As well as updating you on the drama I also share a response from Bondi Sands before moving on to share some new, to me, sunscreens from Glow Recipe, Innisfree, Pai and Nivea. I you enjoy this episode do please leave a rating or review wherever you like to get your podcasts – it does make a difference. Welcome to Bri Books! Today I'm sharing the 7 best sunscreens for dark skin. It's the dog days of summer: when temperatures start to soar around sunrise. I'm somewhat on the sunscreen beat, you could say, thanks to my writing about SPFs at Glamour.com. My stories include a review of Black Girl Sunscreen and ‘11 Women of Color on the Best Sunscreens for Dark Skin.' 1:30: The fact is, anyone, no matter skin tone, can get sunburned. Repeated unprotected sun exposure can cause skin damage, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. It's no secret that historically the beauty industry hasn't made slathering up with SPF an enjoyable experience--far too many formulations aren't made to blend in on dark skin. I'm sharing with you my holy grail picks that don't leave a greasy residue or ashy tone behind. 2:55: #1: Black Girl Sunscreen's founder, Shontay Lundy, was having a beach day in Miami and had a hard time finding a sunscreen that didn't leave residue on her skin. At that moment, BGSS was born as a solution for Black women looking to protect their skin. Since they've, they've expanded nationally to Target stores and secured a $1M investment recently. One of my favorite things about BGSS is that it absorbs quickly and is a great base for makeup. I can't tell you what a relief it is to be able to sweat without worrying if sunscreen is leaving streaks down my face. BGSS is available at Target for $15.99. 4:20 #2: La Roche Posay SPF 100 Anthelios Face and Body sunscreen: This is a sunscreen I reach for whenever I'm on a beach or outdoors all day. At SPF 100, it's great for children and adults with sun-sensitive skin. It melts right into the skin and is great if you need to be confident in your SPF protection if you're hiking, walking, or at the beach. I recommend it for part of your year-round SPF collection. La Roche Posay SPF 100 is available online for $25.00. 5:36: #3: Peter Thomas Roth Max Matte SPF 45: This mattifying shine control sunscreen feels so luxurious. I love the weightless, sheer finish it gives. The texture feels like any other moisturizer, but with the protection of sunscreen. Pro tip: Use this SPF to create your dream tinted moisturizer: I recommend applying a few drops of liquid foundation into the SPF. Also, this sunscreen is phenomenal for the decolletage, and for building the habit of applying sunscreen to the neck, collar, top of the chest, and other areas that are prone to burning. Peter Thomas Roth Max Matte SPF 45 is available for $34 at Sephora. 7:25 #4: La Roche Posay AOX SPF Serum: This has become my favorite SPF serum because it reminds me of the importance of wearing sunscreen year-round. During winter, when we don't have to worry about sweat, we have to stay vigilant about wearing sunscreen. It's lightweight enough to be worn alone, with a moisturizer, or under makeup. La Roche Posay AOX SPF Serum is available for $42.50. 8:20: #5: Bask Suncare SPF 30: This sunscreen feels good and does good at the same time. Bask Suncare partners with the Sun Protection Foundation to increase access to sunscreen. This reef-safe SPF is free of oxybenzone, parabens, sulfates, and irritants, and I feel the light vanilla and coconut scent gives a childhood memory of days and nights spent outside. Bask Suncare SPF 30 is available for $28 at Basksuncare.com 9:40 #6: Sol de Janerio Bum Bum Sol Oil SPF30: This super luxe feeling and smelling oil formula combines reef-safe SPF30 and skin smoothers like capucha butter and acai oil. It's infused with Sol de Janeiro's iconic fragrance, and it's one of the sunscreens I reach for if I'm having a long day in the sand or a sweaty day in NYC. After showering, I'll throw this oil on my body and go about my day. The scent has peachy-tropical notes with hints of coconut vanilla. It truly smells like summer. Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Sol Oil SPF30 is available for $38. 11:20 #7: Farmacy Green Defense Mineral Sunscreen: This zinc oxide mineral sunscreen sits on the skin surface to reflect damaging UVA and UVB rays. This is a great SPF pick if you want to dip your toe into the world of mineral sunscreens. I put it on the areas that are underlooked and prone to burning, like the back of my legs, the inside of my arms, etc. It's definitely the SPF I'll be using this fall and winter to remind me that if the sun's up, the sunscreen's gotta go on. Farmacy Green Defense Mineral Sunscreen is available at Sephora for $36. High Iron, Water intake and fingers swelling, To sunscreen or not to sunscreen, Cornstarch in medication, Health Rewards Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here Show Notes: News topic du jour: Randomized crossover trial of a modified ketogenic diet in Alzheimer’s disease 1. High Iron [20:36] Tom says: I have crohns disease and am a shift worker. I've had success with paleo in the past but found it hard to stick with while being tired at work and then being the only one in my household with dietary issues. My wife after not feeling well for years, always complaining about being tired and getting sinus infections, decided recently to do paleo with me. Things were going great but then we just received blood work where everything was in normal range except she had high iron (257 MG). Is this something to be concerned about? If so, how can she counteract this so we can both stay on track? Side note: she feels better than normal but still suffers from some fatigue. We also have two toddlers at home. 2. Water intake and fingers swelling [22:26] Jill says: I am not on a ketogenic diet, but I eat high protein, LOTS of vegetaible, no carbs other than fruit and no processed or packaged foods. I use salt, everything but the bagel seasoning, and other similar seasonings in my food. I don't watch my sodium intake and use seasonings liberally. I drink about 200 oz of water a day and workout about an hour a day lifting weights and cardio. In the last month, I have noticed my fingers swell and I feel it in my face as well. It's nothing major, but it's umcomfortable and I also wake up with swelling. I do drink coffee, tea, and some sero sugar sparkling water. I do take magnesium and other multi-type supplements. Am I drinking too much water? Do I need to have less salt? I got the free sample of your LMNT drink and I had one this morning and it seems worse than ever. Any advice? 3. What's the D-ealy, yo? To sunscreen or not to sunscreen, that is the evidence-based question. [26:29] Erik says: Just kidding about the evidence-based part. I know that grinds your gears. Dear Robb and Nicki, Boring ego-stroking stuff: I've been a long time listener since the way-way back Paleo Solution days. I have probably listened to every episode since the low-100s of the Paleo Solution podcast and am still catching up to the end of that one while also rotating in the Healthy Rebellion Radio. I like that you've returned to the Q&A format. I missed that -- not that the interviews were bad! P.S. I work in technology for a living and would be interested in helping you try to figure out the live caller stuff. The meaty bits: I am a mole-y person. I have quite a few dark/"liver" spots. My maternal grandmother was covered in them by the time she reached her 80s. There's no skin cancer anywhere in the family that's been reported/recorded. I go to the dermatologist to get a yearly body scan/mole check. I try to have good sun hygiene. I live outside Atlanta, Georgia, and I attempt to get outside and walk shirtless / in shorts any day there's sun. I try to do this after lunch / in the afternoon for anywhere from 20-40 minutes. My street is woodsy and often partially shaded, so this isn't as if I'm sitting around tanning for 40 minutes. I have never gotten a sunburn from this practice, and I don't think I've even gotten pink. This doesn't result in much of a tan by the end of the season. You often talk about full-spectrum exposure and minimum effective dosing (MED). So, this is my practice in an attempt to keep my D levels up. I also supplement with ~4000IU of Carlson's D drops daily, although less in the summer if I've been better about exposure. My blood serum levels are usually "normal" as far as obese, sick, dying Americans go, but it's probably low-normal for us paleo folk. When I usually get my yearly checkup (~January) in the dead of winter, it's around 30ng/mL. Usually, I end up getting one sunburn a year from stupidity. I misjudge my exposure when out playing (like on a friend's boat). By the time of year that this happens, it's usually late in the season, and it's not a horrific purple death burn. But it's usually enough to result in meaningful peeling. I know this is bad. I promise not to do it again this year. When getting my yearly mole check, the dermatologist asked about sun exposure and basically said that I should pretty much always be slathered in SPF30-50 no matter what. She even went so far as to mention "recent studies" that showed that sunscreen didn't impair vitamin D conversion and took the time to mention that D was easy to supplement. Now, I'm certainly an armchair functional medicine doctor at best (after all, after hundreds if not thousands of hours of Robb Wolf and Chris Kresser podcasts and tens of thousands of words of blogs read over the years). In my "expert" scientific opinion, we barely know shit about how the human body works. Sure, we can synth up some D in the lab and guzzle it down and affect our serum D-25. But do we really, truly understand what the complete picture of sun-on-skin exposure is from soup to nuts? Is D-guzzling (get your mind out of the gutter, Robb) and avoiding literal sun-on-skin exposure really the healthiest choice? For fuck's sake, we just discovered new muscles, tendons, and ligaments in 2020 (so I've heard). I'm supposed to believe that just because some (likely industry-funded) studies showed that some poor slobs who slathered up with sunscreen increased their serum D from "pitiful as fuck" to "marginally shit", we're supposed to assume that "this is the way"? Anyway, I wanted to get your opinion on this particular issue as I know it comes up from time to time, and I know that things do change here and again. And, especially given the recent studies regarding serum D levels and risk of serious COVID complications, all the more reason to be considering "whole picture"/systemic things. Thanks! P.S. I am happy to follow up, get additional tests, etc., if it's helpful. I'll likely be getting my 2021 checkup soon. There's also some inflammation/lipid profile nonsense going on that I'd love to get your thoughts on, too. 4. Cornstarch in medication [38:14] Ryan says: I am on the paleomedicina (zsofia clemens/PKD) dietary protocol for lifelong autoimmune + mental + gut health issues. I only take one daily medication over the counter. Here is my issue... the one that I take is 2X the price of another brand of the same active ingredient. The only reason I don’t choose to try the much more affordable option is cornstarch. I’m so hesitant to knowingly ingest cornstarch. That’s the only reason. The one I take doesn’t have “cornstarch “ in the ingredients while I could be saving twice as much money (and stress) by being able to take the med that uses cornstarch. I wonder if, and hope that I’m being overly paranoid. Do you think cornstarch as a non-active ingredient in a medication is reason enough not to take that med? Or might it be worth giving a switch? Thanks for your time.... be safe and happy! Cheers. 5. Health Rewards [41:21] SJ says: Hi Robb! I was wondering what you think of the idea of people being rewarded with tax cuts and benefits for meeting certain health markers to motivate people to change their eating habits and lifestyles. It’s not altering anyone’s freedom of choice, but encouraging people to pay more attention to their health and diet and – it’s a choice. I’d sure love to see higher sales tax on junk food. But that would never happen. Thanks Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Proper hydration is more than just drinking water. You need electrolytes too! Green sun safety With the high temperatures of the past week, we've all been flocking to the beach. But what are the most environmentally-friendly ways to keep sun safe at the beach? First off, stay out of the sun between 10am-4pm, September to April. The beach is wonderful early in the morning or late afternoon. If you’re at the beach outside of these times, sun shades you put up are a good idea. Make sure you get a good one, not a cheap throw away. If you need more protection, you'll be slapping on the sunscreen. But which kind? There are two varieties: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreen absorbs UV light to prevent it from causing damage. But the chemicals; like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, octisalate, avobenzone and homosalate, have been identified as being particularly dangerous for eco-systems. There's evidence they have been making coral more susceptible to bleaching, deforming baby coral and degrading its resilience to climate change. Hawaii is now looking at banning these chemicals. They are also proven hormone disrupters that can seep through human and animal skin into other bodily tissue. And it’s not just the environment: Oxybenzone was recently found in 96 per cent of the population by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the US. That’s an alarming statistic when you learn that this chemical can affect a man’s sperm count and contribute to the development of painful endometriosis in women. So you might like to consider physical sunscreen, which sits on top of the skin, using the minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The Cancer Society says whether it’s a chemical or physical sunscreen, check the sunscreen you’re using does the job it’s meant to do. It needs to be broad-spectrum (which protects from UVA and UVB rays), water-resistant, SPF30+ and meet the Australia-New Zealand standard. LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE

Dr Christin Burd speaks with ecancertv at AACR 2016 about her research into the potential for SPF30 sunscreen to delay the onset of melanoma. Though the damaging potential of UVA and UVB radiation has long been known, attitudes in the cosmetic industry (which regulates sun-screen lotion development) are at odds with the animal testing required to prove a direct delay of melanoma onset in UV sensitive knockout mice.
Can it be? Yes! It’s me! Marc Hershon, your host and SPF30 sunscreen for Epi136 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. We’re back once again with a Succotash Clips episode, with an installment jam-packed with fresh clippage. A couple of things before we get into the meat of this show… NOT CLIPS First of all, I’m thinking of starting a campaign to change the generic name of “podcast” to “soundcast”. There are three trademarks in the US for soundcast but two of them are for audio equipment and the third is for a teleconferencing service. So if we all start using soundcast now to describe the podcast experience, there’s a good chance we can keep it in the public domain. (We’ve talked on the show before about how the podcast name was coined around the iPod from Apple, a device that is no longer even produced. And it will do away with the even more awkward “video podcast” which isn’t really even a thing – the video folks can just have videocasts if they want that for a name.) Secondly, it looks like I’ll be participating in an upcoming celebration of the 40th anniversary of Spaghetti Jam in San Francisco. Spaghetti Jam was an early improv group/pickup game where pretty much any of the San Francisco-based improvisers at the time could drop in, including folks like Robin Williams, Jim Crenna, Lorenzo Matawaran, Michael Bossier, John Elk, Debi Durst, and a whole bunch of others, including yours truly. Well, we’re getting what’s left of the Jam back together for one night. On Sunday, September 11th, we’ll be at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. For more info, Check out the Spaghetti Jam page on Facebook. And finally, I’m also beginning to get prepared for this year’s 5th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. Last episode I had a brief interview with Chris Mancini, co-host of the Comedy Film Nerds podcast and co-organizer of the LA Podfast. And in that talk we mentioned that I will be on-hand to moderate the Podcast And Journalism panel, which is going to be great fun. It’s going to be on at 2 PM on Sunday, and the panelists include Phoebe Judge and Lauren Spohrer from the Criminal podcast and Jefferson Graham of USA Today. All right, that’s about me. Now let’s get to the good stuff. For Succotash Clips this time around, we’ve for snippets from Big Question, Comedy Film Nerds, Fake The Nation, Here We Are, Monday Morning Podcast, Psycho Pshow, WTF and the most recent entrant into the Podcast Graveyard to date — the Taco Tuesday Podcast, our buddies in Killeen, Texas, who decided to shut it down just this week with their 100th episode. Add to that a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, whose been all over the Republicant and Democrap Conventions the past couple of weeks, a brand new spot from Henderson’s Pants and we will toss in a little closing ditty from friend-of-Succotash Abner Serd. CLIPS WTFI’m reviewing the episode out this week of WTF with Marc Maron, who has Jane Lynch in the garage as his guest. I think she’s hilarious and she also seems pretty level-headed and decent as a person. In this sample from the show, she’s talking about hoW she first met director and comic/actor, Christopher Guest, then later ended up in his Best In Show movie. Big QuestionOur next clip comes from the Big Question podcast and was submitted directly to us through our direct upload link. The note that accompanied it tells us a bit about the show and goes a little something like this: “Saw your requests for submissions on Twitter and figured that we’d throw our collective hats in the ring. The Big Question podcast has been in operation for slightly over a year and brings a weekly dose of no holds barred comedy and discussion. The four regular hosts are joined by a ever-changing collection of guests where we discuss a mass of topics from having sex with David Cameron for money (epi 2) to flatmates cleanliness problems (epi 33) to the inner workings of gay culture with our regularly occurring friend Rocchi." Comedy Film NerdsThe other chief source for our clips here on Succotash Clips is our noble Associate Producer Tyson Saner. From his lair in an undisclosed location somewhere where in the northern reaches of California, Tyson is constantly slicing and dicing delectable chunks of podcast goodness. We have several he’s cooked up this week and the first is from the aforementioned Comedy Film Nerds podcast, hosted by Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood. It's from from epi317 back in April, and features guest Geoff Tate. Monday Morning PodcastAnother show I reviewed for Splitsider this week was the Monday Morning Podcast with Bill Burr. What a funny guy Burr is. And I admire his ability to just hold a mic and freeball his way through an hour without a co-host, a sidekick, or any other sort of production elements. I mean, he can’t read a spot worth a damn but, other than that, he’s on a level that includes Greg Proops and maybe Greg Fitzsimmons back when he occasionally didn’t have a guest. Get up to Splitsider.com if you want to read my review and here’s a snippet from the episode I reviewed, where Bill’s talking about Rudy Guilliani and cops. Psycho PshowTyson sliced us off a hunk of the Psycho Pshow – both of those words start with “P”, by the way, hence their tagline, “The World’s Worst Named Podcast – which is hosted by VJ, Chaidez and Toly. (No idea if I’m pronouncing those names right, by the way. Except maybe VJ because, really, how can you screw up initials?) I don't even try to describe the conversation in this 5-minute clip. I think they maybe were driving or walking somewhere while they were recording it. I can’t even tell. Fake The NationThere’s a new US comedy panel show that revolves around politics and current events. It’s called Fake The Nation and is hosted by Negin Farsad. Every episode she has a couple of comedically-inclined guests to help her comb through the nit and the grit of American and international politics. I mentioned Episode 3 this past week on Splitsider, when the talk was mostly about the political conventions and her guests were Dean Obeidallah and Nato Green. Here We AreComedians are just curiosity seekers like the rest of us. I mean, with podcast such as Professor Blastoff (may it rest in peace), The Infinite Monkey Cage, Talk Nerdy and many others, the hosts are often comics just looking for answers. Tyson clipped us off some of the Here We Are show, hosted by comedian Shane Mauss. And in his Epi77, Shane talks up music and psychology with guest Daniel Levitin, who is a cognitive psychologist, neuroscientist, best-selling author, musician and record producer. Taco TuesdayThis past week saw some friends-of-Succotash toss in the virtual towel. Podcast Dan, Adam Wolf and Dave In The Cave over at the Taco Tuesday podcast hung up their mikes. They managed to hang in for their centennial, Epi100, but some siutations with their physical studio space as well as what they perceived as low listenership, finally decided them on closing up shop. Normally we wait until a show’s been in the ground for a year or more before we feature it in the Podcast Graveyard, and I have a feeling these guys will be back in one configuration or another. But for now, we feature — literally — the last few minutes of the podcast that was Taco Tuesday. Tall Tales & Shaggy Dogs (The May Bee Song)So I got a note from our favorite acapella song stylist, Abner Serd, host of the Tall Tales & Shaggy Dogs podcast. Abner says, “Hi Marc - A few months ago, I tagged you in a song called 'Reflections on a Snowflake,' while acknowledging that it didn't pack as much humor as some of the others. Same goes for this one - it's all yours if you decide to use it, but I understand if it doesn't quite fit. Here is my latest little ditty, called The May Bee Song.” In closing, I did something this week that I don't think I've done since Succotash kicked off over 5 years ago, and that is take a long, hard look at our download numbers. Guess what? They suck! I mean, they're not horrible but they're not the kind of numbers that advertisers drool over. So if I can infringe on your delicate sensibilities to PLEASE get up to iTunes in good haste and give Succotash a 5-star rating and a few sentences of a glowing reviews, I will promise to redouble my efforts to churn out this show on a regular, weekly basis. But it's going to take a team to pull this off, otherwise we might just have to go the way of our friends at Taco Tuesday, bust a gum machine, and get the hell out of here... — Marc Hershon
