiliency after traumatic brain injuries. You don't have an emotional problem. You have a brain health problem. There are real solutions available. I lost complete control of all emotions. Depression, anxiety, alcoholism, and the inability to make good decisions were daily occurrences. Define what it is you want to be and start being that. I realized at that moment that I was of no value to him [my son] or my family in the condition that I was in. My mental state was going to ruin the things I said I loved in my life. 3 promises I made to myself: 1. I was going to return to be the man of my pre-injury status. 2. I was going to find a way to come off all the medication I was told I would have to be on for the rest of my life. 3. After accomplishing #1 & #2, I was going to spend the rest of my life helping other people just like myself to get thru it and get to the other side. Even though none of my problems were fixed yet, I now had a compass, direction, and destination. There are not words to describe what I experienced in that state of consciousness [with psychedelics). Any identification of self completely evaporated. I understood the interconnectedness of all things. I was engulfed in intelligent love. What the microscope is to biology and what the telescope is to astronomy, psychedelics is to human psychology.
